Fluorimetric Determination of Cerium(IV) with Ascorbic Acid

A highly sensitive and selective spectrofluorimetric method for the determination of cerium at pico-trace levels in some real, environmental, biological, soil, food and bone samples using 2-(α-pyridyl)-thioquinaldinamide

A very simple, ultra-sensitive and highly selective non-extractive new spectrofluorimetric method is presented for the determination of cerium at pico-trace levels using 2-(α-pyridyl)-thioquinaldinamide (PTQA). PTQA has been proposed as a new analytical reagent for the direct non-extractive spectrofluorimetric determination of cerium(iv). This novel fluorimetric reagent, PTQA becomes oxidized in a slightly acidic (0.0005-0.0015 M H2SO4) solution with cerium(iv) in absolute ethanol to produce a highly fluorescent oxidized product (λ ex = 303 nm; λ em = 370 nm). Constant and maximum fluorescence intensities were observed over a wide range of acidity (0.0005-0.0015 M H2SO4) for the period between 5 min and 24 h. Linear calibration graphs were obtained for 0.001-600 μg L-1 of Ce, having a detection limit of 0.1 ng L-1; the quantification limit of the reaction system was found to be 1 ng L-1 and the RSD was 0-2%. A large excess of over 60 cations, anions and complexing agents (like, chloride, phosphate, azide, tartrate, oxalate, SCN- etc.) do not interfere in the determination. The developed method was successfully used in the determination of cerium in several certified reference materials (alloys, steels, noodles, ores and sediments) as well as in some environmental waters (potable and polluted), biological fluids (human blood, urine and milk), soil samples, food samples (vegetable, rice, corn and wheat), bone samples (human, cow, bull, fish, hen, goat, sheep), solutions containing both cerium(iii) and cerium(iv) and complex. The results of the proposed method for assessing biological, food and vegetables samples were comparable with ICP-OES and were found to be in excellent agreement.

Fluoride boosts the oxidase-like activity of hydrolyzed Ce(iv) but inhibits the activity of Ce(iv), allowing intentional hydrolysis to be performed for consistent analysis of Ce(iv).

A novel off-on fluorescent chemosensor for Al3+ derived from a 4,5-diazafluorene Schiff base derivative

The performance of a chemosensor is closely related to its structure. A new Schiff bass (DFSB) based on 4,5-diazafluorene units has been synthesized in this work. The interaction of DFSB with different metal ions has been studied using UV-vis absorption spectra and fluorescent spectra. The results show that DFSB is a highly selective and sensitive probe for Al3+ ions over other commonly coexisting metal ions in ethanol. A very obvious fluorescence enhancement effect was observed, and a turn-on ratio over 1312-fold was triggered with the addition of 10 equiv. of Al3+ ions. What is more, such fluorescent responses could be detected by the naked eye under a UV-lamp. The lowest detection limit for Al3+ was determined as 3.7 × 10-8 M. The complex solution (DFSB-Al3+) exhibited reversibility with EDTA. These results may be caused by the unique molecular structure.

Spectrofluorimetric Estimation of Norepinephrine Using Ethylenediamine Condensation Method

A simple and sensitive method for the determination of norepinephrine is described. Norepinephrine (NE) was oxidized by mercury (II) nitrate and the oxidation product was condensed with ethylenediamine (EDA) to form a strong fluorescent compound. The addition of acetone enhances the light intensity. The measurement was carried out at 507 nm with excitation at 420 nm. A linear relationship was obtained between the fluorescence intensity and norepinephrine concentration in the range of 0.01 microM-0.014 mM; the correlation coefficient and the detection limit are 0.99813 and 2.5 nM, respectively. The interference from dopamine (DA) can be eliminated by first derivative synchronous fluorimetric method using peak to zero technique. The recovery efficiency was performed using known amounts of norepinephrine in urine sample and the results indicate a 95-98.62% recovery. The proposed method was also applied to the determination of norepinephrine in injections solution. The reaction mechanism was also described.

Quantitative determination of bilirubin by inhibition of chemiluminescence from lucigenin

Bilirubin is a metabolic breakdown product of blood haem, of great biological and diagnostic importance. A new chemiluminescence (CL) method has been developed for the quantification of bilirubin. The method is combined with the flow injection analysis (FIA) technique and based on the inhibition effect of bilirubin on the CL from the lucigenin-hydrogen peroxide system in an alkaline medium. Under the optimum conditions, the decreased CL intensity was proportional to the concentration of bilirubin, in the range 0.0585-58.47 microg/mL. The detection limit estimated from the calibration graph was about 7.8826 ng/mL. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of 10 parallel measurements (1 x 10(-4) mol/L bilirubin) was 2.5%. Recoveries of bilirubin were found to fall in the range 94-97.5% using control sera. The method is interference-free, fast and easy to carry out.
