New Composite Nanomaterials with Antimicrobial and Photocatalytic Properties Based on Silver and Zinc Oxide

Construction of atom co-sharing Bi/Bi4O5Br2 nanosheet heterojunction for plasmonic-enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic antibacterial activity

The rapid advancement of photodynamic therapy (PDT) antibacterial materials has led to promising alternatives to antibiotics for treating bacterial infections. However, antibacterial drugs have poor light absorption and utilization rates, which limits their practical application. Constructing two-dimensional (2D) heterojunctions from materials with matching photophysical properties has emerged as a highly effective strategy for achieving high-efficiency photo-antibacterial performance. Here, we designed and prepared an atom co-sharing Bi/Bi4O5Br2 nanosheet heterojunction by a simple in situ reduction. This heterojunction material combines outstanding biocompatibility with excellent bactericidal efficiency, which exceeded 90 % against Escherichia coli (a Gram-negative bacterium) and Staphylococcus aureus (a Gram-positive bacterium) under visible light irradiation, around nine-fold higher than that with pure Bi4O5Br2 nanosheets. The results suggest that localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of shared Bi atoms on the Bi4O5Br2 nanosheets promotes light utilization and the separation and transfer of photo-generated charges, thus producing more abundant reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can partake in the PDT antibacterial effect. Our study underscores the potential utility of LSPR-enhanced Bi-based nanosheet heterojunctions for safe and efficient PDT to combat bacterial infections.

Antimicrobial Packaging for Plum Tomatoes Based on ZnO Modified Low-Density Polyethylene

Food safety and quality are major concerns in the food industry. Despite numerous studies, polyethylene remains one of the most used materials for packaging due to industry reluctance to invest in new technologies and equipment. Therefore, modifications to the current materials are easier to implement than adopting whole new solutions. Antibacterial activity can be induced in low-density polyethylene films only by adding antimicrobial agents. ZnO nanoparticles are well known for their strong antimicrobial activity, coupled with low toxicity and UV shielding capability. These characteristics recommend ZnO for the food industry. By incorporating such safe and dependable antimicrobial agents in the polyethylene matrix, we have obtained composite films able to inhibit microorganisms' growth that can be used as packaging materials. Here we report the obtaining of highly homogenous composite films with up to 5% ZnO by a melt mixing process at 150 °C for 10 min. The composite films present good transparency in the visible domain, permitting consumers to visualize the food, but have good UV barrier properties. The composite films exhibit good antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity from the lowest ZnO composition (1%), against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. The homogenous dispersion of ZnO nanoparticles into the polyethylene matrix was assessed by Fourier transform infrared microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The optimal mechanical barrier properties were obtained for composition with 3% ZnO. The thermal analysis indicates that the addition of ZnO nanoparticles has increased thermal stability by more than 100 °C. The UV-Vis spectra indicate a low transmittance in the UV domain, lower than 5%, making the films suitable for blocking photo-oxidation processes. The obtained films proved to be efficient packaging films, successfully preserving plum (Rome) tomatoes for up to 14 days.

Antibacterial Activity of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Loaded with Essential Oils

One major problem with the overuse of antibiotics is that the microorganisms acquire resistance; thus the dose must be increased unsustainably. To overcome this problem, researchers from around the world are actively investigating new types of antimicrobials. Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) have been proven to exhibit strong antimicrobial effects; moreover, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) considers ZnO as GRAS (generally recognized as safe). Many essential oils have antimicrobial activity and their components do not generate resistance over time. One of the drawbacks is the high volatility of some components, which diminishes the antimicrobial action as they are eliminated. The combination of ZnO NPs and essential oils can synergistically produce a stronger antimicrobial effect, and some of the volatile compounds can be retained on the nanoparticles' surface, ensuring a better-lasting antimicrobial effect. The samples were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), and thermal analysis (TG-DSC) coupled with analysis of evolved gases using FTIR. The ZnO NPs, with a size of ~35 nm, exhibited a loading between 1.44% and 15.62%-the lower values were specific for limonene-containing oils (e.g., orange, grapefruit, bergamot, or limette), while high values were obtained from cinnamon, minzol, thyme, citronella, and lavender oils-highlighting differences among non-polar terpenes and alcohol or aldehyde derivatives. The antibacterial assay indicated the existence of a synergic action among components and a high dependency on the percentage of loaded oil. Loaded nanoparticles offer immense potential for the development of materials with specific applications, such as wound dressings or food packaging. These nanoparticles can be utilized in scenarios where burst delivery is desired or when prolonged antibacterial activity is sought.

Exploring the potential of metal and metal oxide nanomaterials for sustainable water and wastewater treatment: A review of their antimicrobial properties

Metallic nanoparticles (NPs) are of particular interest as antimicrobial agents in water and wastewater treatment due to their broad suppressive range against bacteria, viruses, and fungi commonly found in these environments. This review explores the potential of different types of metallic NPs, including zinc oxide, gold, copper oxide, and titanium oxide, for use as effective antimicrobial agents in water and wastewater treatment. This is due to the fact that metallic NPs possess a broad suppressive range against bacteria, viruses, as well as fungus. In addition to that, NPs are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to antibiotics for treating bacterial infections. Despite the fact that most research has been focused on silver NPs because of the antibacterial qualities that are known to be associated with them, curiosity about other metallic NPs as potential antimicrobial agents has been growing. Zinc oxide, gold, copper oxide, and titanium oxide NPs are included in this category since it has been demonstrated that these elements have antibacterial properties. Inducing oxidative stress, damage to the cellular membranes, and breakdowns throughout the protein and DNA chains are some of the ways that metallic NPs can have an influence on microbial cells. The purpose of this review was to engage in an in-depth conversation about the current state of the art regarding the utilization of the most important categories of metallic NPs that are used as antimicrobial agents. Several approaches for the synthesis of metal-based NPs were reviewed, including physical and chemical methods as well as "green synthesis" approaches, which are synthesis procedures that do not involve the employment of any chemical agents. Moreover, additional pharmacokinetics, physicochemical properties, and the toxicological hazard associated with the application of silver NPs as antimicrobial agents were discussed.

Influence of Ag size and shape in dye photodegradation using silver nanoparticle/ZnO nanohybrids and polychromatic light

In this work, we propose zinc oxide (ZnO) surface functionalization with plasmonic silver nanoparticles (AgNP) of different sizes and shapes (spheres, prisms, and rods) creating ZnO/AgNP nanohybrids. These were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Surface functionalization with AgNP improved photocatalyst electronic properties, its visible light absorption, and slow electron/hole recombination on the ZnO surface. Photocatalysis assays performed with a polychromatic Hg lamp degraded methyl orange, a model of persistent organic pollutant in water. A systematic study showed that the photodegradation kinetics of the nanohybrids are significantly more efficient than pure ZnO (up to 18 times) and that AgNP size and especially its shape are important in dye degradation. Mechanistic studies revealed that degradation occurred by direct dye reduction on the ZnO surface holes, ZnO electron transfer to Ag followed by •O₂^- formation, and direct injection of AgNP hot electrons in the ZnO conduction band. The last effect was stronger for anisotropic AgNP, which explains their high kinetic degradation rates. Therefore, the rational design in ZnO/AgNP nanohybrid engineering and a systematic approach used in this manuscript allowed a detailed description of photodegradation process that occur at ZnO/AgNP interface. Our results are not conclusive about AgNP size; on the other hand, it clearly demonstrates that anisotropic nanoparticles (as Ag rods and prims) present superior photodegradation efficiency and are promising particles for further large-scale use of solar-irradiated nanohybrids.

Ag Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications-Synthesis and Characterization-A Review

Silver nanoparticles have been intensively studied over a long period of time because they exhibit antibacterial properties in infection treatments, wound healing, or drug delivery systems. The advantages that silver nanoparticles offer regarding the functionalization confer prolonged stability and make them suitable for biomedical applications. Apart from functionalization, silver nanoparticles exhibit various shapes and sizes depending on the conditions used through their fabrications and depending on their final purpose. This paper presents a review of silver nanoparticles with respect to synthesis procedures, including the polluting green synthesis. Currently, the most commonly used characterization techniques required for nanoparticles investigation in antibacterial treatments are described briefly, since silver nanoparticles possess differences in their structure or morphology.

Antimicrobial metal-based nanoparticles: a review on their synthesis, types and antimicrobial action

The investigation of novel nanoparticles with antimicrobial activity has grown in recent years due to the increased incidence of nosocomial infections occurring during hospitalization and food poisoning derived from foodborne pathogens. Antimicrobial agents are necessary in various fields in which biological contamination occurs. For example, in food packaging they are used to control food contamination by microbes, in the medical field the microbial agents are important for reducing the risk of contamination in invasive and routine interventions, and in the textile industry, they can limit the growth of microorganisms due to sweat. The combination of nanotechnology with materials that have an intrinsic antimicrobial activity can result in the development of novel antimicrobial substances. Specifically, metal-based nanoparticles have attracted much interest due to their broad effectiveness against pathogenic microorganisms due to their high surface area and high reactivity. The aim of this review was to explore the state-of-the-art in metal-based nanoparticles, focusing on their synthesis methods, types, and their antimicrobial action. Different techniques used to synthesize metal-based nanoparticles were discussed, including chemical and physical methods and "green synthesis" methods that are free of chemical agents. Although the most studied nanoparticles with antimicrobial properties are metallic or metal-oxide nanoparticles, other types of nanoparticles, such as superparamagnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles and silica-releasing systems also exhibit antimicrobial properties. Finally, since the quantification and understanding of the antimicrobial action of metal-based nanoparticles are key topics, several methods for evaluating in vitro antimicrobial activity and the most common antimicrobial mechanisms (e.g., cell damage and changes in the expression of metabolic genes) were discussed in this review.

Antimicrobial Bilayer Nanocomposites Based on the Incorporation of As-Synthetized Hollow Zinc Oxide Nanotubes

An antimicrobial polymeric bilayer structure based on the application of an acrylic coating containing hollow zinc oxide nanotubes over a polymeric substrate was developed in this work. Firstly, zinc oxide nanotubes (ZnO_NT) were obtained by an atomic layer deposition (ALD) process over electrospun polyvinyl alcohol nanofibers followed by polymer removal through calcination with the purpose of obtaining antimicrobial nanostructures with a high specific area. Parameters of electrospinning, ALD, and calcination processes were set in order to obtain successfully hollow zinc oxide nanotubes. Morphological studies through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) microscopies confirmed the morphological structure of ZnO_NT with an average diameter of 180 nm and thickness of approximately 60 nm. Thermal and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses provided evidence that calcination completely removed the polymer, resulting in a crystalline hexagonal wurtzite structure. Subsequently, ZnO_NT were incorporated into a polymeric coating over a polyethylene extruded film at two concentrations: 0.5 and 1 wt. % with respect to the polymer weight. An antimicrobial analysis of developed antimicrobial materials was performed following JIS Z2801 against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. When compared to active materials containing commercial ZnO nanoparticles, materials containing ZnO_NT presented higher microbial inhibition principally against Gram-negative bacteria, whose reduction was total for films containing 1 wt. % ZnO_NT. Antiviral studies were also performed, but these materials did not present significant viral reduction.
