Determination of radiological hazard parameters and radioactivity concentrations in bauxite samples: the case of the Sutlegen Mine Region (Antalya, Turkey)

Investigation of Radiological and Chemical Contents of Bauxite Ore Extracted in Turkey

In this study, which consists of two parts, the radiological and chemical content of bauxite ore was investigated. Gamma-ray spectrometry was used in the first part of the study to determine the activity concentrations of natural radionuclides in samples taken from bauxite deposits in Turkey. The measured activity concentrations of ²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th, and ⁴⁰K varied from 12.1 ± 2.5 to 132.6 ± 11.4 Bq kg^-1 with a mean of 78.4 ± 8.3 Bq kg^-1, 6.5 ± 0.5 to 97.3 ± 9.9 Bq kg^-1 with a mean of 64.5 ± 5.9 Bq kg^-1, and 5.1 ± 0.0 to 356.4 ± 40.1 Bq kg^-1 with a mean of 52.6 ± 5 Bq kg^-1, respectively. The calculated mean radium equivalent activity value is 177.4 Bq kg^-1, the mean gamma dose rate absorbed in the air is 78.8 nGy h^-1, the mean corresponding annual effective dose value is 96.6 μSv y^-1, and the mean lifetime risk of cancer is 3.85 × 10^-4. The chemical content of the bauxite samples was determined in the second part of the study using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). For which sectors in the industry the existing bauxite deposits in Turkey can be used was investigated based on this information.

Improvements in the radiochemical method for separating 226Ra in solid samples through coprecipitation with BaSO4

The aim of this work was to improve the commonly used method for ²²⁶Ra determination in water and to establish its application in solid samples. This method is based on the coprecipitation of Ra with BaSO₄ and gross alpha counting of the precipitate. An exhaustive study of the coprecipitation behaviour of the most abundant cations present in solid samples was performed to avoid incorrect radiochemical yields. As a result, it was considered necessary to introduce two new purification steps into the conventional method. Likewise, two nuclides, ²⁴¹Am and ²²⁶Ra, were compared to obtain the mass efficiency curve given their different behaviour in the coprecipitation process. While Ra behaves similarly to Ba, Am coprecipitates, forming mixed crystals that may behave differently in the self-absorption process. The influence of the cations on the chemical yield with no precipitate purification was: Sr²⁺≫Fe³⁺>Mg²⁺≈Ca²⁺>K⁺≈Na⁺. The method was successfully applied to soil, sediment, and plant ash samples.

Evaluation of the surface water and sediment quality in the Duger basin (Burdur, Turkey) using multivariate statistical analyses and identification of heavy metals

The study aims to determine the chemical contents of the surface water of the Duger Creek and the sediments of the Duger basin, which feeds the Burdur Lake, the correlation between these contents, the potential ecological risks of these contents, the toxic heavy metal contents, and their spatial distribution by using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy method. The Duger basin, which has been selected as the study area, is located on the streams feeding the Burdur Lake, which has been determined as the Ramsar area in Turkey. Burdur Lake has a key role in the ecological balance due to its biological diversity, characteristic animal/plant fauna since it provides a suitable area for seasonal migration of waterfowl. Considering all these functions, the surface water and sediment quality of the Duger basin, which is located in the streams feeding Burdur Lake, is critical. In this study, elemental compositions of 20 water and 20 sediment samples collected from the Duger basin were determined by using the XRF spectroscopy method. Many elements that may have toxicological characteristics in terms of human and environmental health have been detected in the surface water and sediment samples from the Duger basin. These elements were found to have the following average values: Al (60.09 mg/L), Co (3.35 mg/L), Zn (3.35 mg/L), Cu (2.21 mg/L), Cr (0.14 mg/L). It is interpreted that they may be toxic because they exceed the limits specified in WHO 2004. In this context, the surface water in the Duger basin, which feeds the Burdur Lake, must be filtered before using it as drinking water or for agricultural and livestock purposes. New strategic planning is suggested to ensure the sustainability of the basin's surface water quality.
