Abstract
BACKGROUND Choroid plexus (CP) metastases are an extremely rare condition accounting for less than 1% of brain metastases. Due to its scarcity, little is known about this pathology and its management. Herein, we propose a review of the current literature to help its diagnosis and management. METHODS Through a literature review based on PubMed/MEDLINE database, we reviewed 94 cases of intraventricular metastasis of solid cancer in 28 full-text articles in English from 1980 to 2010. We have reported epidemiological, clinical, radiological, histological data, as well as management strategies and outcomes. A case report of fourth ventricular pulmonary metastasis illustrates this review. RESULTS Intraventricular metastases are most often reported in patients in their 6th decade. The clinical presentation is marked by acute hydrocephalus, more rarely lesional bleeding. Three-quarters of intraventricular metastases develop in lateral ventricle, then respectively in the fourth and third ventricles. Kidney cancer accounts for 45% of the cases. The treatment modalities are surgical removal in case of a single lesion and adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy depending on the primary cancer. The prognosis remains poor due to dissemination via the cerebrospinal fluid. CONCLUSION Multiple choroid plexus metastasis is a rare diagnosis, affecting patients with a specific clinical presentation and a misleading radiological appearance. There is no standard of care for the management of these lesions and surgical approach can be challenging.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Intraventricular metastasis from extracranial tumor is rare. We describe MRI and 68Ga-FAPI-04 PET/CT findings in a case of histologically proved solitary choroid plexus metastasis from clear cell renal cell carcinoma. The tumor showed remarkable enhancement on MRI and increased FAPI uptake with high tumor-to-background activity ratio on PET/CT. This case indicates FAPI PET may be useful for detection of intraventricular metastasis from renal cell carcinoma.

Abstract
Background: Metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) of the choroid plexus is an exceedingly rare condition, with only 35 reported cases to date. Surgical resection of these tumors poses a unique challenge to neurosurgeons since evidence-based treatment guidelines are yet to be designed. Case Description: The authors describe the case of a 58-year-old woman presenting with progressive neurological deterioration 5 years after a right nephrectomy for a WHO 2016 Stage I RCC. A head, contrast-enhanced, and magnetic resonance revealed signs of obstructive hydrocephalus and a homogeneously contrast-enhancing 5 cm mass located in the trigone of the right lateral ventricle. Furthermore, a search of the literature was performed in compliance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. After screening for duplicates, 35 publications met the eligibility criteria. Finally, 17 manuscripts were included for analysis. Moreover, a detailed description of an illustrative case is provided. The median age at diagnosis for intraventricular metastasis from RCC was 62.9 years, showing a slight female prevalence. The lateral ventricles were reported as the most frequent location with only one patient presenting with obstructive hydrocephalus caused by the obliteration of Monro foramen. Management options included either open craniotomy or radiosurgery. Conclusion: The management of choroid plexus metastasis from RCC is still controversial with various authors proposing different treatment strategies. In this article, in addition to an in-depth case description, a qualitative review of the literature on metastatic RCCs of the choroid plexus using the PRISMA is provided.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Intraventricular metastatic brain tumors account for a small, but challenging, fraction of metastatic brain tumors (0.9%-4.5%). Metastases from renal cell carcinoma (RCC) account for a large portion of these intraventricular tumors. Although patient outcomes have been assumed to be poor, these have not been reported in a modern series with a multimodality treatment paradigm of radiotherapy (RT), resection, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion. We have presented the first case series of patients with intraventricular metastatic tumors from RCC. METHODS We performed a single-institution retrospective review of patients with intraventricular RCC metastases treated from January 2003 to January 2019. Volumetric analysis was used to delineate the tumor size and the Kaplan-Meier method to evaluate the survival data. RESULTS A total of 22 intraventricular RCC metastases were identified in 19 patients with 61.3 patient-years of follow-up. The median patient age was 64 years, and the median tumor volume was 2.2 cm3. Overall, 19 metastases had been treated initially with RT. Of these, 16 had received stereotactic body RT and 3 had received whole brain RT. Three tumors were surgically excised and had received adjuvant stereotactic body RT in the upfront setting. Although 5 patients had presented with obstructive hydrocephalus, none had required CSF diversion. After treatment, 5 metastases had progressed, resulting in 1- and 3-year progression-free survival rates of 81.6% and 68%, respectively. The median overall survival was 2.8 years, with 1- and 5-year overall survival rates of 76.7% and 28.3%, respectively. Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis was not observed. CONCLUSIONS Despite the relatively limited overall survival for this population with metastatic cancer, comparable to contemporary parenchymal brain metastasis cohorts, reasonable local central nervous system control was achieved in most patients using a paradigm of focal RT and resection, where indicated. Finally, CSF diversion was not required even in patients presenting with hydrocephalus.

Abstract
We herein describe a case of a solitary metastasis of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in the third ventricle, which was totally removed via an interhemispheric trans-callosal trans-choroidal approach. The histological examination revealed a solitary metastasis of RCC. The postoperative course was uneventful. A stereotactic cyber knife was additionally used for the tumor cavity. As of 2 years after surgery, the patient has been doing well without recurrence. This case highlights the urgent need for an early diagnosis and surgical treatment for solitary metastasis of RCC to the third ventricle due to its critical course.

Abstract
Choroid plexus metastasis (CPM) is extremely rare and originates most frequently from renal cell carcinoma (RCC). We herein report the case of a 58-year-old man who developed a solitary CPM lesion derived from follicular thyroid carcinoma in addition to intraventricular hemorrhage. Computed tomography revealed acute hydrocephalus as a result of the hemorrhage, and we planned endoscopic hematoma evacuation. Since it was too difficult to reach the hematoma, we considered the possibility of a neoplasm and performed a biopsy of the lesion, the results of which led to an accurate diagnosis of CPM in this case. We also review previous reports of CPM originating from thyroid carcinoma compared with RCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Brain metastases (BM) are the most common intracranial tumours amongst adults. Ten to 40 % of patients with cancer will develop BM. In this study, we observed a high affinity of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) to the ventricular system, with close association to the choroid plexus. METHODS This is a retrospective study evaluating data of our prospectively maintained brain tumour database, focusing on consecutive BM patients, who were treated at our center between March 2003 and December 2011. Data collected included primary pathologies, anatomical distribution of the brain metastasis according to neuroimaging, and treatment modalities. RESULTS We identified 614 patients with BM, of whom 24 (3.9 %) were diagnosed with RCC, harboring 33 lesions. Nine of the 24 patients (37.5 %) presented with an intraventricular location (10 of 33 RCC BM lesions). Of the remaining 590 patients with non-RCC pathologies, five patients (0.8 %) were diagnosed with intraventricular lesions (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION In this unselected, consecutive treated BM patient cohort we observed a high affinity of RCC BM to the ventricular system with close association to the choroid plexus. The reason for this affinity is unknown. Surgical approaches for resection of these lesions should be planned to include early control on the vascular supply from the choroidal vessels.

Abstract
Thyroid cancer is not a common primary cancer causing intracranial metastasis. Here we report a 74-year-old woman with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrating a 4 cm round, heterogeneously enhancing mass in the trigone of the right lateral ventricle. Systemic screening by computed tomography (CT) examination detected a 20 mm nodule with calcification in the thyroid, multiple well circumscribed nodules in bilateral lung filed, and a bone metastasis to the right dorsal rib. Cerebral angiography demonstrated a hypervascular mass fed from anterior and posterior choroidal arteries. Tumor biopsy via parietal transcortical approach confirmed a thyroid carcinoma metastasis to the choroid plexus. Of the 33 reported cases of choroid plexus metastasis, 14 (42%) are from kidney and 3 (9%) from thyroid cancer, which appears to be overrepresented considering their prevalence among all brain metastasis. There may be seed-and-soil relationship between thyroid cancer and choroid plexus.

Abstract
Intracranial metastasis from renal cell carcinoma is rare. In this study, four patients (age range 56-72 years) were treated for intracranial metastases from renal cell carcinoma. The metastasis was solitary in all four patients and was located in the temporoparietal region in two patients, cerebellum in one patient, and bilateral lateral ventricles in one patient. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging showed hemorrhage and necrosis in the tumor in all four patients, and one patient had edema in the region of the tumor. All patients were treated with craniotomy for tumor resection, and histopathologic examination showed clear cell carcinoma. Marked bleeding occurred in all patients during the operation, but preoperative direct injection of ethanol into epidural metastases (2 patients) was effective in decreasing intraoperative blood loss. Prognosis was poor with limited survival time (range 2 weeks-45 months), but prognosis was best in the two patients who were treated with postoperative radiation therapy and chemotherapy (survival times 26 and 45 months). To our knowledge, this is the largest report of four uncommon intracranial metastases from RCC in Chinese patients. In summary, intracranial metastasis from renal cell carcinoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of intracranial tumor because of the high risk of bleeding and poor prognosis.

Abstract
OBJECT The aim of this study was to review the outcome of patients undergoing surgery for treatment of lateral-ventricle metastases. METHODS Imaging information and chart reviews of operative reports were used to conduct a retrospective analysis in 29 patients who underwent resection of lateral-ventricle metastases at the authors' institution between 1993 and 2007. Clinical and neurosurgical outcomes and recurrence rates were studied. RESULTS The mean patient age was 56 years (range 20-69 years); 66% of patients were male. Single intraventricular metastases occurred in 69% of patients, and 55% of them had systemic metastases. The 30-day postoperative mortality rate was 7%. There was intracerebral tumor recurrence in 41% of patients, with 1 patient undergoing a second operation for this. The median postoperative survival duration for 28 patients (excluding 1 patient with preoperative leptomeningeal disease) was 11.7 months; the 3- and 5-year survival rates were 17 and 11%, respectively. Univariate analysis identified factors significantly influencing survival, including the preoperative Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS) score (p = 0.02), the number of cerebral metastases (p = 0.02), the presence of primary renal cell carcinoma (RCC) (p = 0.02), and the resection method (en bloc vs piecemeal; p = 0.05). The presence of extracranial metastases did not significantly influence survival. Multivariate analysis showed that the preoperative KPS score (p = 0.002), the presence of primary RCC (p = 0.039), and the resection method (en bloc vs piecemeal; p = 0.008) correlated significantly with survival time. CONCLUSIONS Surgery is an important component in the management of intraventricular metastases. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first study focusing totally on resection of lateral-ventricle metastases. The authors found that patients with primary RCC, those with a favorable preoperative KPS score, and those who underwent en bloc resection had a better outcome than others.

Abstract
Metastatic tumors to the brain presenting exclusively in the choroid plexus are rare and are most frequently associated with renal cell carcinoma. In this paper, the authors report an unusual case of intraventricular metastasis, and to the authors' knowledge, this is the first case of solitary metastasis from oesophageal carcinoma to the choroid plexus to be described in the literature. Metastatic disease is an important differential diagnosis which must be considered even for a patient without a documented primary malignancy who presents with a single lesion in the ventricle.
