Abstract
In contrast to conventional non-biobased adsorbents, lignin emerges as a cost-effective and environmentally benign alternative for water treatment. This study identifies unexpected and unpredicted multifunctional properties of lignin nanoparticles (LNPs). LNPs, which are prepared by simple physical processes, demonstrated for the first time to behave as multifunctional materials able to adsorb and photodegrade methylene blue (MB) in aqueous medium upon UV irradiation. Furthermore, the synthetic approach adopted to synthesize LNPs - and therefore their surface properties - strongly affects their performances. More specifically, LNPs obtained by solvent-antisolvent nanoprecipitation (SLNPs) show the highest MB adsorption properties (98 % removal), reaching a maximum adsorption capacity of 43.0 mg g-1, and the fastest adsorption kinetics with respect to other lignin-based adsorbents. Conversely, hydrotropic LNPs (HLNPs) exhibit exceptional photocatalytic activity, resulting in 98 % MB degradation over 6 hours of UV irradiation, combined with the ability to be easily recycled and reused. The present effort paves the way for the use of LNPs as efficient multifunctional materials able to perform concurrently adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of dye pollutants, toward the creation of a sustainable biobased water treatment platform.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to investigate the efficiency of two processes for the amoxicillin removal through static (batch) adsorption and photocatalytic degradation onto the prepared samples. Three solid materials as photocatalyst and/or adsorbent were synthesized viz. nanotitanium dioxide (NT) prepared by the sol-gel method, scallop shells-based nanohydroxyapatite (NP), and nanotitanium dioxide/nanohydroxyapatite composite (NTP). The physicochemical and morphological properties of the prepared samples were tested by TGA, XRD, DRS, ATR-FTIR, nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherm, zeta potential, SEM, and TEM. The major operational conditions were optimized for catalyst or adsorbent mass, pH, shaking time, initial amoxicillin (AMX) concentration, power of UV lamp, and temperature. The results illuminated that NTP achieved the highest adsorption capacity (88.46 mg/g) at 20 ℃ and AMX adsorption onto all the solid materials was well applied by Langmuir, Temkin, pseudo-second order, and Elovich models. The maximum desorption percent (98%) was attained by acetone. The degradation percent of AMX reached 85.3 and 99.5% for NT and NTP, respectively, using 0.9 g/L of catalyst dosage through 90 min. AMX photodegradation onto the catalysts' surface was well fitted by Langmuir-Hinshelwood, Arrhenius, and Eyring-Polanyi models with endothermic, physical, and nonspontaneous nature of photocatalysis process. NTP acts as a promising adsorbent and photocatalyst for the antibiotics' removal in wastewater.

Abstract
Photocatalytic degradation employing metal oxides, such as TiO2 nanoparticles, as catalysts is an important technique for the removal of synthetic dyes from wastewater under light irradiation. The basic principles of photocatalysis of dyes, the effects of the intrinsic photoactivity of a catalyst, and the conventional non-fundamental factors are well established. Recently reported photocatalysis studies of dyes in single, binary, and ternary solute solutions opened up a new perspective on competitive photocatalytic degradation of the dyes. There has not been a review on the photocatalytic behavior of binary or ternary solutions of dyes. In this regard, this current review article summarizes the photocatalytic behavior of methylene, rhodamine B, and methyl orange in their binary or ternary solutions. This brief overview introduces the importance of the dynamics of immobilization and reactivity of the dyes, the vital roles of molecular conformation and functional groups on their diffusion onto the catalyst surface, and photocatalytic degradation, and provides an understanding of the simultaneous photocatalytic processes of multiple dyes in aqueous systems.

Abstract
Amongst the environmental issues throughout the world, organic synthetic dyes continue to be one of the most important subjects in wastewater remediation. In this paper, the photocatalytic degradation of the dimethylmethane fluorescent dye, Auramine O (AO), was investigated in a heterogeneous aqueous solution with 100 nm anatase TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) under 365 nm light irradiation. The effect of irradiation time was systematically studied, and photolysis and adsorption of AO on TiO2 NPs were also evaluated using the same experimental conditions. The kinetics of AO photocatalytic degradation were pseudo-first order, according to the Langmuir–Hinshelwood model, with a rate constant of 0.048 ± 0.002 min−1. A maximum photocatalytic efficiency, as high as 96.2 ± 0.9%, was achieved from a colloidal mixture of 20 mL (17.78 μmol L−3) AO solution in the presence of 5 mg of TiO2 NPs. The efficiency of AO photocatalysis decreased nonlinearly with the initial concentration and catalyst dosage. Based on the effect of temperature, the activation energy of AO photocatalytic degradation was estimated to be 4.63 kJ mol−1. The effect of pH, additional scavengers, and H2O2 on the photocatalytic degradation of AO was assessed. No photocatalytic degradation products of AO were observed using UV–visible and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, confirming that the final products are volatile small molecules.

Abstract
Aurivillius oxides ferroelectric layered materials are formed by bismuth oxide and pseu-do-perovskite layers. They have a good ionic conductivity, which is beneficial for various photo-catalyzed reactions. Here, we synthesized ultra-thin nanosheets of two different Aurivillius oxides, Bi2WO6 (BWO) and Bi2MoO6 (BMO), by using a hard-template process. All materials were characterized through XRD, TEM, FTIR, TGA/DSC, DLS/ELS, DRS, UV-Vis. Band gap material (Eg) and potential of the valence band (EVB) were calculated for BWO and BMO. In contrast to previous reports on the use of multi composite materials, a new procedure for photocatalytic efficient BMO nanosheets was developed. The procedure, with an additional step only, avoids the use of composite materials, improves crystal structure, and strongly reduces impurities. BWO and BMO were used as photocatalysts for the degradation of the water pollutant dye malachite green (MG). MG removal kinetics was fitted with Langmuir-Hinshelwood model obtaining a kinetic constant k = 7.81 × 10-2 min-1 for BWO and k = 9.27 × 10-2 min-1 for BMO. Photocatalytic dye degradation was highly effective, reaching 89% and 91% MG removal for BWO and BMO, respectively. A control experiment, carried out in the absence of light, allowed to quantify the contribution of adsorption to MG removal process. Adsorption contributed to MG removal by a 51% for BWO and only by a 19% for BMO, suggesting a different degradation mechanism for the two photocatalysts. The advanced MG degradation process due to BMO is likely caused by the high crystallinity of the material synthetized with the new procedure. Reuse tests demonstrated that both photocatalysts are highly active and stable reaching a MG removal up to 95% at the 10th reaction cycle. These results demonstrate that BMO nanosheets, synthesized with an easy additional step, achieved the best degradation performance, and can be successfully used for environmental remediation applications.

Abstract
Abstract
In the present study, pectin-alginate-titania (PAT) composites were synthesized and the adsorptive removal behavior of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution, as a model of synthetic organic effluents, onto the prepared PAT composites were investigated by monitoring the effect of contact time, initial MB concentration, and temperature. The adsorption isotherm data were fitted well with the Freundlich isotherm model, suggesting the surface heterogeneity of the PAT composites and that the MB adsorption occurred on the active sites on multilayer surface of the composites. The adsorption kinetics of MB was demonstrated to be pseudo-second order, governed by two intraparticle diffusion rates, and the adsorption process was exothermic, spontaneous, and more disorder. The Langmuir isotherm model suggested that the maximum adsorption capacity of MB on the PAT composites was in the range of 435–637 mg g–1. In general, it increased with the TiO2 NPs content in the PAT composites, due most likely to the increase in surface area exposing more functional groups of the pectin and alginate to interact with the synthetic dye. The adsorptive removal of MB by the PAT composites was found to be more efficient compared with many other reported adsorbents, such as graphene oxide hybrids, pectin microspheres, magnetite-silica-pectin composites, clay-based materials, chemically treated minerals, and agricultural waste. The present study therefore demonstrated for the first time that PAT composites are not only promising to be utilized as an adsorbent in wastewater treatment, but also provide an insight into the adsorption mechanism of the synthetic dyes onto the biopolymers-titania composites.
