Abstract
The deposition of a prototypical spin-crossover [Fe(phen)2(NCS)2] complex on Au(111), Cu(111) and Ag(111) surfaces has been investigated by means of periodic DFT+U calculations, with the aim of understanding how different metallic surfaces affect the spin state switching. Our results show that adsorption is metal- and spin-dependent, with different preferred adsorption sites for the different surfaces and spin states. For the three considered surfaces adsorption energies are larger in the LS state than in the HS one, which increases the transition enthalpy by 58.7 kJ mol-1 for Cu(111), 14.6 kJ mol-1 for Au(111) and 9.6 kJ mol-1 for Ag(111) with respect to the free molecule. There is a clear correlation between this effect and the extent of the complex-surface interaction, which can be established from adsorption energies, surface-complex distances and charge density difference plots as: Cu(111) > Au(111) > Ag(111). Therefore, a stronger interaction with the surface produces a larger energy difference between two spin states, making the spin transition less probable to occur. Finally, our calculations show that it would be possible to probe the spin-state of the deposited molecules from the STM images, in line with the recent experimental results.

Abstract
Hybrid density functionals replace a fraction of an underlying generalized-gradient approximation (GGA) exchange description with a Fock-exchange component. Range-separated hybrids (RSHs) also effectively screen the Fock-exchange component and thus open the door for characterizations of metals and adsorption at metal surfaces. The RSHs are traditionally based on a robust GGA, such as PBE (Perdew J Pet al1996Phys. Rev. Lett.773865), for example, as implemented in the HSE design (Heyd Jet al2003J. Chem. Phys.1188207). Here we define an analytical-hole (Henderson T Met al2008J. Chem. Phys.128194105) consistent-exchange RSH extension to the van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) method (Berland Ket al2015Rep. Prog. Phys.78066501), launching vdW-DF-ahcx. We characterize the GGA-type exchange in the vdW-DF-cx version (Berland K and Hyldgaard P 2014Phys. Rev. B89035412), isolate the short-ranged exchange component, and define the new vdW-DF hybrid. We find that the performance vdW-DF-ahcx compares favorably to (dispersion-corrected) HSE for descriptions of bulk (broad molecular) properties. We also find that it provides accurate descriptions of noble-metal surface properties, including CO adsorption.

Abstract
The regium-π stacking interactions in the Au6···PhX (X = H, CH3, OH, OCH3, NH2, F, Cl, Br, CN, NO2) complexes are studied using quantum chemical methods. The present study focuses on the different effects of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituent. The structure and binding strength of the complexes are examined. The interactions between Au6 cluster and various substituted benzene become strengthened relative to the Au6···benzene complex. The interaction region indicator analysis was performed, and the interaction region and interaction between the substituent and Au6 cluster are discussed. It is found that the substituent effects on the regium-π stacking interactions between Au6 cluster and substituted benzene are different from π···π interactions of benzene dimer. Energy decomposition analysis was carried out to study the nature of regium-π stacking interactions, and the substituent effects are mainly reflected on the electrostatic interaction and dispersion.

Abstract
We present an extension of the DFT-D4 model [J. Chem. Phys., 2019, 150, 154122] for periodic systems. The main new ingredients are additional reference polarizabilities for highly-coordinated group 1-5 elements derived from pseudo-periodic electrostatically-embedded cluster calculations. To illustrate the performance of the updated method, several test cases are considered, for which we compare D4 to its predecessor D3(BJ), as well as to a comprehensive set of other dispersion-corrected methods. The largest improvements are observed for solid-state polarizabilities of 16 inorganic salts, where the D4 model achieves an unprecedented accuracy, surpassing its predecessor as well as other, computationally much more demanding approaches. For cell volumes and lattice energies of two sets of chemically diverse molecular crystals, the accuracy gain is less pronounced compared to the already excellently performing D3(BJ) method. For the challenging adsorption energies of small organic molecules on metallic as well as on ionic surfaces, DFT-D4 provides values in good agreement with experimental and/or high-level references. These results suggest the application of the proposed D4 model as a physically improved yet computationally efficient dispersion correction for standard DFT calculations as well as low-cost approaches like semi-empirical or even force-field models.

Abstract
Extensive applications of noble metals as heterogeneous catalysts are limited by their global reserve scarcity and exorbitant price. Identifying the intrinsic active nature of a catalyst benefits the designing of catalysts with trace amounts of noble metals; these catalysts display better or comparable overall catalytic efficiency than their heavily loaded counterparts. Herein, systematic studies on Pd dispersion and surface properties of a series of Pd/CeO2 catalysts for styrene hydrogenation showed that high Pd dispersion and surface abundant defects of the catalysts are essential to realize superior activity. Highly dispersed subnanometric Pd clusters on porous nanorods of ceria with a large surface Ce3+ fraction of 27.4%, high Pd dispersion of 73.6%, and low Pd loading of 0.081 wt% delivered a very large turnover frequency of 103 233 h-1 based on each exposed Pd atom for styrene hydrogenation at 1.0 MPa H2 and 30 °C. Experimental data, kinetic analysis, and density functional theory calculations revealed that the highly dispersed Pd shows a low affinity for styrene and provides more exposed Pd sites for hydrogen activation. The surface abundant defects (oxygen vacancy) of Pd/CeO2 catalysts can enrich the electron density of Pd, improve its capability for H2 dissociation and lower the affinity of styrene for Pd.

Abstract
Bottom-up approaches to nanofabrication are of great interest because they can enable structural control while minimizing material waste and fabrication time. One new bottom-up nanofabrication method involves excitation of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of a Ag surface to drive deposition of sub-15 nm Au nanoparticles from MeAuPPh3. In this work we used density functional theory to investigate the role of the PPh3 ligands of the Au precursor and the effect of adsorbed solvent on the deposition process, and to elucidate the mechanism of Au nanoparticle deposition. In the absence of solvent, the calculated barrier to MeAuPPh3 dissociation on the bare surface is <20 kcal/mol, making it facile at room temperature. Once adsorbed on the surface, neighboring MeAu fragments undergo ethane elimination to produce Au adatoms that cluster into Au nanoparticles. However, if the sample is immersed in benzene, we predict that the monolayer of adsorbed solvent blocks the adsorption of MeAuPPh3 onto the Ag surface because the PPh3 ligand is large compared to the size of the exposed surface between adsorbed benzenes. Instead, the Au-P bond of MeAuPPh3 dissociates in solution (Ea = 38.5 kcal/mol) in the plasmon heated near-surface region followed by the adsorption of the MeAu fragment on Ag in the interstitial space of the benzene monolayer. The adsorbed benzene forces the Au precursor to react through the higher energy path of dissociation in solution rather than dissociatively adsorbing onto the bare surface. This requires a higher temperature if the reaction is to proceed at a reasonable rate and enables the control of deposition by the light induced SPR heating of the surface and nearby solution.

Abstract
A density functional theory (DFT) that accounts for van der Waals (vdW) interactions in condensed matter, materials physics, chemistry, and biology is reviewed. The insights that led to the construction of the Rutgers-Chalmers van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) are presented with the aim of giving a historical perspective, while also emphasizing more recent efforts which have sought to improve its accuracy. In addition to technical details, we discuss a range of recent applications that illustrate the necessity of including dispersion interactions in DFT. This review highlights the value of the vdW-DF method as a general-purpose method, not only for dispersion bound systems, but also in densely packed systems where these types of interactions are traditionally thought to be negligible.

Abstract
The adsorption of benzene on the M(111), M(100) and M(110) surfaces of the coinage metals copper (M = Cu), silver (M = Ag) and gold (M = Au) is studied on the basis of density functional theory (DFT) calculations with an empirical dispersion correction (D3). Variants of the Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof functionals (PBE, RPBE and RevPBE) in combination with different versions of the dispersion correction (D3 and D3(BJ)) are compared. PBE-D3, PBE-D3(BJ) and RPBE-D3 give similar results which exhibit a good agreement with experimental data. RevPBE-D3 and RevPBE-D3(BJ) tend to overestimate adsorption energies. The inclusion of three-center terms (PBE-D3(ABC)) leads to a slightly better agreement with the experiment in most cases. Vertical adsorbate–substrate distances are calculated and compared to previous theoretical results. The observed trends for the surfaces and metals are consistent with the calculated adsorption energies.

Abstract
Adsorption of noble gases on metal surfaces is determined by weak interactions. We applied two versions of the nonlocal van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) to compute adsorption energies of Ar, Kr, and Xe on Pt(111), Pd(111), Cu(111), and Cu(110) metal surfaces. We compared our results with data obtained using other density functional approaches, including the semiempirical vdW-corrected DFT-D2. The vdW-DF results show considerable improvements in the description of adsorption energies and equilibrium distances over other DFT based methods, giving good agreement with experiments. We also calculated perpendicular vibrational energies for noble gases on the metal surfaces using vdW-DF data and found excellent agreement with available experimental results. Our vdW-DF calculations show that adsorption of noble gases on low-coordination sites is energetically favored over high-coordination sites, but only by a few meV. Analysis of the two-dimensional potential energy surface shows that the high-coordination sites are local maxima on the two-dimensional potential energy surface and therefore unlikely to be observed in experiments; this provides an explanation of the experimental observations. The DFT-D2 approach with the standard parameterization was found to overestimate the dispersion interactions, and to give the wrong adsorption site preference for four of the nine systems we studied.

Abstract
We have performed a systematic semi-empirical and ab initio van der Waals study to investigate the bonding mechanism of benzene (C(6)H(6)), triazine (C(3)N(3)H(3)) and borazine (B(3)N(3)H(6)) adsorbed on graphene and a single boron nitride (BN) sheet. The two semi-empirical approaches used to include the van der Waals (vdW) interactions in our density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the strength of the molecule-surface interaction corresponds to a strong physisorption with no net charge transfer between the molecules and the corresponding substrates. This observation is strengthened by the use of first-principles non-local correlation vdW-DF functionals which provide a sound physical basis to include vdW interactions in DFT calculations. In particular we have employed two flavors of vdW-DF functionals which enabled us to determine the role of the non-local correlation effects in the molecule-surface bonding mechanism which cannot be assessed by using only semi-empirical vdW methods. Our study also reveals that the strength of the molecule-surface interaction can be influenced by the electronegativity of the B, C and N atoms.

Abstract
We present the results of ab initio electronic structure calculations for the adsorption characteristics of three amine molecules on Au(111), which show that the inclusion of van der Waals interactions between the isolated molecule and the surface leads in general to good agreement with experimental data on the binding energies. Each molecule, however, adsorbs with a small tilt angle (between -5 and 9°). For the specific case of 1,4-diaminobenzene (BDA) our calculations reproduce the larger tilt angle (close to 24°) measured by photoemission experiments, when intermolecular (van der Waals) interactions (for about 8% coverage) are included. These results point not only to the important contribution of van der Waals interactions to molecule-surface binding energy, but also that of intermolecular interactions, often considered secondary to that between the molecule and the surface, in determining the adsorption geometry and pattern formation.

Abstract
In-plane dislocation networks arise in both inorganic and organic films as a way of relieving the elastic strain that builds up at the substrate interface. In molecule/surface systems, supramolecular interactions are weak and more complex (compared to the atomic bonds in inorganic films), and their interplay with molecule-substrate interactions is very subtle, making it difficult to single out the driving force for a nanoscale dislocation pattern. On the basis of a combined experimental and theoretical work, we here show that periodic dislocations in a molecular PFP film are mainly driven by the optimization of molecule-substrate interactions. Compared to inorganic networks however, it implies a much lower energy imbalance, allowing a thermally induced transition from a low-energy strain dislocation pattern to a high-energy incommensurate moiré.

Abstract
The adsorption of an adenine molecule on graphene is studied using a first-principles van der Waals functional, vdW-DF (Dion et al 2004 Phys. Rev. Lett. 92 246401). The cohesive energy of an ordered adenine overlayer is also estimated. For the adsorption of a single molecule, we determine the optimal binding configuration and adsorption energy by translating and rotating the molecule. The adsorption energy for a single molecule of adenine is found to be 711 meV, which is close to the calculated adsorption energy of the similarly sized naphthalene. On the basis of the single-molecular binding configuration, we estimate the cohesive energy of a two-dimensional ordered overlayer. We find a significantly stronger binding energy for the ordered overlayer than for single-molecule adsorption.

Abstract
Electronic structure calculations have become an indispensable tool in many areas of materials science and quantum chemistry. Even though the Kohn-Sham formulation of the density-functional theory (DFT) simplifies the many-body problem significantly, one is still confronted with several numerical challenges. In this article we present the projector augmented-wave (PAW) method as implemented in the GPAW program package (https://wiki.fysik.dtu.dk/gpaw) using a uniform real-space grid representation of the electronic wavefunctions. Compared to more traditional plane wave or localized basis set approaches, real-space grids offer several advantages, most notably good computational scalability and systematic convergence properties. However, as a unique feature GPAW also facilitates a localized atomic-orbital basis set in addition to the grid. The efficient atomic basis set is complementary to the more accurate grid, and the possibility to seamlessly switch between the two representations provides great flexibility. While DFT allows one to study ground state properties, time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) provides access to the excited states. We have implemented the two common formulations of TDDFT, namely the linear-response and the time propagation schemes. Electron transport calculations under finite-bias conditions can be performed with GPAW using non-equilibrium Green functions and the localized basis set. In addition to the basic features of the real-space PAW method, we also describe the implementation of selected exchange-correlation functionals, parallelization schemes, ΔSCF-method, x-ray absorption spectra, and maximally localized Wannier orbitals.
