Spatial video remote sensing for urban vegetation mapping using vegetation indices

The fusion of vegetation indices increases the accuracy of cotton leaf area prediction

Introduction

Rapid and accurate estimation of leaf area index (LAI) is of great significance for the precision agriculture because LAI is an important parameter to evaluate crop canopy structure and growth status.

Methods

In this study, 20 vegetation indices were constructed by using cotton canopy spectra. Then, cotton LAI estimation models were constructed based on multiple machine learning (ML) methods extreme learning machine (ELM), random forest (RF), back propagation (BP), multivariable linear regression (MLR), support vector machine (SVM)], and the optimal modeling strategy (RF) was selected. Finally, the vegetation indices with a high correlation with LAI were fused to construct the VI-fusion RF model, to explore the potential of multi-vegetation index fusion in the estimation of cotton LAI.

Results

The RF model had the highest estimation accuracy among the LAI estimation models, and the estimation accuracy of models constructed by fusing multiple VIs was higher than that of models constructed based on single VIs. Among the multi-VI fusion models, the RF model constructed based on the fusion of seven vegetation indices (MNDSI, SRI, GRVI, REP, CIred-edge, MSR, and NVI) had the highest estimation accuracy, with coefficient of determination (R2), rootmean square error (RMSE), normalized rootmean square error (NRMSE), and mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.90, 0.50, 0.14, and 0.26, respectively.

Discussion

Appropriate fusion of vegetation indices can include more spectral features in modeling and significantly improve the cotton LAI estimation accuracy. This study will provide a technical reference for improving the cotton LAI estimation accuracy, and the proposed method has great potential for crop growth monitoring applications.

Modelling Red-Crowned Parrot (Psittaciformes: Amazona viridigenalis [Cassin, 1853]) distributions in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas using elevation and vegetation indices and their derivatives

Texas Rio Grande Valley Red-crowned Parrots (Psittaciformes: Amazona viridigenalis [Cassin, 1853]) primarily occupy vegetated urban rather than natural areas. We investigated the utility of raw vegetation indices and their derivatives as well as elevation in modelling the Red-crowned parrot's general use, nest site, and roost site habitat distributions. A feature selection algorithm was employed to create and select an ensemble of fine-scale, top-ranked MaxEnt models from optimally-sized, decorrelated subsets of four to seven of 199 potential variables. Variables were ranked post hoc by frequency of appearance and mean permutation importance in top-ranked models. Our ensemble models accurately predicted the three distributions of interest ([Formula: see text] Area Under the Curve [AUC] = 0.904-0.969). Top-ranked variables for different habitat distribution models included: (a) general use-percent cover of preferred ranges of entropy texture of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values, entropy and contrast textures of NDVI, and elevation; (b) nest site-entropy textures of NDVI and Green-Blue NDVI, and percent cover of preferred range of entropy texture of NDVI values; (c) roost site-percent cover of preferred ranges of entropy texture of NDVI values, contrast texture of NDVI, and entropy texture of Green-Red Normalized Difference Index. Texas Rio Grande Valley Red-crowned Parrot presence was associated with urban areas with high heterogeneity and randomness in the distribution of vegetation and/or its characteristics (e.g., arrangement, type, structure). Maintaining existing preferred vegetation types and incorporating them into new developments should support the persistence of Red-crowned Parrots in southern Texas.

Quantitatively Assessing the Impact of Driving Factors on Vegetation Cover Change in China’s 32 Major Cities

After 2000, China’s vegetation underwent great changes associated with climate change and urbanization. Although many studies have been conducted to quantify the contributions of climate and human activities to vegetation, few studies have quantitatively examined the comprehensive contributions of climate, urbanization, and CO2 to vegetation in China’s 32 major cities. In this study, using Global Land Surface Satellite (GLASS) fractional vegetation cover (FVC) between 2001 and 2018, we investigated the trend of FVC in China’s 32 major cities and quantified the effects of CO2, urbanization, and climate by using generalized linear models (GLMs). We found the following: (1) From 2001 to 2018, the FVC in China generally illustrated an increasing trend, although it decreased in 23 and 21 cities in the core area and expansion area, respectively. (2) Night light data showed that the urban expansion increased to varying degrees, with an average increasing ratio of approximately 168%. The artificial surface area increased significantly, mainly from cropland, forest, grassland, and tundra. (3) Climate factors and CO2 were the major factors that affected FVC change. The average contributions of climate factors, CO2, and urbanization were 40.6%, 39.2%, and 10.6%, respectively. This study enriched the understanding of vegetation cover change and its influencing factors, helped to explain the complex biophysical mechanism between vegetation and environment, and guided sustainable urban development.

A Novel Index to Detect Vegetation in Urban Areas Using UAV-Based Multispectral Images

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with high-resolution multispectral cameras have increasingly been used in urban planning, landscape management, and environmental monitoring as an important complement to traditional satellite remote sensing systems. Interest in urban regeneration projects is on the rise in Korea, and the results of UAV-based urban vegetation analysis are in the spotlight as important data to effectively promote urban regeneration projects. Vegetation indices have been used to obtain vegetation information in a wide area using the multispectral bands of satellites. UAV images have recently been used to obtain vegetation information in a more rapid and precise manner. In this study, multispectral images were acquired using a UAV equipped with a Micasense RedEde MX camera to analyze vegetation indices, such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (GNDVI), Blue Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (BNDVI), Red Green Blue Vegetation Index (RGBVI), Green Red Vegetation Index (GRVI), and Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI). However, in the process of analyzing urban vegetation using the existing vegetation indices, it became clear that the vegetation index values of long-run steel roofing, waterproof coated roofs, and urethane-coated areas are often similar to, or slightly higher than, those of grass. In order to improve the problem of misclassification of vegetation, various equations were tested by combining multispectral bands. Kappa coefficient analysis showed that the squared Red-Blue NDVI index produced the best results when analyzing vegetation reflecting urban land cover. The novel vegetation index developed in this study will be very useful for effective analysis of vegetation in urban areas with various types of land cover, such as long-run steel roofing, waterproof coated roofs, and urethane-coated areas.
