Abstract
The increase in production and consumption of pharmaceuticals and personal care products causes environmental problems. In this study, naproxen and clofibric acid adsorption were studied using Fe3O4-supported UiO-66 (Zr) metal-organic framework (Mag-UiO-66). The adsorption processes were carried out in batch mode at pH value 3.0. The optimum adsorbent quantities, equilibrium periods, pseudo-first-order (PFO), pseudo-second-order (PSO), and intra-particles diffusion kinetic models were calculated. Non-linear Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R), and Sips isotherm equations were applied to experimental data. Thermodynamic analyses of naproxen and clofibric acid adsorption were also carried out in this study. The Langmuir isotherm qm values were found as 14.15 mg/g for naproxen at 308 K and 41.87 mg/g for clofibric acid at 298 K. Both of the adsorption processes were exothermic. MISO (multi-input single-output) fuzzy logic models for removal of both naproxen and clofibric acid adsorptions were designed based on the experimental data to estimate the removal uptake values. It is noteworthy that the results obtained through designed fuzzy logic models matched well with the experimental data and the findings of this study emphasize the validity of designed fuzzy logic models.

Abstract
In this study, a series of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have been synthesized using separately diclofenac, naproxen, and ibuprofen as templates with three different polymerization approaches. Two functional monomers, methacrylic acid (MAA) and 2-vinylpyridine (2-VP), were tested and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) was used as crosslinker; also, template-free polymers (NIPs) were synthesized. It was found that the MIP with the highest retention percentage for diclofenac was the one prepared by the emulsion approach and with MAA (98.3%); for naproxen, the one prepared by the bulk polymerization with MAA (99%); and for ibuprofen, the one synthesized by bulk with 2-VP (97.7%). These three MIPs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric test, Fourier transform infrared, specific area measurements, and surface charge. It was found that the emulsion method allowed particle size control, while the bulk method gave heterogeneous particles. The three evaluated MIPs exhibited thermal stability up to 300 °C, and it was observed that 2-VP confers greater stability to the material. From the BET analysis, it was demonstrated that the MIPs and NIPs evaluated are mesoporous materials with a pore size between 10 and 20 nm. In addition, the monomer influenced the surface charge of the material, since the MAA conferred an acidic point of zero charge (PZC), while the 2-VP conferred a PZC of basic character. Through adsorption isotherms, it was determined that there is a higher adsorption capacity of the MIPs at acidic pH following a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Finally, the MIPs were used to determine the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) understudy in San Luis Potosí, México, wastewater, finding concentrations of 0.642, 0.985, and 0.403 mg L-1 for DCF, NPX, and IBP, respectively.

Abstract
Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have aroused great attention as a new material for the removal or detection of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). However, it is not clear about the superiority and deficiency of MIPs in the process of removing or detecting PPCPs. Herein, we evaluated the performance of MIPs in the aspects of adsorption capacity, binding affinity, adsorption rate, and compatibility to other techniques, and proposed ways to improve its performance. Without regard to the selectivity of MIPs, for the PPCPs adsorption, MIPs surprisingly did not always perform better than the conventional adsorbents (non-imprinted polymers, biochar, activated carbon and resin), indicating that MIPs should be used where selectivity is crucial, for example recovery of specific PPCPs in an environmental sample extraction process. Compared to the traditional solid-phase extraction for PPCPs detection pretreatment, the usage of MIPs as substitute extraction agents could obtain high selectivity of specific substance, due to the uniformity and effectiveness of the specific sites. A promising development in the future would be to combine other simple and rapid quantitative technologies, such as electro/photochemical sensor and catalytic degradation, to realize rapid and sensitive detection of trace PPCPs.

Abstract
Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are synthetic polymers with a predetermined selectivity for a particular analyte or group of structurally related compounds, making them ideal materials for separation processes. Hence, in sample preparation, MIPs are chosen as an excellent material to provide selectivity. Moreover, its use in solid-phase extraction, also referred to as molecular imprinted solid phase extraction (MISPE), is well regarded. In recent years, many papers have been published addressing the utilization of MIPs or MISPE as sorbents in natural product applications, such as synthesis. This review describes the synthesis and characterization of MIPs as a tool in natural product applications.

Abstract
In the last 10 years, we have witnessed an extensive development of instrumental techniques in analytical methods for determination of various molecules and ions at very low concentrations. Nevertheless, the presence of interfering components of complex samples hampered the applicability of new analytical strategies. Thus, additional sample pre-treatment steps were proposed to overcome the problem. Solid sorbents were used for clean-up samples but insufficient selectivity of commercial materials limited their utility. Here, the application of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) or ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs) in the separation processes have recently attracted attention due to their many advantages, such as high selectivity, robustness, and low costs of the fabrication process. Bulk or monoliths, microspheres and core-shell materials, magnetically susceptible and stir-bar imprinted materials are applicable to different modes of solid-phase extraction to determine target analytes and ions in a very complex environment such as blood, urine, soil, or food. The capability to perform a specific separation of enantiomers is a substantial advantage in clinical analysis. The ion-imprinted sorbents gained interest in trace analysis of pollutants in environmental samples. In this review, the current synthetic approaches for the preparation of MIPs and IIPs are comprehensively discussed together with a detailed characterization of respective materials. Furthermore, the use of sorbents in environmental, food, and biomedical analyses will be emphasized to point out current limits and highlight the future prospects for further development in the field.

Abstract
In this study, Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH2 were synthesized and applied to removal of mercury from aqueous solution. The characterizations of UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH2 were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). To investigate the adsorption properties of UiO-66-NH2 for mercury, the experiments of kinetics, isotherm, pH, temperature, and salt concentration were conducted, and the results were compared with those by UiO-66. The result showed that UiO-66-NH2 has a higher adsorption capacity for mercury than UiO-66. The maximum adsorption capacity of UiO-66-NH2 was 223.8 ± 17.8 mg g-1 at 313 K. The salt concentration of NaCl has a significant effect on the adsorption of mercury on UiO-66, while UiO-66-NH2 can maintain the stable adsorption capacity for mercury in the concentration range of 0.1-0.5 M NaCl. Adsorption thermodynamics result indicated that the adsorption process of mercury on UiO-66-NH2 was spontaneous and endothermic. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses showed that the mercury was successfully adsorbed on the surface of UiO-66-NH2 and amino functional group as a soft base played a major role to react with mercury during the adsorption process. Abstract
The adsorptive removal possibility of persistent pharmaceuticals with different charges by activated carbon fiber (ACF) was examined. The pharmaceuticals tested included carbamazepine (CBZ), propranolol (PRO), and diclofenac (DCF), in neutral, cationic, and anionic forms, respectively, which were frequently detected in sewage. The adsorption characteristics of ACF were identified according to the kinetics, isotherm, pH, and ionic strength experiments. The results revealed that ACF can effectively remove these pharmaceuticals, and the adsorption capacities of CBZ, PRO, and DCF by ACF were 1.27 ± 0.06, 1.07 ± 0.08, and 0.95 ± 0.08 mmol g-1, respectively. Moreover, the adsorption of ACF for CBZ was independent of pH and ionic strength, whereas that of anionic diclofenac decreased at alkaline pHs and high concentrations of NaCl. Using a syringe system packed with ACF mat, the scavenging ability of intermittently generated secondary sewage was evaluated. As a result, the residual concentration of PRO and CBZ could not be even detected after consecutive 10 runs in secondary sewage mixture solution. This indicates ACF has the powerful potential for removing pharmaceutical micropollutants in the actual aqueous solutions. FTIR and XPS analyses showed that hydrophobic and π-π interactions and hydrogen bonding contributed to the adsorption process.

Abstract
Bisphenol A (BPA), diethyl phthalate (DEP), and carbamazepine (CBZ) have been widely used in chemical and pharmaceutical fields, and their residues are detected in various environments. Therefore, to find a suitable method for removing the compounds from an aqueous solution, an adsorption method by granular activated charcoal (AC) was studied. To investigate the adsorption properties of AC, its kinetics, equilibrium, pH effects, and regeneration of AC were examined. Moreover, its surface properties (i.e., surface area, pore volume, functional groups, and surface charge) were characterized by N2 adsorption and desorption isotherm, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and zeta potential analyses. Experimental results show that AC has high removal efficiencies for the target compounds at the low initial concentration as well as high estimated adsorption capacities (qm) for DEP, BPA, and CBZ, whose values were 293.4 ± 18.8, 254.9 ± 16.2, and 153.3 ± 1.61 mg/g, respectively. In comparison with other adsorbents based on previously reported results, AC was shown to have generally higher removability for the three compounds than others. Moreover, it was observed that AC's ability to adsorb DEP and BPA was dependent on pH because of hydrolysis and ionization, respectively. Meanwhile, there is no pH effect for CBZ adsorption by AC. After 3 cycles of adsorption/desorption, AC still maintained 92, 100, and 82% of initial adsorption capacities for DEP, BPA, and CBZ, respectively. Therefore, the AC is an effective adsorbent for the removal of endocrine-disrupting chemicals and pharmaceuticals from aqueous solution.

Abstract
Aim: Two approaches based on molecularly imprinted polymers-stir bar sorptive extraction (MIP-SBSE) and -magnetic solid-phase extraction (MIP-MSPE) have been used for extraction of carbamazepine (CBZ) from serum samples. Methodology: In MSPE and SBSE, development was achieved by employing a polycaprolactam coating. The Cecil® chromatographic system equipped with a UV-Vis detector was used for analytical determination of CBZ. Results: The linearity of calibration curves was in the concentration ranges of 0.2–12 and 0.05–12 μg ml-1 for MIP-SBSE and MIP-MSPE, respectively. Conclusion: MIP-MSPE was selected in preference to MIP-SBSE since lower limits of detection were achievable using MIP-MSPE method. The CBZ-MIP-MSPE-HPLC-UV method was successfully applied to CBZ determination in real serum samples of patients receiving CBZ.

Abstract
Contaminants of Emerging Concerns (CECs) have been introduced as one type of recalcitrant pollutant sources in water. In this study, the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac (DCF) has been removed from water solutions using Molecularly Imprinted Polymer (MIP), synthetized via bulk polymerization with allylthiourea (AT) as the functional monomer and using DCF as template (MIP-DCF). DCF detection has been performed by UV spectrophotometer. From the kinetic study in batch mode, approximately 100% of removal is observed by using 10mg of MIP-DCF, with an initial concentration of 5mg/L of DCF at pH7, within 3min and agitated at 25°C. In continuous flow mode study, using a cartridge pre-packed with 10mg of MIP-DCF, a high adsorption capacity of 160mgDCF/g MIP was obtained. To study the porosity of MIPs, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been used. In order to characterize the chemical interaction between monomer and template, the pre-polymerization mixture for MIP and DCF has also been studied by 1H NMR. One of the chemical shift observed has been related to the formation of a complex between amine protons of thiourea group of AT with carboxylic acid on DCF. In conclusion, the developed MIP works as a good adsorbent for DCF removal, and is selective to DCF in the presence of indomethacin and ibuprofen.

Abstract
A stable and porous amino-functionalized zirconium-based metal organic framework (Zr-MOF-NH2) containing missing linker defects was prepared and fully characterized by FTIR, scanning electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and BET surface area measurement. The Zr-MOF-NH2 was then applied as an adsorbent in pipette-tip solid phase extraction (PT-SPE) of carbamazepine. Important parameters affecting extraction efficiency such as pH, sample volume, type and volume of eluent, amount of adsorbent, and number of aspirating/dispensing cycles for sample solution and eluent solvent were investigated and optimized. The best extraction efficiency was obtained when pH of 100 µL of sample solution was adjusted to 7.5 and 5 mg of the sorbent was used. Eluent solvent was 10 µL methanol. Linear dynamic range was found to be between 0.1 and 50 µg L−1 and limit of detection for 10 measurement of blank solution was 0.05 µg L−1. This extraction method was coupled to HPLC and was successfully employed for the determination of carbamazepine in urine and water samples. The strategy combined the advantages of fast and easy operation of PT-SPE with robustness and large adsorption capacity of Zr-MOF-NH2.

Abstract
The effect of pore structure of resin on clofibric acid (CA) adsorption behavior was investigated by using magnetic anion exchange resins (ND-1, ND-2, ND-3) with increasing pore diameter by 11.68, 15.37, 24.94 nm. Resin with larger pores showed faster adsorption rates and a higher adsorption capacity because the more opened tunnels provided by larger pores benefit the CA diffusion into the resin matrix. The ion exchange by the electrostatic interactions between Cl-type resin and CA resulted in chloride releasing to the solution, and the ratio of released chloride to CA adsorption amount decreased from 0.90 to 0.65 for ND-1, ND-2 and ND-3, indicating that non-electrostatic interactions obtain a larger proportional part of the adsorption into the pores. Co-existing inorganic anions and organic acids reduced the CA adsorption amounts by the competition effect of electrostatic interaction, whereas resins with more opened pore structures weakened the negative influence on CA adsorption because of the existence of non-electrostatic interactions. 85.2% and 65.1% adsorption amounts decrease are calculated for resin ND-1 and ND-3 by the negative influence of 1 mmol L-1 NaCl. This weaken effect of organic acid is generally depends on its hydrophobicity (Log Kow) for carboxylic acid and its ionization degree (pKb) for sulfonic acid. The resins could be reused with the slightly decreases by 1.9%, 3.2% and 5.4% after 7 cycles of regeneration, respectively for ND-1, ND-2 and ND-3, suggesting the ion exchange resin with larger pores are against its reuse by the brine solution regeneration.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterisation of a partially substituted calix[4]arene, namely, 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl,25,27-bis[aminoethoxy] 26,28-dihydroxycalix[4]arene are reported. Its interaction with commonly used pharmaceuticals (clofibric acid, diclofenac and aspirin) was investigated by spectroscopic (1H NMR and UV), electrochemical (conductance measurements) and thermal (titration calorimetry) techniques. It is concluded on the basis of the experimental work and molecular simulation studies that the receptor interacts selectively with these drugs. Preliminary studies on the selective extraction of these pharmaceuticals from water by the calix receptor are reported and the potential for a carrier mediated sensor based on this ligand for 'on site' monitoring of pharmaceuticals is discussed.

Abstract
This study demonstrates the use of MIEX resin as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of clofibric acid (CA) and diclofenac (DCF). The adsorption performance of CA and DCF are investigated by a batch mode in single-component or bi-component adsorption system. Various factors influencing the adsorption of CA and DCF, including initial concentration, contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial solution pH, agitation speed, natural organic matter and coexistent anions are studied. The Langmuir model can well describe CA adsorption in single-component system, while the Freundlich model gives better fitting in bi-component system. The DCF adsorption can be well fitted by the Freundlich model in both systems. Thermodynamic analyses show that the adsorption of CA and DCF is an endothermic (ΔH(o) > 0), entropy driven (ΔS(o) > 0) process and more randomness exists in the DCF adsorption process. The values of Gibbs free energy (ΔG(o) < 0) indicate the adsorption of DCF is spontaneous but nonspontaneous (ΔG(o) > 0) for CA adsorption. The kinetic data suggest the adsorption of CA and DCF follow the pseudo-first-order model in both systems and the intra-particle is not the unique rate-limiting step. The adsorption process is controlled simultaneously by external mass transfer and surface diffusion according to the surface diffusion modified Biot number (Bis) ranging from 1.06 to 26.15. Moreover, the possible removal mechanism for CA and DCF is respectively proposed based on the ion exchange stoichiometry.

Abstract
Molecular imprinting technique, regarded as one of the current state-of-the-art researches, was incorporated with the simple dispersive solid-phase extraction (MI-DSPE) in this work for the extraction of triazine herbicides in grape seeds. The atrazine molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were successfully prepared and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The imprinting particles were used as the adsorbent in DSPE. Thus, a simple, rapid and selective method based on MIPs coupled with DSPE was established for the simultaneous cleaning-up and quantitative extraction of four triazine herbicides in grape seeds. The experiment parameters, including type of washing solvents, washing time and type of eluting solvents, were investigated and optimized. The performance of the present method was validated by high-performance liquid chromatography. Good linear responses were obtained in concentration range of 0.010-5.0 µg g(-1)with correlation coefficients (r(2)) higher than 0.9993. The recoveries at two spiked levels (1.0 and 2.0 µg g(-1)) were between 81.2 and 113.0% with relative deviations ranging from 1.2 to 10.7%. The limits of detection were ranged between 0.006 and 0.013 µg g(-1), which were lower than the values required by European regulations.

Abstract
Piezoelectric quartz crystals and analogous gold substrates were electrochemically coated with molecularly imprinted polypyrrole films for pulsed amperometric detection (PAD) of clofibric acid, a metabolite of clofibrate. Cyclic voltammetry data obtained during polymerization and deposited weight estimations revealed a decrease of the polymerization rate with increasing clofibric acid concentration. XPS measurements indicated that clofibric acid could be removed after imprinting with an aqueous ethanol solution, which was further optimized by using PAD. Zeta potential and contact angle measurements revealed differences between molecularly imprinted (MIP) and non-imprinted polymer (NIP) layers. Binding experiments with clofibric acid and other substances showed a pronounced selectivity of the MIP for clofibric acid vs. carbamazepine, but the response of MIP and NIP to 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid was higher than that for clofibric acid. A smooth surface, revealed by AFM measurements, with roughness of 6-8 nm for imprinted and non-imprinted layers, might be a reason for an excessively low density of specific binding sites for clofibric acid. Furthermore, the decreased polymerization rate in the presence of clofibric acid might not result in well-defined polymer structures, which could be the reason for the lower sensitivity.

Abstract
Molecularly imprinted polymers are synthetic polymers possessing specific cavities designed for target molecules. They are prepared by copolymerization of a cross-linking agent with the complex formed from a template and monomers that have functional groups specifically interacting with the template through covalent or noncovalent bonds. Subsequent removal of the imprint template leaves specific cavities whose shape, size, and functional groups are complementary to the template molecule. Because of their predetermined selectivity, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) can be used as ideal materials in wastewater treatment. Especially, MIP-based composites offer a wide range of potentialities in wastewater treatment. This paper reviews the latest applications of MIPs in wastewater treatment, highlights the development of MIP-based composites in wastewater, and offers suggestions for future success in the field of MIPs.

Abstract
A rapid, selective, and sensitive double-template imprinted polymer nanofilm-modified pencil graphite electrode was fabricated for the simultaneous analysis of phosphorus-containing amino acid-type herbicides (glyphosate and glufosinate) in soil and human serum samples. Since both herbicides respond overlapped oxidation peaks and only glyphosate is prone to nitrosation, n-nitroso glyphosate and glufosinate were used as templates for obtaining the well-resolved quantitative differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetric peaks on the proposed sensor. Toward sensor fabrication, a nano-structured polymer film was first grown directly on the electrode via initial immobilization of gold nanoparticles at its surface. This was followed by linking of monomeric (N-methacryloyl-l-cysteine) molecules through S-Au bonds. Subsequently, these molecules were subjected to free radical polymerization, in the presence of templates, cross linker, initiator, and multiwalled carbon nanotubes as pre-polymer mixture. The modified sensor observed wide linear ranges (3.98-176.23 ng mL(-1) and 0.54-3.96 ng mL(-1)) of simultaneous analysis with detection limits as low as 0.35 and 0.19 ng mL(-1) (S/N=3) for glyphosate and glufosinate, respectively, in aqueous samples. The respective oxidation peak potentials of both analytes were found to be substantially apart by 265 mV. This enabled the simultaneous determination of one target in the presence of other, without any cross reactivity, interferences, and false-positives, in real samples.
