Development of gum Arabic/chitosan-infiltrated photoluminescent wooden smart window with multifunctional properties

Photochromic wood materials are very important and appealing for smart windows. Herein, we describe the development of transparent photochromic wood that can change its color under ultraviolet and visible lights. Photoluminescent transparent wood was prepared by delignification of wood followed by infiltration with a combination of gum Arabic/chitosan/acrylic acid (ACA), lanthanide-activated aluminum strontium oxide (LASO) as a photoluminescent, and Genipin as a cross-linking agent. The produced mixture was then infused into the lignin-modified wood substrate. In order to develop a luminescent colorless wood, the LASO phosphor must be well-distributed in the ACA solution without aggregation. According to the colorimetric parameters and photoluminescence spectra, this optically active wooden window switched color from transparent in daylight to green when UV-irradiated. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was employed to examine the morphological features of phosphor nanoparticles. The morphological features of the developed smart wooden window were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray fluorescent spectroscopy (XRF), and energy-dispersive X-ray analyzer (EDX). The mechanical performance was explored by investigating both hardness and resistance to scratches. The luminescent woods displayed an emission band at 518 nm when excited at 365 nm. The superhydrophobic performance and ultraviolet shielding of woods were improved upon increasing the phosphor content.

Exploring the potent hydrolytic activity of chitosan-cerium complex microspheres resin for organophosphorus pesticide degradation

Chitosan is a biocompatible, non-toxic and renewable natural basic polysaccharide that can be cross-linked and reacted with Ce(IV) to form a physiologically active chitosan-Ce(IV) complex. To investigate this novel complex and its potential to hydrolyze phosphate ester bonds, chitosan-cerium complex microspheres resin (CS-CCMR) was prepared from chitosan and ceric ammonium nitrate by reversed-phase suspension cross-linking polymerization. CS-CCMR was characterized, its ability to hydrolyze disodium p-nitrobenzene phosphate (PNPP2Na) and organophosphorus pesticides was investigated, and the hydrolytic mechanism was explored. CS-CCMR was composed of dark yellow microspheres with smooth surfaces and dense pores. It was found that CS-CCMR contained 4.507 mg/g Ce(IV), indicating that coordination polymerization between Ce(IV) and chitosan was successful. The presence of Ce(IV) in CS-CCMR was confirmed by multiple analytical methods and it was found that coordination of Ce(IV) by chitosan was mediated by the nitrogen atom of the amino group and the oxygen atom of the hydroxyl group of chitosan. It was shown that CS-CCMR efficiently hydrolyzed the phosphate ester bonds of PNPP2Na and five organophosphorus pesticides. Hydrolysis of PNPP2Na is potentially accomplished by charge neutralization and nucleophilic substitution. The mechanism of parathion degradation by CS-CCMR involves modification of the nitro group to give aminoparathion, followed by cleavage of the P-O bond to generate diazinphos. Consequently, the novel chitosan-Ce(IV) complex exhibits great efficiency for hydrolysis of phosphate ester bonds and CS-CCMR is expected to be developed as an agent to reduce the possibility of contamination of fruit and vegetable drinks by organophosphorus pesticides.

Single-Step Fabrication of a Dual-Sensitive Chitosan Hydrogel by C-Mannich Reaction: Synthesis, Physicochemical Properties, and Screening of its Cu2+ Uptake

Uncovering the value of waste materials is one of the keys to sustainability. In this current work, valorization of chitosan was pursued to fabricate a novel modified chitosan functional hydrogel using a process-efficient protocol. The fabrication proceeds by a one-pot and single-step C-Mannich condensation of chitosan (3% w/v), glutaraldehyde (20 eq.), and 4-hydroxycoumarin (40 eq.) at 22 °C in 3% v/v acetic acid. The Mannich base modified chitosan hydrogel (CS-MB) exhibits a dual-responsive swelling behavior in response to pH and temperature that has not been observed in any other hydrogel systems. Combining the pre-defined optimal swelling pH (pH = 4) and temperature (T = 22 °C), the CS-MB was screened for its Cu2+ adsorption capacity at this condition. The CS-MB achieved an optimal adsorption capacity of 12.0 mg/g with 1.2 g/L adsorbent dosage after 36 h with agitation. The adsorption of Cu2+ on the surface of CS-MB was verified by EDS, and an overview of the adsorption sites was exhibited by FT-IR. The simply fabricated novel CS-MB hydrogel under investigation presents a unique response to external stimuli that exhibits a promise in heavy metal removal from aqueous media.
