Abstract
Objective Osteoporosis self-care knowledge is essential to encourage the patient's contribution towards controlling the disease. Osteoporosis incidence with various infectious diseases prompts us to conduct a study on osteoporosis knowledge among Tuberculosis (TB) patients. This study aimed to assess osteoporosis-related knowledge and its influencing factors among TB patients. Methods A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted in the TB clinic of Hospital Pulau Pinang, Malaysia, and an osteoporosis knowledge test (OKT), a structured questionnaire, was used to collect data. TB patients aged 18 years and above with compromised bone health were included in the present study. Overall knowledge scores were dichotomized, calculating the mean score, descriptive statistics, and multivariate regression analysis was used to determine the influence of risk factors on knowledge scores. Results Of 337 patients, 129(38.28 %) had good osteoporosis knowledge and 208(61.72 %) had poor knowledge. Among them, 231(68.54 %) were males, and 106(31.45 %) were females, with a mean age of 46.5 ± 17.1 years. The mean ± SD of OKT total score was 10.5 ± 2.0. The mean ± SD of the exercise knowledge score was 5.3 ± 3.4, while the nutrition knowledge score was 5.0 ± 3.2. Male gender (OR 3.86, 95 % CI 1.98-7.53), low-income level (OR 1.92, 95 % CI 1.12-3.30), rural residents (OR 2.49, 95 % CI 1.46-4.27) and participants with no formal education (OR 4.34, 95 % CI 1.11-16.84) or ≤12 years of education (OR 3.63, 95 % CI 1.52-8.65) were significantly responsible for poor OKT score. Conclusion The results indicated that most TB patients had a poor perception of osteoporosis. More extensive strategies should be developed to enhance the campaign of awareness programs among TB patients to improve preventive measures of osteoporosis, such as calcium intake and exercise.

Abstract
RATIONALE Lack of information about osteoporosis knowledge and awareness among premenopausal compared to postmenopausal women in Jordan. MAIN RESULT Women had an average-poor knowledge and awareness about osteoporosis. SIGNIFICANCE This study highlights the need to improve women's knowledge about osteoporosis, its consequences, potential risk factors, preventive measures, and treatment options. PURPOSE To assess osteoporosis knowledge, awareness, and risk factor profile among premenopausal and postmenopausal women from Jordan. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study that involved 490 premenopausal and 488 postmenopausal women from the general population of Jordan. Face-to-face interviews were conducted to collect the sociodemographic and clinical data and to complete the Osteoporosis Knowledge Assessment Tool (OKAT) questionnaire. RESULTS Premenopausal and postmenopausal women had an average-poor level of knowledge and awareness regarding osteoporosis, with a total mean score of 51.3 and 50.9, respectively, out of the total OKAT score of 100. More than 50% of premenopausal women correctly answered 11 questions, while >50% of postmenopausal women correctly answered 9 questions out of 20 in OKAT, which are related to knowledge and awareness about osteoporosis. The participants' marital status (being married), higher educational level, and higher economic status were significantly associated with better knowledge and awareness about osteoporosis (p-values < 0.05). Postmenopausal women had higher osteoporosis risk profile including older age, higher body mass index, less regular exercise, and less exposure to sunlight versus premenopausal women. CONCLUSION Premenopausal and postmenopausal women from Jordan had an average-poor level of knowledge and awareness about osteoporosis. Higher educational levels and higher income are associated with better knowledge and awareness about osteoporosis. It is therefore crucial to improve the knowledge of women in Jordan about osteoporosis and its consequences, as well as the potential risk factors, preventive measures, and treatment options. Conducting periodic osteoporosis awareness and educational campaigns are necessary to spread the awareness of the disease.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scanning is a rapid and accurate noninvasive procedure utilized to measure bone mineral density (BMD) and diagnose osteoporosis. The primary objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of osteoporosis in different regions of the body using DEXA scanning in patients attending a tertiary care private hospital. Additionally, we aimed to raise awareness about approved diagnostic methods for osteoporosis. METHODOLOGY For this retrospective study, a sample size of 384 participants was determined. The selection of participants was based on convenience sampling, considering their availability and accessibility. Data were collected from adult patients aged 18 years and above who underwent DEXA scanning. The information was compiled using Microsoft Excel, obtained from the patient's treating physicians, and evaluated by two medical graduates. Statistical analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 26.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). RESULTS The findings unveiled an overarching osteoporosis prevalence of 38.5%, accompanied by distinctive figures of 38.7%, 8.9%, and 38.4% in the lumbar, hip, and forearm regions, respectively. Furthermore, the occurrence of osteopenia was found in 33% of participants in the lumbar region, 35.1% in the hip region, and 39.7% in the forearm region. Additionally, no significant association was found between gender and overall osteoporosis prevalence, suggesting that the susceptibility to osteoporosis did not significantly differ between genders. Moreover, the study emphasized the variations in bone density across different skeletal regions, with the forearm region displaying the lowest mean T-score and Z-score. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study on osteoporosis prevalence in the lumbar, hip, and forearm regions indicate varying rates among these skeletal sites. Notably, both male and female patients demonstrated an equal susceptibility to developing osteoporosis. Interestingly, the forearm region emerged as the most common site for osteoporosis in males (34.6%), while the lumbar region was the most common in females (41.6%).

Abstract
Objectives
Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder associated with weak and brittle bones, and more susceptible to fracture. Osteo-protective behaviours, such as exercise, may prevent osteoporosis. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the factors influencing the exercise behaviour in Malaysian adults and to assess their health beliefs and self-regulation in preventing osteoporosis.
Methods
A cross-sectional, self-administered questionnaire was conducted throughout Malaysia through a web-based or physical-based survey. The questionnaire consisted of three sections: demographic data, ten questions regarding social and family history related to osteoporosis and 38 questions with seven subdomains (i.e. susceptibility, seriousness, barriers, benefits, health motivation, self-efficacy and self-regulation) which measured the health belief scores and self-regulation using 5-point Likert scale. Descriptive, inferential analysis and linear regression were used to analyse the data.
Key findings
A total of 679 participants completed the questionnaire. The mean health belief score was 63.7%, which was moderate. Most participants (64.4%) perceived low susceptibility to osteoporosis [mean score = 47.0%, standard deviation (SD) = 16.2]. Participants with age 18–27 years (44.8%), single (45.0%) and monthly income <RM 1000 (45.2%), perceived significant lower susceptibility to osteoporosis. Participants’ perception scores were high on the benefits of exercise (75.7%, SD = 16.4), health motivation (74.9%, SD = 17.1) and perceived low barriers to exercise (71.7%, SD = 14.9). Respondents who were at risk of osteoporosis and with family and friends diagnosed with osteoporosis obtained a higher score than those who did not.
Conclusions
The health belief score in the Malaysian population was moderate. However, the majority of participants were unaware of the susceptibility and seriousness of osteoporosis. Efforts need to be taken to break the barriers associated with exercise in preventing osteoporosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteoporosis is one of the most common chronic musculoskeletal diseases. Osteoporosis-related knowledge is an important contributor in to prevent osteoporosis. There is no validated reliable questionnaire to measure the knowledge in Hungary. The aim of the study was to validate the Osteoporosis Knowledge Assessment Tool (OKAT) Hungarian version. METHODS The research was a randomized validation study of a new Hungarian language instrument. The questionnaire was administered to 557 randomly selected healthy women (age between 25 and 44 years) from December 2018 to July 2019 in Baranya county, Hungary. The reliability was examined by the Flesch reading ease and McNemar's test. We examined item discrimination and item-total correlations, inter-item consistency (Cronbach's alpha coefficient) and principal component factor analysis. RESULTS Significant differences (p < 0.001) were reported between total scores and the age categories. Significant (p < 0.001) correlation (r = 0.25) was found between the education level and the knowledge. Significantly (p < 0.001) higher knowledge were found in health care profession (14.53 ± 3.58) than the non-health care profession (9.99 ± 4.04). Participants with osteoporosis or fracture in family history had better knowledge (p < 0.001). Flesch reading ease was 44, the questionnaire had a Ferguson's sigma of 0.94 and a Cronbach's alpha of 0.81. There were no negative inter-item correlations psychometric properties of the OKAT, all items had more than 70% of correlations (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The Hungarian version of the Osteoporosis Knowledge Assessment Tool is a reliable and objective questionnaire to measure women's knowledge in Hungary.

Abstract
Osteoporosis is a growing health problem worldwide. Health beliefs and self-efficacy in regard to osteoporosis may be important targets in preventive behaviours. This study aimed to describe beliefs around osteoporosis held by orthopaedic nurses as well as the nurses' self-efficacy and the associations between knowledge, health beliefs and self-efficacy. A cross-sectional study was conducted with nurses working in orthopaedic departments in 13 tertiary hospitals in Hunan Province, China. Participants completed a questionnaire consisting of the Osteoporosis Health Belief Scale (OHBS), the Osteoporosis Self-Efficacy Scale (OSES) and a survey of their socio-demographic characteristics. A total of 558 nurses completed the survey (response rate 95%). The nurses' scores regarding their perception of the susceptibility to and seriousness of osteoporosis were moderately low (mean OHBS score = 124.72, range 45-171; SD = 14.71), while their corresponding self-efficacy scores were moderately high (mean OSES score = 72.01, range 0-120; SD = 23.15). Knowledge regarding osteoporosis was positively associated with self-efficacy (r = 0.232, p = 0.000) but not with health beliefs (r = 0.030, p = 0.484). The findings of this study revealed moderately high self-efficacy and moderate health beliefs related to osteoporosis among orthopaedic nurses. Osteoporosis knowledge was not associated with health beliefs or self-efficacy. The findings indicate that educational programs should not only focus on knowledge improvement but also changes in health beliefs to improve actual behaviour in practice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Osteoporosis associated with premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and early menopause (EM) is a major concern for women. We aimed to (a) identify information and knowledge gaps and behaviours regarding bone health in women with POI/EM and (b) co-design an osteoporosis fact sheet. DESIGN Mixed-methods study: survey of women and online resource appraisals to develop and refine, using semi-structured interviews, an osteoporosis fact sheet. PATIENTS Women with POI/EM (menopause before ages 40 and 45 years respectively). MEASUREMENTS Demographics, comorbidities, information needs, calcium intake, exercise, osteoporosis knowledge (OKAT), beliefs and self-efficacy, DISCERN appraisal (validated scales). ANALYSIS descriptive statistics, logistic regression and thematic analysis of interviews. RESULTS Median age of survey respondents (n = 316) was 54(IQR47-63) years, median age of menopause was 40(IQR38-43) years, and osteoporosis diagnosis was reported in 19%. Most reported inadequate dietary calcium intake (99%) and exercise (65%). Median OKAT score 8 [IQR6-10]/19 indicated knowledge gaps regarding risk factors and treatment options. Adjusting for age and education, OKAT predicted calcium intake (OR 1.126 [CI 1.035-1.225]; P = 0.006) and screening (OR 1.186 [CI 1.077-1.305]; P = 0.001); beliefs predicted screening (OR 1.027 [CI 1.004-1.050]; P = 0.019); and self-efficacy predicted calcium intake (OR1.040 (CI 1.013-1.069); P = 0.003] and exercise (OR 1.117 [CI 1.077-1.160]; P < 0.001). Current online resources have deficiencies. Five themes identified from two interview rounds (n = 10/ round) were as follows: content, emotional response, design, perceived usefulness and clinical considerations. The final fact sheet was considered acceptable and useful in addressing knowledge gaps, promoting information-seeking, impacting behaviours and facilitating healthcare discussions. CONCLUSION A co-designed fact sheet is acceptable and addresses identified osteoporosis knowledge gaps in women with POI/EM.

Abstract
Background:Osteoporosis is a major public health problem as the majority of people are not aware of the disease until the complications occur.Objective:The aims of this study were to validate Osteoporosis Knowledge Tool (OKT-A) Arabic version and to assess the osteoporosis knowledge among Iraqi general population.Methods:A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in the city of Baghdad with a random cluster sampling method from the community. Forward–backward-forward translation method was used to translate the OKT questionnaire from English into Arabic language. The psychometric assessment process includes: face validity, reliability (Cronbach’s alpha and test-retest), item difficulty index, point biserial correlation and discriminatory power.Results:The results showed good face validity. The Cronbach’s alpha and Pearson correlation coefficient of the test re-test reliability were 0.775 and 0.412, respectively. Item difficulty index, point biserial correlation ranges and discriminatory power were 0.105 to 0.852, 0.105 to 0.445 and 0.933, respectively. These results demonstrated that OKT-A was a reliable and stable tool. The results showed low OKT-A scores 11.50±3.958. Furthermore, the OKT-A scores and its subscales were less than 50%. In addition, there were significant differences between the following independent variables in relation to total OKT-A scores: educational level, do you have osteoporosis or ever heard about osteoporosis. Moreover, there was a significant association between ever heard about osteoporosis groups and the OKT-A knowledge levels.Conclusion:This study showed good validity and reliability of OKT-A tool among Arabic general population. In addition, the results showed an urgent need for implementing an educational programme and should be a public health practice to increase the knowledge toward osteoporosis and its related risk factor.

Abstract
Objectives: Osteoporosis continues to be underrecognized in many parts of India. This study was undertaken to assess the level of knowledge of osteoporosis among postmenopausal women referred for a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan in a teaching hospital in southern India. Methodology: This cross-sectional study assessed the state of awareness in consecutive postmenopausal women referred for a DXA scan using a validated questionnaire – Osteoporosis Knowledge Assessment Tool. The proportion of correct responses was expressed as percentages. The mean scores obtained were also compared between different educational groups. Results: A total of 302 consecutive postmenopausal women who were referred for DXA participated in this study. The mean (standard deviation) age of the postmenopausal women included in this study was 58.8 (6) years. Although most subjects were aware of the consequences of osteoporosis, there was generalized lack of awareness with regard to risk factors and available treatment options. Overall about 60% had poor awareness about osteoporosis. Conclusion: This study showed a gross deficit in awareness of osteoporosis in Indian postmenopausal women. There is a need to prioritize on designing appropriate awareness campaigns in subjects at risk, according to their level of literacy.

Abstract
Osteoporosis is a major public health problem affecting millions of people worldwide. Increasing knowledge, correcting health belief and promoting osteoprotective practices are effective measures for building and maintaining strong bone throughout ones’ life-span. This review aims to summarize the contemporary evidence on the knowledge, beliefs and practice of adolescents and young adults on bone health. We performed literature searches using the PubMed and Scopus databases to identify original studies from 2008 to May 2018 using the search terms “(knowledge OR beliefs OR attitude OR practice OR behaviours OR physical activity OR exercise OR diet OR nutrition) AND (young OR youth OR adolescents OR children OR young adults OR students OR teenager) AND (osteoporosis OR bone health)”. Of the 3206 articles found, 34 met the inclusion criteria. Studies showed that most adolescents and young adults had poor knowledge and expressed disinterest in osteoporosis. They believed that other diseases were more serious than osteoporosis, contributing to low perceived susceptibility and seriousness towards this disease. Popular media emerged as a platform to obtain information regarding osteoporosis. The lack of knowledge and misconceptions about osteoporosis led to poor osteoprotective practices. As a conclusion, the current evidence revealed a lack of awareness about osteoporosis among adolescents and young adults. Educational interventions may be useful to improve the awareness of osteoporosis among this population.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Wide disparities in knowledge of risk factors and prevention of osteoporosis were demonstrated among midlife Israeli minority women (Arabs and immigrants from the former USSR) compared to Jewish long-time residents. Women who believed osteoporosis to be a serious disease and those who felt susceptible to it reported better knowledge. PURPOSE The main goals of this study were to assess knowledge of risk factors and preventive measures for osteoporosis in middle-aged women and to evaluate the relationship of knowledge to personal risk factors and personal perceptions about osteoporosis. METHODS Face-to-face interviews with women aged 45-64 years were conducted during 2004-2006 within three population groups: long-term Jewish residents (LTJRs), immigrants from the former Soviet Union, and Arab women. The survey instrument included five knowledge statements related to the risk after menopause, the risk of smoking, family history of fractures, decreased risk by physical activity, and by use of medications. RESULTS The findings indicated wide disparities in knowledge about risk factors and preventive behavior of osteoporosis between the two minority groups (immigrants from the former Soviet Union and Arab women) and the majority group of midlife Israeli women. Knowledge of osteoporosis was related to perceived severity of the disease and partly to perceived susceptibility to osteoporosis. Past diagnosis of osteoporosis, current or past smoking status, and BMI were unrelated to knowledge in multivariate analyses. CONCLUSIONS There is a need to improve knowledge of osteoporosis especially among less educated and minority women. Subjective perception of risk was more strongly related to knowledge than actual risk factors and should be targeted in public campaigns. The efforts should be aimed at strengthening women's perception of their own susceptibility to osteoporosis and of the severity of this disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteoporosis is a potential metabolic complication of diabetes mellitus (DM). Therefore, patients with DM should have adequate osteoporosis knowledge and beliefs in order to get engaged in osteoporosis preventive behaviors. The objective of this study was to assess osteoporosis knowledge and beliefs among diabetic patients. METHODS This was a cross sectional study carried out at Al-Makhfiah governmental primary healthcare unit in Nablus, Palestine from September 2016 to December 2016. The tools used to assess knowledge and beliefs were Osteoporosis Health Belief Scale (OHBS) and the Osteoporosis Knowledge Test (OKT) respectively. RESULTS Three hundred diabetic patients were interviewed regarding their knowledge and belief about osteoporosis. The study sample included 192 (64.0%) females. Mean ± standard deviation (SD) of the participants was 58.5 ± 9.3 years. Regarding co-morbidities, 229 (76.3%) had at least one co-morbidity other than DM. The majority of participants incorrectly answered 19 out of 32 questions of OKT scale. The mean OKT score was 13.5 ± 4.2 indicating poor osteoporosis - related knowledge. Females had significantly higher nutrition (p = 0.037), exercise (p = 0.043), and OKT score (p = 0.021) than males. Regarding OHBS, female participants had significantly higher belief score of susceptibility (p < 0.01) and seriousness (p < 0.01) of osteoporosis compared to males. CONCLUSIONS Diabetic patients had poor osteoporosis knowledge and moderate perception of susceptibility and seriousness of osteoporosis. These results require implementation of awareness programs among DM patients to increase their practices regarding preventive measures of osteoporosis such as calcium intake and exercise.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Students in relevant health-care academic programs are the future professionals who should play an active role in increasing community awareness regarding chronic diseases such as osteoporosis. This research aimed to evaluate the knowledge of osteoporosis, one of the growing health-care burdens in Malaysia, among students belong to three different health occupations programs in a Malaysian University. METHODS A cross-sectional study design was conducted to assess the level of knowledge on osteoporosis and to explore the potential association between the study program and osteoporosis-related knowledge among medicine, pharmacy, and allied health sciences students in a Malaysian University. A total of 348 students were approached. The data were collected using validated revised Osteoporosis Knowledge Test questionnaire. RESULTS The results showed variability in knowledge score between students belonging to different study programs. allied health sciences students have the highest overall total score (median = 20) and nutrition score (median = 16), but for exercise score, both students in allied health sciences and medicine programs shared a similar median score (median = 11.5). More than half of the respondents showed adequate knowledge on osteoporosis. The students from allied health sciences exhibited more knowledge on osteoporosis compared to students in other study programs. Among the Kulliyyah of Pharmacy respondents, the majority did not manage to answer correctly on the whole scale. This was evident by total percentage of 69.91% of the respondents scored below than median score. CONCLUSION There is a considerable gap of knowledge regarding osteoporosis among students in various health occupations academic programs. Pharmacy students particularly need focused learning related to exercise and nutrition in preventing osteoporosis during their academic program.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the relationship between bone-specific physical activity (BPAQ) scores, body composition, and bone mineral density (BMD) in healthy young college women. METHODS Seventy-three college women (21.7 ± 1.8 years; 162.1 ± 4.6 cm; 53.9 ± 5.8 kg) between the ages of 19 and 26 years were recruited from the universities in Seoul and Gyeonggi province, South Korea. We used dual energy X-ray absorptiometry to measure the lumbar spine (L2-L4) and proximal femur BMD (left side; total hip, femoral neck). The BPAQ scores (past, pBPAQ; current, cBPAQ; total, tBPAQ) were used to obtain a comprehensive account of lifetime physical activity related to bone health. We used X-scan plus II instrumentation to measure height (cm), weight (kg), fat free mass (FFM, kg), percent body fat (%), and body mass index (BMI). Participants were asked to record their 24-hour food intake in a questionnaire. RESULTS There were positive correlations between BPAQ scores and total hip (pBPAQ r = 0.308, p = 0.008; tBPAQ, r = 0.286, p = 0.014) and FN BMD (pBPAQ r = 0.309, p = 0.008; tBPAQ, r = 0.311, p = 0.007), while no significant relationships were found in cBPAQ (p > 0.05). When FFM, Vitamin D intake, cBPAQ, pBPAQ, and tBPAQ were included in a stepwise multiple linear regression analysis, FFM and pBPAQ were predictors of total hip, accounting for 16% (p = 0.024), while FFM and tBPAQ predicted 14% of the variance in FN (p = 0.015). Only FFM predicted 15% of the variance in L2-L4 (p = 0.004). There was a positive correlation between Vitamin D intake and L2-L4 (p = 0.025), but other dietary intakes variables were not significant (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS BPAQ-derived physical activity scores and FFM were positively associated with total hip and FN BMD in healthy young college women. Our study suggests that osteoporosis awareness and effective bone healthy behaviors for college women are required to prevent serious bone diseases later in life.

Abstract
A previous systematic review on osteoporosis knowledge published showed that only several studies investigated osteoporosis knowledge in health professionals, and it found that their knowledge was not as adequate and sufficient as it should be. Since then, studies published on osteoporosis knowledge among health professionals have also assessed and found that they still do not have adequate and sufficient osteoporosis knowledge. To increase and improve osteoporosis knowledge among health professionals, recommendations in osteoporosis education in the health professions, including the application of the cognitive load theory, online learning, problem-based learning, practical learning, simulation-based learning, interactive learning, and feedback are covered in order to ensure health professionals can have adequate and sufficient osteoporosis knowledge to best prevent and treat individuals with the disease.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Individuals with HIV are at increased risk for osteoporosis and fracture. Using the Health Beliefs Model, we identified key relationships between knowledge, self-efficacy and health beliefs pertaining to physical activity and dietary calcium intake, two key modifiable preventive measures for osteoporosis. PURPOSE Individuals with HIV are at increased risk for osteoporosis and fracture. Few studies have systematically explored concerns related to osteoporosis prevention among this group. Applying the Health Beliefs Model (HBM), we examined associations between osteoporosis-related preventive health behaviors (i.e., physical exercise and dietary intake) and knowledge, self-efficacy and health beliefs in a large cohort of Chinese individuals with HIV. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study with participants from an ongoing multi-center trial. Volunteers completed a questionnaire consisting of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), a calcium and vitamin D intake assessment, the Osteoporosis Knowledge Test, Osteoporosis Self-Efficacy Scale, Osteoporosis Health Beliefs Scale, and relevant sociodemographic and clinical risk factors. RESULTS A total of 263 of 297 eligible participants enrolled in this study. Mean age of participants was 38.4 ± 9.8 years, average BMI was 21.6 ± 2.6 kg/m(2), and 76 % were men. About 30 % of the sample reported low physical activity. Consumption of foods from each calcium and vitamin D-rich category averaged between multiple times per month to weekly. Knowledge regarding osteoporosis was universally low and self-efficacy correlated directly with engagement in preventive behaviors. Women and individuals with lower education perceived greater barriers to adopting preventive behaviors. Multivariate logistic regression adjusted for age, sex and BMI showed that calcium and vitamin D intake was directly correlated with knowledge and self-efficacy, whereas physical activity correlated with manual labor occupation, perceived barriers to exercise and health motivation. CONCLUSIONS Behavioral frameworks such as the HBM may provide important insight into promoting adoption and maintenance of osteoporosis-related preventive behaviors among individuals with HIV.
