Adsorption of copper ions from aqueous media using montmorillonite-Al2O3 nano-adsorbent incorporated with Fe3O4 for facile separation

Superhydrophobic Al2O3/MMT-PDMS Coated Fabric for Self-Cleaning and Oil-Water Separation Application

This study introduces a novel superhydrophobic coating applied to the fabric surface through spray coating of the Al2O3/MMT nanocomposite and PDMS polymer to enhance the surface roughness and reduce the surface tension, respectively. The as-prepared coating exhibits a remarkable superhydrophobic property with a water contact angle (WCA) of ∼174.6° and a water sliding angle (WSA) < 5°. Notably, the fabric demonstrates a self-cleaning property through removing dust and dirt via adhering to water droplets. Moreover, the insignificant loss of WCA (3.2 and 1%) after exposure to alkaline and acidic media for 10 days verifies the promising chemical stability of the coated layer, whereas WCA > 160° after 24 h of immersion in various organic solvents further indicates the layer resistance. Besides, the layer sustains WCA of 174.5, 172.5, and 168.45° after 1 month of air exposure, ultrasonic washing, and 50 cycles of home laundry. The mechanical resistance of the fabric was verified by maintaining a WCA of 158.73° after 200 abrasion cycles. Also, the layer exhibits thermal resistance with <4.1% of WCA loss in the temperature range of -10 to 180 °C. Additionally, the superhydrophobic coating excels in oil-water separation, achieving >99% separation efficiency for various oils. These exceptional properties position the fabric for diverse applications, including protective clothing, outdoor gear, medical textiles, and sportswear, emphasizing its versatility and novelty in the realm of superhydrophobic materials.

Water treatment by forward osmosis using novel D-Xylose coated magnetic nanoparticles as draw agent

In this study, D-Xylose coated MNPs were synthesized and used as draw agent in forward osmosis (FO) process for water purification. Response surface methodology (RSM) was utilized for the design and optimization of synthesis parameters. In order to characterize the synthesized MNPs, FTIR, TEM, VSM, and UV characterization techniques were performed. The effect of independent parameters including D-Xylose mass, MNPs mass, and synthesis time on the osmotic pressure was investigated. Based on the optimization results, the osmotic pressure of a 2 wt./v% draw solution using 2.66 g D-Xylose, 0.13 g MNPs, and a 7.11 h synthesis time was 0.81 bar as the highest value. Using D-Xylose coated MNPs as draw agent and deionized water as the feed, the initial FO water flux was 2.98 LMH. Reusing the recovered MNP draw agent in two more consecutive tests resulted in the reduction of water flux to 2.68 and 2.30 LMH, respectively. Moreover, using 0.01 M NaCl solution as the feed, the initial water flux was reported as 1.3 LMH. To remove the draw agents from suspension, external magnetic field was applied to obtain a water turbidity of 0.08 NTU.

Enhanced Production of Bacterial Cellulose from Miscanthus as Sustainable Feedstock through Statistical Optimization of Culture Conditions

Biorefineries are attracting attention as an alternative to the petroleum industry to reduce carbon emissions and achieve sustainable development. In particular, because forests play an important role in potentially reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net zero, alternatives to cellulose produced by plants are required. Bacterial cellulose (BC) can prevent deforestation and has a high potential for use as a biomaterial in various industries such as food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. This study aimed to improve BC production from lignocellulose, a sustainable feedstock, and to optimize the culture conditions for Gluconacetobacter xylinus using Miscanthus hydrolysates as a medium. The productivity of BC was improved using statistical optimization of the major culture parameters which were as follows: temperature, 29 °C; initial pH, 5.1; and sodium alginate concentration, 0.09% (w/v). The predicted and actual values of BC production in the optimal conditions were 14.07 g/L and 14.88 g/L, respectively, confirming that our prediction model was statistically significant. Additionally, BC production using Miscanthus hydrolysates was 1.12-fold higher than in the control group (commercial glucose). Our result indicate that lignocellulose can be used in the BC production processes in the near future.
