Abstract
Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is a 3D spinal deformity and mostly affects children in the age group of 10-16 years. Bracing is the most widely recommended nonoperative treatment modality for scoliosis in children. Scoliosis brace fabrication techniques have continuously evolved and currently use traditional plaster casting, computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), or 3D printing. This is a mini narrative literature review. The objective of our study is to conduct a narrative review of traditional, CAD-CAM and 3D printed brace manufacture. A narrative literature review of scoliosis brace manufacturing methods was conducted using PubMed, Cochrane, and other databases with appropriate keywords. Data were also collected from white papers of manufacturing companies. A total of 53 articles on scoliosis bracing manufacture were selected from various sources and subjected to detailed review. The shortlisted papers focused on Chêneau derivatives and Boston braces. Computer-aided design-CAM brace fabrication had similar curve correction compared with traditional plaster-cast braces; however, patient satisfaction may be greater in CAD-CAM braces. Traditional brace fabrication using plaster casting may be uncomfortable to patients. Computer-aided design-CAM and 3D printed braces may enhance comfort by augmenting the breathability and reducing brace weight. 3D printing is the most recently used brace fabrication method. 3D printing enables the manufacture of customized braces that can potentially enhance patient comfort and compliance and curve correction. 3D printing may also ease the bracing experience for patients and enhance the productivity of brace making.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pressure pads are used with scoliosis braces to adjust the magnitude and location of corrective forces that mechanically support the torso to correct the spine deformity. In the conventional brace (C.B.) design approaches, the location and shape of pads are determined based on the visual assessment of the clinician. The accuracy of this approach could be improved because it is limited to the clinician's expertise. The present study aimed to develop a new brace (N.B.) padding method based on trunk asymmetry for adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis and compare the efficacy of the developed method with C.B. in improving the Cobb angle and body posture symmetricity. METHODS The trunk surface geometry was scanned using a 3-dimensional scanner. The best plane of symmetry was determined, and the original trunk was reflected in the plane of symmetry, creating the reflected trunk. The difference between the reflected and original trunks was computed and color-coded using deviation contour maps. The boundary of deformed regions, with a minimum of 6-mm deviation contour maps, was identified as the trim lines for brace pads. Eight participants were recruited and divided into conventional and new padding groups. The variation of Cobb angle and torso asymmetry parameters, including the trunk rotation and back surface rotation, as well as the brace satisfaction and trunk appearance perception of the 2 groups, were compared after 3 months of treatment. RESULTS Cobb angle improved equally in the N.B. and C.B. groups. However, back surface rotation improved in the N.B. group (+49.6%) and worsened in the C.B. group (-6.8%). The mean trunk rotation was improved by 30% in the N.B. and further exacerbated by -2.2% in the C.B. group. The brace satisfaction and trunk appearance perception scores were higher in the N.B. than in the C.B. group, however not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS The present study showed that the proposed brace padding system improved the trunk appearance without negatively affecting the Cobb angle correction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although bracing for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis can prevent curve progression and reduce the risk for future surgery, children frequently do not wear their braces as prescribed. The purpose of this study is to investigate how a broad array of psychosocial characteristics predict future compliance with scoliosis brace wear. METHODS This was a single institution, prospective cohort study. All adolescents prescribed a first-time brace for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis were eligible. Patients and their parents completed a separate series of questionnaires that assessed baseline psychosocial characteristics across 6 domains: (1) brace-specific attitudes; (2) body image and self-esteem; (3) school performance and social relationships; (4) psychological health; (5) family functioning; and (6) demographics and scoliosis-specific details (242 total questions across 12 validated questionnaires). Objective brace compliance was collected using temperature-sensitive monitors. Defining compliance as percentage of brace prescription completed, comparative analyses were performed to identify baseline psychosocial characteristics that were associated with future wear. A composite measure (Bracing Fidelity Follow-Up Scale [BFFS]) of the 12 most predictive individual questions across all domains (both parent and adolescent) was constructed to help assess which adolescents were at highest risk of failure to wear their brace. Total BFFS score for each parent-adolescent dyad who completed all the included surveys was then determined by awarding one point for each factor that positively influenced future brace wear (maximum 12 points), and a correlation was calculated between total score and percent adherence to prescribed brace wear. RESULTS A total of 41 patients were included. On average, patients with high self-esteem, above average peer relationships and poor brace-specific attitudes had lower brace compliance, although patients with increased loneliness and parental religiousness had higher compliance. Body image, socioeconomic status, family dynamics, and school performance had no significant relationship with brace use. Total score on the Bracing Fidelity Follow-Up Scale (BFFS) was significantly associated with improved brace wear (r=0.687, P <0.001). Those with a score of 6 or above (n=15/33 [45%], median compliance 96%) were more reliable users (15/15 with compliance >75%), and those with a score of 5 or less (n=18/33 [55%], median compliance 50%) had less consistent brace wear (9/18 with compliance <50%). CONCLUSION This prospective study identifies numerous baseline psychosocial factors that are associated with future compliance with scoliosis brace wear. Although in need of further validation before widespread clinical application, the novel BFF scale offers a potential opportunity to partially discriminate between compliant and noncompliant scoliosis brace users such that supportive resources (eg, supportive counseling, peer-support groups, additional provider-based education, etc.) can be targeted to those patients most likely to benefit. Abstract
Spinal deformity is an abnormality in the spinal curves and can seriously affect the activities of daily life. The conventional way to treat spinal deformities, such as scoliosis, kyphosis, and spondylolisthesis, is to use spinal orthoses (braces). Braces have been used for centuries to apply corrective forces to the spine to treat spinal deformities or to stabilize the spine during postoperative rehabilitation. Braces have not modernized with advancements in technology, and very few braces are equipped with smart sensory design and active actuation. There is a need to enable the orthotists, ergonomics practitioners, and developers to incorporate new technologies into the passive field of bracing. This article presents a review of the conventional passive braces and highlights the advancements in spinal orthoses in terms of improved sensory designs, active actuation mechanisms, and new construction methods (CAD/CAM, three-dimensional (3D) printing). This review includes 26 spinal orthoses, comprised of passive rigid/soft braces, active dynamics braces, and torso training devices for the rehabilitation of the spine.

Abstract
The main issue that may be encountered during brace treatment of idiopathic scoliosis is the patient's compliance. While compliance with full-time brace treatment has been well documented, compliance with night-time brace treatment has not. The main feature of night-time braces is their ability to overcorrect the scoliotic curvature, which could decrease compliance. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate objectively the compliance of patients with idiopathic scoliosis when undergoing treatment by means of a night-time overcorrection brace. Twenty patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis were prescribed treatment with an overcorrection brace for 8 h per night. Compliance was determined by the percentage of actual hours the brace was worn relative to the prescribed regimen. Compliance was measured during 1 year via a hidden temperature monitor embedded within the brace. Patients were informed that their compliance was monitored. The brace acceptance period and the full acceptance period were analysed, and correlations were measured. The average compliance (% wearing hours/prescribed regimen) was 90.7%; 45% of the participants met or exceeded the prescribed brace time. Three girls were lost to follow-up. The mean acceptance period was 22,8 days, and half of the patients succeeded in achieving the acceptance period in less than 7 days. The mean full acceptance period was 26,9 days. The acceptance period was significantly and negatively correlated with the mean wearing time (r = -0,61, P = 0,004). There was no correlation between the in-brace overcorrection and the wearing time. These results suggest that patients with an overcorrection night-time brace had good compliance. The overcorrection did not seem to influence compliance. The first weeks of treatment seemed to be crucial for treatment compliance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a lack of evidence in reliability of the modified sphygmomanometer to measure the brace-interface pad pressure in adolescents with Scheuermann's kyphosis (SK). OBJECTIVES To evaluate the intra- and inter-observer reliability of modified sphygmomanometer for measuring interface pad pressure in the Milwaukee brace. METHODS Two observers measured the pressure of the shoulder and kyphosis pads in Milwaukee brace on 33 adolescents with SK with an average age of 14.67 ± 1.72 years and Cobb angle 64.48∘± 7.53∘. All measurements were obtained in one day. The measurements were done in the inhalation and exhalation of tidal breathing during standing and sitting positions. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), 95% confidence interval (CI), and linear mixed model ANOVA effects were calculated. RESULTS The intra-observer reliability varied from a good ICC of 0.81 (0.66-0.90) to an excellent of 0.97 (0.95-0.98). The inter-observer reliability also varied from a good ICC of 0.82 (0.67-0.91) to an excellent of 0.96 (0.93-0.98). The linear mixed model ANOVA analysis showed that the rater, position, and breathing had a significant effect on the pad pressure measurements. CONCLUSIONS The modified sphygmomanometer is a reliable tool to measure the pad pressure of the Milwaukee brace for adolescents with SK.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A small body of data exists concerning psychosocial issues in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) subjected to soft braces. No study was yet performed on the detailed psychosocial implications in AIS patients. OBJECTIVE To compare the psychosocial implications of the flexible SpineCor with the Cheneau orthosis in AIS females. METHODS Patients (aged 10-18 years) deliberately assigned to undergo SpineCor (SC group, 30 patients) or Cheneau brace (Ch group, 41 patients) intervention completed the Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS-22), the Spinal Appearance Questionnaire (SAQ), the Brace Questionnaire (BrQ) and the Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument (PODCI). RESULTS Concerning the BrQ, study groups differ in regards to emotional functioning (p= 0.014), vitality (p= 0.022) and social functioning (p= 0.048), indicating better functioning in the Ch group. Considering the SAQ, the Ch group assesses body curve (p= 0.024) less critically. Regarding the PODCI, the Ch group scored higher in the Global Functioning Scale (p= 0.023), the Upper Extremity and Physical Function Scale (p= 0.000), the Transfer and Basic Mobility Scale (p= 0.088), the Pain/Comfort Scale (p= 0.009) and the Happiness Scale (p= 0.022). CONCLUSIONS This study shows that patients treated with the rigid brace assess their vitality, physical function, emotional and social functioning better and are less critical towards body curve, in comparison to patients treated with the SpineCor.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of group exercise with brace adjustment at shorter intervals than used in routine practice in late-onset idiopathic scoliosis patients. DESIGN This was a quasi-experimental study. Thirty patients with progressive scoliosis curves of 15-50 degrees and a prescription for a brace were divided into experimental and control groups, both of which participated in an 11-wk treatment program. Those in the experimental group underwent brace adjustment twice per week and performed group exercise, whereas those in the control group received a routine protocol. The quality of life and Cobb angle of patients in both groups were evaluated based on baseline and final results of the 22-item Scoliosis Research Society questionnaire and primary and secondary radiographs. RESULTS In the experimental group, the improvement in Cobb angle and patient satisfaction was greater than that in the control group (P < 0.05). Moreover, in patients with Cobb angles of less than 30 degrees, the self-image and satisfaction domains and the total scores of patients in the experimental group were significantly different from those in the control group at the final assessment (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Brace adjustment at shorter intervals combined with group exercise increases patient satisfaction and reduces scoliosis Cobb angles.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Whether brace-treated adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) have improved quality of life (QoL) is still unknown. Thus, we conducted a meta-analysis to compare the QoL of brace-treated AIS patients with untreated AIS patients. The pain, self-image/appearance, mental health, function/activity, satisfaction with management, total score without satisfaction, and total score of patients were used to measure the QoL after the intervention. METHODS Multiple electronic databases including PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase were searched for all years up to June 30, 2016. Articles in English that used the Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS-22) or a modified version of the SRS-22 questionnaire to evaluate the QoL differences between brace-treated AIS patients and untreated AIS patients were included in the meta-analysis. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used in the quality of literature evaluation. The pooled standardized mean difference (SMD) with its corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) for each parameter was computed. Egger test and Begg test were used to test for publication bias. RESULTS The SRS-22 or a modified SRS-22 questionnaire was used to evaluate the QoL after surgery. There was no significant difference in pain (SMD = 0.123, 95% CI: -0.101 to 0.347, P = .282), self-image/appearance (SMD = 0.108, 95% CI: -0.116 to 0.332, P = .334), mental health (SMD = 0.031, 95% CI: -0.130 to 0.201, P = .365), function/activity (SMD = 0.202, 95% CI: -0.022 to 0.425, P = .077), and total score without satisfaction (SMD = 0.123, 95% CI: -0.232 to 0.478, P = .497) between the untreated (observation) and brace-treated AIS patients, whereas a significant difference was observed in satisfaction with management (SMD = 0.393, 95% CI: 0.127-0.659, P = .004) and total score (SMD = 0.312, 95% CI: 0.054-0.571, P = .018) between the 2 groups. CONCLUSION Our meta-analysis indicated that brace-treated AIS patients had a higher QoL. However, further analysis could not be performed because of insufficient data, such that we were unable to make subgroup analysis of QoL for different types of AIS and the therapeutic methods chosen by brace-treated AIS patients.

Abstract
Abstract Introduction: Idiopathic Scoliosis (IS) is an idiopathic curvature of the spine in all three plans, been treated conservatively (non-invasive) or surgicaly (invasive). The effectiveness of noninvasive therapy still remains lacking in a scientific basis to support their evidence-based applicability. Objective: Evaluate the effects of non-invasive interventions in spine lateral inclination in IS through a systematic literature review. Methods: The search of studies in MEDLINE, SCOPUS and COCHRANE databases was performed on 24th March, 2014. The terms used were: Scoliosis, therapeutic exercise, physical therapy. Clinical trials with scoliotic patients undergoing some type of non-invasive intervention were included. The outcome was spine lateral inclination. Results: The research found 941 studies, seven of these were included after a screening performed by two independent reviewers. Six studies (85.7%) have adopted some sort of kinesiotherapeutic technic, and three studies (42.8%) used corrective orthosis. The average intervention time in kinesiotherapeutic technique studies was of 37.6 weeks and 91.6 weeks in the studies of corrective brace. The progression improvement of the spine lateral inclination was reported by 83.3% (5 of 6) of the kinesiotherapeutic technique studies and in 66.6% (2 of 3) of studies with corrective brace. Conclusion: An improvement was found, in general, in the progression of spine lateral inclination in IS subjects of both sexes from 11 to 25 years of age undergoing non-invasive interventions.
