Abstract
BACKGROUND We prospectively assessed the reproducibility of a novel low-dose single-volume dynamic computed tomography (CT) myocardial blood flow measurement technique. METHODS Thirty-four pairs of measurements were made under rest and stress conditions in 13 swine (54.3 ± 12.3 kg). One or two acquisition pairs were acquired in each animal with a 10-min delay between each pair. Contrast (370 mgI/mL; 0.5 mL/kg) and a diluted contrast/saline chaser (0.5 mL/kg; 30:70 contrast/saline) were injected peripherally at 5 mL/s, followed by bolus tracking and acquisition of a single volume scan (100 kVp; 200 mA) with a 320-slice CT scanner. Bolus tracking and single volume scan data were used to derive perfusion in mL/min/g using a first-pass analysis model; the coronary perfusion territories of the left anterior descending (LAD), left circumflex (LCx), and right coronary artery (RCA) were automatically assigned using a previously validated minimum-cost path technique. The reproducibility of CT myocardial perfusion measurement within the LAD, LCx, RCA, and the whole myocardium was assessed via regression analysis. The average CT dose index (CTDI) of perfusion measurement was recorded. RESULTS The repeated first (Pmyo1) and second (Pmyo2) single-volume CT perfusion measurements were related by Pmyo2 = 1.01Pmyo1 - 0.03(ρ = 0.96; RMSE = 0.08 mL/min/g; RMSE = 0.07 mL/min/g) for the whole myocardium, and by Preg2 = 0.86Preg1 + 0.13(ρ = 0.87; RMSE = 0.31 mL/min/g; RMSE = 0.29 mL/min/g) for the LAD, LCx, and RCA perfusion territories. The average CTDI of the single-volume CT perfusion measurement was 10.5 mGy. CONCLUSION The single-volume CT blood flow measurement technique provides reproducible low-dose myocardial perfusion measurement using only bolus tracking data and a single whole-heart volume scan. RELEVANCE STATEMENT The single-volume CT blood flow measurement technique is a noninvasive tool that reproducibly measures myocardial perfusion and provides coronary CT angiograms, allowing for simultaneous anatomic-physiologic assessment of myocardial ischemia. KEY POINTS A low-dose single-volume dynamic CT myocardial blood flow measurement technique is reproducible. Motion misregistration artifacts are eliminated using a single-volume CT perfusion technique. This technique enables combined anatomic-physiologic assessment of coronary artery disease.

Abstract
Background Coronary in-stent restenosis (ISR) is a major clinical challenge of contemporary percutaneous revascularization and portends adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Objectives We aimed to evaluate gender, race, and ethnicity related outcomes in acute coronary syndromes (ACS) with ISR. Methods Primary hospitalizations for ACS and ISR in the National Inpatient Sample database from 2016 to 2019 were included. Patients were stratified by gender, race, and ethnicity. The primary end points were all cause in-hospital mortality and coronary revascularization defined as composite of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), balloon angioplasty and/or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Results During the study period, a nationally weighted total of 97,680 patients with ACS and ISR were included. There was substantial variation in comorbidities, with greatest burden among Black and Hispanic women. All-cause in-hospital mortality was 2.4 % in the study cohort, but significantly higher in women (2.1 % vs. 2.1 %; aOR: 1.282, 95 % CI: 1.174-1.4; p < 0.001) and revascularization rates were significantly lower in women (77 % vs 80.2 %; aOR: 0.891, 95 % CI: 0.862-0.921; p < 0.001). Compared to White men, all women except Hispanic women, had significantly higher likelihood of in-hospital mortality, while White women, Black men and women, and Hispanic men had lower odds of revascularization. Conclusions There are significant gender, racial, and ethnic related differences in revascularization practices and clinical outcomes in patients with ACS and ISR with an adverse impact on women, racial and ethnic minorities in the U.S.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Drinking patterns among young adult men and women in the United States have been understudied, especially among racial and ethnic groups such as Asian Americans and Hispanics. Because alcohol-related racial and ethnic health disparities persist or increase in midlife, identifying peak ages of hazardous drinking could help to reduce disparities. METHODS We used the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health to examine: (1) past 12-month heavy episodic drinking (HED) and total alcohol volume consumption among non-Hispanic White (NHW), Black, Hispanic, and Asian men and women from ages 12 through 41, and (2) age-varying associations of race and ethnicity with drinking. Hispanic and Asian ethnic groups were disaggregated by historical drinking patterns. Time-varying effect models accounted for major demographic confounders. RESULTS NHW men and women experienced elevated drinking rates in their early 20s, with a second elevation in their 30s. Black men and women did not have elevated drinking until their 30s. Among Hispanic men and women, peak drinking periods varied by gender and subgroup drinking pattern. Peak HED and total consumption emerged in the early 30s for Asian men, while peak HED occurred in the early 20s for Asian women. Drinking at certain ages for some racial and ethnic minoritized men and women did not differ from that in their NHW counterparts. CONCLUSIONS Age periods during which subgroups in the U.S. population experience elevated alcohol consumption vary by ethnicity and gender. Recognition of these group differences could enhance our understanding of intervention timing.

Abstract
Importance Hypertension remains a leading factor associated with cardiovascular disease, and demographic and socioeconomic disparities in blood pressure (BP) control persist. While advances in digital health technologies have increased individuals' access to care for hypertension, few studies have analyzed the use of digital health interventions in vulnerable populations. Objective To assess the association between digital health interventions and changes in BP and to characterize tailored strategies for populations experiencing health disparities. Data Sources In this systematic review and meta-analysis, a systematic search identified studies evaluating digital health interventions for BP management in the Cochrane Library, Ovid Embase, Google Scholar, Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases from inception until October 30, 2023. Study Selection Included studies were randomized clinical trials or cohort studies that investigated digital health interventions for managing hypertension in adults; presented change in systolic BP (SBP) or baseline and follow-up SBP levels; and emphasized social determinants of health and/or health disparities, including a focus on marginalized populations that have historically been underserved or digital health interventions that were culturally or linguistically tailored to a population with health disparities. The study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guideline. Data Extraction and Synthesis Two reviewers extracted and verified data. Mean differences in BP between treatment and control groups were analyzed using a random-effects model. Main Outcomes and Measures Primary outcomes included mean differences (95% CIs) in SBP and diastolic BP (DBP) from baseline to 6 and 12 months of follow-up between digital health intervention and control groups. Shorter- and longer-term follow-up durations were also assessed, and sensitivity analyses accounted for baseline BP levels. Results A total of 28 studies (representing 8257 participants) were included (overall mean participant age, 57.4 years [range, 46-71 years]; 4962 [60.1%], female). Most studies examined multicomponent digital health interventions incorporating remote BP monitoring (18 [64.3%]), community health workers or skilled nurses (13 [46.4%]), and/or cultural tailoring (21 [75.0%]). Sociodemographic characteristics were similar between intervention and control groups. Between the intervention and control groups, there were statistically significant mean differences in SBP at 6 months (-4.24 mm Hg; 95% CI, -7.33 to -1.14 mm Hg; P = .01) and SBP changes at 12 months (-4.30 mm Hg; 95% CI, -8.38 to -0.23 mm Hg; P = .04). Few studies (4 [14.3%]) reported BP changes and hypertension control beyond 1 year. Conclusions and Relevance In this systematic review and meta-analysis of digital health interventions for hypertension management in populations experiencing health disparities, BP reductions were greater in the intervention groups compared with the standard care groups. The findings suggest that tailored initiatives that leverage digital health may have the potential to advance equity in hypertension outcomes.

Abstract
There has been little progress in reducing health care disparities since the 2003 landmark Institute of Medicine's report Unequal Treatment. Despite the higher burden of cardiovascular disease in underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, they have less access to cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons, and have higher rates of morbidity and mortality with cardiac surgical interventions. This review summarizes existing literature and highlights disparities in cardiovascular perioperative health care. We propose actionable solutions utilizing multidisciplinary perspectives from cardiology, cardiac surgery, cardiothoracic anesthesiology, critical care, medical ethics, and health disparity experts. Applying a health equity lens to multipronged interventions is necessary to eliminate the disparities in perioperative health care among patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Abstract
Despite the significant body of research on social determinants of health (SDH) and mortality, limited knowledge is available on the epidemiology of aggregated Latino health overall, and by women and subgroups. In population health studies, U.S. Latinos often are considered a monolithic population and presented as an aggregate, obscuring the diversity and variations within and across Latino subgroups, contributing to missed opportunities to identify SDH of health outcomes, and limiting the understanding of health differences. Given diverse environmental, racial, class, and geographic factors, a specific focus on women facilitates a more in-depth view of health disparities. This paper provides a scoping review of current gaps in research that assesses the relationships between SDH and mortality rates for the five leading causes of chronic-disease related deaths among Latinas by ethnic origin, place, race, and SES. We analyzed 2020 national mortality statistics from the CDC WONDER Online database jointly with reviews of empirical articles on Latina health, employing the EBSCOhost MEDLINE databases. These findings challenge the phenomenon of the Hispanic paradox that identified Latinos as a relatively healthy population compared to non-Hispanic White populations despite their lower economic status. The findings confirm that prior research on Latino women had methodological limitations due to the exclusion of SDH and an overemphasis on culturalist perspectives, while overlooking the critical role of socioeconomic impacts on health. Findings indicate major knowledge gaps in Latina mortality by SDH and subgroups that may undermine surveillance efforts and treatment efficacy. We offer forward-looking recommendations to assure the inclusion of key SDH associated with Latina mortality by subgroup as essential to inform future studies, intervention programs, and health policy.

Abstract
The relative distribution of proportions of cardiovascular health (CVH) categories within racial groups has been examined. However, little scientific evidence exists on the gap trend in racial/ethnic disparities in mean CVH score among non-Hispanic (NH) Whites and Blacks. This study examined the trend(s) in the gap(s) in predicted CVH scores between NH Whites and Blacks over 10 years. In a cross-sectional analytical study, 10 years of Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data from 2008 to 2018 were pooled, utilizing multivariate Poisson's regression of CVH metrics on race, while controlling for relevant covariates. The interactions of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) with CVH metrics, and other key variables such as trends and grouped Charlson Comorbidity Index allowed for variations in the effect of these variables on the subgroups. The mean gap in CVH scores was on average 0.15 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.137 to 0.170], with Blacks consistently having reduced odds of having ideal CVH until 2014. The overall impact of having an ACS decreased acquired CVH scores by 24.1% [95% CI -0.275 to 0.207], and was equal for both racial subgroups (P < 0.05). The Affordable Care Act (ACA)-trend was positive, increasing the likelihood of improved CVH in the sample (P < 0.05), deflecting a downward trend in acquired CVH scores for both races, as the gap narrowed into more recent years. The CVH gap was stabilized by the ACA, but never really converged, suggesting that efforts to reduce existing disparities between Blacks and NH Whites in the United States would require government policies to look beyond mere "access" and/or "affordability" to health care.

Abstract
Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a major air pollutant in most cities of China, and poses great health risks to local residents. In this study, the health effects of PM2.5 in Nanjing and Yangzhou were compared using computational and experimental methods. The global exposure mortality model (GEMM), including the results of a cohort study in China, was used to estimate the disease-related risks. Premature mortality attributable to PM2.5 exposure were markedly higher in Nanjing than that in Yangzhou at comparable levels of PM2.5 (8191 95% CI, 6975-9994 vs. 6548 95% CI, 5599-8049 in 2015). However, the baseline mortality rate was on a country-level and the age distribution was on a province-level, traditional estimation method could not accurately represent the health burdens of PM2.5 on a city-level. We proposed a refined calculation method which based on the actual deaths of each city and the disease death rates. Conversely, similar concentrations of PM2.5 exposure resulted in higher actual deaths per million population in Yangzhou (1466 95% CI, 1266-1746) than that in Nanjing (1271 95% CI, 1098-1514). Health risks of PM2.5 are associated with the generation of reactive oxygen species, among which hydroxyl radial (·OH) is the most reactive one. We then collected these PM2.5 samples and quantified the induced ·OH. Consistently, average ·OH concentration in 2015 was higher in Yangzhou than that in Nanjing, again indicating that PM2.5 in Yangzhou was more toxic. The combination of computational and experimental methods demonstrated the complex relationship between health risks and PM2.5 concentrations. The refined estimation method could help us better estimate and interpret the risks caused by PM2.5 exposure on a city-level.

Abstract
Black Americans have lower rates of depression and anxiety than Whites, despite greater exposure to stressors known to negatively impact mental health, characterized as the Black-White mental health paradox. This study revisited the paradox during the coronavirus pandemic. Drawing on stress process theory, minority stress theory, and the rejection-identification model of discrimination, in-group identity, and well-being, we analyzed original survey data from a quota sample of African American and White adults (N = 594). The survey included a range of stressors and coping resources, including those relevant to the pandemic (e.g., COVID-19 illness) and race (e.g., witnessing anti-Black police violence). Results indicate that despite African Americans' greater exposure and vulnerability to racial discrimination, the Black-White mental health paradox holds, owing in part to protective effects of African American's higher self-esteem. Directions for future exploration of the paradox are presented based on this study's findings.

Abstract
Myocarditis is a potentially fatal complication of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus. COVID-19 myocarditis appears to have distinct inflammatory characteristics that distinguish it from other viral etiologies. COVID-19 myocarditis can present with symptoms ranging from dyspnea and chest pain to acute heart failure and death. It is critical to detect any cases of myocarditis, especially fulminant myocarditis, which can be characterized by signs of heart failure and arrhythmias. Serial troponins, echocardiography, and electrocardiograms should be performed as part of the initial workup for suspected myocarditis. The second step in detecting myocarditis is cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and endomyocardial biopsy. Treatment for COVID-19 myocarditis is still debatable; however, combining intravenous immunoglobulins and corticosteroids may be effective, especially in cases of fulminant myocarditis. Overall, more research is needed to determine the incidence of COVID-19 myocarditis , and the use of intravenous immunoglobulins and corticosteroids in combination requires large randomized controlled trials to determine efficacy. The purpose of this review is to summarize current evidence on the subject. This review aims to summarise current evidence on this topic.

Abstract
Compartmentalization, leveraging microfluidics, enables highly sensitive assays, but the requirement for significant infrastructure for their design, build, and operation limits access. Multimaterial particle-based technologies thermodynamically stabilize monodisperse droplets as individual reaction compartments with simple liquid handling steps, precluding the need for expensive microfluidic equipment. Here, we further improve the accessibility of this lab on a particle technology to resource-limited settings by combining this assay system with a portable multimodal reader, thus enabling nanoliter droplet assays in an accessible platform. We show the utility of this platform in measuring N-terminal propeptide B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), a heart failure biomarker, in complex medium and patient samples. We report a limit of detection of ∼0.05 ng/mL and a linear response between 0.2 and 2 ng/mL in spiked plasma samples. We also show that, owing to the plurality of measurements per sample, "swarm" sensing acquires better statistical quantitation with a portable reader. Monte Carlo simulations show the increasing capability of this platform to differentiate between negative and positive samples, i.e., below or above the clinical cutoff for acute heart failure (∼0.1 ng/mL), as a function of the number of particles measured. Our platform measurements correlate with gold standard ELISA measurement in cardiac patient samples, and achieve lower variation in measurement across samples compared to the standard well plate-based ELISA. Thus, we show the capabilities of a cost-effective droplet-reader system in accurately measuring biomarkers in nanoliter droplets for diseases that disproportionately affect underserved communities in resource-limited settings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among US women. Minority women have higher rates of CHD and are more likely to experience adverse outcomes. Because of racial disparities in CHD outcomes, the purpose of this study was to assess CHD knowledge and awareness in African American and Hispanic women. METHODS Using a survey research design, a convenience sample of African American and Hispanic women was surveyed in their local communities. CHD knowledge, awareness, and demographic data were collected using an online survey. The survey was administered in English and Spanish using an iPad. CHD knowledge was assessed using a 7-item survey based on the American Heart Association's Life's Simple 7 brochure. CHD awareness was assessed using a 7-item survey adapted from the American Heart Association's Survey of Women's Cardiovascular Disease Awareness. CHD knowledge was scored on a scale of 0 to 7, and awareness was assessed based on responses to each question. The data analysis consisted of cross-tabulations and multivariable repeated measures analysis. We assessed differences in CHD knowledge and awareness based on race/ethnicity. We hypothesized that there would be statistically significant differences in CHD knowledge and awareness based on specific demographic factors (eg, age, income, education, health literacy). RESULTS A total of 100 African American (n=50) and Hispanic (n = 50) women participated in the study. Results revealed that CHD knowledge and awareness were limited for both groups. Seventy-three percent of participants (African American 66%; Hispanic 80%) did not know that CHD is the leading cause of death in women and 75% (African American 60%; Hispanic 90%) were moderately or not at all informed about CHD. CONCLUSIONS These findings support the need for more research on innovative strategies to improve CHD knowledge and awareness, particularly in African American and Hispanic women who are at highest risk, thereby addressing racial/ethnic and gender disparities in CHD morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A third of the patients admitted with Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) have ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Previous studies showed that females with STEMI have higher mortality than men. HYPOTHESIS There exist significant disparities in outcomes among women of different races presenting with STEMI. METHODS National inpatient sample (NIS) data was obtained from January 2016 to December 2018 for the hospitalization of female patients with STEMI. We compared outcomes, using an extensive multivariate regression analysis amongst women from different races. Our primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. Secondary outcomes were revascularization use, procedure complications, and healthcare utilization. RESULTS Of 202 223 female patients with STEMI; 11.3% were African American, 7.4% Hispanic, 2.4% Asian, and 4.3% another race. In-hospital mortality was higher in non-Caucasian groups. African American (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.2; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.07-1.30; p < .01) and another race (aOR 1.37; 95% CI: 1.15-1.63; p < .01) had higher odds of mortality when compared with white women. African American (aOR 0.69; 95% CI: 0.62-0.72; p < .01), Hispanics (aOR 0.81; 95% CI: 0.74-0.88; p < .01), and Asian (aOR 0.79; 95% CI: 0.69-0.90; p < .01) had lower odds of percutaneous intervention (PCI) when compared with whites. African Americans had fewer odds of Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) and use of Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) during the index admission. Non-Caucasians had more comorbidities, complications, and healthcare utilization costs. CONCLUSION There are significant racial disparities in clinical outcomes and revascularization in female patients with STEMI. African American women have a higher likelihood of mortality among the different races. Females from minority groups are also less likely to undergo PCI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As the population ages, chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) multimorbidity has emerged as a major public health issue globally. This study examines ethnic disparities in prevalence of NCDs and its multimorbidity among rural southwest Chinese older adults. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted in rural southwest population aged ≥ 60 years consisting of 5,642 consenting participants of Han and three ethnic minority groups (Dai, Ha Ni, and Bai). Information about participants' demographic characteristics and lifestyle behaviors was obtained using a standard questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements including height, weight, and waist circumference, fasting blood sugar and blood pressure measurement, as well as post-bronchodilator spirometry test were recorded for each participant. RESULTS The age-standardized prevalence of five common chronic NCDs- hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) - and its multimorbidity was 72.8%, 15.9%, 4.0%, 10.0%, 9.8%, and 27.6%, respectively. Bai participants had both the highest overall and sex-specific prevalence rates of hypertension, diabetes, stroke, and COPD, whereas Han participants had the highest rates of CHD (P < 0.01). The results of multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that female and older participants had a higher probability of chronic NCDs multimorbidity than their counterparts (P < 0.01). Bai ethnic minority participants were more likely to have NCDs multimorbidity while Ha Ni and Dai ethnic minority participants were less likely to have NCD multimorbidity relative to the Han participants (P < 0.05). Older adults with a higher level of education and family history of chronic NCDs, and who were also current smokers, current drinkers, obese, centrally obese, and physically inactive had a greater probability of developing chronic NCDs multimorbidity (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Ethnicity and individual demographic and lifestyle factors significantly impact prevalence of chronic NCDs multimorbidity. Future chronic NCDs prevention and control strategies must be tailored to address ethnicity, and culturally tailored lifestyle interventions may reduce the prevalence of chronic NCDs multimorbidity in rural southwest China.

Abstract
NEW FINDINGS What is the central question of this study? Does cutaneous sensory nerve-mediated vasodilatation differ between non-Hispanic Black and White young adults? What is the main finding and its importance? The magnitude of cutaneous reactive hyperaemia is lower in non-Hispanic Black relative to non-Hispanic White young adults, but the overall sensory nerve contribution is the same, suggesting that sensory nerve function is similar in both non-Hispanic Black and White young adults. ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to assess cutaneous sensory nerve function, independent of nitric oxide, in non-Hispanic Black and White young adults. We tested the hypothesis that cutaneous reactive hyperaemia and sensory nerve-mediated vasodilatation would be lower in non-Hispanic Black young adults relative to non-Hispanic White young adults. Twenty-four participants who self-identified as non-Hispanic Black (n = 12) or non-Hispanic White (n = 12) were recruited. All participants underwent three bouts of reactive hyperaemia. An index of skin blood flow was measured continuously using laser-Doppler flowmetry at a control site and at a site treated with topical 4% lignocaine to inhibit sensory nerve function. Peak reactive hyperaemia was lower in non-Hispanic Black relative to non-Hispanic White participants (P < 0.001). Total reactive hyperaemia was lower in non-Hispanic Black [mean (SD); control, 4085 (955)%CVCmax s; lignocaine, 2127 (639) percent maximal cutaneous vascular conductance * seconds, %CVCmax s] relative to non-Hispanic White [control: 6820 (1179)%CVCmax s; lignocaine, 3573 (712)%CVCmax s] participants (P < 0.001 for both sites). There was no difference between groups for the calculated contribution of sensory nerves to either the peak [non-Hispanic Black, 25 (14)%; non-Hispanic White, 19 (13)%] or total reactive hyperaemic response [non-Hispanic Black, 48 (10)%; non-Hispanic White, 47 (10)%]. These data suggest that cutaneous reactive hyperaemia is lower in non-Hispanic Black young adults, but the sensory nerve contribution is similar in non-Hispanic Black and White young adults.

Abstract
Background The Latino population is a growing and diverse share of the US population. Previous studies have examined Latino immigrants as a homogenous group. The authors hypothesized that there would be heterogeneity in cardiovascular disease risk factors among Latino immigrant subgroups (from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Central America, or South America) compared with non-Latino White adults. Methods and Results A cross-sectional analysis of the 2010 to 2018 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) among 548 739 individuals was performed. Generalized linear models with Poisson distribution were fitted to compare the prevalence of self-reported hypertension, overweight/obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, physical inactivity, and current smoking, adjusting for known confounders. The authors included 474 968 non-Latino White adults and 73 771 Latino immigrants from Mexico (59%), Puerto Rico (7%), Cuba (6%), Dominican Republic (5%), Central America (15%), and South America (9%). Compared with White adults, Mexican immigrants had the highest prevalence of overweight/obesity (prevalence ratio [PR], 1.17 [95% CI, 1.15-1.19]); Puerto Rican individuals had the highest prevalence of diabetes (PR, 1.63 [95% CI, 1.45-1.83]); individuals from Central America had the highest prevalence of high cholesterol (PR, 1.16 [95% CI, 1.04-1.28]); and individuals from the Dominican Republic had the highest prevalence of physical inactivity (PR, 1.25 [95% CI, 1.18-1.32]). All Latino immigrant subgroups were less likely to be smokers than White adults. Conclusions The authors observed advantages and disparities in cardiovascular disease risk factors among Latino immigrants. Aggregating data on Latino individuals may mask differences in cardiovascular disease risk and hinder efforts to reduce health disparities in this population. Study findings provide Latino group-specific actionable information and targets for improving cardiovascular health.

Abstract
Androgen deprivation therapy is the cornerstone of prostate cancer therapy. Recent studies have revealed an association between androgen deprivation therapy and cardiovascular adverse effects such as myocardial infarction and stroke. This review summarizes the available research on the cardiovascular risk of men using androgen deprivation therapy. We also discuss racial disparities surrounding both prostate cancer and cardiovascular disease, emphasizing the importance of biological/molecular and socioeconomic factors in assessing baseline risk in patients beginning androgen ablation. Based on the literature, we provide recommendations for monitoring patients who are at high risk for a cardiovascular adverse event while being treated on androgen deprivation therapy. This review aims to present the current research on androgen deprivation therapy and cardiovascular toxicity with an emphasis on racial disparities and provides a framework for clinicians to decrease the cardiovascular morbidity in men that are being treated with hormone therapy.

Abstract
Exclusion of racialized minorities in neuroscience directly harms communities and potentially leads to biased prevention and intervention approaches. As magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and other neuroscientific techniques offer progressive insights into the neurobiological underpinnings of mental health research agendas, it is incumbent on us as researchers to pay careful attention to issues of diversity and representation as they apply in neuroscience research. Discussions around these issues are based largely on scholarly expert opinion without actually involving the community under study. In contrast, community-engaged approaches, specifically Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR), actively involve the population of interest in the research process and require collaboration and trust between community partners and researchers. This paper outlines a community-engaged neuroscience approach for the development of our developmental neuroscience study on mental health outcomes in preadolescent Latina youth. We focus on "positionality" (the multiple social positions researchers and the community members hold) and "reflexivity" (the ways these positions affect the research process) as conceptual tools from social sciences and humanities. We propose that integrating two unique tools: a positionality map and Community Advisory Board (CAB) into a CBPR framework can counter the biases in human neuroscience research by making often invisible-or taken-for-granted power dynamics visible and bolstering equitable participation of diverse communities in scientific research. We discuss the benefits and challenges of incorporating a CBPR method in neuroscience research with an illustrative example of a CAB from our lab, and highlight key generalizable considerations in research design, implementation, and dissemination that we hope are useful for scholars wishing to take similar approaches.

Abstract
Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1-RAs) reduce cardiovascular events and mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We sought to describe trends in prescribing for SGLT2is and GLP1-RAs in diverse care settings, including (1) the outpatient clinics of a midwestern integrated health system and (2) small- and medium-sized community-based primary care practices and health centers in 3 midwestern states. We included adults with T2DM and ≥1 outpatient clinic visit. The outcomes of interest were annual active prescription rates for SGLT2is and GLP1-RAs (separately). In the integrated health system, 22,672 patients met the case definition of T2DM. From 2013 to 2019, the overall prescription rate for SGLT2is increased from 1% to 15% (absolute difference [AD] 14%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 13% to 15%, p <0.01). The GLP1-RA prescription rate was stable at 10% (AD 0%, 95% CI -1% to 1%, p = 0.9). In community-based primary care practices, 43,340 patients met the case definition of T2DM. From 2013 to 2017, the SGLT2i prescription rate increased from 3% to 7% (AD 4%, 95% CI 3% to 6%, p <0.01), whereas the GLP1-RA prescription rate was stable at 2% to 3% (AD 1%, 95% CI -1 to 1%, p = 0.40). In a fully adjusted regression model, non-Hispanic Black patients had lower odds of SGLT2i or GLP1-RA prescription (odds ratio 0.56, 95% CI 0.34 to 0.89, p = 0.016). In conclusion, the increase in prescription rates was greater for SGLT2is than for GLP1-RAs in patients with T2DM in a large integrated medical center and community primary care practices. Overall, prescription rates for eligible patients were low, and racial disparities were observed.

Abstract
Although life saving, health inequities exist regarding access and patient outcomes in Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), especially among marginalized groups. This scoping review's goal is to outline existing literature and highlight gaps for future research. Researchers followed guidance from the Joanna Briggs Institute and PRISMA extension for scoping reviews. We conducted a search to identify articles published between 2016 and 2022 regarding CABG and inequity groups, defined by the National Institutes of Health. Fifty-seven articles were included in our final sample. Race/Ethnicity was examined in 39 incidences, Sex or Gender 29 times, Income 17 instances, Geography 10 instances, and Education Level 3 instances. Occupation Status 2 instances, and LGBTQ+ 0 times. Important disparities exist regarding CABG access and outcomes, especially involving members of the LGBTQ+, Native American, and Black communities. Further research is needed to address health disparities and their root causes for focused action and improved health of minoritized groups.

Abstract
Black women are disproportionately affected by cardiovascular disease with an excess burden of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. In addition, the racialized structure of the United States shapes cardiovascular disease research and health care delivery for Black women. Given the indisputable evidence of the disparities in health care delivery, research, and cardiovascular outcomes, there is an urgent need to develop and implement effective and sustainable solutions to advance cardiovascular health equity for Black women while considering their ethnic diversity, regions of origin, and acculturation. Innovative and culturally tailored strategies that consider the differential impact of social determinants of health and the unique challenges that shape their health-seeking behaviors should be implemented. A patient-centered framework that involves collaboration among clinicians, health care systems, professional societies, and government agencies is required to improve cardiovascular outcomes for Black women. The time is "now" to achieve health equity for all Black women.

Abstract
As global quality of life has improved, the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases have gradually increased in prevalence. People have consequently sought to improve their health through physical exercise. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a cardiac rehabilitation (CR) tool that has been of great interest for several years. However, its feasibility and safety remain controversial. This study aimed to explore hot research topics and new directions regarding the role of HIIT in CR and to describe the dynamic development of the field. We used the Web of Science Core Collection database to develop visualizations using CiteSpace software (v.6.1.R2). The number of articles published, institutional collaboration networks, author partnerships, and keyword co-occurrence and clustering were used to analyze the impact of HIIT on CR. Our results showed that Norway, Canada, and the United States were the most prominent contributors to this field. Articles by Nigam, A and Juneau, M had the highest number of citations. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology had performed the most in-depth research in this area. The European Journal of Preventive Cardiology had published the most articles. The United States had the highest number of publishing journals. Relevant issues focused on coronary artery disease, exercise capacity, heart failure, cardiorespiratory fitness, and physical activity. HIIT in heart transplantation may be at the forefront of research in this field and future studies should focus on this topic. HIIT-based CR can therefore improve the exercise capacity and quality of life of cardiovascular patients and improve patient compliance in a safe manner.

Abstract
Background Differences in prevalence of risk factors such as hypertension may explain heterogeneity in cardiovascular risk across Asian American populations. Methods We used National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data from 2006 to 2018 among White, Chinese, Asian Indian, Filipino, and 'other Asians' (Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese). Unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios (aOR) with 95% confidence intervals were reported using logistic regression models for the association between race and self-reported premature hypertension (age <50 years old). Models were adjusted for sex, education, body mass index, smoking status, diabetes, and coronary heart disease. Results We studied 99,864 participants with history of hypertension (mean age, 59.3 ± 0.1; 50% women, 90% US born). Asian Indians had higher prevalence of premature hypertension (37%) compared with Filipinos (27%), 'other Asians' (26%), Whites (25%), and Chinese (21%). Compared with Whites, Chinese individuals had lower odds of premature hypertension (aOR = 0.79, 0.63-0.98), but Asian Indians had higher odds (aOR = 1.85, 1.48-2.31). Compared with Chinese, odds of premature hypertension was higher for Asian Indians (aOR = 2.39, 1.74-3.27), Filipinos (aOR = 1.53, 1.16-2.04), and 'other Asians' (OR = 1.32, 1.03-1.70; aOR = 1.59, 1.20-2.10). Overall prevalence of hypertension was lower among Asian Indians (aOR = 0.52, 0.46-0.58) and 'other Asians' (aOR = 0.74, 0.68-0.79) compared with Whites. Conclusions There is heterogeneity in the risk of hypertension across Asian Americans by age. Asian Indians and 'other Asians' had higher prevalence of premature hypertension and lower prevalence of overall hypertension, which may call for earlier screening for risk factors among these populations.

Abstract
Importance High lipid concentrations are a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Little is known about how population-level lipid concentrations, as well as trends in lipid control, have changed over the past decade among US adults. Objective To determine whether lipid concentrations and rates of lipid control changed among US adults and whether these trends differed by sex and race and ethnicity, from 2007 to 2018. Design, Setting, and Participants Serial cross-sectional analysis of 33 040 US adults aged 20 years or older, weighted to be nationally representative, from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (2007-2008 to 2017-2018). Main Outcomes and Measures Lipid concentrations among US adults and rates of lipid control among adults receiving statin therapy. Lipid control was defined as a total cholesterol concentration of 200 mg/dL or less. Results The mean age of the study population was 47.4 years, and 51.4% were women; of the 33 040 participants, 12.0% were non-Hispanic Black; 10.3%, Mexican American; 6.4%, other Hispanic American; 62.7%, non-Hispanic White; and 8.5%, other race and ethnicities (including non-Hispanic Asian. Among all US adults, age-adjusted total cholesterol improved significantly in the overall population from 197 mg/dL in 2007-2008 to 189 mg/dL in 2017-2018 (difference, -8.6 mg/dL [95% CI, -12.2 to -4.9 mg/dL]; P for trend <.001), with similar patterns for men and women. Black, Mexican American, other Hispanic, and White adults experienced significant improvements in total cholesterol, but no significant change was observed for Asian adults. Among adults receiving statin therapy, age-adjusted lipid control rates did not significantly change from 78.5% in 2007-2008 to 79.5% in 2017-2018 (difference, 1.1% [95% CI, -3.7% to 5.8%]; P for trend = .27), and these patterns were similar for men and women. Across all racial and ethnic groups, only Mexican Americans experienced a significant improvement in age-adjusted lipid control (P for trend = .008). In 2015-2018, age-adjusted rates of lipid control were significantly lower for women than for men (OR, 0.54 [95% CI, 0.40 to 0.72]). In addition, when compared with White adults, rates of lipid control while taking statins were significantly lower among Black adults (OR, 0.66 [95% CI, 0.47 to 0.94]) and other Hispanic adults (OR, 0.59 [95% CI, 0.37 to 0.95]); no significant differences were observed for other racial and ethnic groups. Conclusions and Relevance In this serial cross-sectional study, lipid concentrations improved in the US adult population from 2007-2008 through 2017-2018. These patterns were observed across all racial and ethnic subgroups, with the exception of non-Hispanic Asian adults.

Abstract
The superiority of drug-eluting stents (DES) compared with bare-metal stents (BMS) is well-established, but data regarding DES use in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) as a function of race is limited. Our goal was to examine stent utilization patterns and disparities based on race, sex, and insurance status in patients with STEMI undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention. The National Inpatient Sample database was used to retrospectively compare DES vs BMS use in patients admitted with STEMI from 2009 to 2018. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to assess the independent predictors of DES use. DES utilization increased significantly from 62.8% in 2009 to 94.0% in 2018. However, African Americans were less likely to receive a DES (odds ratio [OR] .82, 95% confidence interval [CI] .77-.87) compared with Caucasians. Women were more likely to undergo DES implantation (OR 1.07, 95% CI 1.05-1.10). Patients insured by Medicaid (OR .84, 95% CI .80-.89) and those classified as Self-pay (OR .63, 95% CI .61-.66) were less likely to undergo DES implantation compared to those with private insurance (OR 1.33, 95% CI 1.29-1.38). Disparities based on race and insurance status continue to persist despite a significant increase in DES utilization in STEMI patients across the identified subgroups.

Abstract
Background Social and environmental factors play an important role in the rising health care burden of cardiovascular disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) from US census data as a tool for public health officials to identify communities in need of support in the setting of a hazardous event. SVI (ranging from a least vulnerable score of 0 to a most vulnerable score of 1) ranks communities on 15 social factors including unemployment, minoritized groups status, and disability, and groups them under 4 broad themes: socioeconomic status, housing and transportation, minoritized groups, and household composition. We sought to assess the association of SVI with self‐reported prevalent cardiovascular comorbidities and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Methods and Results We performed a retrospective cohort analysis of adults (≥18 years) in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System 2016 to 2019. Data regarding self‐reported prevalent cardiovascular comorbidities (including diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smoking, substance use), and ASCVD was captured using participants' response to a structured telephonic interview. We divided states on the basis of the tertile of SVI (first—participant lives in the least vulnerable group of states, 0–0.32; to third—participant lives in the most vulnerable group of states, 0.54–1.0). Multivariable logistic regression models adjusting for age, race and ethnicity, sex, employment, income, health care coverage, and association with federal poverty line were constructed to assess the association of SVI with cardiovascular comorbidities. Our study sample consisted of 1 745 999 participants ≥18 years of age. States in the highest (third) tertile of social vulnerability had predominantly Black and Hispanic adults, lower levels of education, lower income, higher rates of unemployment, and higher rates of prevalent comorbidities including hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, hyperlipidemia, substance use, and ASCVD. In multivariable logistic regression models, individuals living in states in the third tertile of SVI had higher odds of having hypertension (odds ratio (OR), 1.14 [95% CI, 1.11–1.17]), diabetes (OR, 1.12 [95% CI, 1.09–1.15]), hyperlipidemia (OR, 1.09 [95% CI, 1.06–1.12]), chronic kidney disease (OR, 1.17 [95% CI, 1.12–1.23]), smoking (OR, 1.05 [95% CI, 1.03–1.07]), and ASCVD (OR, 1.15 [95% CI, 1.12–1.19]), compared with those living in the first tertile of SVI. Conclusions SVI varies across the US states and is associated with prevalent cardiovascular comorbidities and ASCVD, independent of age, race and ethnicity, sex, employment, income, and health care coverage. SVI may be a useful assessment tool for health policy makers and health systems researchers examining multilevel influences on cardiovascular‐related health behaviors and identifying communities for targeted interventions pertaining to social determinants of health.

Abstract
Background Race and ethnicity are major considerations in the incidence, management, and long-term outcome of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in the United States, but there is limited existing comparative data. Methods We assembled a registry in a health system serving Bronx, NY of STEMI patients from 2008-2014 and analyzed differences in presentation, treatment and mortality between Hispanic/Latino (H/L), non-Hispanic Black (NHB) and non-Hispanic White (NHW). Upon discharge post-treatment for STEMI, all patients were followed for a median of 4.4 years (interquartile range 2.5, 6.0). Out of 966 STEMI patients, mean age was 61 years, 46% were H/L and 65% were male. H/Ls and NHBs had a higher prevalence of hypertension and diabetes mellitus than their NHW counterparts, coinciding with a lower socioeconomic status (SES). Results The number of critically diseased vessels found at cardiac catheterization and mean troponin levels did not vary by race-ethnicity; neither did the adjusted hazard ratios (HR) for death. However, age-sex adjusted rates of general hospital readmission were higher in NHBs vs NHWs (HR 1.30, P=.03). Age-sex adjusted cardiovascular readmissions rates were higher in H/Ls than NHWs (HR 1.42, P=.03). Age-sex adjusted heart failure readmissions were increased for both H/Ls (HR 2.14, P=.01) and NHBs (HR 2.12, P=.02) over NHWs. Conclusions Among STEMI patients, a higher prevalence of modifiable cardiovascular risk factors and a lower SES was seen among NHBs and H/Ls compared to NHWs. Despite similar coronary disease severity and in-hospital death, NHBs and H/Ls had a greater risk of general, cardiovascular and heart failure readmissions post-STEMI compared to NHWs.

Abstract
Complex High-risk but indicated Percutaneous coronary interventions (CHiPs) is increasingly common in contemporary practice. However, data on ethnic differences in CHiP types, outcomes, and trends in patients with stable angina are limited; this is pertinent given the population of Black, Asian, and other ethnic minorities (BAME) in Europe is increasing. We conducted a retrospective analysis of CHiP procedures undertaken in patients with stable angina using data obtained from the BCIS (British Cardiovascular Intervention Society) registry (2006 to 2017). CHiP cases were identified and categorized by ethnicity into White and BAME groups. We then performed multivariable regression analysis and propensity score matching to determine adjusted odds ratios (aORs) of in-hospital mortality, major bleeding, and major adverse cardiovascular and cerebral events (MACCEs) in BAME compared with Whites. Of 424,290 procedure records, 105,949 were CHiP (25.0%) (White 89,038 [84%], BAME 16,911 [16%]). BAME patients were younger (median 68.1 vs 70.6 years). Previous coronary artery bypass surgery (33.4% vs 38.3%), followed by chronic total occlusion percutaneous coronary intervention (31.9% vs 32%) were common CHiP variables in both groups. The third common variable was age 80 years and above (23.6%) in White patients and severe vascular calcifications in BAME patients (18.8%). BAME patients had higher rates of diabetes (41.1 vs 23.6%), hypertension (68 vs 66.5%), previous percutaneous coronary intervention (43.7 vs 37.6%), and previous myocardial infarction (44.9 vs 42.5%), (p <0.001 for all). Mortality (aOR 1.1, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.8 to 1.5) and MACCE (aOR 1.0, 95% CI 0.8 to 1.1) odds were similar among the groups. Bleeding odds (aOR 0.7, 95% CI 0.6 to 0.9) were lower in BAME. In conclusion, CHiP procedures differed among the ethnic groups. BAME patients were younger and had worse cardiometabolic profiles. Similar odds of death and MACCE were seen in BAME compared with their White counterparts. Bleeding odds were 30% lower in the BAME group.

Abstract
PURPOSE Clinical trials determine safety and efficacy of cancer therapeutics and establish standards of care. Minority patient participation in cancer clinical trials is dismal. We aimed to determine the impact of eligibility criteria on disparities in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) clinical trial candidacy. METHODS Traditional PDAC trial eligibility criteria were obtained from ClinicalTrials.gov. Patients with PDAC who sought care at Virginia Commonwealth University Health from 2010 to 2019 were included. Clinical data were obtained from billing codes and discrete values in the electronic medical record. Eligibility criteria differences between racial groups were determined using chi-squared tests and unconditional maximum likelihood-based odds ratios. RESULTS Among 676 patients, most identified as Black or White race (42.5% and 51.6%, respectively). Using traditional criteria, Black patients were more likely to be ineligible for participation compared with White patients (42.4% v 33.2%, P = .023) secondary to hypoalbuminemia (14.1% v 7.9%, P = .023), HIV (3.1% v 0.3%, P = .010), hepatitis B (1.7% v 0%, P = .043), and hepatitis C (9.1% v 3.4%, P = .005). Black patients were also numerically more likely to be ineligible because of renal dysfunction, recent coronary stenting, and uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. Prior cancer treatment excluded fewer Black than White patients (9.1% v 14.0%, P = .072), most attributable to lower rates of neoadjuvant chemotherapy received. Strategic eligibility criteria revisions could equalize ineligibility rates between Black and White patients (26.8% v 24.8%, P = .581). CONCLUSION Traditional eligibility criteria differentially exclude Black patients from participating in PDAC clinical trials. These criteria perpetuate disparities, limit generalizability, and are often not medically justifiable. Revised criteria may improve participant diversity, without compromising safety or study results.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVE To test whether the differences across sex and race in the treatment of and outcomes for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) have changed over a recent decade. METHODS We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients with a diagnosis of STEMI or NSTEMI in California from 2005 to 2015 using the Office of State Health Planning and Development dataset. Using multivariable linear regression with county-fixed effects, we measured the baseline and change over time in the proportions of patients with STEMI or NSTEMI who underwent appropriately-timed coronary angiography (day of admission and within 3 days of admission, respectively) and survived at 1 year according to sex and race (Asian, Black, Hispanic, and White) and adjusting for comorbidities, payor, and hospital characteristics. RESULTS We analyzed 159,068 STEMI and 294,068 NSTEMI presentations. In 2005, 50.0% of 12,329 men and 35.7% of 6,939 women with STEMI and 45.0% of 14,379 men and 33.1% of 10,674 women with NSTEMI underwent timely angiography. In 2015, 76.7% of 6,257 men and 66.8% of 2,808 women with STEMI underwent timely angiography and 56.3% of 13,889 men and 45.9% of 9,334 women with NSTEMI underwent timely angiography. In 2005, 1-year survival was 82.3% for men and 69.6% for women after STEMI; in 2013, 1-year survival was 88.1% for men and 79.1% for women. In the multivariable model, the baseline difference was 1.1 percentage points (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.2 to 1.9), and survival increased for women compared with men by 0.3 percentage points per year (95% CI 0.2 to 0.5). In 2005, 46.0% (5,878) of 12,789 White patients and 31.2% (330) of 1,057 Black patients with STEMI underwent timely angiography; in 2015 75.2% of 3,928 White patients and 69.2% of 522 Black patients underwent timely angiography for STEMI. In the multivariable model, this difference was 6.4 percentage points at baseline (95% CI 4.5 to 8.3), and the probability of undergoing timely angiography for Black patients increased by 0.3 percentage points per year (95% CI -0.1 to 0.6). CONCLUSION Despite overall improvements in the treatment of and outcomes for STEMI and NSTEMI, disparities persist in the treatment of and outcomes for both the conditions, particularly for women.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Research and clinical services addressing psychosocial aspects of coronary heart disease (CHD) typically emphasize individuals, focusing less on the context of intimate relationships such as marriage and similar partnerships. This review describes current evidence regarding the role of intimate relationships in the development, course, and management of CHD. RECENT FINDINGS Having an intimate partner is associated with reduced risk of incident CHD and a better prognosis among patients, but strain (e.g., conflict) and disruption (i.e., separation, divorce) in these relationships are associated with increased risk and poor outcomes. These associations likely reflect mechanisms involving health behavior and the physiological effects of emotion and stress. Importantly, many other well-established psychosocial risk and protective factors (e.g., low SES, job stress, depression, and optimism) are strongly related to the quality of intimate relationships, and these associations likely contribute to the effects of those other psychosocial factors. For better or worse, intimate partners can also affect the outcome of efforts to alter health behaviors (physical activity, diet, smoking, and medication adherence) central in the prevention and management CHD. Intimate partners also influence-and are influenced by-stressful aspects of acute coronary crises and longer-term patient adjustment and management. Evidence on each of these roles of intimate relationships in CHD is considerable, but direct demonstrations of the value of couple assessments and interventions are limited, although preliminary research is promising. Research needed to close this gap must also address issues of diversity, disparities, and inequity that have strong parallels in CHD and intimate relationships.

Abstract
Myocarditis has been discovered to be a significant complication of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a condition caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus. COVID-19 myocarditis seems to have distinct inflammatory characteristics, which make it unique to other viral etiologies. The incidence of COVID-19 myocarditis is still not clear as a wide range of figures have been quoted in the literature; however, it seems that the risk of developing myocarditis increases with more severe infection. Furthermore, the administration of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccine has been associated with the development of myocarditis, particularly after the second dose. COVID-19 myocarditis has a wide variety of presentations, ranging from dyspnea and chest pain to acute heart failure and possibly death. It is important to catch any cases of myocarditis, particularly those presenting with fulminant myocarditis which can be characterized by signs of heart failure and arrythmias. Initial work up for suspected myocarditis should include serial troponins and electrocardiograms. If myocardial damage is detected in these tests, further screening should be carried out. Cardiac magnetic resonance imagining and endomyocardial biopsy are the most useful tests for myocarditis. Treatment for COVID-19 myocarditis is still controversial; however, the use of intravenous immunoglobulins and corticosteroids in combination may be effective, particularly in cases of fulminant myocarditis. Overall, the incidence of COVID-19 myocarditis requires further research, while the use of intravenous immunoglobulins and corticosteroids in conjunction requires large randomized controlled trials to determine their efficacy.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease constitutes the leading cause of mortality worldwide, irrespective of race/ethnicity. Previous studies have shown that minority patients with acute coronary syndrome have distinct clinical, anatomic, and socioeconomic characteristics which may affect clinical outcomes. We included patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention with drug-eluting stents for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), non-STEMI, or unstable angina in a single center. Patients were stratified into Caucasian, African-American, Hispanic, and Asian. Caucasians were the reference group. The primary end point was major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events, composite of death, spontaneous myocardial infarction, or stroke at 1 year. Of 6,800 patients included, 49.7% were Caucasian, 20.7% Hispanic, 17.0% Asian and 12.6% African-American. Caucasians were the oldest, Hispanics and Asians had the highest prevalence of diabetes mellitus whereas African-Americans had more chronic kidney disease. Hispanics and African-Americans had the highest STEMI rates, whereas Asians were more likely to present with unstable angina. Compared with Caucasians, Asians had a lower rate of major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events at 1 year (3.9% vs 7.1%; p <0.01) whereas Hispanics (6.2% vs 7.1%; p = 0.17) and African-Americans (8.0% vs 7.1%; p = 0.38) had comparable outcomes. Differences were driven by mortality. Findings remained unchanged after adjustment. In conclusion, in acute coronary syndrome patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention, Asian race/ethnicity was associated with favorable cardiovascular outcomes compared with Caucasians. No significant differences were observed for Hispanics and African-Americans.

Abstract
Cardiogenic shock (CS) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Differentiating the etiologic factors driving CS has epidemiological significance and aids in optimization of therapeutic strategies, prognostication, and resource utilization. The aim herein is to investigate the epidemiology and clinical outcomes of CS in those with ischemic and nonischemic CS etiologies. Using International Classification of Diseases codes, we queried the national inpatient sample for CS hospitalization from 2007 to 2018 and divided the study sample into cohorts of ischemic (I-CS) and nonischemic cardiogenic shock (NI-CS). We then compared the primary outcome of in-hospital mortality between these 2 cohorts. Two groups of secondary outcomes (clinical and procedural) were also assessed between the 2 cohorts. CS was present in 557,860 hospitalizations; 84% of these were I-CS and 15.8% NI-CS. Patients with I-CS were older, more commonly males, with more risk factors for coronary artery disease (P < 0.05). NI-CS had higher prevalence of preexisting systolic heart failure and atrial fibrillation. The in-hospital mortality was significantly higher in patients with I-CS (32.2% vs. 29.5%, adjusted odds ratio 1.10, P < 0.001). Frequencies of acute ischemic stroke, mechanical ventilation, ventricular arrhythmias, and vascular complications were higher in I-CS versus NI-CS, while acute kidney injury and acute liver failure were more common in NI-CS (P < 0.05). The use of mechanical circulatory support devices was higher in the I-CS group. In conclusion, patients with I-CS comprise the vast majority of CS and are associated with higher mortality and higher resource utilization. Conversely, patients with NI-CS appear to have higher survival but with a higher prevalence of end-organ dysfunction.

Abstract
Background Non-diabetic coronary artery disease (CAD) patients are thought to encounter metabolic dysfunction and while these changes may be imperceptible to the patient they probably influence outcomes. At present, there is no system to support patients sensing these subtle changes, nor is there an established model for prognoses. The Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP) index has already proven useful for atherosclerosis although further research is needed, especially for those without hyperglycemia. Methods This is a prospective study of 5538 non-diabetic CAD patients who had received percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Participants were assigned to one of three groups according to their AIP index. High AIP index cases were then compared to low index patients according to major adverse cardiac events (MACE). Restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis was also conducted to investigate interrelations between AIP index levels and hazard ratios (HR) for MACEs. Results Patients with a high AIP index encountered metabolic dysfunction compared to those with a low AIP index i.e., higher Body Mass Index (BMI), Total Cholesterol (TC), Triglycerides (TG), and uric acid as well as lower HDL-C. Each of the aforementioned interrelations were significant with p values of less than 0.001. There was also a significant increase in the number of MACEs in the high AIP index group compared to the low AIP index group (HR: 1.37, 95% CI 1.04–1.81; p = 0.025). A J-shaped RCS curve highlighted a change in the HR after the 0.18 juncture (HR per SD: 1.20, 95% CI 0.96–1.50). Further subgroup analysis supported the main findings, all with HRs greater than one. Conclusion The AIP index could be used in prognostics for non-diabetic CAD patients 2 years after PCI. The relationship between hazard ratio and the AIP index appears to be J-shaped. Although, further multi-center studies designed for non-diabetic patients with potential metabolic dysfunction should be conducted to determine the value of the AIP index.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS The role of social determinants of health in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is poorly characterized. Limited research examining CRS health disparities indicates that minority status is associated with worse CRS. However, many of these studies are retrospective or performed in populations without substantial ethnic minorities. Rhinologists need to characterize existing CRS disease disparities to develop targeted strategies for improving care in these populations. This prospective study assesses preoperative CRS disease burden in South Florida (SFL) Hispanic and non-Hispanic patients and examines potential factors contributing CRS disease disparities. STUDY DESIGN Prospective cohort study. METHODS The prospective cohort study included consecutive patients having primary endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) for CRS between September 2019 and February 2020 with complete preoperative data. Data were collected in clinic and surgery. Descriptive statistics compare Hispanic and non-Hispanic cohorts. Linear regression adjusts for confounders. Relative risk (RR) compared CRS severity markers. RESULTS Thirty-eight Hispanic and 56 non-Hispanic patients met inclusion criteria. Age, sex, CT scores, insurance payer, and comorbidities were similar between cohorts. Hispanics presented with worse 22-item Sinonasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) (55; SD = 18) compared to non-Hispanics (37; SD = 22) (P < .001). Hispanics tended to have a higher risk of severe CRS markers, including nasal polyps RR = 2.5 (95% CI: 1.0-5.9), neo-osteogenesis RR = 1.6 (95% CI: 0.5-4.7), extended procedures (i.e., draft III) RR = 2.97 (95% CI: 1.0-9.1), and tissue eosinophilia RR = 1.46 (95% CI: 0.6-3.5). Hispanics reported longer sinonasal symptom duration. CONCLUSIONS SFL hispanic patients presenting for primary ESS have worse sinonasal disease burden. SFL Hispanics have markers of greater CRS severity and report longer delays before receiving CRS care. These factors may contribute to increased sinonasal disease burden in Hispanic patients. Abstract
BACKGROUND Cell division cycle 42 (CDC42) regulates macrophage polarization, vascular inflammation, atherosclerosis progression, and modifies differentiation of T helper (Th) cells, while its potential as a biomarker in coronary heart disease (CHD) patients is still lacking. This study aimed to evaluate CDC42 expression, its correlation with Th1, Th2, and Th17 cells, adhesion molecules, and biochemical indexes in CHD patients. METHODS One hundred two CHD patients and 50 controls were enrolled. CDC42 expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells was assessed by reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction in all participants. In CHD patients, Th1, Th2, and Th17 cells were detected by flow cytometric analysis; meanwhile, serum levels of inflammatory cytokines and adhesion molecules were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS CDC42 was lower in CHD patients (median (interquartile range (IQR)) = 0.431 (0.304-0.722)) than in controls (median (IQR) = 0.985 (0.572-1.760)) (p < 0.001). CDC42 was positively associated with Th2 cells (p = 0.016) and interleukin (IL)-10 (p = 0.034), but negatively correlated with Th17 cells (p < 0.001) and IL-17A (p < 0.001) in CHD patients. However, no association was found in CDC42 with Th1 cells (p = 0.199) or interferon-γ (p = 0.367) in CHD patients. Besides, CDC42 was negatively correlated with vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (p = 0.013) and intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (p = 0.001) in CHD patients. Additionally, CDC42 negatively associated with C-reactive protein (p < 0.001), Gensini score (p < 0.001), total cholesterol (p = 0.039), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p = 0.014), but not with other biochemical indexes (p > 0.05) in CHD patients. CONCLUSION CDC42 correlates with Th2 cells, Th17 cells, and adhesion molecules, also reflects inflammation, coronary stenosis degree, and cholesterol level in CHD patients.

Abstract
(1) Background: Despite having consistently lower rates of obesity than other ethnic groups, Asian Americans (AAs) are more likely to be identified as metabolically obese, suggesting an ethnic-specific association between BMI and cardiometabolic outcomes. The goal of this study was to provide an estimate of metabolic syndrome (MetS) prevalence among AAs using national survey data and to compare this rate to that of non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs) over the BMI continuum. (2) Methods: Using the NHANES 2011-2016 data, we computed age-adjusted, gender-specific prevalence of MetS and its individual components for three BMI categories. Furthermore, we conducted multivariate binary logistic regression to examine the risk of MetS in AAs compared to NHWs, controlling for sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. The analysis sample consisted of 2121 AAs and 6318 NHWs. (3) Results: Among AAs, the prevalence of MetS and its components increased with higher BMI levels, with overall prevalence being 5.23% for BMI < 23, 38.23% for BMI of 23-27.4, and 77.68% for BMI ≥ 27.5 in men; and 18.61% for BMI < 23, 47.82% for BMI of 23-27.4, and 67.73% for BMI ≥ 27.5 in women. We also found that for those with a BMI > 23, AAs had a higher predicted risk of MetS than their NHW counterparts of the same BMI level, in both men and women. (4) Conclusions: Our findings support the use of lower BMI ranges for defining overweight and obesity in Asian populations, which would allow for earlier and more appropriate screening for MetS and may better facilitate prevention efforts.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the United States. This study analyzed predictors of myocardial infarction (MI) for those aged 35 and older based on demographic, socioeconomic, geographic, behavioral, and risk factors, as well as access to healthcare variables using the Center for Disease (CDC) Control Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey for the year 2019. Multiple quasibinomial models were generated on an 80% training set hierarchically and then used to forecast the 20% test set. The final training model proved somewhat capable of prediction with a weighted F1-Score = 0.898. A complete model based on statistically significant variables using the entirety of the dataset was compared to the same model built on the training set. Models demonstrated coefficient stability. Similar to previous studies, age, gender, marital status, veteran status, income, home ownership, employment status, and education level were important demographic and socioeconomic predictors. The only geographic variable that remained in the model was associated with the West North Central Census Division (in-creased risk). Statistically important behavioral and risk factors as well as comorbidities included health status, smoking, alcohol consumption frequency, cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), kidney disease, and arthritis. Three access to healthcare variables proved statistically significant: lack of a primary care provider (Odds Ratio, OR = 0.853, p < 0.001), cost considerations prevented some care (OR = 1.232, p < 0.001), and lack of an annual checkup (OR = 0.807, p < 0.001). The directionality of these odds ratios is congruent with a marginal effects model and implies that those without MI are more likely not to have a primary provider or annual checkup, but those with MI are more likely to have missed care due to the cost of that care. Cost of healthcare for MI patients is associated with not receiving care after accounting for all other variables.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Discrepancies in race, ethnicity, and sex among health care providers and their patients have been shown to affect the patient-provider relationship as well as the quality of care. Currently, minority and female representation among orthopaedic surgeons remains low. Given the large proportion of minority athletes and their degree of public visibility, professional sports serves as an important arena within which to analyze the diversity of health care providers. PURPOSE To describe and evaluate the current level of diversity of head team physicians (HTPs) and head athletic trainers (ATCs), primarily in terms of race and sex, within men's professional sports leagues in the United States. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHODS Five major US professional sports leagues were evaluated: National Basketball Association, National Football League, National Hockey League, Major League Soccer, and Major League Baseball. Publicly available data were collected to identify the HTPs and head ATCs for each team within these leagues. Two independent observers analyzed photographs and names of these individuals to determine his or her perceived race and sex, with disagreements being resolved by a third independent observer. Other physician data collected included graduate degree(s), specialty, and number of years in practice. Kappa coefficients (κ) were employed to evaluate interobserver reliability. Chi-square, Fisher exact, and t tests were used for statistical comparisons across leagues. RESULTS The κ values for perceived race were 0.85 for HTPs and 0.89 for head ATCs, representing near-perfect interobserver agreement. Minorities comprised 15.5% of HTPs and 20.7% of ATCs (P = .24). Women comprised 3.9% of HTPs and 1.3% of head ATCs (P = .017). The majority of HTPs were orthopaedic surgeons with medical doctorates. Female HTPs had significantly fewer years in practice compared with male HTPs (15.0 ± 4.9 vs 23.1 ± 9.6; P = .04). CONCLUSION The lead physicians and athletic training providers for men's professional sports teams demonstrated low rates of minority and female representation, denoting a highly visible area for discussing the role of increased diversity in health care.

Abstract
Background South Asians have a greater predisposition to cardiac events, compared to Caucasians. Although cardiac rehabilitation programs (CRPs) are known to improve outcomes, data are sparse regarding benefits acquired by South Asians vs Caucasians. The objective of the current study was to determine the outcomes of South Asian patients undergoing CRPs, compared to Caucasian patients. Methods This study compared baseline characteristics and outcomes in all patients attending a CRP in Edmonton, Canada with a proportionately large South Asian population. Results From 1998 to 2016, a total of 811 South Asians and 5406 Caucasians attended CRPs. Baseline characteristics revealed that there were more nonsmokers (73.4% vs 29.4%, P < 0.001), with a lower body mass index (26.8 ± 0.1 vs 29.6 ± 0.1, P < 0.001), but higher prevalence of diabetes (37.7% vs 20.5%, P < 0.001) in the South Asian population. Outcome measures revealed that South Asians spent less time in the CRP (6.9 weeks ± 0.1 vs 7.3 weeks ± 0.1, P < 0.001), attended the nutrition class less (36.2% vs 53.4%, P < 0.001), and had a lower 6-minute walk improvement (66.9 m vs 73.6 m, P < 0.001). Frequency of use of β-blockers (86.9% vs 86.1%, P > 0.05), antiplatelet agents (96.3% vs 97.1%, P > 0.05), angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (79.9% vs 80.0%, P > 0.05), and cholesterol-lowering agents (91.4% vs 93.8%, P > 0.05) was not significantly different. Conclusions Although South Asians seem to be prescribed and use proven pharmacologic treatments to the same extent as Caucasians, they appeared to benefit less from CRPs. Given higher event rates in South Asians, consideration should be given to altering the delivery of CRPs to South Asians to improve their efficacy.

Abstract
Background Black men and women are at higher risk for, and suffer greater morbidity and mortality from, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) compared with adults of European Ancestry (EA). Black patients with familial hypercholesterolemia are at particularly high risk for ASCVD complications because of lifelong exposure to elevated levels of low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol. Methods and Results This retrospective study analyzed ASCVD prevalence and risk factors in 808 adults with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia from 5 US-based lipid clinics, and compared findings in Black versus EA patients. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to determine the strongest predictors of ASCVD as a function of race. No significant difference was noted in the prevalence of ASCVD in Black versus EA patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (39% versus 32%, respectively; P=0.15). However, Black versus EA patients had significantly greater prevalence of modifiable risk factors, including body mass index (mean, 32±7 kg/m2 versus 29±6 kg/m2; P<0.001), hypertension (82% versus 50%; P<0.001), diabetes (39% versus 15%; P<0.001), and current smoking (16% versus 8%; P=0.006). Black versus EA patients also had significantly lower usage of statins (61% versus 73%; P=0.004) and other lipid-lowering agents. In a fully adjusted multivariate model, race was not independently associated with ASCVD (odds ratio, 0.92; 95% CI, 0.60-1.49; P=0.72). Conclusions The strongest predictors of ASCVD in Black patients with familial hypercholesterolemia were hypertension and cigarette smoking. These data support wider usage of statins and other lipid-lowering therapies and greater attention to modifiable risk, specifically blood pressure management and smoking cessation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate racial disparities in 30-day postoperative outcomes of craniotomy for glioma resection. METHODS 2006-2019 American College of Surgeons' National Surgical Quality Improvement Program files were queried for all patients who underwent a craniotomy for a supratentorial glioma resection. Racial disparities in preoperative variables were studied between the demographic cohorts of Asian, African Americans, Hispanics, and Caucasian. Fisher exact tests were used to examine association of preoperative variables with race. Multivariable logistic regression models, adjusted for all preoperative variables associated with race, were used to determine the odds ratios of postoperative outcomes for each demographic cohort in comparison with Caucasian patients. RESULTS A total of 12,544 patients were identified: 4% Asian, 5% African American, 7% Hispanic, and 85% Caucasian. African American patients had significantly higher adjusted odds than Caucasian patients of major adverse cardiovascular events (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.827, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.155-2.891, P = 0.01), pulmonary events (aOR: 1.683, 95% CI: 1.145-2.473, P = 0.008), and urinary tract infection (aOR: 2.016, 95% CI: 1.221-3.327, P = 0.006). Asian patients had significantly higher odds than Caucasian patients of requiring a transfusion (aOR: 2.094, 95% CI: 1.343-3.266, P = 0.001). All demographic cohorts had higher odds of having an extended length of stay than Caucasian patients. CONCLUSIONS African American patients who undergo a craniotomy for glioma resection have almost twice the odds of Caucasian patients of having a postoperative major cardiovascular complication, pulmonary complication, or urinary tract infection. All minority groups have higher odds of an extended length of stay as compared with Caucasian patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Time in therapeutic range (TTR) of ≥70% is a commonly used indicator of optimal anticoagulation control. This study aimed to determine the patterns and predictors of anticoagulation control in a population-based cohort of new users of warfarin. METHODS This was a retrospective cohort study. All adults (age ≥18 years) who had been newly initiated on warfarin therapy between January 2006 and March 2011were selected from administrative health databases. TTR was calculated using the Rosendaal method. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify patient-related factors associated with optimal TTR. Predictors of patients spending >30% of time above and below the therapeutic international normalised ratio (INR) range were also examined. KEY FINDINGS A total of 6032 patients were included in this study. The mean TTR was 54.1 ± 18.8%, and 82.3% of patients had subthreshold TTR (<70%). Compared with New Zealand Europeans, Māori and Pacific people had decreased odds of achieving optimal TTR and increased odds of spending >30% of time below the therapeutic INR range. Patients aged 65-74 years and 75 years or older had increased odds of achieving optimal TTR but decreased odds of spending >30% of time below the therapeutic INR range than those <65 years. Compared with those living in the least socioeconomically deprived areas, those living in the most deprived areas had decreased odds of achieving optimal TTR. CONCLUSIONS Anticoagulation control with warfarin is suboptimal in routine care in New Zealand. Age, ethnicity and deprivation index were significant predictors of TTR. It is important to ensure equitable access to appropriate, high-quality care for those living in deprived areas and those from ethnic minority groups.

Abstract
We aimed to estimate the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors, including hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and obesity among a sample of individuals incarcerated in an Arizona county jail and compare prevalence estimates to a matched non-institutionalized population. From 2017–2018, individuals housed at a county jail completed a cross-sectional health survey. We estimated the prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, overweight/obesity, cigarette smoking, binge drinking, and self-reported health among individuals incarcerated. We compared prevalence estimates of cardiovascular risk factors to a matched sample of 2017–2018 NHANES participants. Overall, 35.9%, 7.7%, and 17.8% of individuals incarcerated in jail self-reported hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol, respectively. Of individuals incarcerated, 59.6% were overweight or obese and 36.8% self-reported fair or poor general health. Over half of individuals incarcerated reported ever smoking cigarettes (72.3%) and binge drinking (60.7%). Compared to a matched sample of NHANES participants, individuals incarcerated in jail had a statistically higher prevalence of cigarette smoking and binge drinking. Screening of cardiovascular risk factors and providing preventive measures and interventions, such as healthy eating, physical activity, or pharmacological adherence interventions, while individuals are incarcerated may contribute to the prevention and management of cardiovascular risk factors and, eventually, cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
Background The Asian population is the fastest-growing immigrant population in the United States. Prior studies have examined the Asian immigrant population as a homogenous group. We hypothesized that there will be heterogeneity in cardiovascular disease risk factors among Asian immigrant subgroups (Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, Asia) compared with the non-Hispanic White population. Methods and Results A cross-sectional analysis of the 2010 to 2018 National Health Interview Survey was conducted among 508 941 adults who were born in Asian regions or were non-Hispanic White and born in the United States. Generalized linear models with Poisson distribution were fitted to compare the prevalence of self-reported hypertension, overweight/obesity, diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol, physical inactivity, and current smoking among Asian immigrants compared with White adults, adjusting for known confounders. We included 33 973 Asian immigrants from Southeast Asia (45%), Asia (29%), the Indian subcontinent (26%), and 474 968 White adults. Compared with non-Hispanic White adults, Indian subcontinent immigrants had the highest prevalence of overweight/obesity (prevalence ratio, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.19-1.25); Southeast Asian immigrants had the highest prevalence of high cholesterol (prevalence ratio, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.10-1.23); Indian subcontinent (prevalence ratio, 1.69; 95% CI, 1.49-1.93) and Southeast Asian (prevalence ratio, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.26-1.52) immigrants had a higher prevalence of diabetes. All Asian immigrant subgroups were more likely to be physically inactive and less likely to smoke than White adults. Conclusions We observed significant heterogeneity in cardiovascular disease risk factors among Asian immigrants and a varied prevalence of risk factors compared with non-Hispanic White adults. Providers caring for Asian immigrants should provide tailored and culturally informed care to improve the cardiovascular health of this diverse group.

Abstract
Background: Altered lipid metabolism may be a risk factor for dementia, and blood cholesterol level has a strong genetic component. We tested the hypothesis that dyslipidemia (either low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) or high total cholesterol) is associated with cognitive status and domains, and assessed causality using genetic predisposition to dyslipidemia as an instrumental variable. Methods: Using data from European and African genetic ancestry participants in the Health and Retirement Study, we selected observations at the first non-missing biomarker assessment (waves 2006-2012). Cognition domains were assessed using episodic memory, mental status, and vocabulary tests. Overall cognitive status was categorized in three levels (normal, cognitive impairment non-dementia, dementia). Based on 2018 clinical guidelines, we compared low HDL-C or high total cholesterol to normal levels. Polygenic scores for dyslipidemia were used as instrumental variables in a Mendelian randomization framework. Multivariable logistic regressions and Wald-type ratio estimators were used to examine associations. Results: Among European ancestry participants (n = 8,781), at risk HDL-C levels were associated with higher odds of cognitive impairment (OR = 1.20, 95% CI: 1.03, 1.40) and worse episodic memory, specifically. Using cumulative genetic risk for HDL-C levels as a valid instrumental variable, a significant causal estimate was observed between at risk low HDL-C levels and higher odds of dementia (OR = 2.15, 95% CI: 1.16, 3.99). No significant associations were observed between total cholesterol levels and cognitive status. No significant associations were observed in the African ancestry sample (n = 2,101). Conclusion: Our study demonstrates low blood HDL-C is a potential causal risk factor for impaired cognition during aging in non-Hispanic whites of European ancestry. Dyslipidemia can be modified by changing diets, health behaviors, and therapeutic strategies, which can improve cognitive aging. Studies on low density lipoprotein cholesterol, the timing of cholesterol effects on cognition, and larger studies in non-European ancestries are needed.
