Abstract
BACKGROUND Animal and human studies indicate that exposure to air pollution and natural environments might modulate the gut microbiota, but epidemiological evidence is very scarce. OBJECTIVES To assess the potential impact of pre- and postnatal exposure to air pollution and green spaces on infant gut microbiota assembly and trajectories during the first year of life. METHODS MAMI ("MAternal MIcrobes") birth cohort (Valencia, Spain, N = 162) was used to study the impact of environmental exposure (acute and chronic) on infant gut microbiota during the first year of life (amplicon-based 16S rRNA sequencing). At 7 days and at 1, 6 and 12 months, residential pre- and postnatal exposure to air pollutants (NO2, black carbon -BC-, PM2.5 and O3) and green spaces indicators (NDVI and area of green spaces at 300, 500 and 1000 m buffers) were obtained. For the association between exposures and alpha diversity indicators linear regression models (cross-sectional analyses) and mixed models, including individual as a random effect (longitudinal analyses), were applied. For the differential taxon analysis, the ANCOM-BC package with a log count transformation and multiple-testing corrections were used. RESULTS Acute exposure in the first week of life and chronic postnatal exposure to NO2 were associated with a reduction in microbial alpha diversity, while the effects of green space exposure were not evident. Acute and chronic (prenatal or postnatal) exposure to NO2 resulted in increased abundance of Haemophilus, Akkermansia, Alistipes, Eggerthella, and Tyzerella populations, while increasing green space exposure associated with increased Negativicoccus, Senegalimassilia and Anaerococcus and decreased Tyzzerella and Lachnoclostridium populations. DISCUSSION We observed a decrease in the diversity of the gut microbiota and signs of alteration in its composition among infants exposed to higher levels of NO2. Increasing green space exposure was also associated with changes in gut microbial composition. Further research is needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Due to the challenges associated with accurately identifying Raoultella ornithinolytica as the causative agent in urinary tract infections (UTIs), coupled with limited guidance on treatment protocols, reports of similar cases still need to be made publicly available because of their increasing emergence. In this article, we present the first documented case of a UTI caused by Raoultella ornithinolytica in a patient with triple-negative breast cancer undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy. This case report highlights Raoultella ornithinolytica as an uncommon yet significant pathogen, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Given the bacterium's antibiotic resistance patterns, it emphasizes the importance of prompt, accurate identification methods and tailored treatment strategies, especially in vulnerable populations undergoing chemotherapy.

Abstract
Antibiotic related intestinal injury in early life affects subsequent health and susceptibility. Here, we employed weaned piglets as a model to investigate the protective effects of baicalin against early-life antibiotic exposure-induced microbial dysbiosis. Piglets exposed to lincomycin showed a marked reduction in body weight (p < 0.05) and deterioration of jejunum intestinal morphology, alongside an increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as Staphylococcus, Dolosicoccus, Escherichia-Shigella, and Raoultella. In contrast, baicalin treatment resulted in body weights, intestinal morphology, and microbial profiles that closely resembled those of the control group (p > 0.05), with a significant increase in norank_f_Muribaculaceae and Prevotellaceae_NK3B31_group colonization compared with lincomycin group (p < 0.05). Further analysis through fecal microbial transplantation into mice revealed that lincomycin exposure led to significant alterations in intestinal morphology and microbial composition, notably increasing harmful microbes and decreasing beneficial ones such as norank_Muribaculaceae and Akkermansia (p < 0.05). This shift was associated with an increase in harmful metabolites and disruption of the calcium signaling pathway gene expression. Conversely, baicalin supplementation not only counteracted these effects but also enhanced beneficial metabolites and regulated genes within the MAPK signaling pathway (MAP3K11, MAP4K2, MAPK7, MAPK13) and calcium channel proteins (ORA13, CACNA1S, CACNA1F and CACNG8), suggesting a mechanism through which baicalin mitigates antibiotic-induced intestinal and microbial disturbances. These findings highlight baicalin's potential as a plant extract-based intervention for preventing antibiotic-related intestinal injury and offer new targets for therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
Seventeen Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic bacterial strains were isolated from bleeding cankers of various broadleaf hosts and oak rhizosphere soil in Great Britain. The strains were tentatively identified as belonging to the genus Raoultella based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA), based on four protein-encoding genes (fusA, leuS, pyrG, and rpoB), separated the strains into three clusters within the Raoultella genus clade. The majority of strains clustered with the type strain of Raoultella terrigena, with the remaining strains divided into two clusters with no known type strain. Whole genome sequencing comparisons confirmed these two clusters of strains as belonging to two novel Raoultella species which can be differentiated phenotypically from their current closest phylogenetic relatives. Therefore, two novel species are proposed: Raoultella scottia sp. nov. (type strain = BAC 10a-01-01T = LMG 33072T = CCUG 77096T) and Raoultella lignicola sp. nov. (type strain = TW_WC1a.1T = LMG 33073T = CCUG 77094T).

Abstract
Background: Raoultella planticola is an uncommon gram-negative organism found in the environment. Patients and Methods: The patient, an 81-year-old female who had undergone total cystectomy and bilateral ureteral stoma surgery, presented to the hospital with a fever. It was determined that Raoultella planticola was responsible for the bacteremia. Results: Rapid identification of bacteria using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) in blood culture samples and appropriate antibacterial treatment was begun and the patient was discharged three days later. Conclusions: This case emphasizes the presence of a rare pathogen as the cause of bacteremia and underscores the importance of utilizing rapid methods for bacterial identification to establish an accurate diagnosis.

Abstract
This study aims to report an acute dacryocystitis associated with Raoultella planticola infection. The patient's medical records and laboratory were thoroughly assessed. A thorough literature search was performed in PubMed database. An additional search was made in Google Scholar to complete the collected items. This is the first recorded case of acute dacryocystitis attributed to Raoultella planticola infection. A limited number of studies has related this pathogen with conjunctivitis. Acute dacryocystitis on rare occasions can also be caused by atypical organisms. Swabs must be obtained and patients must be started on empirical treatment while waiting for the laboratory results.

Abstract
Background and Aim Antibiotic resistance is a major global health threat. The increasing prevalence of drug-resistant bacteria poses a serious challenge to the effective treatment of infections in both humans and animals. Water is a major source of human and animal exposure to bacteria, and the presence of drug-resistant bacteria in water could present a severe threat to public health and animal production. This study investigated the presence of drug-resistant bacteria in Lam Pao Dam (LPD) water in Kalasin, Thailand. Materials and Methods Ampicillin-resistant strains were obtained from LPD water and identified using 16s rDNA sequencing. Antibiotic resistance genes were detected by polymerase chain reaction using specific primers. The presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria was evaluated using 16s amplicon analysis. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Raoultella ornithinolytica strains against antibiotics was determined. Results A total of 12 R. ornithinolytica, 4 Bacillus cereus, and 4 Enterococcus faecalis isolates were resistant to ampicillin. Almost all R. ornithinolytica strains harbored blaSHV and blaOXA genes, and two strains also harbored the blaNDM-1 gene. All four E. faecalis strains harbored the blaIMP gene. The most abundant species in the LPD sample was Exiguobacterium indicum, followed by E. faecalis and R. ornithinolytica. The MICs of 10 R. ornithinolytica strains against five antibiotics revealed that all strains were resistant to ampicillin but susceptible to meropenem, doripenem, ertapenem, and imipenem. Conclusion These findings suggest a high prevalence of drug-resistant bacteria in LPD water. This is a cause for concern, as it could spread antibiotic-resistant infections in the community.

Abstract
The spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment exacerbates the contamination of these genes; therefore, the role plants play in the transmission of resistance genes in the food chain requires further research. Giant pandas consume different bamboo parts at different times, which provides the possibility of investigating how a single food source can affect the variation in the spread of ARGs. In this study, metagenomic analysis and the Comprehensive Antibiotic Resistance Database (CARD) database were used to annotate ARGs and the differences in gut microbiota ARGs during the consumption of bamboo shoots, leaves, and culms by captive giant pandas. These ARGs were then compared to investigate the impact of bamboo part consumption on the spread of ARGs. The results showed that the number of ARGs in the gut microbiota of the subjects was highest during the consumption of bamboo leaves, while the variety of ARGs was highest during the consumption of shoots. Escherichia coli, which poses a higher risk of ARG dissemination, was significantly higher in the leaf group, while Klebsiella, Enterobacter, and Raoultella were significantly higher in the shoot group. The ARG risk brought by bamboo shoots and leaves may originate from soil and environmental pollution. It is recommended to handle the feces of giant pandas properly and regularly monitor the antimicrobial and virulence genes in their gut microbiota to mitigate the threat of antibiotic resistance.

Abstract
We present a case of Raoultella planticola (R. planticola) infection that resulted in community-acquired pneumonia in an immunocompetent patient with an eight-week history of productive cough. This gram-negative bacterium is typically found in the environment and has the potential to infect humans. Raoultella planticola infections in humans have been recorded in several case reports from throughout the world in recent years, usually affecting immunocompromised patients. Although R. planticola is sensitive to most antibiotic groups, recent studies have revealed an increase in the infrequent acquisition of resistance genes in R. planticola, such as carbapenem resistance, making this pathogen a potential emergent threat. Our patient acquired R. planticola pneumonia in the absence of any underlying risk factors, making this the first case in the UK of R. planticola causing community-acquired pneumonia in an immunocompetent person.

Abstract
Infective endocarditis remains a condition associated with high morbidity and mortality, regardless of advances in diagnosis and therapeutics. The etiology, microbiology, and epidemiology of infective endocarditis have changed in the last years, with healthcare-associated infective endocarditis being responsible for a myriad of cases. Raoultella planticola is rarely the cause of infective endocarditis. We present a 72-year-old Caucasian female with a history of mitral valve replacement for rheumatic valve disease two months before the current presentation, without any immunosuppressive pathologies, diagnosed with Raoultella planticola infective endocarditis. Long-drawn antibiotic treatment led to a full recovery with no evidence of recurrence or relapse. This report highlights the importance of a multimodal approach for the diagnosis of bacterial etiology, the importance of selection and duration of an appropriate antibiotic regimen, and the presence of a rare opportunistic bacteria that has proven pathogenicity in a wide range of organ systems, usually in patients with several risk factors.

Abstract
Bullous lung lesions from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia, causing pneumothorax, are a rare complication, affecting up to 1% of infected patients. Raoultella planticola is an aerobic, gram-negative bacteria known to cause opportunistic infection. We present a rare case of spontaneous pneumothorax from rupture of lung bulla as a late sequela from COVID-19 pneumonia and superinfection of the bulla by R. planticola. Although superinfection of bullous lesions is known, this is the first reported case of R. planticola pneumonia in a patient with COVID-19 lung bullae. COVID-19 patients are at heightened risk for bullous lung lesions and superinfection by opportunistic organisms; thus, they should be followed up closely.

Abstract
Background The contribution of community and hospital sources to the transmission of extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-PE) remains elusive. Aim To investigate the extent of community dissemination and the contribution of hospitals to the spread of ESBL-PE by exploring their spatiotemporal distribution in municipal wastewater of the central European city of Basel. Methods Wastewater samples were collected monthly for two consecutive years throughout Basel, Switzerland, including 21 sites across 10 postcode areas of the city collecting either community wastewater (urban sites, n = 17) or community and hospital wastewater (mixed sites, n = 4). Presumptive ESBL-PE were recovered by selective culture methods. Standard methodologies were applied for species identification, ESBL-confirmation, and quantification. Results Ninety-five percent (477/504) of samples were positive for ESBL-PE. Among these isolates, Escherichia coli (85%, 1,140/1,334) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (11%, 153/1,334) were most common. They were recovered throughout the sampling period from all postcodes, with E. coli consistently predominating. The proportion of K. pneumoniae isolates was higher in wastewater samples from mixed sites as compared to samples from urban sites, while the proportion of E. coli was higher in samples from urban sites (p = 0.003). Higher numbers of colony forming units (CFUs) were recovered from mixed as compared to urban sites (median 3.2 × 102 vs. 1.6 × 102 CFU/mL). E. coli-counts showed moderate correlation with population size (rho = 0.44), while this correlation was weak for other ESBL-PE (rho = 0.21). Conclusion ESBL-PE are widely spread in municipal wastewater supporting that community sources are important reservoirs entertaining the spread of ESBL-PE. Hospital-influenced abundance of ESBL-PE appears to be species dependent.

Abstract
Periodontitis has been commonly linked to periodontopathogens categorized in Socransky's microbial complexes; however, there is a lack of knowledge regarding "other microorganisms" or "cryptic microorganisms", which are rarely thought of as significant oral pathogens and have been neither previously categorized nor connected to illnesses in the oral cavity. This study hypothesized that these cryptic microorganisms could contribute to the modulation of oral microbiota present in health or disease (periodontitis and/or obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients). For this purpose, the presence and correlation among these cultivable cryptic oral microorganisms were identified, and their possible role in both conditions was determined. Data from oral samples of individuals with or without periodontitis and with or without OSA were obtained from a previous study. Demographic data, clinical oral characteristics, and genera and species of cultivable cryptic oral microorganisms identified by MALDI-TOF were recorded. The data from 75 participants were analyzed to determine the relative frequencies of cultivable cryptic microorganisms' genera and species, and microbial clusters and correlations tests were performed. According to periodontal condition, dental-biofilm-induced gingivitis in reduced periodontium and stage III periodontitis were found to have the highest diversity of cryptic microorganism species. Based on the experimental condition, these findings showed that there are genera related to disease conditions and others related to healthy conditions, with species that could be related to different chronic diseases being highlighted as periodontitis and OSA comorbidities. The cryptic microorganisms within the oral microbiota of patients with periodontitis and OSA are present as potential pathogens, promoting the development of dysbiotic microbiota and the occurrence of chronic diseases, which have been previously proposed to be common risk factors for periodontitis and OSA. Understanding the function of possible pathogens in the oral microbiota will require more research.

Abstract
Abstract
A 67-year-old woman presented with lower abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. Computed tomography was suggestive of cholecystitis, but neither ultrasound nor magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography found evidence of cholecystitis or biliary ductal dilatation. The patient was started on piperacillin-tazobactam, and blood cultures revealed gram-negative-rod bacteremia. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed and bile cultures grew Raoultella planticola susceptible to ciprofloxacin, which was identical to the speciation of her positive blood cultures. In addition, pathology revealed adenomyomatous hyperplasia of the gallbladder and chronic cholecystitis. Unlike other cases of R. planticola cholecystitis, our patient had no significant risk factors for the infection—no history of immunosuppression, diabetes mellitus, nor underlying malignancy. We discuss the current knowledge of R. planticola infection in the setting of chronic cholecystitis and adenomyomatous hyperplasia.

Abstract
Restrictive diets for the treatment of different gastrointestinal disorders are reported to change the composition of intestinal microbiota. Recently, it has been proposed that individuals with histamine intolerance suffer from intestinal dysbiosis, having an overabundance of histamine-secreting bacteria, but how it is still unknown this state is affected by the usual dietary treatment of histamine intolerance [i.e., low-histamine diet and the supplementation with diamine oxidase (DAO) enzyme]. Thus, a preliminary study was carried out aiming to evaluate the potential changes on the composition of the intestinal microbiota in a group of five women diagnosed with histamine intolerance undergoing 9 months of the dietary treatment of histamine intolerance. After sequencing bacterial 16S rRNA genes (V3-V4 region) and analyzing the data using the EzBioCloud Database, we observed a reduction in certain histamine-secreting bacteria, including the genera Proteus and Raoultella and the specie Proteus mirabilis. Moreover, it was also observed an increase in Roseburia spp., a bacterial group frequently related to gut health. These changes could help to explain the clinical improvement experienced by histamine intolerant women underwent a dietary treatment.

Abstract
Raoul ornithine-releasing bacteria widely exist in water, plants, and soil, and colonize the digestive tract and upper respiratory tract of the human body. They are aerobic, unpowered, and capsular opportunistic pathogens. The infectivity of this bacterium is still uncertain, but the possibility of nosocomial infection has been mentioned in the literature. Studies have pointed out that the bacterium should be diagnosed in time and sensitive antibiotics should be used early. Once complicated with sepsis, it can cause multiple organ failure with a poor prognosis. In this study, we retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of nine cases of neonatal L. ornithine septicemia, to explore the clinical characteristics of neonatal L. ornithine septicemia and anti-infection therapy.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess dietary organic zinc on zinc homeostasis, antioxidant capacity, immune response, glycolysis and intestinal microbiota in white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei Boone, 1931). Six experimental diets were formulated: Control, zinc free; S120, 120 mg·kg-1 zinc from ZnSO4·7H2O added into control diet; O30, O60, O90 and O120, 30, 60, 90 and 120 mg·kg-1 zinc from Zn-proteinate added into control diet, respectively. The results showed that organic zinc significantly promoted zinc content and gene expression of ZnT1, ZIP11 and MT in the hepatopancreas and enhanced antioxidant capacity and immunity (in terms of increased activities of T-SOD, Cu/Zn SOD, PO, LZM, decreased content of MDA, upregulated expressions of GST, G6PDH, ProPO, LZM and Hemo, and increased resistance to Vibrio parahaemolyticus). Organic zinc significantly upregulated GluT1 expression in the intestine, increased glucose content of plasma and GCK, PFK and PDH activities of hepatopancreas, and decreased pyruvate content of hepatopancreas. Organic zinc improved intestinal microbiota communities, increased the abundance of potentially beneficial bacteria and decreased the abundance of potential pathogens. Inorganic zinc (S120) also had positive effects, but organic zinc (as low as O60) could achieve better effects. Overall, organic zinc had a higher bioavailability and was a more beneficial zinc resource than inorganic zinc in shrimp feeds.

. No other causative pathogens were clearly identified. He gradually improved with a 4 week course of intravenous cefazolin.

Abstract
Neuropsychiatric behaviors caused by sleep deprivation (SD) are severe public health problems in modern society worldwide. This study investigated the effect of fish oil on neuropsychiatric behaviors, barrier injury, microbiota dysbiosis, and microbiota-derived metabolites in SD rats. The rats subjected to SD had significantly elevated blood levels of corticosteroid and lipopolysaccharides and exhibited anxiety-like behavior in the open field test, depression-like behavior in the forced swim test, and cognitive impairment in the Morris water maize test. We observed that the upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines in the SD rats resulted in colonic epithelial barrier injury including a decreased number of goblet cells and increased expression of selected tight junction proteins in the gut and brain. The gut microbiome status revealed a significant decrease in the microbial diversity in the SD rats, especially in probiotics. By contrast, a fish oil-based diet reversed SD-induced behavioral changes and improved the epithelial barrier injury and dysbiosis of the microbiota in the colon. These findings could be attributable to the increase in probiotics and short-chain fatty acid (SCFAs) production, improvement in selected intestinal barrier proteins, increase in SCFA receptor expression, and decrease in blood circulation proinflammatory status due to fish oil supplementation.

Abstract
The genus Raoultella spp. is comprised of four species, namely, R. electrica, R. ornithinolytica, R. planticola, and R. terrigena, which are rarely reported to cause infections in humans. This study aimed to characterize six strains of Raoultella spp. isolated from stool samples from patients with diarrhea. The strains included in the study were previously identified by biochemical methods as K. pneumoniae, during a surveillance study conducted in 1987. In the present study, the strains were re-identified by MALDI TOF and 16S rRNA sequencing and subsequently subjected to virulence gene screening by PCR, hemolytic activity, biofilm formation, hypermucoviscosity phenotype, capacity to interact with Caco-2 cells, and antimicrobial susceptibility test. Our results revealed that, among the six strains, three were identified as R. ornithinolytica and three as R. planticola. The genes related to iron uptake systems (aero1, aero2, iutA, entB, and ybtS) and adhesin (mrkD) were found in all strains. Furthermore, all strains demonstrated the ability to interact in vitro with Caco-2 cells and form biofilms. In general, the strains studied were sensitive to the antimicrobials tested; however, it was possible to observe high MICs for imipenem compared to ertapenem and meropenem and high minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for ceftazidime, except for one strain. Our results show the occurrence of virulent strains of Raoultella spp. with high MICs for imipenem and ceftazidime causing diarrhea. We hope that our findings can contribute to the understanding of the evolution of this species since, as far as we know, these are the oldest isolates reported so far.

Abstract
Raoultella (R.) ornithinolytica is a gram-negative, encapsulated aerobe or facultative anaerobe belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae. It is distinguished from other members in the family with a negative indole test, growth at 10oC, production of histamine, a negative D-melezitose test, and metabolism of ornithine. R. ornithinolytica is a versatile organism found in different habitats, including soil, water, and plants, as well as colonizing the human gastrointestinal tract and throat. It was considered to cause opportunistic infection in humans but is increasingly being implicated in infections in immunocompetent individuals. Raoultella ornithinolytica causes infection in different clinical settings. Sepsis from Raoultella ornithinolytica is increasing among humans, and it is considered an emerging infectious agent in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent people. There is an increasing level of antibiotic resistance among isolates with reports of multidrug resistance. We report the case of a 95-year-old man with multidrug-resistant R. ornithinolytica multisystem infection and review the literature.

Abstract
Raoultella ornithinolytica is an opportunistic, aquaphilic and Gram-negative bacterium. Immune deficiency states and indwelling catheters provide a basis for most of the infections arising. R. ornithinolytica septicemia (ROS) is extremely rare in neonates but can be life threatening. Community-acquired ROS has not been described in neonates before. The diagnosis of neonatal septicemia is occasionally complicated by unusual clinical presentations. Pyloric stenosis is manifested by projectile, nonbilious vomiting and late findings, including weight loss, dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities beyond 4-6 weeks old. Community-acquired neonatal septicemia symptoms can sometimes be confused with symptoms of gastrointestinal obstructions in patients without risk factors for sepsis. Early diagnosis and appropriate antibiotics are essentials for a good prognosis in neonatal septicemia. Herein, we present a novel case of community-acquired ROS with an unusual presentation in a term infant and a review of the literature about ROS in the neonatal period.

Abstract
The presence of anaerobic microflora on fresh beef carcass and rump steaks, which may contribute to meat spoilage, was explored in this study. A total of 120 carcass and 120 rump steak swabs were collected immediately after slaughtering and boning, respectively from five meat plants, anaerobically incubated and enriched at 4°C for 3 weeks. This was followed by DNA extraction and 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing using the Illumina MiSeq, with subsequent bioinformatics analysis. The enriched microbiota of the samples was classified and grouped into 149 operational taxonomic units (OTUs). The microbiota recovered from both sample types consisted mainly of Carnobacterium, with an average relative abundance of 28.4% and 32.8% in beef carcasses and beef rump steaks, respectively. This was followed by Streptococcus, Serratia, Lactococcus, Enterococcus, Escherichia-Shigella, Raoultella and Aeromonas ranging from 1.5 to 20% and 0.1 to 29.8% in enriched carcasses and rump steak swabs, respectively. Trichococcus, Bacteroides, Dysgomonas, Providencia, Paraclostridium and Proteus were also present ranging from 0 to 0.8% on carcass and 0 to 1.8% on rump steak swabs, respectively. Alpha and beta diversity measurements showed limited diversity between the two sample types, but some differences between samples from the beef plants investigated were evident. This study highlights the presence of potential spoilage bacteria, mainly anaerobic genera on and between carcass and rump steaks, as an indication of contamination on and between these samples.

Abstract
Raoultella planticola was previously considered an environmental organism in soil, water, and plants. However, several cases of human infection have recently been reported in association with R. planticola, some of which have been life-threatening. Most cases were in adults with reduced immunity, with few cases in children. To our knowledge, there have only been two reported cases of urinary tract infection (UTI) caused by R. planticola in children, including one case of cystitis. Here, we present the first case of UTI caused by R. planticola with congenital anomalies of kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) in a 4-month-old male infant. The patient presented to the emergency department with fever and was diagnosed with UTI. We started third-generation cephalosporins empirically for gram-negative bacteria in the urine, presuming infection with Escherichia coli. On day 1, the patient's fever resolved immediately. On day 2, urine culture was positive for a rare pathogen, R. planticola, and we narrowed antibiotics to first-generation cephalosporins. The patient's fever did not return and he was discharged on day 7. The patient was seen in the clinic 1 week after discharge, with complete resolution of symptoms. Magnetic resonance urography and dynamic renal scintigraphy performed 2 months after discharge revealed severe bilateral hydronephroureter and obstruction of urine flow in the right kidney. As of 6 months after UTI onset, we have continued low-dose cephalexin (10 mg/kg) to prevent the recurrence of UTI and there has been no recurrence. As in this case, children with UTI caused by R. planticola may be associated with CAKUT; therefore, we should actively screen to detect CAKUT. Patients with CAKUT are at high risk of UTI recurrence, so long-term use of unnecessary broad-spectrum antibiotics should be avoided to prevent antimicrobial resistance. However, R. planticola infection is sometimes life-threatening. Hence, it is also important to use sufficiently strong antibiotics for an appropriate period. Although the optimal management of R. planticola infection in children has not been clearly established, we suggest that we can treat UTI caused by R. planticola mainly using first-generation cephalosporins.

Abstract
The genus Raoultella was established in 2001. Species of Raoultella and Klebsiella share many ecological, biochemical, clinical, and microbiological features. Given the shortcomings of available technology for species identification in the clinical microbiology laboratory, are practically indistinguishable. Since the late 2000s there has been an increase in case reports of human Raoultella infections. Therefore, several authors are postulating that Raoultella spp. are rare and/or emerging pathogens. Conclusions:Raoultella spp. are very similar to Klebsiella spp. The epidemiology and the clinical relevance of the human Raoultella spp. infections is uncertain and further studies are required. The previous difficulties in the identification of Raoultella spp. and the introduction of more precise identification techniques may explain the recent increase in the number of case reports. Raoultella spp. might be rather underdiagnosed than rare or emerging pathogens.

Abstract
In the present study, we hypothesized that buckwheat honey (BH) should be regarded as a potential alternative to antibacterial and antioxidant agent in liquid storage of boar semen. To this end, boar semen was firstly studied for in vitro dose tolerability to BH by measuring sperm progressive motility. The optimum progressive motility of boar spermatozoa was observed in extender with 0.5% and 0.6% BH addition. Afterward, sperm quality parameters, bacterial profile and composition, total antioxidant (T-AOC), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels of control, BH supplementation, antibiotics supplementation, and incorporated supplementation were compared during liquid storage period, to further investigate antibacterial and antioxidant properties of BH. The results showed that BH supplementation significantly improved sperm motility, acrosome integrity, plasma membrane integrity, inhibited opportunistic bacterial growth, and altered microbial compositions at the end of preservation. Additionally, T-AOC, SOD, and CAT levels were significantly higher in the BH supplementation group than those in the control and antibiotic supplementation group, whereas MDA level exhibited opposite change pattern. Importantly, BH addition to the extender was able to exert a synergistic effect in combination of antibiotic use. Our findings suggested that the appropriate concentrations (0.5% and 0.6%) of BH were added to the extender could act antibacterial and antioxidant roles in liquid preservation of boar semen.

Abstract
Introduction Raoultella planticola is an aerobic gram-negative rod predominantly found in soil and aquatic environments. The typical reservoirs of Raoultella spp. include the gastrointestinal tract and the upper respiratory tract. It usually causes pneumonia, biliary tract infections, and bacteremia. Urinary tract infection (UTI) secondary to R. planticola is an uncommon entity. Less than 10 cases of R. planticola-associated UTIs in adults have been published in the literature to date. Objective This is a single institution retrospective study undertaken to identify the epidemiology, patient characteristics, clinical spectrum, predisposing risk factors and the outcome of patients with UTI caused by R. planticola. Results A total of 37 R. planticola isolates were identified in urine samples over a 5-year study period. The mean age of the patient population was 77 years. The most common comorbidity was diabetes mellitus, which was present in 16 patients. Only 3 patients had a history of steroid use, an immunosuppressive condition, or were on chemotherapy. The most common presenting complaint was altered mental status followed by fever. Resistance to ampicillin was found in 35 isolates which seems to be an intrinsic characteristic of Raoultella spp. and 2 isolates were multidrug-resistant, but still susceptible to ciprofloxacin. The average length of stay was 3 days, and the average duration of antibiotic administration was 8 days. Ciprofloxacin was the most frequently prescribed antibiotic (9 patients). The severity of infection ranged from simple cystitis in 15 patients to urosepsis in 2 patients and septic shock in 2 patients. There were no mortalities in our cohort. Conclusion Our study revealed that patients with R. planticola UTI had higher proportion of diabetes mellitus, renal failure compared to the general population. Our study also confirms the intrinsic resistance to ampicillin of Raoultella spp., which has been documented previously in the literature.

Abstract
The genus Raoultella contains Raoultella ornithinolytica (R. ornithinolytica), which was previously named as Klebsiella ornithinolytica. R. ornithinolytica is a Gram-negative bacillus that belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae. This pathogen is normally present in aquaculture, and it has been isolated from fish, insects, and wild and domestic birds. Seafood and poultry products are incriminated as sources of R. ornithinolytica infection. Community-acquired human infection with R. ornithinolytica is common. This infection is commonly associated with sepsis, bacteremia, food poisoning, purities, and urinary and respiratory tracts' infections. Rapid acquired resistance of R. ornithinolytica strains is common, and it is related to the development of resistant genes. R. ornithinolytica is considered as a newly emerging life-threatening pathogen world-wide. Hence, it is very important to determine the role of animals and birds in the epidemiological situation of this pathogen as well as the detection of antibiotic resistance genes before treatment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Raoultella spp. is a gram-negative bacillus with increasing clinical importance due to the development of multi-drug resistance and because it has been reported as a cause of invasive infection. The risk of infection increases if comorbidities present such as diabetes mellitus and malignancies. METHODS Descriptive study of clinical and microbiological characteristics in adult patients with Raoultella spp. isolation, treated at a fourth-level hospital in Bogotá, Colombia, between 2015 and 2020. RESULTS 61 patients with isolation of Raoultella spp., 51 were considered infection and 10, colonization. The associated comorbidities were hypertension (n=26, 42.6%), heart failure (n=19, 31.1%) and diabetes mellitus (n=18, 29.5%). AmpC resistance patterns were found in 10 samples (16.4%) and KPC in 3 (4.9%). CONCLUSIONS Raoultella spp. is of clinical importance due to its isolation in immunocompromised patients with multiple comorbidities and due to the increase in multi-resistant strains.

Abstract
Abstract Phenotyping based on conventional microbiological, physiological, and molecular analysis by using ARDRA technique was developed with the aim to assess the pathogenic microbial load associated with different stages of the periodontal disease. In addition, in the face of the global issue of antimicrobial resistance, the isolated bacterial strains were evaluated for their antibiotic susceptibility profile. The pathogenic bacterial community was predominantly of Gram-negative strains (66.66%). The most common species were Citrobacter freundii, Bacillus sp., Raoutella sp., Klebsiella ozaenae and Pseudomonas sp. However, except for the healthy control group, Staphylococcus spp. was isolated from all stages of periodontitis. Multidrug resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics was observed for Streptococcus pneumoniae, Raoutella sp. and Enterococcus avium. Here, we verify a statistically significant relationship between periodontitis stages and the diversity of the bacterial community. Patients with periodontitis showed a more diverse and numerous bacterial community compared to healthy patients. In this sense, we reinforce that biofilms that harbour multidrug-resistant bacteria are a major concern in relation to restoring patient health. Thus, prophylactic measures for maintaining oral health are still the best option for reduce the risk of disease. Graphic Abstract

Abstract
Klebsiella spp. are a major cause of both nosocomial and community acquired infections, with K. pneumoniae being responsible for most human infections. Although Klebsiella spp. are present in a variety of environments, their distribution in the sea and the associated antibiotic resistance is largely unknown. In order to examine prevalence of K. pneumoniae and related species in the marine environment, we sampled 476 batches of marine bivalve molluscs collected along the Norwegian coast. From these samples, K. pneumoniae (n = 78), K. oxytoca (n = 41), K. variicola (n = 33), K. aerogenes (n = 1), Raoultella ornithinolytica (n = 38) and R. planticola (n = 13) were isolated. The number of positive samples increased with higher levels of faecal contamination. We found low prevalence of acquired resistance in all isolates, with seven K. pneumoniae isolates showing resistance to more than one antibiotic class. The complete genome sequence of cefotaxime-resistant K. pneumoniae sensu stricto isolate 2016-1400 was obtained using Oxford Nanopore and Illumina MiSeq based sequencing. The 2016-1400 genome had two contigs, one chromosome of 5,088,943 bp and one plasmid of 191,744 bp and belonged to ST1035. The β-lactamase genes blaCTX-M-3 and blaTEM-1, as well as the heavy metal resistance genes pco, ars and sil were carried on a plasmid highly similar to one found in K. pneumoniae strain C17KP0055 from South-Korea recovered from a blood stream infection. The present study demonstrates that K. pneumoniae are prevalent in the coastal marine environment and that bivalve molluscs may act as a potential reservoir of extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing K. pneumoniae that may be transmitted through the food chain.

Abstract
Coastal areas with important economic activities have high levels of contamination by metals, pathogenic bacteria, among other contaminants. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a global problem of public health. Carbapenem resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) are a serious threat. The occurrence of carbapenem resistant bacteria was investigated in waters and sediments of a Brazilian coastal area, characterized by high levels of contamination. The samples of water and sediment were collected in two areas of the coast of São Paulo (Brazil). The study involved the characterization of the molecular mechanisms associated with the carbapenem resistance phenotype. No genes were detected for β-lactamases but the absence and/or presence of mutations in outer membrane proteins (OMPs) may justify the detected phenotype. The presented results show the need for further studies that allow a review of the current legislation and the importance of the reevaluation of monitoring policies of these environments.

Abstract
Background Raoultella planticola(R.planticola) is a very rare opportunistic pathogen and sometimes even associated with fatal infection in pediatric cases. Recently,the emergence of carbapenem resistance strains are constantly being reported and a growing source of concern for pediatricians. Case presentation We reported 4 cases of neonatal septicemia caused by Raoultella planticola. Their gestational age was 211 to 269 days, and their birth weight was 1490 to 3000 g.The R. planticola infections were detected on the 9th to 27th day after hospitalization and occured between May and June. They clinically manifested as poor mental response, recurrent cyanosis, apnea, decreased heart rate and blood oxygen, recurrent jaundice, fever or nonelevation of body temperature. The C-reactive protein and procalcitonin were elevated at significantly in the initial phase of the infection,and they had leukocytosis or leukopenia. Prior to R.planticola infection,all of them recevied at least one broad-spectrum antibiotic for 7-27d.All the R.planticola strains detected were only sensitive to amikacin, but resistant to other groups of drugs: cephalosporins (such as cefazolin, ceftetan,etc) and penicillins (such as ampicillin-sulbactam,piperacillin,etc),and even developed resistance to carbapenem. All the infants were clinically cured and discharged with overall good prognosis. Conclusion Neonatal septicemia caused by Raoultella planticola mostly occured in hot and humid summer, which lack specific clinical manifestations. Pediatricians should keep in mind that R. planticola can be a potential source of neonatal sepsis and even has the potential to acquire carbapenem-resistance. Preventing outbreaks of epidemics requires early detection, timely diagnosis and treatment, and active isolation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Raoultella are Gram-negative rod-shaped aerobic bacteria which grow in water and soil. They mostly cause nosocomial infections associated with surgical procedures. This case study is the first report of a Raoultella infection in Africa. Case presentation We report a case of a surgical site infection (SSI) caused by Raoultella planticola which developed after caesarean section (CS) and surgery for secondary small bowel obstruction. The patient became febrile with neutrophilia (19,157/µL) 4 days after laparotomy and started to develop clinical signs of a SSI on the 8th day after laparotomy. The patient continued to be febrile and became critically ill despite empirical treatment with ceftriaxone and vancomycin. Raoultella species with extended antimicrobial resistance (AMR) carrying the CTX-M-9 β-lactamase was isolated from the wound discharge. Considering the antimicrobial susceptibility test, ceftriaxone was replaced by ceftazidime. The patient recovered and could be discharged on day 29 after CS. CONCLUSIONS Raoultella planticola was isolated from an infected surgical site after repeated abdominal surgery. Due to the infection the patient's stay in the hospital was prolonged for a total of 4 weeks. It is noted that patients undergoing surgical and prolonged inpatient treatment are at risk for infections caused by Raoultella. The development of a SSI caused by Raoultella planticola with extended AMR has to be assumed to be a consequence of ineffective antibiotic utilization. The presented case advices that rare bacteria as Raoultella should be considered as potential cause of nosocomial SSI with challenging treatment due to high levels of AMR.

Abstract
Increase in the number of small-scale backyard poultry flocks in the USA has substantially increased human-to-live poultry contact, leading to increased public health risks of the transmission of multi-drug resistant (MDR) zoonotic and food-borne bacteria. The objective of this study was to detect the occurrence of Salmonella and MDR Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) in the backyard poultry flock environment. A total of 34 backyard poultry flocks in Washington State (WA) were sampled. From each flock, one composite coop sample and three drag swabs from nest floor, waterer-feeder, and a random site with visible faecal smearing, respectively, were collected. The samples were processed for isolation of Salmonella and other fermenting and non-fermenting GNB under ceftiofur selection. Each isolate was identified to species level using MALDI-TOFF and tested for resistance against 16 antibiotics belonging to eight antibiotic classes. Salmonella serovar 1,4,[5],12:i:- was isolated from one (3%) out of 34 flocks. Additionally, a total of 133 ceftiofur resistant (CefR ) GNB including Escherichia coli (53), Acinetobacter spp. (45), Pseudomonas spp. (22), Achromobacter spp. (8), Bordetella trematum (1), Hafnia alvei (1), Ochrobactrum intermedium (1), Raoultella ornithinolytica (1), and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (1) were isolated. Of these, 110 (82%) isolates displayed MDR. Each flock was found positive for the presence of one or more CefR GNB. Several MDR E. coli (n = 15) were identified as extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) positive. Carbapenem resistance was detected in non-fermenting GNB including Acinetobacter spp. (n = 20), Pseudomonas spp. (n = 11) and Stenotrophomonas maltophila (n = 1). ESBL positive E. coli and carbapenem resistant non-fermenting GNB are widespread in the backyard poultry flock environment in WA State. These GNB are known to cause opportunistic infections, especially in immunocompromised hosts. Better understanding of the ecology and epidemiology of these GNB in the backyard poultry flock settings is needed to identify potential risks of transmission to people in proximity.

Abstract
Raoultella ornithinolytica is an encapsulated Gram-negative, oxidase-negative, catalase-positive, aerobic, non-motile rod that belongs to the Enterobacteriaceae family. This bacterium was initially classified in the genus Klebsiella as Klebsiella ornithinolytica, until the creation of the genus Raoultella in 2001. R. ornithinolytica is usually found in water environments and soil, and due to its ability to convert histidine to histamine, it has been associated with histamine poisoning in humans. R. ornithinolytica is an emerging entity in human infections, with several reports of virulent infections in comorbid at-risk patients. Increasing reports are potentially due to better and more precise identification tools. The objective of this article is to provide a comprehensive review of reported cases of R. ornithinolytica infections, the emergent virulence of described multiresistant strains, and an overview of currently used identification methods.

Abstract
Raoultella ornithinolytica is a bacterium belonging to the family Enterobacteriacae. It is a rare but emergent cause of human pathologies especially in immunocompromised patients. We described the first case in the literature of isolated external otitis sustained by Raoultella ornithinolytica in an immunocompetent host. A 54-year-old Caucasian man with a history of previous myringoplasty came to our attention reporting otalgia and otorrhea. We performed right ear swab for culture examination, meanwhile we started empirical therapy with topic administration of neomycin, without any clinical improvement. The cultural examination showed the presence of a Raoultella ornithinolytica infection. After ten days of treatment with oral ciprofloxacin and topic levofloxacin, there was the complete resolution of pain and inflammation. Raoultella ornithinolytica must be taken into consideration as an emergent cause of human infection, also in case of external otitis. Infection can be severe and can occur both in immunocompromised and in immunocompetent hosts. Culture test is mandatory to choose the proper therapy and avoid potential severe complications.

Abstract
A 20 year-old female at 27-week gestation was admitted for threatened preterm delivery. Following an initially unremarkable hospital course for 12 days, the patient developed fever, chills, generalized malaise, abdominal pain, and diffuse myalgias on day 13 of hospitalization. Raoultella species was isolated from blood cultures on day 16 of hospitalization. The patient's condition improved within 24 hours of symptom onset, prior to antibiotic initiation, and a premature, viable male infant at 29 weeks and 6 days of gestation was delivered via caesarean section four days later due to breech presentation in the setting of preterm labor. Here, we present the first case of a Raoultella species infection in a gravid female reported in the literature.

Abstract
Raoultella ornithinolytica is a pathogen causing an increasing number of pediatric infections. The objective of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics of R. ornithinolytica infections in children. As a retrospective analysis, clinical features and drug susceptibility data of the five cases were analyzed and related literature was reviewed. A total of 14 cases (eight females, six males) were analyzed: nine cases were retrieved from PubMed, Web of Science, and three domestic databases; five cases occurred in our hospital. The primary diseases of the older children were mainly of neoplastic and immune origin, while cases of infants and young children were mostly complicated by congenital malformation. Fever was the main symptom, and neonatal infection was mainly manifested by dyspnea and hypoxemia, with multiple skin flushes, systemic erythema, and leukocytosis. Of the 14 cases, six were ventilator-assisted, five had indwelling urethral catheters, three had surgical treatment or chemotherapy, and one had multiple rounds of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). Blood infection is the main route of R. ornithinolytica infection in children. Skin flushing and systemic erythema might be positive clues for newborn infection. Patients with multiple congenital abnormalities are susceptible to infection. Tumors, immune deficiency, and invasive operations increase the risk of infection. Blood culture was the main method of disease identification. Based on the drug susceptibility results, the preferred antibiotics are third generations of cephalosporins, carbapenems, quinolone, and aminoglycoside. Lastly, patients with sepsis mostly have poor prognosis.

Abstract
OXA-232 is an OXA-48-group class D β-lactamase that hydrolyzes expanded-spectrum cephalosporins and carbapenems at low levels. Clinical strains producing OXA-232 are sometimes susceptible to carbapenems, making it difficult to identify them in the clinical microbiology laboratory. We describe the development of carbapenem resistance in sequential clinical isolates of Raoultella ornithinolytica carrying bla OXA-232 in a hospitalized patient, where the ertapenem MIC increased from 0.5 μg/ml to 512 μg/ml and the meropenem MIC increased from 0.125 μg/ml to 32 μg/ml during the course of ertapenem therapy. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) analysis identified loss-of-function mutations in ompC and ompF in carbapenem-resistant isolates that were not present in the initial carbapenem-susceptible isolate. Complementation of a carbapenem-resistant isolate with an intact ompF gene resulted in 16- to 32-fold reductions in carbapenem MICs, whereas complementation with intact ompC resulted in a 2-fold reduction in carbapenem MICs. Additionally, bla OXA-232 expression increased 2.9-fold in a carbapenem-resistant isolate. Rapid development of high-level carbapenem resistance in initially carbapenem-susceptible OXA-232-producing R. ornithinolytica under selective pressure from carbapenem therapy highlights the diagnostic challenges in detecting Enterobacteriaceae strains producing this inefficient carbapenemase.

Abstract
Raoultella genus consists of Gram-negative, aerobic, encapsulated and non-motile rods. The name of the genus derives from the name of the French bacteriologist Raoul. Currently, four species belong to the genus: R. planticola, R. ornithinolytica, R. terrigena and R. electrica. The standard biochemical test used to identify Raoultella genus should be supplemented with additional tests, because of the close relationship between the genera Raoultella and Klebsiella. In 2001 Klebsiella planticola, K. ornithinolytica and K. terrigena were re-classified to new genus Raoultella. Re-classification was based on 16S rRNA sequence and rpoB, gyrA and gyrB genes. An alternative to phenotypic identification may be mass spectrometry or genetic methods (16s rRNA). These bacteria are commonly associated with natural environments (plants, water, soil). Raoultella spp. rods are not a highly virulent pathogen. Their virulence factors include polysaccharide capsule, fimbriae, siderophores, toxins and ability to form a biofilm. It has been shown that Raoultella spp. may colonize the gastrointestinal and upper respiratory tract in humans and cause cholangitis and lung infections. The literature also includes works on the antimicrobial activity of Raoultella rods and the possibility of using them in the environment protection. This review summarizes the current knowledge of Raoultella species identification, virulence and the possibility of using them in the protection of the environment.

Abstract
To characterize the florfenicol resistance gene and analyze the structure of the resistance gene-related sequence of an Raoultella planticola strain S25 isolated from a duck fecal sample from a farm in South China. Molecular cloning was performed to clone the resistance genes such as mdfA, floR and so on, and the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were quantified to determine the resistance levels generated by the cloned genes and the related strains. Sequencing and comparative genomics methods were used to analyze the structure of the resistance gene-related sequence. The result showed that the genome of R. planticola S25 consists of a 5.47 Mb chromosome encoding 4962 predicted coding sequence (CDS) and a 68,566 bp plasmid, pS25-68, encoding 84 ORFs. The plasmid sharing the greatest sequence identity with the floR-carrying plasmid pS25-68 is plasmid1 in Klebsiella pneumoniae strain blaNDM-1, which was isolated from a patient in Canada. The mdfA1 gene encoded on the chromosome generated resistance to florfenicol in addition to chloramphenicol. Comparative genomic analysis of the floR-related transposon-like fragment of pS25-68 showed that an approximately 3 kb sequence encoding IS91-virD2-floR-lysR was conserved and presented in the majority of the sequences (84.5 %, 169/200) collected from the database. The results of this work demonstrated that horizontal transfer of the florfenicol resistance gene floR occurred widely between the bacteria of different species and with different origins and that additional florfenicol resistance genes may be present in the bacterial population.

Abstract
Raoultella planticola osteomyelitis is rarely reported in the literature. The most likely source in our case is the oral microbiome secondary to the tooth extraction. Herein we present a case of Raoultella planticola osteomyelitis of the jaw that leads to the diagnosis of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) of the jaw. A 75-year-old male with no significant medical history, presented to the emergency department with right upper jaw pain after he had a tooth extraction a week before his presentation. Computed tomography (CT) scan of the face showed concerns of right maxillary osteomyelitis with soft tissue swelling and prominent cervical lymph nodes. He underwent a bone biopsy of the maxilla and was started on intravenous ampicillin-sulbactam. His bone culture grew pan-sensitive Raoultella planticola. in addition to that, his bone biopsy revealed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the jaw. The patient underwent staging imaging, and he was found to have metastasis to the liver. He was started on chemotherapy and had a good response. In conclusion, Raoultella planticola osteomyelitis is extremely rare. The diagnosis of maxillary DLBCL can be a challenge. Fortunately, our patient had an infection at the same site that led to the diagnosis of DLBCL.
