Coordination-Induced Emissive Poly-NHC-Derived Metallacage for Pesticide Detection

Developing sensitive, rapid, and convenient methods for the detection of residual toxic pesticides is immensely important to prevent irreversible damage to the human body. Luminescent metal-organic cages and macrocycles have shown great applications, and designing highly emissive supramolecular systems in dilute solution using metal-ligand coordination-driven self-assembly is demanded. In this study, we have demonstrated the development of a silver-carbene bond directed tetranuclear silver(I)-octacarbene metallacage [Ag4(L)2](PF6)4 (1) based on an aggregation-induced emissive (AIE) cored 1,1',1″,1‴-((1,4-phenylenebis(ethene-2,1,1-triyl))tetrakis(benzene-4,1-diyl))tetrakis(3-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium) salt (L). A 36-fold enhanced emission was observed after metallacage (1) formation when compared with the ligand (L) in dilute solution due to the restriction of intramolecular motions imparted by metal-ligand coordination. Such an increase in fluorescence made 1 a potential candidate for the detection of a broad-spectrum pesticide, 2,6-dichloro-nitroaniline (DCN). 1 was able to detect DCN efficiently by the fluorescence quenching method with a significant detection limit (1.64 ppm). A combination of static and dynamic quenching was applicable depending on the analyte concentration. The use of silver-carbene bond directed self-assembly to exploit coordination-induced emission as an alternative to AIE in dilute solution and then apply this approach to solve health and safety concerns is noteworthy and carries a lot of potential for future developments.

Pt(II) Tetrafacial Barrel with Aggregation-Induced Emission for Sensing

A new tetraphenylpyrazine-based tetraimidazole ligand (L) was synthesized and used for subcomponent self-assembly with cis-(tmeda)Pd(NO3)2 and cis-Pt(PEt3)2(OTf)2, leading to the formation of two tetrafacial barrels [Pd8L4(tmeda)8](NO3)16 (1) and [Pt8L4(PEt3)16](OTf)16 (2), respectively. Although ligand L is aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active, barrel 2 showed a magnificently higher AIE activity than ligand L, while 1 failed to retain the AIE properties of the ligand. Pd(II) barrel 1, undergoing an aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) phenomenon, nullified the AIE activity of the ligand to be used in the photophysical application. The enhanced emission in the aggregated state of Pt(II) barrel 2 was used for the recognition of picric acid (PA), which is explosive in nature and one of the groundwater contaminants in landmine areas. The recognition of picric acid was found to be selective in comparison with that of other nitroaromatic compounds (NACs), which could be attributed to ground-state complex formation and resonance energy transfer between picric acid and barrel 2. The use of new AIE-active assembly 2 for selective detection of PA with a low detection limit is noteworthy.

A PET and ESIPT-communicated ratiometric, turn-on chromo-fluorogenic sensor for rapid and sensitive detection of sarin gas mimic, diethylchlorophosphate

Fast and precise identification of toxic G-series nerve agents in the solution and vapor phase is urgently needed to save human beings from unwanted wars and terrorist attacks, which is challenging to execute practically. In this article, we have designed and synthesized a sensitive and selective phthalimide-based chromo-fluorogenic sensor, DHAI, by a simple condensation process that shows ratiometric and turns on chromo-fluorogenic behavior towards Sarin gas mimic diethylchlorophosphate (DCP) in liquid and vapor phases, respectively. A colorimetric change, from yellow to colorless, is observed in the DHAI solution due to the introduction of DCP in daylight. A remarkable cyan color photoluminescence enhancement is noticed in the presence of DCP in the DHAI solution, which is observable to the naked under a portable 365 nm UV lamp. The mechanistic aspects of the detection of DCP by employing DHAI have been revealed by time-resolved photoluminescence decay analysis and ¹H NMR titration investigation. Our probe DHAI exhibits linear photoluminescence enhancement from 0 to 500 μM with a detection limit of nanomolar range from non-aqueous to semi-aqueous media. For practical utility, a DHAI-stained test kit employing Whatman-41 filter paper has been fabricated and used as a portable and displayable photonic device for on-site detection of Sarin gas surrogate, DCP. Also, a dip-stick experiment has been demonstrated to identify the vapor of Sarin gas mimics DCP colorimetrically and fluorometrically. The concentrations of DCP in various water samples have been evaluated with the help of a standard fluorescence curve for real sample analysis.

Silver(I)-Carbene Bond-Directed Rigidification-Induced Emissive Metallacage for Picric Acid Detection

A new triphenylamine-based tetraimidazolium salt L was developed for silver(I)-carbene bond-directed synthesis of tetranuclear silver(I) octacarbene ([Ag₄(L)₂](PF₆)₄) metallacage 1. Interestingly, after assembly formation, metallacage 1 showed a nine-fold emission enhancement in dilute solution while ligand L was weakly fluorescent. This is attributed to the rigidity induced to the system by metal-carbene bond formation where the metal center acts as a rigidification unit. The enhanced emission intensity in dilute solution and the presence of the triphenylamine core made 1 a potential candidate for recognition of picric acid (PA). This recognition can be ascribed to the dual effect of ground-state charge-transfer complex formation and resonance energy transfer between the picrate and metallacage 1. For metallacage 1, a considerable detection limit toward PA was observed. The use of such metal-carbene bond-directed rigidification-induced enhanced emission for PA sensing is noteworthy.

A supramolecular Tröger's base derived coordination zinc polymer for fluorescent sensing of phenolic-nitroaromatic explosives in water

A V-Shaped 4-amino-1,8-napthalimide derived tetracarboxylic acid linker (L; bis-[N-(1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid)]-9,18-methano-1,8-naphthalimide-[b,f][1,5]diazocine) comprising the Tröger's base (TB) structural motif was rationally designed and synthesised to access a nitrogen-rich fluorescent supramolecular coordination polymer. By adopting the straight forward precipitation method, a new luminescent nanoscale Zn(ii) coordination polymer (TB-Zn-CP) was synthesized in quantitative yield using Zn(OAc)2·2H2O and tetraacid linker L (1 : 0.5) in DMF at room temperature. The phase-purity of as-synthesised TB-Zn-CP was confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction analysis, infra-red spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Thermogravimetric analysis suggests that TB-Zn-CP is thermally stable up to 330 °C and the morphological features of TB-Zn-CP was analysed by SEM and AFM techniques. The N2 adsorption isotherm of thermally activated TB-Zn-CP at 77 K revealed a type-II reversible adsorption isotherm and the calculated Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area was found to be 72 m2 g-1. Furthermore, TB-Zn-CP displayed an excellent CO2 uptake capacity of 76 mg g-1 at 273 K and good adsorption selectivity for CO2 over N2 and H2. The aqueous suspension of as-synthesized TB-Zn-CP showed strong green fluorescence (λmax = 520 nm) characteristics due to the internal-charge transfer (ICT) transition and was used as a fluorescent sensor for the discriminative sensing of nitroaromatic explosives. The aqueous suspension of TB-Zn-CP showed the largest quenching responses with high selectivity for phenolic-nitroaromatics (4-NP, 2,4-DNP and PA) even in the concurrent presence of other potentially competing nitroaromatic analytes. The fluorescence titration studies also provide evidence that TB-Zn-CP detects picric acid as low as the parts per billion (26.3 ppb) range. Furthermore, the observed fluorescence quenching responses of TB-Zn-CP towards picric acid were highly reversible. The highly selective fluorescence quenching responses including the reversible detection efficiency make the nanoscale coordination polymer TB-Zn-CP a potential material for the discriminative fluorescent sensing of nitroaromatic explosives.

Self-assembled discrete molecules for sensing nitroaromatics

Efficient sensing of trace amount nitroaromatic (NAC) explosives has become a major research focus in recent time due to concerns over national security as well as their role as environment pollutants. NO2 -containing electron-deficient aromatic compounds, such as picric acid (PA), trinitrotoluene (TNT), and dinitrotoluene (DNT), are the common constituents of many commercially available chemical explosives. In this article, we have summarized our recent developments on the rational design of electron-rich self-assembled discrete molecular sensors and their efficacy in sensing nitroaromatics both in solution as well as in vapor phase. Several π-electron-rich fluorescent metallacycles (squares, rectangles, and tweezers/pincers) and metallacages (trigonal and tetragonal prisms) have been synthesized by means of metal-ligand coordination-bonding interactions, with enough internal space to accommodate electron-deficient nitroaromatics at the molecular level by multiple supramolecular interactions. Such interactions subsequently result in the detectable fluorescence quenching of sensors even in the presence of trace quantities of nitroaromatics. The fascinating sensing characteristics of molecular architectures discussed in this article may enable future development of improved sensors for nitroaromatic explosives.

π-Electron rich small molecule sensors for the recognition of nitroaromatics

In this review article we provide an overview of the recent developments made in small molecule-based turn-off fluorescent sensors for nitroaromatic explosives with special focus on organic and H-bonded supramolecular sensors.
