Assessment of executive function impairments in adults with acquired brain injury across single-case experimental design: A scoping review of primary outcomes

The use of single-case experimental design (SCED) to evaluate cognitive remediation is growing. SCEDs require rigorous methodology and appropriate choice of primary outcomes. To review primary outcomes that assess executive function impairments in patients with acquired brain injury (ABI). A scoping review was conducted using the Arksey and O'Malley framework and the PRISMA extension for scoping review (PRISMA-ScR). Five databases were searched resulting in the inclusion of twenty-one studies. Primary outcomes were extracted and classified according to the type of measure, ecological setting and sources of possible bias. A wide variety of primary outcomes were identified; the majority of which evaluated behavioural performance during a real-life activity or in a real-life simulated setting. The most frequent bias observed across outcomes was the coaching effect. The findings of this scoping review highlight the importance of selecting appropriate outcomes for repeated measures in SCED studies. Direct observation of the target behaviour is a potential gold standard for assessing the effectiveness of a cognitive intervention.

Vocabulary Instruction Embedded in Narrative Intervention: A Repeated Acquisition Design Study With First Graders at Risk of Language-Based Reading Difficulty

PURPOSE

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effect of vocabulary instruction embedded in the narrative intervention on the immediate and retained definitional knowledge of taught words for first graders at risk for language-related reading difficulties.

METHOD

We employed a repeated acquisition design with innovative quality features and supplemental statistics with 11 treatment students and three control students. In the context of the school's multitiered system of supports, treatment students received 30-min small group interventions, 4 days a week for 12 weeks. Intervention involved story retelling and personal story generation lessons, both of which emphasized the learning and practicing of target vocabulary words in each story. Pre- and postprobes of the taught definitions were conducted every week.

RESULTS

According to visual analysis conventions of single-case research, there was a consistent pattern of improvement from pre- to postprobes for all treatment participants, but for none of the control participants. Retention was also consistently observed, when measured at Week 13. Supplemental statistics confirmed that large effects were associated with the intervention.

CONCLUSION

Vocabulary instruction embedded in narrative intervention led to meaningful acquisition and retention of taught vocabulary for students at risk of language-based reading difficulty.

Quantitative Analysis of Sexuality and Relationship Education in Inclusive Higher Education: Brief Report

Inclusive postsecondary education (IPSE) programs support adults with intellectual disabilities' participation in higher education. Students in IPSE programs may have limited knowledge of sexuality, relationships, and social skills, which can be addressed through sexuality and relationship education (SRE). This project evaluated the effect of the Positive Choices© curriculum on the SRE knowledge of 7 students attending an IPSE program in the southeastern United States. Students attended 15 weekly classes taught by two graduate assistants and faculty supervisor during spring 2020; half of course meetings occurred in person and half via Zoom due to COVID-19 restrictions. The authors analyzed results of pre-post one sample t-test of student scores on five instructor-created assessments. All students showed statistically significant increases in knowledge for each assessment and overall. Future research should assess the effect of other curricula in use in IPSE programs and evaluate the need for and use of supplemental materials for instruction.

Single-case experimental designs for child neurological rehabilitation and developmental disability research

Single-case experimental designs (SCEDs) are a group of methodologies of growing interest, aiming to test the effectiveness of an intervention at the single-participant level, using a rigorous and prospective methodology. SCEDs may promote flexibility on how we design research protocols and inform clinical decision-making, especially for personalized outcome measures, inclusion of families with challenging needs, measurement of children's progress in relation to parental implementation of interventions, and focus on personal goals. Design options for SCEDs are discussed in relation to an expected on/off effect of the intervention (e.g. school/environmental adaptation, assistive technology devices) or, alternatively, on an expected carry-on/maintenance of effects (interventions aiming to develop or restore a function). Randomization in multiple-baseline designs and 'power' calculations are explained. The most frequent reasons for not detecting an intervention effect in SCEDs are also presented, especially in relation to baseline length, trend, and instability. The use of SCEDs on the front and back ends of randomized controlled trials is discussed.

Examination of a Modified Incremental Rehearsal Approach to Explore Causal Mechanisms

Incremental rehearsal (IR) has consistently been shown to improve students' math fact retention and fluency (Maki et al., Journal of Behavioral Education 30:534-558, 2021). However, less is known about how intervention modifications may support longer-term skill maintenance. The purpose of this study was to compare traditional IR with a modified IR (shuffle IR; ShIR) in which known multiplication facts were shuffled between sequences using a cumulative acquisition design with six fourth- and fifth-grade students. All participants retained and maintained more facts in IR and ShIR compared to a control condition. However, IR or ShIR did not consistently result in greater retention than the other, with three students demonstrating greater retention in the IR condition and three students demonstrating greater retention in the ShIR condition. Most participants demonstrated greater fact maintenance in the ShIR condition than in the IR condition. All participants made fewer intervention session errors in the condition in which they retained more multiplication facts.
