Ligand Engineering in Tin-Based Perovskite Solar Cells

Carboxylic Acid-Assisted Synthesis of Tin(II) Iodide: Key for Stable Large-Area Lead-Free Perovskite Solar Cells

Despite significant progress in tin-based perovskites, the development of stable and high-performance tin-based perovskite solar cells (TPSCs) remains a challenge. In this pursuit, a multitude of strategies have been explored, encompassing the use of reducing agents, antioxidants, bulky cations, and customized solvent systems. We propose an improved approach for synthesizing SnI2 from elemental tin and iodine. Here, we generate tin nanoparticles grafted with a carboxylic acid in situ from tin powder-carboxylic acid-assisted synthesis (CAAS). This methodology not only improves the synthesis process of SnI2 but also enhances precursor stability against oxidation. We use 119Sn MAS NMR to study the atomic-level structure of the resulting FASnI3 thin films and find that the CAAS approach leads to highly pure and unoxidized material. We report remarkable reproducibility in fabricating large-area (1 cm2) flexible TPSCs with significant improvement in open-circuit voltage leading to the champion device showing a power conversion efficiency of 8.35%.

Enabling white color tunability in complex 3D-printed composites by using lead-free self-trapped exciton 2D perovskite/carbon quantum dot inks

The generation of stable white light emission using lead-free perovskites remains a huge challenge in the development of future display and lighting technologies, due to fast material deterioration and the decrease of the color quality. In this work, we report a combination of diverse types of 2D A2SnX4 (A = bulky cation, X = Br, I) perovskites exhibiting self-trapped exciton (STE) emission and blue luminescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs), with the purpose of generating A2SnX4/CQD inks with a broadband emission in the visible region and a tunable white light color. By varying the concentration of the 2D perovskite, the white emission of the mixtures is modulated to cool, neutral, and warm tonalities, with a PL quantum yield up to 45%. From the combinations, the PEA2SnI4/CQD-based ink shows the longest stability, due to suitable surface ligand passivation provided by the capping ligands covering the CQDs, compensating the defect sites in the perovskite. Then, by incorporating the PEA2SnI4/CQDs inks into an acrylate polymer matrix, the quenching of the PL component from the perovskite was restrained, being stable for >400 h under ambient conditions and at a relative humidity of ∼50%, and allowing the preparation of complex 3D-printed composites with stable white emission tonalities. This contribution offers an application of STE-based Sn-perovskites to facilitate the future fabrication of lead-free white-light optoelectronic devices.

Recent Advances in Patterning Strategies for Full-Color Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Metal halide perovskites have emerged as promising light-emitting materials for next-generation displays owing to their remarkable material characteristics including broad color tunability, pure color emission with remarkably narrow bandwidths, high quantum yield, and solution processability. Despite recent advances have pushed the luminance efficiency of monochromic perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) to their theoretical limits, their current fabrication using the spin-coating process poses limitations for fabrication of full-color displays. To integrate PeLEDs into full-color display panels, it is crucial to pattern red-green-blue (RGB) perovskite pixels, while mitigating issues such as cross-contamination and reductions in luminous efficiency. Herein, we present state-of-the-art patterning technologies for the development of full-color PeLEDs. First, we highlight recent advances in the development of efficient PeLEDs. Second, we discuss various patterning techniques of MPHs (i.e., photolithography, inkjet printing, electron beam lithography and laser-assisted lithography, electrohydrodynamic jet printing, thermal evaporation, and transfer printing) for fabrication of RGB pixelated displays. These patterning techniques can be classified into two distinct approaches: in situ crystallization patterning using perovskite precursors and patterning of colloidal perovskite nanocrystals. This review highlights advancements and limitations in patterning techniques for PeLEDs, paving the way for integrating PeLEDs into full-color panels.

Aspartate all-in-one doping strategy enables efficient all-perovskite tandems

All-perovskite tandem solar cells hold great promise in surpassing the Shockley-Queisser limit for single-junction solar cells1-3. However, the practical use of these cells is currently hampered by the subpar performance and stability issues associated with mixed tin-lead (Sn-Pb) narrow-bandgap perovskite subcells in all-perovskite tandems4-7. In this study, we focus on the narrow-bandgap subcells and develop an all-in-one doping strategy for them. We introduce aspartate hydrochloride (AspCl) into both the bottom poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) and bulk perovskite layers, followed by another AspCl posttreatment. We show that a single AspCl additive can effectively passivate defects, reduce Sn4+ impurities and shift the Fermi energy level. Additionally, the strong molecular bonding of AspCl-Sn/Pb iodide and AspCl-AspCl can strengthen the structure and thereby improve the stability of Sn-Pb perovskites. Ultimately, the implementation of AspCl doping in Sn-Pb perovskite solar cells yielded power conversion efficiencies of 22.46% for single-junction cells and 27.84% (27.62% stabilized and 27.34% certified) for tandems with 95% retention after being stored in an N2-filled glovebox for 2,000 h. These results suggest that all-in-one AspCl doping is a favourable strategy for enhancing the efficiency and stability of single-junction Sn-Pb perovskite solar cells and their tandems.

Novel Chiral CsPbBr3 Metal Halide Perovskite Magic-Sized Clusters and Metal Halide Molecular Clusters with Achiral Ligands

We have synthesized inherently chiral cesium lead halide perovskite magic-sized clusters (PMSCs) and ligand-assisted metal halide molecular clusters (MHMCs) using the achiral ligands octanoic acid (OCA) and octylamine (OCAm). UV-vis electronic absorption was used to confirm characteristic absorption bands while circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy was utilized to determine their chiroptical activity in the 412-419 and 395-405 nm regions, respectively. In contrast, the larger sized counterpart of PMSCs, namely, perovskite quantum dots (PQDs), do not show chirality. The inherent chirality of the clusters is tentatively attributed to a twisted chiral layered structure, defect-induced chiral structure, or twisted Pb-Br octahedra.
