Task-Specific Properties and Prospects of Ionic Liquids in Cross-Coupling Reactions

A kinetics study of copper-catalysed click reactions in ionic liquids

Copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reactions are of extensive interest in chemical synthesis. While the use of ionic liquids (ILs) as solvents for synthesis has been widely explored in recent years, the understanding of their influence on the mechanism and reactivity of CuAAC reactions remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate the kinetics of a phenylacetylene-benzylazide and acetylene-benzylazide CuAAC reaction to probe the influence of IL structure, including the role of the base used to promote the reaction and the importance of water content. The use of 'wet' ILs led to remarkable changes in the kinetic profile of the reaction by eliminating the initial induction period. The reaction rate was found to be dependent on the copper(I) source. The effect of an added base was also studied, with the use of a tertiary amine-bearing IL leading to high conversions in under 5 min at ambient temperature. The results of this study highlight the nature and complexity of CuAAC reactions in ILs. As more ILs are getting involved in industrial processes, the data obtained from this study are valuable for better understanding processes that affect the CuAAC reaction in IL media and for creating customized systems for organic synthesis, thus improving the efficiency and sustainability of such processes.

Insights into structure-property relationships in ionic liquids using cyclic perfluoroalkylsulfonylimides

Room temperature ionic liquids of cyclic sulfonimide anions ncPFSI (ring size: n = 4-6) with the cations [EMIm]+ (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium), [BMIm]+ (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) and [BMPL]+ (BMPL = 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium) have been synthesized. Their solid-state structures have been elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and their physicochemical properties (thermal behaviour and stability, dynamic viscosity and specific conductivity) have been assessed. In addition, the ion diffusion was studied by pulsed field gradient stimulated echo (PFGSTE) NMR spectroscopy. The decisive influence of the ring size of the cyclic sulfonimide anions on the physicochemical properties of the ILs has been revealed. All ILs show different properties compared to those of the non-cyclic TFSI anion. While these differences are especially distinct for ILs with the very rigid 6cPFSI anion, the 5-membered ring anion 5cPFSI was found to result in ILs with relatively similar properties. The difference between the properties of the TFSI anion and the cyclic sulfonimide anions has been rationalized by the rigidity (conformational lock) of the cyclic sulfonimide anions. The comparison of selected IL properties was augmented by MD simulations. These highlight the importance of π+-π+ interactions between pairs of [EMIm]+ cations in the liquid phase. The π+-π+ interactions are evident for the solid state from the molecular structures of the [EMIm]+-ILs with the three cyclic imide anions determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Cyano(fluoro)borate and cyano(hydrido)borate ionic liquids: low-viscosity ionic media for electrochemical applications

The synthesis and detailed characterization of low-viscosity room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) and [BnPh₃P]⁺ salts with the cyano(fluoro)borate anions [BF(CN)₃]^- (MFB), [BF₂(CN)₂]^- (DFB), and [BF₃(CN)]^- as well as the new mixed-substituted anion [BFH(CN)₂]^- (FHB) is described. The RTILs with [EMIm]⁺ or [BMPL]⁺ as countercations were obtained in yields of up to 98% from readily available alkali metal salts and in high purities that allow application in electrochemical devices. Trends in thermal stability, melting and freezing behavior, density, electrochemical stability, dynamic viscosity, specific conductivity and ion diffusivity have been assessed and compared to those of the related tetracyanoborate- and cyano(hydrido)borate-RTILs. The crystal structure analysis of the [BnPh₃P]⁺ salts of [BF_n(CN)_4-n]^- (n = 0-4), [BH_n(CN)_4-n]^- (n = 1-3) and [BFH(CN)₂]^- provided experimental access to anion volumina that together with ion molecular mass, electrostatic potential, shape and chemical stability have been correlated to physicochemical properties. In addition, the cytotoxicity of the [EMIm]⁺-ILs and potassium or sodium salts was studied.

A Green Route to Benzyl Phenyl Sulfide from Thioanisole and Benzyl Alcohol over Dual Functional Ionic Liquids

Benzyl phenyl sulfide is a kind of important chemicals with wide usage, which is mainly prepared through a nucleophilic reaction of thiophenol with benzyl chlorides or benzyl alcohols, suffering from inherent drawbacks, such as low efficiency, requirements for equivalent acid or base catalysts and formation of harmful byproducts and waste. Herein, we report a green route to access various benzyl phenyl sulfide derivatives in good to excellent yields under mild conditions via the reaction of thioanisoles with benzyl alcohols over ionic liquid 1-propylsulfonate-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([SO₃ HPrMIm][OTf]). Mechanism investigation indicates that the synergic effect of cation and anion of [SO₃ HPrMIm][OTf] activates thioanisoles and benzyl alcohols via hydrogen bonding, thus catalyzes the dehydration of benzyl alcohol to dibenzyl ether and the subsequent metathesis reaction between dibenzyl ether and benzyl phenyl sulfide, finally generating benzyl phenyl sulfide derivatives. This is a simple, highly efficient, and green approach to produce benzyl phenyl sulfide derivatives, which has promising application potentials.

Copper-Catalyzed Reactions of Aryl Halides with N-nucleophiles and Their Possible Application for Degradation of Halogenated Aromatic Contaminants

This review summarizes recent applications of copper or copper-based compounds as a nonprecious metal catalyst in N-nucleophiles-based dehalogenation (DH) reactions of halogenated aromatic compounds (Ar-Xs). Cu-catalyzed DH enables the production of corresponding nonhalogenated aromatic products (Ar-Nu), which are much more biodegradable and can be mineralized during aerobic wastewater treatment or which are principally further applicable. Based on available knowledge, the developed Cu-based DH methods enable the utilization of amines for effective cleavage of aryl-halogen bonds in organic solvents or even in an aqueous solution.

The Influence of the Nature of Redox-Active Moieties on the Properties of Redox-Active Ionic Liquids and on Their Use as Electrolyte for Supercapacitors

In this work, two new redox-active ionic liquids, one based on 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxide and the other based on 4,4′-bipyridine, are synthesized and characterized. A ferrocene-based redox-active ionic liquid is used for referencing the results. All ionic liquids are formed via salt-metathesis from halogenate to bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide. Their fundamental thermal characteristics are assessed with differential scanning calorimetry. While the imidazolium ionic liquids show no melting point, the phase transition is well observable for the viologen-based ionic liquid. The properties of the neat redox-active ionic liquids and of binary mixtures containing these ionic liquids (0.1 m) and 1-butyl-1-methyl pyrrolidinium-bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide have been investigated. Finally, the use of these binary mixtures in combination with activated carbon-based electrodes has been considered in view of the use of these redox-active electrolytes in supercapacitors.

Ultrasonic-Assisted Ionic Liquid Extraction of Two Biflavonoids from Selaginella tamariscina

Selaginella tamariscina, a traditional Chinese medicine, contains a variety of bioactive components, among which biflavonoids are the main active ingredients and have antioxidant, antitumor, and anti-inflammatory properties. In this study, ultrasonic-assisted ionic liquid extraction (UAILE) is used for the first time to extract two main biflavonoids (amentoflavone (AME) and hinokiflavone (HIN)) from S. tamariscina. A high-performance liquid chromatography method is used for the simultaneous determination of AME and HIN in S. tamariscina. Then, three novel ILs are synthesized for the first time by a one-step method using benzoxazole and three acids or acid salts as raw materials, and the structures of the synthesized ILs are characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and NMR spectroscopy, as well as the thermal stability of the ILs is evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis. After screening the extraction effects of three benzoxazole ILs, three pyridine ILs, and three imidazole ILs, it is found that [Bpy]BF4 is the best and therefore selected as the extractant. The optimal extraction process is explored in terms of the yields of AME and HIN from S. tamariscina by a single-factor experiments and response surface analysis. Under the optimal level of each influencing factor (IL concentration of 0.15 mol/L, solid-liquid ratio of 1:12 g/mL, ultrasonic power of 280 W, ultrasonic time of 30 min, and three extraction cycles), the extraction rates of AME and HIN from S. tamariscina are 13.51 and 6.74 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, the recovery experiment of [Bpy]BF4 on the extraction of biflavonoids shows that the recovered IL can repeatedly extract targets six times and the extraction rate is about 90%, which indicates that the IL can be effectively reused. UAILE can effectively and selectively extract AME and HIN, laying the foundation for the application of S. tamariscina.

Highly Luminescent 4H-1,2,4-Triazole Derivatives: Synthesis, Molecular Structure and Photophysical Properties

An alternative approach to the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction is used to synthesize a series of new luminophores based on 4-alkyl-4H-1,2,4-triazole cores conjugated via 1,4-phenylene linker to fused-bicyclic and tricyclic aromatic, or heteroaromatic arrangements. The described methodology allows one to conduct the coupling reaction with the use of commercially available boronic acids in the presence of conventional solvents or ionic liquids and produced excellent yields. It was found that the use of ultrasounds or microwaves significantly accelerates the reaction. The obtained compounds exhibited high luminescent properties and a large quantum yield of emitted photons. The X-ray molecular structures of three highly conjugated 4H-1,2,4-triazole representatives are also presented.

Tetrabutylphosphonium 4-ethoxyvalerate as a biomass-originated media for homogeneous palladium-catalyzed Hiyama coupling reactions

The introduction of a biomass-derived ionic liquid into the Hiyama coupling reactions, which has been considered as a powerful tool for the synthesis of symmetrically and non-symmetrically substituted biaryl structures, could further control or even reduce the environmental impact of this transformation. It was shown that tetrabutylphosphonium 4-ethoxyvalerate, a γ-valerolactone-based ionic liquid, can be utilized as an alternative solvent to create carbon–carbon bonds between aryl iodides and functionalized organosilanes in the presence of 1 mol% Pd under typical Hiyama conditions (130 °C, 24 h, tetrabutylammonium fluoride activator). A comparison of different ionic liquids was performed, and the effects of the catalyst precursor and the moisture content of the reaction mixture on the activity of the catalyst system were investigated. The functional group tolerance was also studied, resulting in 15 cross-coupling products (3a–o) with isolated yields of 45–72% and excellent purity (> 98%).
