Ion chromatographic determination of selenite and selenate with selenium-specific detection by flame and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry

Capillary electrophoresis on-line coupled with hydride generation-atomic fluorescence spectrometry for speciation analysis of selenium

A new method for speciation analysis of two inorganic selenium species was developed by on-line coupling of capillary electrophoresis (CE) with hydride generation-atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS) and on-line conversion of Se(VI) to Se(IV). Baseline separation of Se(VI) and Se(IV) was achieved by CE in a 50 cm x 75 microm inside diameter (ID) fused-silica capillary at -20 kV using a mixture of 15 mmol.L(-1) NaH2PO4 and 0.5 mmol.L(-1) cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (pH 7.5) as electrolyte buffer. Se(VI) was on-line reduced to Se(IV) by mixing the CE effluent with concentrated HCl. The precision (relative standard deviation, RSD, n=7) ranged from 0.7 to 1.3% for migration time, 6.4 to 3.7% for peak height response, and 5.9 to 6.1% for peak area for the two selenium species at the 500 microg.L(-1) (as Se) level. The detection limits were 33 and 25 microg.L(-1) (as Se) for Se(VI) and Se(IV), respectively. The recoveries of the two selenium species in five locally collected water samples ranged from 88 to 114%. The developed method was applied to speciation analysis of inorganic selenium species in spiked natural water samples.

Ion chromatographic preconcentration of Cu and Cd from ultra-high-purity water and determination by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry

A method based on preconcentration of Cu and Cd from ultra-high-purity water by ion chromatography (IC) and determination by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry is described. A small low-capacity ion-exchange concentrator Dionex HPIC-CG5 and mobile phase of 3 mM pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (PDCA) are used. Water samples are loaded onto the preconcentration column at a flow-rate ranging from 1 to 3.5 ml min(-1). Large sample volumes (up to 200 ml) can be loaded onto the concentrator without losing metal ions. Elution is carried out in the reverse direction of sample loading and the volumes of effluent are as small as 0.150 and 0.200 ml for copper and cadmium, respectively. Under these conditions the preconcentrated ions coelute. The detection limits, based on the Hubaux-Vos method, for Cu using a 1300-fold preconcentration in the IC step was found to be 1 pg ml(-1), and was limited due to impurity in PDCA, while the detection limit found for Cd using a 1000-fold preconcentration was 0.02 pg ml(-1). Ultra-high-purity water produced by a Millipore system is successfully analysed by the proposed method and the content of Cu and Cd are found to lie in the range 1-10 pg ml(-1).

Chromatographic and hyphenated methods for elemental speciation analysis in environmental media

This review discusses chromatographic techniques that permit the analysis of speciated metals in the environment using conventional detectors, such as UV, and element-specific detectors, such as flame atomic absorption spectrometry, electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The importance of determining precise elemental forms in hazardous waste-contaminated soil, water and biota in terms of toxicity is outlined. Previous reviews on this subject are described and recent research on this subject is discussed. Most of the work cited has been performed in the 1990s and a table summarizing the chromatographic method and the detector system used, including brief comments on the work, is included to enable quick reference.

Determination of selenite, selenate and selenomethionine by ion chromatography, microwave digestion and HGAAS

An on-line system for the simultaneous determination of Se(IV), Se(VI) and selenomethionine (Se-Met) in aqueous samples was developed, consisting of separation by ion chromatography, microwave digestion and detection by hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry. 8.3 mmol/l Na(2)HPO(4) (pH 9.2) was used as mobile phase for the ion chromatography, with a flow-rate of 1.5 ml/min. After the separation the sample was mixed with concentrated KBr-HCl solution and heated with microwave energy to digest Se-Met and reduce Se(VI) to Se(IV). The detection limits were 15 microg/l, 12 microg/l and 103 microg/l for Se(IV), Se(VI) and Se-Met, respectively.
