Familial tooth bone graft for ridge and sinus augmentation: a report of two cases

Recently, clinical application of autogenous tooth bone-graft materials has been reported. Autogenous tooth bone graft has been used in implant surgery. Familial tooth bone graft is a more advanced procedure than autogenous teeth bone graft in that extracted teeth can be used for bone graft materials of implant and teeth donation between siblings is possible. We used autogenous tooth and familial tooth bone-graft materials for ridge augmentation and sinus bone graft and obtained satisfactory results. The cases are presented herein.

Characterization of dentin formed in transplanted rat molars by electron probe microanalysis

The present study was designed to characterize dentin formed in transplanted rat molars by investigating calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and magnesium (Mg) concentrations using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) as well as examining the rate of dentin matrix formation by vital staining. The unerupted immature lower right second molar in 2-week-old rats was transplanted into the upper right first molar socket. Rats were injected with oxytetracycline, calcein, and alizarin intraperitoneally at 1 day before and 1 and 2 weeks after transplantation, respectively, for vital staining. The maxillae and mandibles were fixed 3 weeks after transplantation, resected, and embedded in resin. Undemineralized sections were cut and examined by fluorescent microscopy and EPMA. The thickness of dentin formed in the first week after transplantation was significantly less than that of dentin formed in any other 1-week period in the transplanted tooth and was about one-fifth the thickness of dentin formed in control teeth. Formation of dentin recovered in the third week after transplantation. In the first week after transplantation, EPMA demonstrated a sharp increase in Mg concentration with a slight decrease in Ca concentration. Thereafter, no significant difference was identified among Ca, P, or Mg concentrations or the Ca/P ratio between transplanted and control teeth. These results suggest that disruption of the circulation and innervation by transplantation cause a temporary change in the matrix formation rate and elemental distribution of dentin, which is subsequently restored within 2 weeks after transplantation.

[The prognosis of autologous tooth transplants in orthodontic treatment planning]

Autogenous tooth transplantation is an alternative treatment for preserving continuity of the dental arch following early loss of teeth. The prognosis of transplants determines the indication as compared with other methods of space closure. Transplanted buds of upper premolars as well as of lower third molars continue their root growth. The clinical and roentgenological analysis of 81 autogenously transplanted upper canines, following different operative procedures, indicates, that 50% of the transplants remain in situ for five years and only 25% remain in situ longer than six years. The statistical chances of survival of vitally transplanted, apicoectomied teeth are more favourable. Short-term prognosis is determined by inflammatory bone and/or tooth resorption due to odontogenic infection or occlusal trauma. Long-time prognosis is determined by different forms of tooth resorption. Regular radiographic examination as reveal early odontogenic infections which can then be treated endodontically. The doubtful prognosis necessitates strict indications.

A clinical and radiographic evaluation of cultivated and autotransplanted human teeth

A vital periodontal membrane (PDM) is of ultimate importance for a successful periodontal healing of auto-transplanted teeth. It has been suggested that a damaged PDM may heal during an intermediate tissue culture period. In the present study, 26 canines, bicuspids and third molars were surgically removed and cultivated in a modified Eagle's medium for 3 to 17 weeks. The teeth were then transplanted to their new positions. 11 out of 18 (61%) transplanted teeth with complete root formation and 7 out of 8 (88%) transplanted teeth with incomplete root formation healed with an apparently normal periodontal ligament. 5 teeth, all canines, became ankylotic. Tissue cultivation of teeth to be transplanted resulted in approximately the same healing rate as has been reported for autotransplanted teeth without the tissue culture procedure.
