Abstract
This investigation aimed to assess the influence of birth weight on post-weaning fattening performance, meat quality, muscle fibre characteristics, and carcass traits in Karayaka lambs. The study categorized the lambs into three distinct groups based on birth weight: low birth weight (LBW), medium birth weight (MBW), and high birth weight (HBW). Throughout the fattening phase, the lambs were given ad libitum access to food and water, culminating in the slaughter at the end of the study. Following slaughter, warm and cold carcasses were weighted, and specific muscles (longissimus thoracis et lumborum [LTL], semitendinosus [ST], and semimembranosus [SM]) were isolated for the evaluation of muscle weights, muscle fibre types (Type I, Type IIA, and Type IIB), and muscle fibre numbers. Carcass characteristics were also determined, including eye muscle (LTL) fat, loin thickness, and meat quality characteristics, such as pH, colour, texture, cooking loss, and water-holding capacity. The statistical analysis revealed highly significant differences among the experimental groups concerning muscle weights and warm and cold carcass weights (p < 0.01), with the lambs in the HBW group exhibiting a notably higher carcass yield (in females: 45.65 ± 1.34% and in males: 46.18 ± 0.77%) and LTL, ST, and SM (except for female lambs) muscle weights than the lambs in LBW group (p < 0.01). However, apart from the texture of LTL and ST muscles, no significant differences in meat quality parameters were observed among the treatment groups (p > 0.05). Notably, the birth weight of lambs did not impart a discernible effect on the total number and metabolic activity of muscle fibres in LTL, ST, and SM muscles. Nonetheless, a noteworthy distinction in the fibre area of Type I fibres in the LTL muscle of male lambs (LBW: 30.4 ± 8.9, MBW: 29.1 ± 7.3 and HBW; 77.3 ± 15.4) and in the ST muscle of female lambs (LBW: 44.1 ± 8.1, MBW: 38.8 ± 7.7 and HBW: 36.9 ± 7.1) were evident among the birth weight groups (p < 0.05). The study also found that the mean fat thickness values of eye muscles in Karayaka lambs, as obtained by ultrasonic tests, were below the typical range for sheep. In synthesis, the outcomes of this study underscore the considerable impact of birth weight on slaughtered and carcass weights, emphasizing the positive association between higher birth weights and enhanced carcass yield. Remarkably, despite these pronounced effects on carcass traits, the birth weight did not demonstrate a statistically significant influence on meat quality or overall muscle fibre characteristics, except for the area of Type I fibres in the LTL muscle. This nuanced understanding contributes valuable insights into the intricate relationship between birth weight and various physiological and carcass parameters in Karayaka lambs undergoing post-weaning fattening.

Abstract
Simple Summary Firmly squeezing the chests of newborn foals and calves that are showing abnormal behaviours after birth causes them to enter a less-responsive state, characterised by lying down with eyes closed and no limb movements. Once the squeeze is removed, the newborns immediately ‘wake up’ and begin to display more normal behaviours. This response to the thoracic squeeze has also been observed in healthy, normally behaving foals. However, no studies have looked at the effects of the thoracic squeeze in healthy newborns of other mammalian species. We aimed to characterise the behavioural responses of healthy newborn piglets to a thoracic squeeze using the following two methods: a soft fabric rope, or a purpose-made inflation cuff. Behavioural data indicated that all piglets initially became less responsive, with reduced or absent reflex responses to a toe pinch or touch of the eyelid observed in over half of the piglets. The piglets squeezed with the inflation cuff appeared to enter a less-responsive state faster than the piglets squeezed with the rope. These findings suggest that the piglets responded to the thoracic squeeze in a similar way to healthy foals and that this may be a response conserved across multiple precocial mammalian species. Furthermore, the squeeze was found to be safe for inducing a less-responsive state in healthy piglets. This study provides a foundation for exploring the mechanisms underlying the responses to the thoracic squeeze and potential applications whilst performing husbandry procedures. Abstract A thoracic squeeze has been observed to cause both healthy and low vigour neonatal foals to enter a ‘less-responsive state’, characterised by loss of posture, eye closure and cessation of movement, from which they rapidly recover to express normal healthy behaviours when the squeeze is released. To date, there have been no systematic studies characterising the responses of healthy neonates of other mammalian species to a thoracic squeeze. We describe the responses of healthy newborn piglets (n = 17) to a standardised application of the thoracic squeeze and evaluate the effect of the method of squeeze application on the response. Neonatal piglets were squeezed around the chest with either a soft fabric rope as has been used in foals (n = 8) or a novel purpose-made inflation cuff (n = 9). Both methods were effective at inducing a less-responsive behavioural state in all piglets, with neural reflexes reduced or absent in over half of them. The inflation cuff appeared to induce the less-responsive state faster than the rope, and more piglets squeezed with the cuff remained in this state for the full 10-min squeeze. These findings suggest that the behavioural response of foals to thoracic squeezing can be generalised to neonates of other precocial mammalian species. This initial study provides a foundation for further research using the inflation cuff to explore mechanisms underlying the thoracic squeeze and ways in which it may be applied whilst performing husbandry procedures.

Abstract
Adverse weather conditions are important contributors to mortality in new-born lambs. Previous studies have shown variation between lambs in their ability to cope with circumstances of cold stress, and genetic selection could be a viable option for improving animal robustness. The Elsenburg Merino flock was divergently selected on number of lambs weaned (NLW). This resulted in divergent responses in reproduction and lamb survival. This study evaluated lamb vitality and mortality of positively selected H-Line relative to the negatively selected L-Line in response to cold stress. Traits included lamb rectal temperature (RT), surface temperature (ST), shiver score (SS), lamb vigor score (LVS), breaths per minute (BPM), mortality to three days of age (M3) and to weaning (TM). Cold stress was described by a chill index derived from daily rainfall, wind speed and ambient temperature, and represented as the mean of the one (CI), two (CI-2) or three (CI-3) days since parturition. Overall, H-Line lambs had a higher neonatal RT and were less likely to succumb than L-Line contemporaries. In a significant (P < 0.05) interaction, the predicted RT of L-Line showed a non-linear decline with increased levels of CI-2, while H-Line lambs better maintained their core temperature. M3 was also affected by a significant interaction between CI-3 and selection line, further suggesting that observed lower mortality rates in the H-Line depends on H-Line lambs' improved ability to cope with stressful environments. Long term selection for NLW in the H-Line led to improvements in both adaptations associated with lower lamb losses. The continued recording of viability traits to produce larger datasets amenable to genetic analysis is recommended, specifically for rectal temperature.

Abstract
Both maternal and fetal genotypes contribute to conceptus development. The objective was to determine how placentome number, size, and type and fetal weight was influenced after reciprocal embryo transfer in Columbia and Romanov sheep. Reciprocal embryo transfer was conducted between Columbia and Romanov ewes where a single embryo was transferred into Romanov and Columbia recipients [Romanov embryo in a Romanov uterus (RinR, n = 9); Romanov embryo in a Columbia uterus (RinC, n = 7); Columbia embryo in a Columbia uterus (CinC, n = 8); Columbia embryo in a Romanov uterus (CinR, n = 4)]. On day 130 of gestation, fetuses were weighed and placentomes were morphologically typed, weighed, and measured. Regardless of maternal genotype, Romanov fetuses were smaller (P < 0.05) compared to Columbia fetuses. Moreover, CinC fetuses were larger (P < 0.05) than CinR fetuses. There was a tendency (P = 0.12) for a fetal by maternal genotype interaction on total placentome weight, but main effects were significant for fetal genotype (P = 0.04) and maternal genotype (P < 0.01). The number of Type A placentomes was greater than any other types. Type A placentomes had a greater (P < 0.05) contribution to total placentome weight within the Romanov uterus, or when associated with a Romanov fetus, than within the Columbia breed, in which placentome type was evenly distributed. The hypothesis that the Romanov uterus would limit the growth of a Columbia conceptus is accepted; however, the Romanov conceptus did not experience augmented growth when transferred into a Columbia uterus as predicted.

Abstract
The subtropical monsoon climate characterized by high or low temperature and humidity can induce cold and heat stress for newborn animals, which results in adverse effect on birth weight and even pre-weaning mortality. However, this early growth performance on indigenous goats is affected by cold and heat climatic environments and is still unclear in subtropical climate. In this study, we continuously measured (July 2011 to June 2016) the birth weight and mortality of an indigenous goat species (n = 530), and collected temperature, humidity, temperature-humidity index (THI) in original farming area, Chongqing, southwest China. As the result, the mean birth weights in cold months (January and February, mean temperature < 10 °C and THI < 56) and heat months (July and August, mean temperature > 29 °C and THI > 76) were significantly lower (P < 0.05) compared to the other months (June and October, mean temperature = 16~25 °C and THI = 61~75). Meanwhile, the birth weight was positively correlated (P < 0.01) with gestational THI from November to May, and was negatively correlated (P < 0.01) with those parameters from June to October, respectively. The maximum pre-weaning mortality, occurring in the 1st month after birth, is 16.17 ± 2.56%. However, when the birth weight was 20% lower than annual average (2.09 ± 0.54 kg), the mortality was significantly enhanced (P < 0.01) to 46%. In addition, cold and heat climates respectively enhanced mortality in the 1st month and 2nd~4th months after birth. In conclusion, annually chronic heat and cold climates could play important roles in lowering birth weight and their survival in subtropical monsoon region. Low birth weight and cold temperature play critical role to contribute the advent of higher mortality after birth. Our results potentially provide the appropriate ranges of temperature (16~26 °C) and THI (61~75) as pregnant goat and kids raising condition to avoid these negative influences.

Abstract
Presented is an updated understanding of the development of sensory systems in the offspring of a wide range of terrestrial mammals, the prenatal exposure of those systems to salient stimuli, and the mechanisms by which that exposure can embed particular sensory capabilities that prepare newborns to respond appropriately to similar stimuli they may encounter after birth. Taken together, these are the constituents of the phenomenon of "trans-natal sensory continuity" where the embedded sensory capabilities are considered to have been "learnt" and, when accessed subsequently, they are said to have been "remembered". An alternative explanation of trans-natal sensory continuity is provided here in order to focus on the mechanisms of "embedding" and "accessing" instead of the potentially more subjectively conceived outcomes of "learning" and "memory". Thus, the mechanistic concept of "intrauterine sensory entrainment" has been introduced, its foundation being the well-established neuroplastic capability of nervous systems to respond to sensory inputs by reorganising their neural structures, functions, and connections. Five conditions need to be met before "trans-natal sensory continuity" can occur. They are (1) sufficient neurological maturity to support minimal functional activity in specific sensory receptor systems in utero; (2) the presence of sensory stimuli that activate their aligned receptors before birth; (3) the neurological capability for entrained functions within specific sensory modalities to be retained beyond birth; (4) specific sensory stimuli that are effective both before and after birth; and (5) a capability to detect those stimuli when or if they are presented after birth in ways that differ (e.g., in air) from their presentation via fluid media before birth. Numerous beneficial outcomes of this process have been reported for mammalian newborns, but the range of benefits depends on how many of the full set of sensory modalities are functional at the time of birth. Thus, the breadth of sensory capabilities may be extensive, somewhat restricted, or minimal in offspring that are, respectively, neurologically mature, moderately immature, or exceptionally immature at birth. It is noted that birth marks a transition from intrauterine sensory entrainment to extrauterine sensory entrainment in all mammalian young. Depending on their neurological maturity, extrauterine entrainment contributes to the continuing maturation of the different sensory systems that are operational at birth, the later development and maturation of the systems that are absent at birth, and the combined impact of those factors on the behaviour of newborn and young mammals. Intrauterine sensory entrainment helps to prepare mammalian young for life immediately after birth, and extrauterine sensory entrainment continues this process until all sensory modalities develop full functionality. It is apparent that, overall, extrauterine sensory entrainment and its aligned neuroplastic responses underlie numerous postnatal learning and memory events which contribute to the maturation of all sensory capabilities that eventually enable mammalian young to live autonomously.

Abstract
Horses are a precocious species that must accomplish several milestones that are critical to survival in the immediate post-birth period for their survival. One essential milestone is the successful transition from the intrauterine unconsciousness to an extrauterine state of consciousness or awareness. This transition involves a complex withdrawal of consciousness inhibitors and an increase in neuroactivating factors that support awareness. This process involves neuroactive hormones as well as inputs related to factors such as cold, visual, olfactory, and auditory stimuli. One factor not previously considered in this birth transition is a yet unreported direct neural reflex response to labor-induced physical compression of the fetus in the birth canal (squeezing). Neonatal maladjustment syndrome (NMS) is a disorder of the newborn foal characterized by altered behavior, low affinity for the mare, poor awareness of the environment, failure to bond to the mother, abnormal sucking, and other neurologically-based abnormalities. This syndrome has been associated with altered events during birth, and was believed to be caused exclusively by hypoxia and ischemia. However, recent findings revealed an association of the NMS syndrome with the persistence of high concentrations of in utero neuromodulating hormones (neurosteroids) in the postnatal period. Anecdotal evidence demonstrated that a novel physical compression (squeeze) method that applies 20 min of sustained pressure to the thorax of some neonatal foals with this syndrome might rapidly hasten recovery. This survey provides information about outcomes and time frames to recovery comparing neonatal foals that were given this squeeze treatment to foals treated with routine medical therapy alone. Results revealed that the squeeze procedure, when applied for 20 min, resulted in a faster full recovery of some foals diagnosed with NMS. The adjunctive use of a non-invasive squeeze method may improve animal welfare by hastening recovery and foal-mare interactions that minimize health problems. This would also avoid or reduce costs arising from hospitalization associated with veterinary and nursing care that sometimes leads owners to elect for euthanasia.

Abstract
This paper focuses on the development of behaviours that are critical for the survival of newborn and juvenile mammals of veterinary and wider biological interest. It provides an updated, integrated and comparative analysis of how postnatal maturation of sensory, motor and perceptual capacities support and constrain behavioural interactions between mammalian young and the mother, any littermates and the environment. Young that are neurologically exceptionally immature, moderately immature and mature at birth are compared, and include, for example, marsupial joeys, rodent pups and ruminant offspring. Mothers in these three groups exhibit distinctive patterns of birthing and postnatal care behaviours. To secure survival of the young, maternal care must compensate for behavioural inadequacies imposed by the limited sensory capacities the young possess at each stage. These sensory capacities develop in a predictable sequence in most mammals such that before birth the sequence progresses to an extent that parallels the degree of neurological maturity reached at birth. The extent of neurological maturity is likewise reflected in how long it takes after birth for the necessary brain circuit connectivity to develop sufficiently to support cortically based cognitive modulation of behaviour. This takes several months, days-to-weeks or minutes-to-hours in young that are, respectively, neurologically exceptionally immature, moderately immature, or mature at birth. Once achieved, cognitive awareness confers a high degree of behavioural flexibility that allows the young to respond more effectively to the unpredictability of their postnatal environments. It is shown that the onset of this cognitively based flexibility in the young of each group coincides with their first exposure to a variable environment that requires such behavioural flexibility.

Abstract
In sheep production systems based on extensive grazing, neonatal mortality often reaches 15% to 20% of lambs born, and the mortality rate can be doubled in the case of multiple births. An important contributing factor is the nutrition of the mother because it affects the amount of colostrum available at birth. Ewes carrying multiple lambs have higher energy requirements than ewes carrying a single lamb and this problem is compounded by limitations to voluntary feed intake as the gravid uterus compresses the rumen. This combination of factors means that the nutritional requirements of the ewe carrying multiple lambs can rarely be met by the supply of pasture alone. This problem can overcome by supplementation with energy during the last week of pregnancy, a treatment that increases colostrum production and also reduces colostrum viscosity, making it easier for the neonatal lamb to suck. In addition, litter size and nutrition both accelerate the decline in concentration of circulating progesterone that, in turn, triggers the onsets of both birth and lactogenesis, and thus ensures the synchrony of these two events. Furthermore, the presence of colostrum in the gut of the lamb increases its ability to recognize its mother, and thus improves mother-young bonding. Most cereal grains that are rich in energy in the form of starch, when used as supplements in late pregnancy will increase colostrum production by 90% to 185% above control (unsupplemented) values. Variation among types of cereal grain in the response they induce may be due to differences in the amount of starch digested post-ruminally. As a percentage of grain dry matter intake, the amount of starch entering the lower digestive tract is 14% for maize, 8.5% for barley and 2% for oats. Supplements of high quality protein from legumes and oleiferous seeds can also increase colostrum production but they are less effective than cereal grains. In conclusion, short-term supplementation before parturition, particularly with energy-rich concentrates, can improve colostrum production, help meet the energy and immunological requirements for new-born lambs, and improve lamb survival.

Abstract
Legal protection of the welfare of prenatal animals has not previously been addressed as a discrete subject within the academic literature on animal welfare, ethics and law. This paper aims to rectify this by reviewing the protections (or absence of protections) provided for fetuses by existing legislation in various jurisdictions, and considering the extent to which legal protection of animal fetuses can be justified on animal welfare grounds. Questions related to the need to protect the welfare of neurologically immature postnatal animals are also considered. We argue that there are reasons to protect animal fetuses, both in order to protect fetuses themselves against possible suffering, and in order to protect the animals which fetuses will become against negative welfare impacts that originate prenatally. We review the science on whether fetuses can suffer, and argue that extant regulations do not fully reflect current scientific understanding. Following the precautionary principle, we further argue that regulators should consider the possibility that foetuses and neurologically immature postnatal animals may suffer due to subcortically based 'raw basic affects' (i.e. relatively undifferentiated experiences of discomfort suggested to be generated by neural processing at levels below the cerebral cortex). Furthermore we show that there are reasons for affording fetuses protection in order to safeguard the long-term welfare of future animals. However, it may be possible to provide such protection via rules or laws relating to the use of certain techniques and the management of pregnant animals, rather than via direct legal protection of fetuses themselves. In order to provide such protection effectively we need to know more about the relationship between maternal nutrition, stress, exercise, management and fetal health, and about the impact of the timing of a fetal insult on long-term postnatal welfare.

Abstract
The relationship between placental traits and maternal intrinsic factors of Saanen, German Fawn and Damascus goats was investigated. Data was collected from 93 goats. The results of the study demonstrated that there were positive correlations between placental weight (PW) and cotyledon number (CN) (r=0.498, P<0.01), cotyledon weight (CW) (r=0.880, P<0.01), cotyledon density (CD) (r=0.538, P<0.01), cotyledon width (CWI) (r=0.500, P<0.01) cotyledon length (CL) (r=0.414, P<0.01) and cotyledon density (CD) (r=0.278, P<0.05). CN was negatively correlated with placental efficiency (PE) (r=-0.421, P<0.01) and CD (r=-0.325, P<0.05). While expulsion of placenta, right teat length and cotyledon length were affected by parity of doe (P<0.05) birth weight (BW), CN, right teat diameter (RTD), left teat diameter (LTD), CD, and CL were affected by breed (P<0.01). Breed×parity was found significant both for expulsion time of placenta and left teat length (LTL) (P<0.05). Damascus goats had a significantly longer duration of licking and grooming events than others. Saanen was more likely to require birth assistance compared to the German Fawn.

Abstract
This study examined the physical and physiological differences from birth until 12 h of age within twin- and triplet-born litters. In 2005 and 2006, the parturition of 75 twin- and 62 triplet-bearing Romney ewes were observed. After parturition lamb blood samples were taken within 5 min of birth and rectal temperature was measured within 5 min of birth and at 1, 3, 6 and 12 h post-birth. Lamb birth weight, crown–rump length and thoracic-girth circumference were measured at 3 h of age. Lamb birth weight, plasma glucose, fructose, lactate, thyroxine and tri-iodothyronine did not differ (P > 0.05) between the heaviest-twin-born, lightest-twin-born and heaviest-triplet-born lamb. The lightest-triplet-born lambs, however, had lighter (P < 0.001) birthweights, greater (P < 0.001) surface-area-to-birth weight ratio, lower (P < 0.05) rectal temperatures, greater (P < 0.1) lactate concentrations and lower (P < 0.1) plasma thyroid hormone concentrations. These characteristics are known to have a negative impact on the ability of the lamb to maintain its body temperature after birth and may therefore provide some evidence as to why triplet-born lambs display a greater mortality rate than twin-born lambs, and why the lightest-triplet-born lambs have the greatest mortality rate within a litter.

Abstract
About a decade ago, concern was expressed that fetuses might suffer while dying in utero after the death of their dams. However, reference to already published literature provided compelling evidence that fetuses cannot consciously experience negative sensations or feelings, such as breathlessness and pain, and showed that, provided certain precautions are taken, they cannot suffer--their welfare is assured. In this article, I outline the major features of fetal and neonatal physiology that underlie this conclusion as it relates to fetuses that are neurologically exceptionally immature, moderately immature, or mature at birth. As an example of the practical application of this knowledge, I also show how the results of detailed studies reported in the biomedical literature, together with evolving understanding of the capacity of animals to experience negative sensations reported in the animal-welfare science literature, led to the development of international guidelines for the humane management of livestock fetuses when their dams are slaughtered commercially. I also highlight the notion that significant progress in the scientific understanding of animal welfare, and its applications, can be made by remaining open to knowledge developed in disciplines at the margins of or beyond those in the animal-welfare science, ethology, and veterinary sciences arenas.

Abstract
The relatively intensive supervision afforded many ewes at lambing time is a barrier to the development of low-input sheep management systems. However, in some flocks, reduction in this level of supervision may initially affect lamb mortality and animal welfare. In this review, possibilities for optimizing behavioral interaction between the ewe and lamb are considered, with the goal of improving lamb survival without the need for high levels of human supervision. At birth, ewes show specific behavioral patterns (e.g., licking or grooming, low-pitched bleats, udder acceptance) that facilitate the transition of the lamb from pre- to postnatal life and that accompany the formation of an exclusive olfactory memory for the lamb. The lamb also performs a specific sequence of behaviors directed toward standing, finding the udder, and sucking. The successful accomplishment of these behavior patterns is vital for the formation of a strong attachment between both partners, and for lamb survival. The expression of maternal behavior in the ewe is affected by her previous maternal experience, by nutrition in pregnancy, by breed, by temperament, and, to some extent, by the behavior of her lamb. The maternal care expressed by a ewe at parturition is indicative of her behavior throughout that lactation and in successive pregnancies, suggesting an underlying basis to maternal care intrinsic to that ewe. Studies with Scottish Blackface and Suffolk ewes show that ewes expressing high levels of maternal care have elevated plasma estradiol in late gestation compared with ewes with poorer maternal care, and that circulating estradiol concentration is correlated with maternal behaviors. Although the genetic basis of maternal behaviors has still to be fully determined, there are possibilities of improving maternal behavior by selection, and a better understanding of the neuroendocrine processes underlying individual differences in maternal behavior may help in developing selection strategies. In addition, selection on lamb behaviors, which show some genetic basis, may also be a route to improve lamb survival. Because behavior of both the ewe and lamb is affected by environmental factors, appropriate management, through pregnancy and at parturition, will enhance the expression of maternal behavior and lamb vigor, and so contribute to improving lamb survival.

Abstract
To survive, the newborn lamb must be able to maintain body temperature and to stand and move to the udder to suck colostrum to fuel heat production. The objective of this study was to investigate whether neonatal lambs showing slow behavioral progress to standing and sucking also have an impaired ability to maintain body temperature. The time taken to stand and suck after birth, rectal temperatures, and blood samples were collected from 115 newborn single, twin, and triplet lambs of 2 breeds, Scottish Blackface and Suffolk, which are known to show variations in their neonatal behavioral progress. Blood samples were assayed for thyroid hormones, known to be involved in heat production, and cortisol, which plays a role in tissue maturation before birth. In addition, colostrum samples were collected from the 56 ewes that gave birth to the lambs, and assayed for protein, fat, and vitamin contents. Heavy lambs (more than 1 SD above the breed mean), Blackface lambs, and singleton or twin lambs were quicker to stand and suck from their mothers than lightweight (more than 1 SD below the breed mean), Suffolk, or triplet lambs. Low birth weight lambs also had lower rectal temperatures than heavier lambs (P < 0.01), as did Suffolk compared with Blackface lambs (P < 0.001). Lambs that were slow to suck after birth had lower rectal temperatures than quick lambs, and this difference persisted for at least 3 d after birth. Within breed, heavy lambs had greater plasma triiodothyronine and thyroxine immediately after birth than light lambs. Blackface lambs had greater plasma triiodothyronine and thyroxine than Suffolk lambs but tended to have less cortisol. Colostrum produced by Blackface ewes had a greater fat content than that of Suffolk ewes (P < 0.001). Thus, lambs that are behaviorally slow at birth are also less able to maintain their body temperature after birth. Although part of their lower body temperature might be attributable to behavioral influences on thermoregulation, the data also suggest that physiological differences exist between these animals. These differences may be related to different degrees of maturity at birth.

Abstract
New-born lambs have limited energy reserves and need a rapid access to colostrum to maintain homeothermy and survive. In addition to energy, colostrum provides immunoglobulins which ensure passive systemic immunity. Therefore, getting early access to the udder is essential for the neonate. The results from the literature reviewed here highlight the importance of the birth site as the location where the mutual bonding between the mother and her young takes place. Attraction to birth fluids by the periparturient ewe leads to intense licking of the lamb. Grooming not only dries, cleans and stimulates the newborn it also facilitates bonding through learning of its individual odour. Ewes having twins should ideally stay on the birth site for at least six hours in order to establish a strong bond with both lambs and favour lambs survival. However, primiparous ewes or ewes having high levels of emotivity are more likely to exhibit poor maternal behaviour. In addition, difficult parturition and weather conditions have an indirect effect on the behaviour of the mother and are other major causes of lamb death. On the lamb's side, rapid access to the udder and early suckling are extremely important. Delayed lactation or insufficient colostrum yield may be fatal especially since suckling has strong rewarding properties in the establishment of a preference for the mother, which in turn increases lamb survival. Insufficient access to the udder in mothers leaving the birth site too soon after parturition, especially in twin-bearing ewes, could also partly account for the high incidence of loss of mother-young contact and subsequent death in such lambs. Strategies to improve neonatal survival should be aimed at maximising lamb vigour, colostrum production, and mutual mother-young bonding through adequate feeding in late pregnancy and selection on behaviour.

Abstract
AIMS To determine if sward height grazed by ewes in mid- to late-pregnancy affects subsequent indices of colostrum intake by twin and triplet lambs, and the extent of the variation in colostrums intake between twin and triplet litter-mates. METHODS Blood samples were collected from 75 twin and 46 triplet litters, respectively, 24-36 h after birth. Samples were not collected from lambs that died before this age. Lambs were born to ewes which had grazed one of four sward heights (2, 4, 6 and 8 cm) during mid- to late-pregnancy. Serum samples were analysed for gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) activities and glucose concentrations. The number of lambs present at weaning was used to determine lamb survival rate. RESULTS GGT activities of lambs born to ewes that grazed swards 2 cm high were lower than those born to ewes that grazed swards 4 and 6 cm high (p=0.053 and p=0.037, respectively). Glucose concentrations were higher in twin than triplet lambs (p=0.003) and in lambs born to ewes grazed on swards 6 cm high than those born to ewes grazed on swards 2 cm high (p=0.033). These differences were not evident after correction for differences in birthweight. There was significant (p<0.001) variation within litter-mates for GGT activities and glucose concentrations in both twins and triplets. The blood constituent status of lambs that died before the 24-36 h collection period is not known. However, lambs which died after this period had significantly lower GGT activities (p=0.009) and glucose (p=0.010) concentrations at the time of sampling than those which survived. CONCLUSIONS Farmers should ensure twin- and triplet-bearing ewes in mid- to late-pregnancy are grazing at least 4 cm of herbage to ensure colostrum intake of lambs in the postpartum period is not adversely affected.

Abstract
AIM To determine the physiological status of calves at birth and the perinatal factors that might predispose newborn calves to debility and death, using criteria previously established for newborn lambs. METHODS Friesian mixed-aged cows and heifers on a dairy farm in New Zealand that were close to calving were separated from the main herd and observed 24 h a day until they calved. Cows in which labour did not progress for over 1 h or which were in distress were assisted. About 12-13 min after birth, rectal temperature was measured and a blood sample was taken from each calf. The packed cell volume (PCV) and plasma lactate, glucose and fructose concentrations were determined. The time to stand for each calf and the air temperature and weather conditions at birth were recorded. RESULTS The parameters measured were within normal ranges for newborns for the majority of calves. Calves sired by an Angus bull and born to heifers (AngusX) had significantly higher plasma lactate and fructose concentrations than Friesian calves born to cows, but there were no significant differences between the two breeds in any of the other parameters measured. Calves of both breeds born with assistance had significantly higher plasma lactate concentrations than those born without. Friesian calves that were assisted at birth had significantly lower PCVs and took significantly longer to stand than calves born without assistance. Assisted AngusX calves were significantly heavier than their unassisted counterparts. Calves born during windy and wet weather and when air temperatures were below 10 degrees C had lower rectal temperatures, took longer to stand and had higher plasma glucose concentrations than those born in dry weather and when air temperatures were above 10 degrees C. CONCLUSIONS Calves with physiological parameters outside the normal range had experienced difficult labour and/or intrapartum hypoxaemia. Placental insufficiency and maternal undernutrition during late pregnancy did not apparently contribute to neonatal problems in the present study.

Abstract
Low perinatal lamb loss and fast lamb growth rates are important measures for efficient sheep production. To understand the role of ewe nutrition in late pregnancy, 100 adult Border Leicester × Merino ewes were joined at a synchronised oestrus. Ewes were nutritionally managed to maintain maternal body condition until day 130 of pregnancy at which time 50 twin-bearing ewes entered single pens. Thirteen ewes were allocated as controls and 14, 11 and 12 ewes for the 3 treatments groups. All were fed a base diet of lucerne hay (17.3% crude protein; 9.4 MJ ME/kg DM). Three of the 4 treatment groups were supplemented with oaten grain, formaldehyde-treated sunflower meal or lupin grain at 1 of 3 nominal feeding levels: 250, 500 or 750 g/ewe.day of supplement. Actual intake was less than amounts offered. Intakes measured in the final 5 days prepartum, were used in the analysis. Data were collected on peripheral progesterone and insulin-like growth factor-1 at 4 days prepartum and 50 min postpartum; peripheral oestrone sulfate at 4 and 3 days prepartum and 50 min postpartum; and colostrum weight and score at 50 min postpartum. Feeding level of supplement, but not type of supplement, significantly increased insulin-like growth factor-1 and decreased progesterone and oestrone sulfate levels. Correlations of energy and nitrogen intake with insulin-like growth factor-1, progesterone and oestrone sulfate levels were positive (P<0.01), as were the correlations of colostrum weight with these traits. An unexpected high correlation between energy and nitrogen intake masked any differential effects on colostrum production and hormone response. Nevertheless, the supply of energy and protein supplements were associated with elevated colostrum weights and scores, and lower progesterone concentration. Lowering progesterone levels is considered necessary for successful parturition. Oaten grain was the least desirable grain supplement. These observations support the practical importance of providing adequate nutrition in late pregnancy and its effect on colostrum yield and presumably lamb survival and growth.

Abstract
AIM Using specified indices, to determine the nutritional and thermal status of calves between 1 and 4 days of age. METHODS After birth, calves (n=106) were collected daily, according to farm practice. Over the following 4 days a jugular blood sample and rectal temperature were taken twice daily before feeding. Plasma concentrations of glucose, beta-hydroxybutyrate and urea, and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) activities were determined. The significance of differences in plasma composition and rectal temperature between calves whose birth had been assisted or unassisted, and between calves with low and high plasma GGT activities 24 h after birth, was determined using repeated measures analysis of variance. RESULTS There were no marked differences in plasma metabolite levels or body temperature of assisted and unassisted calves. Calves that had high plasma GGT activities 24 h after birth had higher plasma glucose concentrations over the 4 days than calves that had low plasma GGT activities (p<0.001). Overall, compared to published data on poorly-fed and hypothermic calves, calves in this study were normoglycaemic, their plasma beta-hydroxybutyrate and urea concentrations were low and their rectal temperatures were normal, indicating that they were well fed and did not become hypothermic. CONCLUSIONS The nutritional and thermal status of at least 90% of the calves was compatible with good health and survival during the first 4 days after birth.

Abstract
Much has been learnt during the last 50 years about the causes of neonatal mortality and morbidity and about practical means for minimising them in newborn lambs, kids, bovine calves, deer calves, foals and piglets. The major causes of problems in these newborns are outlined briefly and include hypothermia due to excessive heat loss or to hypoxia-induced, starvation-induced or other forms of inhibited heat production. They also include maternal undernutrition, mismothering, infection and injury. The published literature reveals that the scientific investigations which clarified these causes and led to practical means for minimising the problems, involved iterative successions of self-reinforcing laboratory and field or clinical investigations conducted over many years. These studies focused largely on solutions to the problems, not on the suffering that the newborn might experience, so that an analysis of the associated welfare insults had not apparently been conducted until now. The present assessment focuses on potentially noxious subjective experiences the newborn may have. The account of the causes of neonatal mortality and morbidity outlined early in this review indicates that the key subjective experiences which require analysis in animal welfare terms are breathlessness, hypothermia, hunger, sickness and pain. Reference to documented responses of farm animals and, where appropriate, to human experience, suggests that breathlessness and hypothermia usually represent less severe neonatal welfare insults than do hunger, sickness and pain. Major science-based improvements in the management of pregnancy and birth have markedly reduced the overall amount of welfare compromise experienced by newborn farm animals and further improvements may be expected as knowledge is refined and extended in the future.

Abstract
We tested the hypothesis that supplementation with cracked maize during the last week of pregnancy would provide ewes with a substrate for glucose and enhance the synthesis of lactose and, consequently, their production of colostrum. Thirty single- and 30 twin-bearing ewes were fed lucerne hay and half of each group was supplemented daily with 0.75 kg per head cracked maize during the last week of pregnancy. Colostrum production and the endocrine patterns in the animals were investigated. Supplementation with maize more than doubled the mass of colostrum available at birth in unsupplemented ewes: 339 v. 145 g in single-bearing ewes and 536 v. 197 g in twin-bearing ewes (P < 0.001). The total colostrum produced in the 10 h after birth was also significantly increased by supplementation: 730 v. 475 g in single-bearing ewes and 1259 v. 631 g in twin-bearing ewes (P < 0.01). The colostrum in the supplemented ewes was also more liquid with a viscosity score of 5.8 compared with 5.7 and 4.5 in unsupplemented single- and twin-bearing ewes (P < 0.01). Supplemented ewes had higher concentrations of lactose in their colostrum at parturition (2.6% v. 1.8% in single-bearing ewes and 2.5% v. 1.4% in twin-bearing ewes; P < 0.01). The plasma concentrations of progesterone and growth hormone in supplemented ewes were lower, whereas those of IGF-I and insulin were higher, all consistent with a higher capacity to produce colostrum. It is concluded that a high-energy supplement, like maize, fed to ewes in the last week of gestation increases their capacity to produce colostrum for their lambs, particularly for ewes bearing twins.

Abstract
This review distinguishes between physical responsiveness, behavioural arousal and awareness in fetal and newborn lambs, and summarises the physical and physiological factors which activate and suppress behavioural arousal. Important activators include: rising blood oestrogen concentrations just before birth; physical stimuli during delivery; exposure to cold on delivery, and; elevation in blood oxygen levels following the onset of pulmonary respiration. Suppressors of behavioural arousal and awareness are: low oxygen levels and high concentrations of progesterone and its metabolites in the fetal circulation, and; exposure to a warm intrauterine environment and to a circulating placental factor that inhibits activity including breathing.</br> In view of the relatively high levels of oxygen required to sustain awareness in adult animals, the low levels in fetal circulation, and the actions of other suppressors, it is unlikely that awareness occurs in the fetus. Nevertheless, fetuses perform a range of physical acts that would be supported or initiated by brainstem activity. In addition they show physical responses to potentially painful stimuli during late gestation, but it has yet to be demonstrated that these are linked to perception of pain. It is postulated that perception of pain could only occur once there is a level of oxygenation that supports overall awareness, and under normal circumstances this would only occur once the newborn starts breathing air. The implications for the welfare of fetal lambs and calves during experimental surgery, slaughter of the pregnant dam, collection of blood (serum) from fetuses at slaughter, and during fetotomy are favourable, indicating that current practices, when carefully undertaken, are humane.</br>

Abstract
This study investigated effects of birth weight and postnatal nutrition on regulation of energy metabolism in the neonatal lamb. Low (mean +/- SD 2.289 +/- 0.341 kg, n = 28) and high (4.840 +/- 0.446 kg, n = 20) birth weight male Suffolk x (Finnsheep x Dorset) lambs were individually reared on a liquid diet to grow rapidly (ad libitum fed, ADG = 337 g, n = 20) or slowly (ADG = 150 g, n = 20) from birth to live weights (LW) up to approximately 20 kg. At birth, small newborns had higher plasma concentrations of urea nitrogen (mean +/- SEM 8.31 +/- 0.25 vs 6.39 +/- 0.32 mM, P = 0.002) and somatotropin (ST, 49.1 +/- 17.0 vs 10.8 +/- 4.3 ng/mL, P = .045) and lower IGF-I (36.1 +/- 6.8 vs 157.7 +/- 21.8 ng/mL, P < 0.001) than large newborns. Plasma glucose (1.42 +/- 0.23 vs 2.63 +/- 0.95 mM, P = 0.147) and insulin (0.09 +/- 0.02 vs 0.13 +/- 0.06 ng/mL, P = 0.264) concentrations did not differ. Urea nitrogen concentration in plasma peaked and then declined rapidly in all lambs during the first week postpartum, and plasma ST declined on a body-weight-related basis from birth. During rearing to 20 kg LW, plasma insulin was higher in low- vs high-birth-weight lambs. Lambs fed ad libitum had greater plasma concentrations of glucose, urea nitrogen, insulin, and IGF-I compared to those fed a restricted diet (ADG = 150 g). The results suggest that during the early postpartum period, newborn lambs exhibit the fetal characteristic of high rates of amino acid oxidation. The results also support the notion that, at birth, low-birth-weight lambs are less mature than high-birth-weight lambs in aspects of metabolic and endocrine development, which may enhance their capacity to utilize amino acids for energy production and to support gluconeogenesis during the immediate postpartum period. Being small at birth also resulted in elevated plasma insulin concentrations when adequate nutriment to support moderate or rapid growth was provided postpartum, although it remains to be elucidated whether this more chronic effect persists in the longer term.

Abstract
AbstractA review of the literature was undertaken to consider the possible effects of human intervention (shepherding) at around the time of parturition in extensively farmed sheep. There is little clear empirical evidence to suggest that shepherding ensures either easy births or the integrity of ewe–lamb contact — factors closely linked to the welfare of the animals at this time. There is similarly no clear support for shepherding being harmful. However, the following suggestions are made: first, human presence can inhibit or delay parturition; second, extended parturition can increase the risk of, or is associated with, dystocia; and third, disturbance at birth can compromise ewe-lamb bonding and consequently lamb survival. Furthermore, sheep populations that have undergone rigorous selection for ease of lambing and minimal shepherding in extensive environments have well-documented physical and behavioural traits underlying their predisposition for enhanced lamb survival. Although our cultural legacy may impose a duty to intensively monitor animals at lambing, it is concluded that, at least in some situations, shepherding may not be entirely beneficial. The commonly held view of the necessity for some human intervention in extensive livestock systems is perhaps overly paternalistic, and requires a more comprehensive appraisal.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of three resuscitation procedures on respiratory and metabolic adaptation to extra-uterine life during the first 24 h after birth in healthy newborn calves. Twenty-four newborn calves were randomly grouped into four categories: six calves did not receive any specific resuscitation procedure and were considered as controls (C); six received pharyngeal and nasal suctioning immediately after birth by use of a hand-powered vacuum pump (SUC); six received five litres of cold water poured over their heads immediately after birth (CW) and six were housed in a calf pen with an infrared radiant heater for 24 h after birth (IR). Calves were examined at birth, 5, 15, 30, 45 and 60 min, 2, 3, 6, 12 and 24 h after birth and the following measurements were recorded: physical and clinical examination, arterial blood gas analysis, pulmonary function tests using the oesophageal balloon catheter technique, arterial and venous blood acid-base balance analysis, jugular venous blood sampling for determination of metabolic, haematological and passive immune transfer variables. SUC was accompanied by improved pulmonary function efficiency and by a less pronounced decrease in body temperature. The "head shaking movement" and the subsequent temporary increase in total pulmonary resistance as well as the greater lactic acidosis due to CW were accompanied by more efficient, but statistically non-significant, pulmonary gas exchanges. IR allowed maintenance of higher body temperature without requiring increased catabolism of energetic stores. IR also caused a change in breathing pattern which contributed to better distribution of the ventilation and to slightly improved gas exchange. The results indicate that use of SUC, CW and IR modified respiratory and metabolic adaptation during the first 24 h after birth without side-effects. These resuscitation procedures should be recommended for their specific indication, i.e. cleansing of fetal fluid from upper airways, hypothermal stimulation of breathing and prevention of heat losses.

Abstract
The effects of food withdrawal for 30 hours and transport for up to 12 hours on 5- to 10-day-old calves were determined by monitoring plasma concentrations of glucose, beta-hydroxybutyrate, urea, lactate and creatine phosphokinase. In addition gamma-glutamyl transferase activity, packed cell volume, total plasma protein concentration, bodyweight and rectal temperature were recorded. Food withdrawal for 30 hours caused hypoglycemia but calves maintained normothermia and although their beta-hydroxybutyrate level increased indicating lipid mobilisation, the changes in blood urea level were minimal indicating low amino acid catabolism. When calves were transported for 12 hours in addition to having food withdrawn for 30 hours, they remained normoglycemic for six hours longer than non-transported calves, probably due to an effect of muscular activity during bracing against truck movements. Stocking calves at a lower density during transport apparently had a beneficial effect, as calves were able to lie down throughout the journey and therefore produced a similar metabolic profile to resting, non-transported animals. Transport and food withdrawal had no obvious effects on calf hydration. The results of this study suggest that food withdrawal for up to 30 hours and transport for up to 12 hours had no detrimental effects on the metabolism of healthy and clinically normal calves. With correct feeding regimes and transport protocols, welfare compromise in young, healthy calves being transported for up to 12 hours can be minimised when they are slaughtered within 30 hours of the start of transport.

Abstract
1. Using tracer methodology, endogenous glucose production was measured in twenty-six chronically catheterized sheep fetuses during normal fed conditions and in response to a 48 h period of maternal fasting at different gestational ages during the last 10-15 days of gestation (term, 145 +/- 2 days). 2. In normal fed conditions, the rate of fetal glucose production was negligible until 143-145 days when it rose significantly to account for 50 % of the glucose used by the fetus. The rise in fetal glucogenesis towards term closely parallelled the normal prepartum rise in fetal plasma cortisol and catecholamines. 3. Maternal fasting for 48 h induced endogenous glucose production in fetuses at 139-141 days but not at 133-135 days of gestation. Maternal fasting also induced increases in the plasma cortisol and noradrenaline levels in all the fetuses studied. Fetal plasma cortisol levels at the end of the fast and the increment in fetal plasma cortisol during maternal fasting were significantly greater in the older groups of fasted animals. 4. When the data from all the fetuses were combined, partial correlation analysis of fetal glucose production and the log plasma concentrations of cortisol and total catecholamines showed that plasma cortisol was the predominant regulator of fetal glucogenesis during late gestation. However, once plasma cortisol levels exceeded 17.5 ng ml-1, plasma catecholamines were a major influence on fetal glucogenesis. 5. The results show that glucogenesis occurs in fetal sheep during late gestation in conditions in which the fetal plasma concentrations of cortisol and catecholamines are elevated. They also suggest that cortisol enhances the capacity for glucogenesis in utero, while catecholamines actually activate glucose production in sheep fetuses close to term.

Abstract
Metabolic rate, rectal temperature Tr and respiratory quotient (RQ) were determined in 16 sick foals, aged 0-182 h. The foals were categorized into three groups: premature, dysmature or those suffering from neonatal maladjustment syndrome. The mean metabolic rate of the premature foals was 71 watts per unit area of body surface (W m(-2)), significantly lower than that of the other two groups. The overall mean metabolic rate for the sick foals was 82 W m(-2), about 25% below that of healthy foals of similar age. Air temperature (Ta) was 9.5-26.3 degrees C, and several foals shivered despite the provision of additional 'warmth' and insulation. Values of Tr were below 38 degrees C until after 4 h postpartum. Thereafter, Tr averaged 38.1 degrees C but fluctuated widely. The RQ (mean value 0.83) was not correlated with Ta. The lower critical temperature for the sick foals was estimated at 24 degrees C, on average. Methods to prevent excessive heat loss from sick foals are suggested.

Abstract
In the ewe, high level feeding is associated with low levels of circulating progesterone and that progesterone withdrawal is a prerequisite for lactogenesis and the onset of copious milk secretion. A total of 108 ewes was allocated to a 3 x 2 factorial experiment to determine the effect of diet on serum progesterone (P4) concentration and colostrum yield. On D 96 of pregnancy, the ewes were offered either grass silage, molassed sugar beet pulp (beet pulp) silage or grass silage supplemented with beet pulp. All ewes were given ad libitum access to silage. From D 126 of pregnancy, half the diets were supplemented with soybean meal with the aim of achieving a total crude protein intake of 220 g/ewe/day. Blood samples were taken on D 142 of pregnancy and at 1, 10 and 18 h post lambing for P4 determination. Metabolizable energy intakes (Mega Joules/ewe/day) of 9.1, 11.2 and 12.1 (SEM 0.37) and crude protein intakes (g/ewe/day) of 142.8, 167.4 and 162.0 (SEM 3.46) were recorded for grass silage, beet pulp ensiled and beet pulp supplemented silages, respectively, from D 126 to D 147 of pregnancy. Soybean meal supplementation increased the crude protein intake from 97.1 to 217.0 g/ewe/day (SEM 2.86) and Metabolisable Energy intake from 9.0 to 12.6 Mega Joules/ewe/day (SEM 0.31). Supplementation with soybean meal decreased P4 concentration (ng/ml) on D 142 (P < 0.05) and at 1 h (P < 0.01), 10 h (P < 0.01) and 18 h post lambing (P < 0.01). Ewes offered grass silage had higher P4 concentrations on D 142 (P < 0.01) and at 1 h after lambing (P < 0.05) than the beet pulp-supplemented ewes. There were negative linear relationships between P4 concentration at D 142 and colostrum yield at 1 h (P < 0.01) and between P4 concentration at 1 h and colostrum yield at 1 h (P < 0.001) and total yield at 18 h (P < 0.001). In conclusion, ewes which were underfed had higher P4 concentrations at all times, and there were negative linear relationships between colostrum yield and P4 concentrations on D 142 of pregnancy and at 1 h post lambing.

Abstract
Physiological challenges facing the perinatal individual are huge. This is partly because of the marked and abrupt change from the intrauterine to the extrauterine environment, but also because the physiological responses to that change depend upon systems whose maturation is affected markedly by birth. Perinatal maturation appears, therefore, both to precede and accompany the physiological adaptations required for neonatal survival. This review does not provide a comprehensive coverage of perinatal physiology but directs attention towards evaluating constraints on foetal and neonatal thermogenesis, especially those imposed by post-natal availability of metabolic fuels in body reserves deposited before birth and acquired in colostrum and milk after birth. The relative importance of the supply of carbohydrate from body reserves and colostrum is examined. Carbohydrate is the major rate-limiting substrate with respect to heat production. It is shown that in the normal birth environments of several species, including the horse, colostral supply of lactose is not adequate to meet the entire carbohydrate needs of the neonate. It must, therefore, draw on its body glycogen reserves to sustain the required rates of heat production during the first day after birth. Gastrointestinal maturation and growth play a major part in the initial and continued provision of substrates for general metabolism and growth. Pre-natal and post-natal development of the stomach and intestines in a number of species are considered, including their disproportionately large growth compared with the body as a whole during the first 1-3 days after birth. Possible contributions to gastro intestinal growth and body growth of milk-borne growth factors such as epidermal growth factors and the insulin-like growth factors are considered. The role, as a possible significant stimulus to gastrointestinal growth and maturation immediately after birth, of the high levels of these growth factors in colostrum is evaluated.

Abstract
Management systems and client goals are integral components of clinical nutrition and vary among and within sheep and goat producers. Evaluation includes client interview and history taking, record examination, forage analyses, animal examination, and occasionally blood or tissue assays. The types of nutritional disorders that are likely to be observed in sheep and goats vary according to the type of management and can be grouped according to feedlot, intensive production, farm flocks, dairy, and browse systems. Examples described include nutritional problems that may be overlooked (water deprivation), widespread (energy imbalance), currently difficult to prevent and treat (selenium deficiency), and reflective of soil-plant-animal complexities (copper-molybdenum balance).
