Influence on serum lipids, lipoproteins and blood pressure of mackerel and herring diet in patients with type IV and V hyperlipoproteinemia

Analyses and Declarations of Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Canned Seafood May Help to Quantify Their Dietary Intake

The American Heart Association (AHA) recently confirmed common recommendations of one to two fish dishes per week in order to prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD). Nevertheless, the natural fluctuations of lipids and fatty acids (FA) in processed seafood caught little public attention. Moreover, consumers of unprocessed seafood in general do not know how much omega-3 fatty acids (omega-3 FA) within servings they actually ingest. The few studies published until today considering this aspect have been re-evaluated in today's context. They included four observational studies with canned fatty coldwater fish (mackerel and herring from the same region, season, producer and research group). Their outcomes were similar to those conducted in the following years using supplements. Cans containing seafood (especially fatty coldwater fish) with declared content of omega-3 FA are ready-to-use products. Human studies have shown a higher bioavailability of omega-3 FA by joint uptake of fat. Canned fatty coldwater fish contain omega-3 FA plus plenty of fat in one and the same foodstuff. That suggests a new dietary paradigm with mixed concepts including several sources with declared content of omega-3 FA for reducing the cardiovascular risk and other acknowledged indications.

Omega-3 fatty acids alter lipoprotein subfraction distributions and the in vitro conversion of very low density lipoproteins to low density lipoproteins

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a fish oil concentrate (FOC) on the in vitro conversion of very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) to intermediate (IDL) and low density lipoproteins (LDL). Six hypertriglyceridemic patients were randomly allocated to receive either placebo (olive oil) or FOC (1 g/14 kg body weight/day) for 4 weeks in a crossover study with a 4-week washout period. The FOC provided 3 g of eicosapentaenoic + docosahexaenoic acid per 70 kg of body weight, and it lowered plasma triglyceride and VLDL cholesterol levels by 35% and 42%, respectively. Decreases in the largest particles (VLDL(1)) were primarily responsible, with no effect noted in smaller VLDL particles (VLDL(2) and VLDL(3)). The FOC increased LDL cholesterol levels by 25% (P < 0.06) but did not affect LDL particle size. VLDL(1) and VLDL(3) were incubated in vitro with human postheparin lipases. Although triglycerides from both types of VLDL were hydrolyzed to the same extent with both treatments, particles isolated during the FOC phase were more readily converted into IDL and LDL than were control particles. These data suggest that the marine omega3 fatty acids may enhance the propensity of VLDL to be converted to LDL, partly explaining the decreased VLDL and increased LDL levels in FOC-treated patients.

Lipid, protein, and calorie content of different Atlantic and Mediterranean fish, shellfish, and molluscs commonly eaten in the south of Spain

We undertook a systematic evaluation of the lipid, protein, calorie, and fatty acid composition in 35 species of fish, shellfish and molluscs commonly consumed throughout the four seasons of the year in Andalusia, Spain. Using a portion of muscle tissue the following were measured in each study unit: total lipids (extraction using Folch's method and gravimetry), protein concentration (Kjehldal's method), total calories (direct calorimetry), and composition of fatty acids (gas chromatography). The lipid, protein, and different fatty acid concentrations found are presented in table form. There was a high degree of inter-species variability in the concentration of lipids and the various fatty acids. There was also a high degree of intra-species seasonal variability in some cases. The relative proportion of fatty acids was not independent of the total concentration of lipids, independently of the season studied. This systematic study of a large group of species shows that the cataloguing of fish as 'white' or 'blue' depends especially on the time of year they are captured. For example, in spring the mackerel (Scomber scombrus), a fish considered traditionally to be 'blue' (fatty), has the same lipid concentration as the dover sole (Solea vulgaris), commonly considered to be 'white' (little fat), and the sea pike (Merluccius merluccius) has a higher lipid concentration in autumn than the jack mackerel (Trachurus trachurus). Even greater differences existed when the fish were classified according to their richness in n-3 fatty acids. These differences in the total lipid concentration and the composition of fatty acids, as well as the inter-relations between them, may, under certain circumstances, be important for the calculation of dietary calories and nutritional values, and may explain the differences found between the various tables of food composition, as well as the divergent results in epidemiological studies on the association between fish in diets and various diseases, such as diabetes or ischaemic cardiopathy.

Dietary fish oil normalize dyslipidemia and glucose intolerance with unchanged insulin levels in rats fed a high sucrose diet

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the lipid-lowering effects of fish oils and concomitant consequences on glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity in an experimental animal model of hypertriglyceridemia induced by high sucrose intake. To achieve this goal, male Wistar rats were fed a semi-synthetic sucrose rich diet (SRD) (w/w: 62.3% sucrose, 8% corn oil, 17% protein) for 90 days. At the time, a well established and permanent hypertriglyceridemia accompanied by glucose intolerance was present. After that, one half of the animals continued on the SRD up to 120 days. The other half received an SRD in which the source of fat was substituted by cod liver oil (w/w 7% CLO plus 1% corn oil) from day 90 to 120 (SRD+CLO). Control rats were fed a semi-synthetic diet (CD) (w/w: 62.5% corn starch, 8% corn oil, 17% protein) throughout the 120 days experimental period. Results obtained after the experimental period show that the hypertriglyceridemia and glucose intolerance ensuing long term feeding normal rats with a sucrose-rich diet could be completely reversed mediating no change in circulating insulin levels by shifting the source of fat in the diet from corn oil to cod liver oil. These findings suggest that manipulation of dietary fats may play a role in the management of the lipid disorders associated with glucose intolerance and insulin resistance.

[Modification of fecal bile acid excretion by fish oil in healthy probands]

Several studies indicated a protective effect of fish oil on colon carcinogenesis which might be due to alterations in prostaglandin E2 synthesis of the colonic mucosa. Additional effects on fecal bile acid excretion may also play a role since especially secondary bile acids are known to act as promoters in colon cancer development. In the present study possible influences on bile acid excretion were investigated in 12 healthy volunteers whose daily diet was supplemented for 4 weeks with 11 g of fish oil (FO) and corn oil (CO) per day, respectively. Fecal bile acids were analyzed by gas-liquid-chromatography. Fecal excretion of total bile acids was not different during the periods of FO and CO-supplementation (301.9 vs. 320.3 mg/day). However, a non-significant trend to a lower daily excretion of the secondary bile acid lithocholic acid was found after FO compared to CO-ingestion (99.6 vs. 109.4 mg/day; p = 0.22). Since secondary bile acids are known promoters of colon carcinogenesis, these findings may implicate a favorable situation with respect to colon cancer prevention.

Dietary fat and blood pressure

Both animal and human data suggest that polyunsaturated fatty acids of n-6 and n-3 series may play a role in blood pressure regulation. The majority of dietary intervention studies have shown that changing from a high fat, low linoleic acid diet to a low fat, high linoleic acid diet lowers blood pressure. However, controlled, double-bind studies do not support the independent effect of linoleic acid. Polyunsaturated n-3 fish fatty acids lower blood pressure but only in pharmacological doses that cannot generally be recommended. The mechanisms of blood pressure regulation by n-6 and n-3 fatty acids seem to be related to prostaglandin metabolism.

The effects of n-3 fatty acids on plasma lipids and lipoproteins and other cardiovascular risk factors in patients with hyperlipidemia

This review discusses the effects of dietary n-3 fatty acids on the plasma concentrations and metabolism of lipoproteins with a particular focus on work in human subjects. The influence of dietary n-3 fatty acids on the concentrations of plasma lipoproteins are affected by the amount of n-3 fatty acids as well as by the lipoprotein phenotype in the patients under investigation. On the basis of the observed changes in lipoproteins, dietary n-3 fatty acids exert the greatest effects on the concentrations of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins; their therapeutic potential is greatest in patients with hypertriglyceridemia. In addition to their effects on plasma lipoproteins, dietary n-3 fatty acids have been reported to exert potentially favorable effects on blood pressure, platelet function and viscosity. These effects may justify the use of supplements of dietary n-3 fatty acids in selected patients with hypertriglyceridemia to reduce the risk of atherosclerosis; however, the benefits of such therapy remain to be demonstrated.

Does fish oil lower blood pressure? A meta-analysis of controlled trials

BACKGROUND

In a meta-analysis of 31 placebo-controlled trials on 1356 subjects, we examined the effect of omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil on blood pressure by grouping studies that were similar in fish oil dose, length of treatment, health of the subjects, or study design.

METHODS AND RESULTS

The mean reduction in blood pressure caused by fish oil for the 31 studies was -3.0/-1.5 mm Hg (95% confidence intervals: systolic blood pressure: -4.5, -1.5; diastolic blood pressure: -2.2, -0.8). There was a statistically significant dose-response effect when studies were grouped by omega-3 fatty acid dose: -1.3/-0.7 mm Hg at doses < or = 3 g/d, -2.9/-1.6 mm Hg at 3.3 to 7 g/d, and -8.1/-5.8 mm Hg at 15 g/d. Both eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid were significantly related to blood pressure response. There was no effect on blood pressure in eight studies of "healthy" persons (mean reduction, -0.4/-0.7 mm Hg) at an overall mean dose of 4.2 g omega-3 fatty acids/d. By contrast, there was a significant effect of -3.4/-2.0 mm Hg in the group of hypertensive studies with a mean fish oil dose of 5.6 g/d and on systolic blood pressure only in six studies of hypercholesterolemic patients (-4.4/-1.1 mm Hg) with a mean dose of 4.0 g/d. A nonsignificant decrease in blood pressure was observed in four studies of patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (-6.3/-2.9 mm Hg). Variations in the length of treatment (from 3 to 24 weeks), type of placebo, and study design (crossover or parallel groups) did not appear to account for inconsistent findings among studies.

CONCLUSIONS

There is a dose-response effect of fish oil on blood pressure of -0.66/-0.35 mm Hg/g omega-3 fatty acids. The hypotensive effect may be strongest in hypertensive subjects and those with clinical atherosclerotic disease or hypercholesterolemia.

Stress and fatty liver--possible indications for dietary long-chain n-3 fatty acids

The favourable effects of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)- and doco-sahexaenoic acid (DHA)-rich diets (marine fish, fish oil) on several risk factors for cardiovascular disease are well established. The present survey describes possible new indications for diets supplemented with long-chain n-3 fatty acids. During a standardized psychophysiological stress test (arithmetic, sentence completion tasks) systolic blood pressure after 2 weeks of diets supplemented with either 60 ml/day of sunflower or linseed oil was significantly decreased. During the sunflower oil-rich diet 45 g/day of linoleic acid (LA) and during the linseed oil-rich period 38 g/day of alpha-linolenic acid (LNA) were ingested. After a 2-week diet supplemented with mackerel (2 cans/day equivalent to 2.2 g/day of EPA and 2.8 g/day of DHA) systolic and diastolic blood pressure within the same test design appeared significantly lower. After a herring diet providing 2 cans/day, equivalent to 1.0 g of EPA and 1.8 g of DHA, the blood pressure-lowering effect was minor. The increase of thromboxane B2 (TxB2) during the stress test failed to occur after the fish diets. The results suggest a stress-protective effect of polyenoic acid-rich diets, which appears most pronounced and dose-related after long-chain n-3 fatty acids. In human liver an increase of fat droplet size in hepatocytes is associated with a decrease of the percentage of EPA in liver triglycerides. A diminution of plasma free fatty acids (FFA) after a mackerel diet might contribute to a depressed synthesis of liver triglycerides.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

A controlled study on the effects of n-3 fatty acids on lipid and glucose metabolism in non-insulin-dependent diabetic patients

Eight male non-insulin-dependent diabetic patients participated in a double-blind randomized cross-over study (2 weeks for each period) evaluating the effects of 10 g/day fish oil dietary supplementation on glucose and lipid metabolism. Fasting serum triglyceride concentrations were decreased by fish oil because of a reduction in VLDL (1.4 +/- 0.2 vs. 1.9 +/- 0.2 mmol/l, P less than 0.025). LDL cholesterol concentration was instead increased (3.4 +/- 0.3 vs. 2.8 +/- 0.3 mmol/l, P less than 0.025) and net changes in VLDL triglyceride and in LDL cholesterol were inversely correlated (r = -0.86, P less than 0.01). Plasma free fatty acids concentrations and turnover rate [( 3H]palmitate method) were similar after fish oil and placebo. Fish oil supplement did not induce significant changes in fasting blood glucose (8.1 +/- 1.1 vs. 8.5 +/- 1.2 mmol/l) and average daily blood glucose (BG) (9.4 +/- 3.2 vs. 9.3 +/- 3.5 mmol/l). Glucose stimulated plasma insulin response during a hyperglycemic clamp was not significantly influenced by fish oil both in the early phase and during steady state. Insulin sensitivity (M/I index) was also unchanged. In conclusion, this study shows that a dietary supplement of fish oil decreases plasma triglyceride levels in non-insulin-dependent diabetic patients, an increased conversion rate of VLDL to LDL playing a role in this change. With this dosage of fish oil no relevant variations in glycemic control, insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity occurred.

Fish oil amplifies the effect of propranolol in mild essential hypertension

Forty-seven male patients with mild essential hypertension were randomly allocated to three subgroups. After a run-in period of 4 weeks, the first subgroup (n = 16) received propranolol (80 mg/day) for 36 weeks followed by a placebo period of 4 weeks. The second subgroup (n = 15), after a run-in period of 4 weeks, was given a supplement of encapsulated fish oil (9 g/day) for 36 weeks with a subsequent period of 4 weeks in which fish oil placebo was given. The third subgroup (n = 16), after a run-in period of 4 weeks, was given propranolol (80 mg/day) for 12 weeks, propranolol (80 mg/day) plus fish oil capsules (9 g/day equivalent to 1.8 g/day of eicosapentaenoic acid and 1.1 g/day of docosahexaenoic acid) for 12 weeks, propranolol plus fish oil placebo (same doses for 12 weeks) with a subsequent period of 4 weeks when propranolol placebo was administered. The results indicate a blood pressure-lowering effect of fish oil, which was comparable with that of propranolol. The simultaneous intake of fish oil plus propranolol was more effective than propranolol or fish oil alone. Propranolol treatment resulted in a decrease of plasma norepinephrine, plasma renin activity, and thromboxane B2 formation. After fish oil supplementation, plasma norepinephrine and thromboxane B2 formation were likewise reduced, whereas plasma renin activity appeared increased. The decrease of serum triglycerides, total and low density lipoprotein cholesterol as well as the rise of high density lipoprotein cholesterol are concomitant beneficial effects, which justify the consideration of fish oil alone or in combination with antihypertensive drugs for the treatment of mild hypertension.

Effects of an ethyl ester preparation of fish oils (Himega) on lipids and lipoproteins in hyperlipidaemia

Clinical trials were conducted to assess the utility of HimegaR in the management of hyperlipidaemia. Himega is an ethyl ester concentrate from fish oil containing at least 50% n-3 fatty acid and minimal cholesterol. In Study 1, 13 subjects with primary hypertriglyceridaemia consumed Himega or a triglyceride-based fish oil in a randomised, double-blind crossover study for 12 weeks. Nine subjects took 2 g/day of n-3 fatty acid but four subjects with marked hypertriglyceridaemia took 4 g/day. Plasma triglycerides were reduced by approximately 50% with either product. There was a very similar effect on all lipid and lipoprotein parameters, including an 18% increase in LDL cholesterol and 23% increase in serum apolipoprotein B. In Study 2, nine subjects with primary hypercholesterolaemia took 2 g/day of n-3 fatty acid (Himega) or placebo (olive oil) in a randomised, double-blind crossover study for nine weeks. Plasma cholesterol was reduced by 6%, without significant change in LDL cholesterol. Fish oils in the form of ethyl esters or triglyceride are assimilated to a similar degree and lead to equivalent triglyceride-lowering in hypertriglyceridaemia, while simultaneously increasing LDL particle numbers. Himega does not reduce LDL levels in hypercholesteraemia, despite being a product with minimal cholesterol content.

A possible contribution of decrease in free fatty acids to low serum triglyceride levels after diets supplemented with n-6 and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids

Intraindividual comparisons of diets supplemented with sunflowerseed oil (rich in linoleic acid, LA, C18:2n-6), linseed oil (enriched with alpha-linolenic acid, LNA, C18:3n-3) and canned mackerel (rich in eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA, C20:5n-3 and docosahexaenoic acid, DHA, C22:6n-3) were made in 30 patients with primary hyperlipoproteinemia (HLP) of phenotypes IIa (n = 9), IIb (n = 7), IV (n = 7) and V (n = 7). The lipid- and blood pressure-lowering effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), particularly those of the EPA- and DHA-rich diet, were confirmed irrespective of the type of HLP. Apolipoproteins A-I and B remained unchanged. The most remarkable finding was a substantial depression of free fatty acids (FFA) within a standardized glucose tolerance test (GTT) associated with the fall of serum triglycerides after diets enriched with n-6 and especially after those supplemented with n-3 PUFA. It was suggested that the decrease of FFA indicates reduced peripheral lipolysis, which might be a hitherto ignored factor involved in the triglyceride-lowering action of n-6 and, more pronounced, of n-3 PUFA.

Blood pressure and serum lipids from SHR after diets supplemented with evening primrose, sunflowerseed or fish oil

Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) at 4 weeks of age were fed a diet supplemented with sunflowerseed oil (SO), evening primrose oil (EPO), fish oil (FO) or EPO + FO for 22 weeks. A diet with commercially available pellets served as control. Systolic blood pressure was significantly lower during and after FO, EPO and EPO + FO, whereas the lower level after SO was not significant when compared with the controls. Serum triglycerides and total cholesterol were lowest after EPO followed FO. The combination of both EPO and FO resulted in unexpected high values of triglycerides and cholesterol. HDL-cholesterol was likewise highest after EPO + FO. The results indicate a quantitatively different depression of blood pressure and serum lipids from SHR by individual polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA).

Extreme decrease of linoleic acid in renal medulla from rats after a diet supplemented with cod liver oil

Spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and normotensive rats were fed a diet supplemented with linseed oil or cod liver oil for 22 weeks. The most remarkable finding was an extreme fall of linoleic acid in lipids from renal medulla after cod liver oil supplementation. In free fatty acids (FFA) eicosatrienoic acid (C2): 3n-9) appeared increased as a sign of essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency.

Omega-3 fatty acid treatment fails to alter alpha 1-adrenergic receptor mediated phosphoinositide turnover in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

1. The effect of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on alpha 1-adrenergic receptor-mediated phosphoinositide turnover in the hearts of 6-week streptozotocin diabetic rats was studied. 2. The diabetic state was characterized by decreased body weight gain, hypoinsulinemia and hyperglycemia. Omega-3 fatty acid treatment did not have any significant effects on the above parameters. 3. Plasma triglyceride and cholesterol levels were significantly higher in diabetic rats compared with controls. 4. Omega-3 fatty acid treatment reduced the plasma triglyceride levels in the diabetic rats, whereas plasma cholesterol levels remained unaffected. 5. Norepinephrine (10 and 100 microM) stimulated inositol monophosphate (IP1) formation was significantly decreased in the diabetic rat heart compared with controls. Omega-3 fatty acid treatment had no significant effect on the norepinephrine-mediated IP1 formation in these rats. 6. Inositol bisphosphate (IP2) formation in response to 100 microM of norepinephrine was significantly lower in the diabetic rat heart; which was also not affected by omega-3 fatty acid treatment.

Effect of dietary omega-3 fatty acid on serum lipids, platelet function, and atherosclerosis in Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic rabbits

Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to lower plasma cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations in humans. However, the effects of these fatty acids on the interactions among lipid concentrations, platelet activity, and atherogenesis have not been characterized in humans or in animals with low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor deficiencies. To test the hypothesis that omega-3 fatty acids exert a protective effect in LDL receptor-deficient animals by lowering hyperlipidemia, reducing platelet aggregation, and reducing the severity of atherosclerosis, we evaluated young homozygous Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic (WHHL) rabbits that were fed omega-3 fatty acids. One-month-old male and female WHHL rabbits were placed on either a control diet (standard laboratory rabbit chow) or a diet supplemented with Menhaden fish oil (MFO), which contained eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Consumption measurements during the 5 months of the study indicated that the MFO-fed group received 150 to 200 mg/kg/day of EPA. Six-month-old, MFO-fed, female WHHL rabbits had significantly lower plasma concentrations of total cholesterol (582 +/- 20 mg/dl vs. 856 +/- 44 mg/dl, control, p less than 0.05) and triglycerides (266 +/- 21 mg/dl vs. 459 +/- 15 mg/dl, control, p less than 0.05), with lower serum/plasma lipoprotein concentrations [very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), LDL, high density lipoprotein (HDL)] compared to control female WHHL rabbits. Male MFO-fed rabbits had only significantly lower VLDLs (46 +/- 9 mg/dl) compared to control male WHHL rabbits (156 +/- 9 mg/dl, p less than 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Heterogeneity of low density lipoprotein responses to fish-oil supplementation in hypertriglyceridemic subjects

Previous studies have demonstrated a variable effect of fish oil on low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and apolipoprotein (apo) B levels, particularly in hypertriglyceridemic subjects. Since heterogeneity of LDL composition and metabolism in hypertriglyceridemic subjects is well described, the present study was undertaken to determine if the response of LDL to dietary fish-oil supplementation is dependent upon pretreatment differences in LDL composition. A single-blind, cross-over design was used with 18 hypertriglyceridemic subjects, who were given supplements of a safflower-oil placebo or a fish-oil concentrate (4.0 g omega-3 fatty acids; [F4 dose]) for 1 month. Sixteen subjects then received an additional month of fish-oil supplementation at a higher dose (7.5 g omega-3 fatty acids [F7.5 dose]). The initial LDL cholesterol/apo B ratio, an index of LDL composition, was correlated positively with changes in LDL apo B levels (F4.0 dose: r = 0.41, p = 0.06; F7.5 dose: r = 0.51, p = 0.03) and negatively with changes in LDL cholesterol concentrations (F4.0 dose: r = -0.51, p = 0.01; F7.5 dose: r = -0.50, p = 0.02). Twelve subjects with LDL cholesterol/apo B ratios above 1.4 had large increases in LDL apo B (51% at both doses, p less than 0.05) but much smaller changes in LDL cholesterol levels during fish-oil treatment. Six subjects with LDL cholesterol/apo B ratios below 1.4 showed a trend toward increased LDL cholesterol (12% increase from baseline at F4 dose, 10% increase from baseline at F7.5 dose, p greater than 0.05) but not in LDL apo B levels during fish-oil therapy. These data suggest that LDL responses to fish oil may be linked to underlying differences in LDL composition and, presumably, to differences in LDL metabolic behavior.

Slow desaturation and elongation of linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids as a rationale of eicosapentaenoic acid-rich diet to lower blood pressure and serum lipids in normal, hypertensive and hyperlipemic subjects

In normal, hypertensive and hyperlipemic subjects, diets supplemented with linoleic acid (LA) or alpha-linolenic acid (LNA) resulted in an increase of the corresponding fatty acids in serum lipids. However, their C20-derivatives, the prostaglandin precursors arachidonic acid (AA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), respectively, were not or only slightly augmented. On the other hand, an EPA-rich diet produced a marked increase of this fatty acid, especially in cholesterol esters. After this diet the decreases of blood pressure and serum lipids were more pronounced when compared with LA- and LNA-rich diets containing a 20-fold higher dose of the polyunsaturated fatty acids. The slow formation of AA and EPA from LA and LNA seems to be a characteristic finding in humans, being different from preferred laboratory animals, for instance, rats. This observation was independent of the presence of risk factors, like arterial hypertension or hyperlipoproteinemia (HLP).

Blood pressure- and lipid-lowering effect of mackerel and herring diet in patients with mild essential hypertension

Fourteen male patients with mild essential hypertension were put on a mackerel and herring diet within a prescribed isocaloric regimen in a cross-over design for 2 weeks. After mackerel diet eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA-C20:5, n-3) appeared more in cholesterol esters (1.7-11.0%), whereas docosahexaenoic acid (DHA-C22:6, n-3) was predominantly incorporated into serum triglycerides (1.0-8.3%). After herring diet, which contained half as much EPA and DHA, their increase was of minor degree. After mackerel diet serum triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and lecithin cholesterol acyl transferase (LCAT) activity were significantly decreased (by 28%, 9%, 14% and 14%, respectively), returning to the initial levels 3 months later. On the contrary, HDL cholesterol appeared significantly increased (by 12%). After herring diet the differences were not significant. Serum sodium was significantly lower (by 2%) at the end of the mackerel diet as compared to the initial values. On the other hand, uric acid in serum appeared transiently increased (by 24%) at the end of both dietary periods. A significant decrease (by 8%) in casual systolic blood pressure, measured in recumbent position, could be observed only at the end of the mackerel period. Moreover, the level of systolic and diastolic blood pressure before and during a standardized psychophysiological stress test was significantly lower after mackerel diet. Nevertheless, the increments after stress were similar. Plasma renin activity was increased (by 64%) after mackerel diet.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
