Highly selective ethanol vapour sensing materials for a new generation of gas sensors based on molecularly imprinted polymers

A simple gas sensor consisting of a molecularly imprinted polymer-carbon nanotube composite cast onto a screen-printed electrode has been developed with extremely high selectivity for ethanol vapour over methanol vapour. Ethanol gas sensors typically display selectivity for ethanol over methanol in the range 2-4 times, while the mean ratio of ethanol to methanol response observed with the described device was 672. This selectivity was achieved under ambient conditions. Additionally, the molecularly imprinted polymer was produced using reagents previously applied in the development of a device selective for methanol, with only the template being changed. This demonstrates the versatility of molecular imprinting and provides a foundation for their greater integration into future gas sensors.

Molecularly imprinted polymer nanoparticle-carbon nanotube composite electrochemical gas sensor for highly selective and sensitive detection of methanol vapour

An electrochemical gas sensor has been fabricated using molecularly imprinted polymer nanoparticles (nanoMIPs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes on screen-printed electrodes. Methanol vapour was chosen as the target due to its toxicity as its suitability as a model for more harmful pollutant gases. The sensor functions under ambient conditions and in the required concentration range, in contrast to all previous MIP-based gas sensors for methanol. The sensitivity of the sensor was greatly improved by the addition of multiwall carbon nanotubes, resulting in a limit of detection of approximately 10 ppm. The nanoMIPs provide an inherent selectivity for the target inherent in its design. Selectivity studies were performed with structurally analogous alcohols at various concentrations, demonstrating selectivity for methanol 12.1 times that for ethanol at 2 mmol dm-3 and 4.2 times that for ethanol at 1 mmol dm-3. Interactions with isopropanol and n-propanol were found to be non-specific, and the response to water was negligible. This demonstrates an improvement over previous methanol gas sensors based on molecularly imprinted polymers. No response was observed with carbon nanotubes alone, and no selectivity was observed with non-imprinted equivalents of the nanoMIP sensor. The resulting device is by far the most practical MIP-based instrument for methanol gas sensing thus far described in the literature, being the only example capable of functioning at the necessary methanol vapour concentrations and at the required temperature and humidity. With the selectivity and sensitivity described and the simple design, the developed device provides a substantial advance in the field of molecularly imprinted gas sensors.

Dual-pipet techniques for probing ionic reactions

Novel dual-pipet electrodes prepared by pulling borosilicate theta-tubing are described. Three types of electrochemical experiments employing such devices include the following: (1) generation/collection experiments in which ions are ejected from one of two micropipets ("generator") into the external solution and collected at the second pipet ("collector"), (2) measurements of ohmic current-voltage curves, and (3) ion-transfer voltammetry "in the air". The first setup is used for probing ion transfers at the interface between two immiscible liquids and homogeneous reactions in solution involving ionic species. Such experiments are reported for two model processes, i.e., simple and facilitated transfers of potassium between aqueous and organic phases and complexation of potassium with dibenzo-18-crown-6 in organic solution. The second arrangement is used for characterization of theta-pipets. The last arrangement can be useful for preparation of gas sensors. The possibility of measuring the concentration of volatile substances (e.g., ammonia and nitric acid) in the gaseous phase has been demonstrated.

Imaging of biological macromolecules on mica in humid air by scanning electrochemical microscopy

Imaging of DNA, keyhole limpet hemocyanin, mouse monoclonal IgG, and glucose oxidase on a mica substrate has been accomplished by scanning electrochemical microscopy with a tungsten tip. The technique requires the use of a high relative humidity to form a thin film of water on the mica surface that allows electrochemical reactions to take place at the tip and produce a faradaic current (approximately 1 pA) that can be used to control tip position. The effect of relative humidity and surface pretreatment with buffer solutions on the ionic conductivity of a mica surface was investigated to find appropriate conditions for imaging. Resolution of the order of 1 nm was obtained.
