A seasonal study of microsomal mixed-function oxidase components in insecticide-resistant and susceptible mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis

Female-Biased Sex Ratios and Delayed Puberty in Two Fish Species with Different Ecologies in an Anthropogenically Affected Urban Lake

In aquatic ecosystems, endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) pose a growing concern for their potential adverse effects on fish reproduction and development. In lake Pyhäjärvi, located in the urban boreal region of Tampere, Finland, a significant number of sexually immature pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) individuals have been identified in size and age categories that are expected to be sexually mature. To explore if this phenomenon is attributed to estrogenic endocrine disruption, we conducted a comprehensive study comparing fish from lake Pyhäjärvi with those from a nearby reference lake, lake Näsijärvi. Roach (Rutilus rutilus), known for its susceptibility to EDCs, was also included for comparison. We examined various parameters in both pikeperch and roach, including size, condition factor, age, reproductive indicators, biometric indices and gonadal histology. We also assessed liver vitellogenin mRNA levels and genetic sex in roach, and measured estrogen levels in lake waters and wastewater treatment plant effluents. Results revealed that approximately one-third of fish in both species exhibited sexual immaturity in lake Pyhäjärvi, with a female-biased sex ratio. Surprisingly, we found no signs of estrogenic endocrine disruption, indicated by the absence of intersex fish in both species. Furthermore, vitellogenin levels in roach closely resembled those in the reference lake. Estrogens were undetectable in the lake waters, suggesting that factors other than estrogenic EDCs, including other potential endocrine disruptors such as PCBs or heavy metals, may be influencing delayed sexual maturity and skewed sex ratios. Further inquiry is needed to pinpoint these underlying causes. Our study provides essential baseline information on fish sexual development in lake Pyhäjärvi, emphasizing the need for ongoing monitoring and research to understand delayed sexual maturity and biased sex ratios. This is vital given the increasing concern about EDC impacts on aquatic ecosystems and the necessity for effective management strategies to protect these ecosystems' health and integrity.

Morphological, biochemical, and histopathological indices and contaminant burdens of cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) at three hazardous waste sites near Houston, Texas, USA

Male cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) were studied at three industrial waste sites near Houston, Texas, to determine whether various morphological, biochemical, and histopathological indices provided evidence of contaminant exposure and toxic insult. Only modest changes were detected in cotton rats residing at waste sites compared with reference sites. No single parameter was consistently altered, except hepatic cytochrome P-450 concentration which was lower ( [Formula: see text] ) at two waste sites, and tended to be lower ( [Formula: see text] ) at a third waste site. Elevated petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations were detected in rats at one waste site, but contaminant burdens of rats from the other sites were unremarkable. Unlike rats captured in summer, those trapped in winter exhibited hepatocellular hypertrophy and up to a 65% increase in liver: body weight ratio, cytochrome P-450 concentration, and activities of aniline hydroxylase, aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase, and glutathione S-transferase. Although genotoxicity has been previously documented in cotton rats residing at two of the waste sites, biomarkers in the present study provided little evidence of exposure and damage.

Review and perspective on the use of mixed-function oxygenase enzymes in biological monitoring

It is often suggested that changes in simple biochemical/physiological responses may be useful for predicting the impacts of pollutants at population and community levels of biological organization. There are serious conceptual constraints to such a thesis and its seems likely that such simple responses can go no further than serving as early warning systems for delineating potential areas of pollutant impact--areas which (if shown to be significant in size) can then be subjected to more detailed population and community type studies. Environmental testing is a prerequisite for any response suggested to have value as a biological monitoring index and the induction of mixed-function oxygenase (MFO) enzymes has now been validated in a large number of field studies worldwide. Investigations have progressed from documenting induction near localized sources of hydrocarbon contamination to more diffuse sources of mixed organic pollution originating from industrial and domestic sources. Studies in the Great Lakes and Europe have demonstrated that the induction of MFO enzymes is a biological response of sufficient sensitivity to discriminate water quality differences over broad geographical areas. We suggest that as an early warning system, the induction of these enzymes can fulfill the requirement of "most sensitive biological response" for assessing a variety of organic pollution conditions. Given the high level of sensitivity of the MFO enzyme response, negative as well as positive field trials can be of value in addressing concerns about the toxicological significance of "high-profile" chemicals (and potent inducers) such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and organochlorines. MFO enzyme induction can also be an economical tool for environmental managers for reacting to real or perceived concerns about pollution such as effects on commercial fish stocks at sites of petroleum hydrocarbon development in the oceans.

Modulation of the immune response in fish

This is a brief overview of the field of immune modulation in fish. Special attention is given to the effects of biological rhythms on the immune responses of animals. Biological rhythms in fish appear to be poorly studied and the effects of such rhythms on fish immune responses needs to be evaluated. Implications for research on the modulation of fish immune responses are discussed.
