Measurements of ozone and other radiatively active gases at Mace Head in the Republic of Ireland

The influence of mid-latitude cyclones on European background surface ozone

The relationship between springtime mid-latitude cyclones and background ozone (O₃) is explored using a combination of observational and reanalysis data sets. First, the relationship between surface O₃ observations at two rural monitoring sites on the west coast of Europe - Mace Head, Ireland and Monte Velho, Portugal - and cyclone track frequency in the surrounding regions is examined. Second, detailed case study examination of four individual mid-latitude cyclones and the influence of the associated frontal passage on surface O₃ is performed. Cyclone tracks have a greater influence on the O₃ measurements at the more northern coastal European station, Mace Head, located within the main North Atlantic (NA) storm track. In particular, when cyclones track north of 53° N, there is a significant relationship with high levels of surface O₃ (> 75th percentile). The further away a cyclone is from the NA storm track, the more likely it will be associated with both high and low (< 25th percentile) levels of O₃ at the observation site during the cyclone's life cycle. The results of the four case studies demonstrate a) the importance of the passage of a cyclone's cold front in relation to surface O₃ measurements, b) the ability of mid-latitude cyclones to bring down high levels of O₃ from the stratosphere and c) that accompanying surface high pressure systems and their associated transport pathways play an important role in the temporal variability of surface O₃. The main source of high O₃ to these two sites in springtime is from the stratosphere, either from direct injection into the cyclone or associated with aged airstreams from decaying downstream cyclones that can become entrained and descend toward the surface within new cyclones over the NA region.

Air chemistry and terrestrial gas emissions: a global perspective

The troposphere is that atmospheric region which occupies the lowest 8-13 km or so, between the Earth’s surface and the tropopause, the boundary with the stratosphere. It contains the bulk of the trace gas burden of the atmosphere and has an active chemistry which removes many of the trace gases and pollutants emitted by both terrestrial processes and by human activities. The hydroxyl radical, OH, plays an important role in cleansing the troposphere by oxidizing trace gases to harmless products or to those more readily removed from the atmospheric circulation. The distribution of hydroxyl radicals defines the oxidizing capacity of the troposphere and is itself controlled by the trace gas composition and hence by terrestrial gas emissions. This review identifies the important roles played by the terrestrial source gases: methane, carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen and isoprene in controlling the fast photochemical balance and oxidizing capacity of the troposphere.

Detecting ozone and demonstrating its phytotoxicity in forested areas of Poland: a pilot study

Ambient concentrations of ozone (O(3)) were measured and O(3) phytotoxicity to tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) was demonstrated in several forest locations in Poland during a pilot study from July-October, 1991. At southern and central locations in Poland, the 24-hour average O(3) concentrations measured with a UV absorption photometer were in the range of 32-55 ppb, and the corresponding 1-hour maxima in the range of 39-83 ppb. At these locations longer period (four to fifteen days) average concentrations were determined using O(3) passive samplers (DGA, Inc.) and were reaching 60 ppb, while at Bialowieza in eastern Poland O(3) concentrations averaged less than 40 ppb. In Szarow, near the Niepolomice Forest in southern Poland, 1-hour O(3) maxima estimated from the data obtained using passive samplers were about 105 ppb in early September. At several locations in southern and central Poland, extensive O(3) injury was determined on O(3)-sensitive Bel W-3 tobacco plants; such injury did not occur in the Bialowieza Forest of eastern Poland. The results of this pilot study indicate that O(3) is present at phytotoxic levels in southern and central Poland.
