Polyamines: Α bioenergetic smart switch for plant protection and development

The present review highlights the bioenergetic role of polyamines in plant protection and development and proposes a universal model for describing polyamine-mediated stress responses. Any stress condition induces an excitation pressure on photosystem II by reforming the photosynthetic apparatus. To control this phenomenon, polyamines act directly on the molecular structure and function of the photosynthetic apparatus as well as on the components of the chemiosmotic proton-motive force (ΔpH/Δψ), thus regulating photochemical (qP) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) of energy. The review presents the mechanistic characteristics that underline the key role of polyamines in the structure, function, and bioenergetics of the photosynthetic apparatus upon light adaptation and/or under stress conditions. By following this mechanism, it is feasible to make stress-sensitive plants to be tolerant by simply altering their polyamine composition (especially the ratio of putrescine to spermine), either chemically or by light regulation.

Polyamines in Microalgae: Something Borrowed, Something New

Microalgae of different evolutionary origins are typically found in rivers, lakes, and oceans, providing more than 45% of global primary production. They provide not only a food source for animals, but also affect microbial ecosystems through symbioses with microorganisms or secretion of some metabolites. Derived from amino acids, polyamines are present in almost all types of organisms, where they play important roles in maintaining physiological functions or against stress. Microalgae can produce a variety of distinct polyamines, and the polyamine content is important to meet the physiological needs of microalgae and may also affect other species in the environment. In addition, some polyamines produced by microalgae have medical or nanotechnological applications. Previous studies on several types of microalgae have indicated that the putative polyamine metabolic pathways may be as complicated as the genomes of these organisms, which contain genes originating from plants, animals, and even bacteria. There are also several novel polyamine synthetic routes in microalgae. Understanding the nature of polyamines in microalgae will not only improve our knowledge of microalgal physiology and ecological function, but also provide valuable information for biotechnological applications.

Polyamines in macroalgae: advances and future perspectives

Polyamines (PA) are ubiquitous, small, aliphatic cations found in all living cells. In recent years the importance of these molecules for macroalgae has become evident and a substantial body of knowledge has been accumulated over the last three decades. This review summarizes research on the PAs found in macroalgae, their transport and metabolism, and their biological significance in processes such as cell division, chloroplast development, and reproduction. The involvement of PAs in environmental stress responses in macroalgae is also addressed. The discussion of PAs in this review not only demonstrates that PAs play an important role in physiological processes in macroalgae, but also clearly demonstrates the similarities and differences between PA metabolism in macroalgae and higher plants. Key areas for future research are also discussed.

Ozone impact on the photosynthetic apparatus and the protective role of polyamines

One of the primary plant mechanisms protecting leaf cells against enhanced atmospheric ozone is the accumulation of polyamines, generally observed as an increase in putrescine level, and in particular its bound form to thylakoid membranes. Ozone-sensitive plants of tobacco (cultivar Bel W3) in contrast to ozone-tolerant Bel B, are not able to increase their endogenous thylakoid membrane-bound putrescine when they are exposed to an atmosphere with enhanced ozone concentration, resulting in reduction of their photosynthetic rates and consequently reduction in plant biomass formation. In comparison to the tolerant cultivar Bel B, a prolongation of ozone exposure thus can lead to typical visible symptoms (necrotic spots) in leaves of the sensitive plant. Exogenously manipulated increase of the cellular putrescine levels of the ozone-sensitive Bel W3 is sufficient to revert these effects, whereas a reduction in endogenous putrescine levels of the tolerant cultivar Bel B renders them sensitive to ozone treatment. The results of this work reveal a regulator role for polyamines in adaptation of the photosynthetic apparatus and consequently to its protection in an environment polluted by ozone.

Effects of exogenous polyamines on growth, toxicity, and toxin profile of dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum

The effect of exogenous polyamines (cadaverine, putrescine, norspermidine, spermidine, and spermine) on the growth, toxicity, and toxin profile of the dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum T1 was examined. It was found that cadaverine at concentrations of 0.1-2.0 mumol/L enhanced the growth of A. minutum T1. Putrescine and norspermidine at a low level (0.1 mumol/L) also promoted the algal growth. Spermidine depressed the algal growth. However, the cell toxicity levels of A. minutum T1 cultured with or without cadaverine, putrescine, norspermidine, and spermidine were almost the same. The toxic components of A. minutum T1 were GTXs 1-4 only, and GTXs 1 and 4 were predominant (74.6 +/- 7.1%) in all cultures. On the other hand, spermine did not effect the growth of A. minutum T1, though it decreased the cell toxicity and the ratio of GTX 2 + GTX 3 (15.0 +/- 6.6%).
