Abstract
Nowadays, ionic liquids (ILs) functionalized cyclodextrins (CDs) have drawn increasing attention in chiral separation. Herein, a novel β-CD derivative functionalized by L-histidinium IL, mono-6-deoxy-6-L-histidinium-β-cyclodextrin chloride (L-HMCDCl), was synthesized for the first time and utilized for enantioseparation of nefopam and chlorphenamine in capillary electrophoresis. The L-HMCDCl exhibited superior enantioselectivity compared with native β-CD. The effect of some key parameters such as chiral selector concentration, buffer pH and applied voltage on the enantioseparation was investigated in detail. In the interest of the chiral discrimination mechanism and the enhanced enantioselectivity of L-HMCDCl, molecular modeling with AutoDock was employed to study the interaction, which was in good agreement with experimental results.

Abstract
Since decades, cyclodextrins are one of the most powerful selectors in chiral capillary electrophoresis for the enantioseparation of diverse organic compounds. This review concerns papers published over the last decade (from 2009 until nowadays), dealing with the capillary electrophoretic application of single isomer cyclodextrin derivatives in chiral separations. Following a brief overview of their synthetic approaches, the inventory of the neutral, negatively and positively charged (including both permanently ionic and pH-tunable ionizable substituents) and zwitterionic CD derivatives is presented, with insights to underlying structural aspects by NMR spectroscopy and molecular modeling. CE represents an ideal tool to study the weak, non-covalent supramolecular interactions. The published methods are reviewed in the light of enantioselectivity, enantiomer migration order and the fine-tuning of enantiodiscrimination by the substitution pattern of the single entity selector molecules, which is hardly possible for their randomly substituted counterparts. All the reviewed publications herein support that cyclodextrin-based chiral capillary electrophoresis seems to remain a popular choice in pharmaceutical and biomedical analysis.

Abstract
Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) modified with β-cyclodextrin and mono-6-deoxy-6-(1-methylimidazolium)-β-cyclodextrin tosylate (an ionic liquid), which called MNP-β-CD and MNP-β-CD-IL, were coated into the capillary inner wall. Compared to an uncoated capillary, the new systems show good reproducibility and durability. The systems based on the use of MNP-β-CD or MNP-β-CD-IL as stationary phases were established for enantioseparation of Dns-modified amino acids. Improved resolutions were obtained for both CEC systems. Primary parameters such as running buffer pH value and applied voltage were systematically optimized in order to obtain optimal enantioseparations. Under the optimized conditions, the capillaries exhibited excellent chiral recognition ability for six Dns-amino acids (the DL-forms of alanine, leucine, lsoleucine, valine, methionine, glutamic acid) and provided a promising way for the preparation of chiral column. Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) are most commonly used chiral selectors in capillary electrophoresis (CE). Although the use of neutral CDs and its derivatives have shown to resolve plethora of charged enantiomers, they cannot resolve neutral enantiomers. The use of ionic liquids (ILs) surfactants forming successful complex with CDs present itself an opportunity to resolve neutral enantiomers. In this work, the effect of IL head groups and their complexation ability with heptakis (2,3,6-tri-O-methyl)-β-cyclodextrin (TM-β-CD) was studied for the separation of neutral enantiomers by CE. First, cationic IL type surfactants with different chiral head groups were synthesized. Physicochemical properties such as critical micelle concentration were determined by surface tension, whereas aggregation and polarity were determined by fluorescence spectroscopy. The complexation ability of ILs with TM-β-CD was characterized in the gas phase by CE-mass spectrometry. The influence of the type of ILs head group and its concentration on chiral resolution, resolution per unit time and selectivity were investigated for four structurally diverse neutral compounds. The binding constants of the neutral analytes to the IL-CD complex were estimated by y-reciprocal method. The hydrophobicity of the side chain of the IL head group displayed significant effect on the binding constants and enantioseparations.

Abstract
Methoxyethylamine monosubstituted β-cyclodextrin, mono-6(A)-(2-methoxyethyl-1-ammonium)-6(A)-β-cyclodextrin chloride (MEtAMCD), is synthesized and analytically characterized. Bearing a methoxy group in cyclodextrin rim, MEtAMCD exhibits outstanding enantioselectivities toward ampholytic and acidic racemates in capillary electrophoresis. Driven by inclusion complexation, electrostatic interactions and/or hydrogen bonding, the enantioseparation of MEtAMCD is found to be strongly dependent on various separation parameters including buffer pH, cyclodextrin concentration, applied voltage, separation temperature and organic solvent additives. MEtAMCD demonstrates as a versatile cationic chiral selector for the studied 26 acidic and ampholytic enantiomers.

Abstract
To separate and determine oleanolic acid and ursolic acid, a rapid and accurate HPLC using γ-CD as the mobile phase additive was developed. The effect of CD nature and concentration, and the acidity of the mobile phase on the chromatographic behavior of two bioactive triterpenes were systematically studied. Two bioactive triterpenes were completely separated (R = 3.11) on a Kromasil(®) C(18) column (150×4.6 mm id, 5 μm) with the mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile/0.1% phosphoric acid with 2 mM γ-CD as the mobile phase modifier (60:40, v/v). The flow rate was set at 1.0 mL/min and the eluent was detected at 210 nm for two bioactive triterpenes. The linearity of the method was excellent (r=0.9999) over the studied range of 6-300 μg/mL for oleanolic acid, and 12-600 μg/mL for ursolic acid. The LOD and LOQ were 1.5 and 5.0, 1.0 and 3.0 μg/mL for oleanolic acid and ursolic acid, respectively. The optimized method was successfully applied to separate and determine two bioactive triterpenes in five Chinese herbs. It is concluded that this method could be used for rapid and accurate qualitative and quantitative analysis of the two bioactive triterpenes in Chinese herbs.

Abstract
A comprehensive survey of recent developments and applications of capillary electromigration techniques for enantioseparations from January 2006 to June 2010 is presented. The techniques include capillary electrophoresis, chip capillary electrophoresis and capillary electrochromatography. The separation principles and the chiral recognition mechanisms are discussed. Additionally, on-line preconcentrations in chiral capillary electrophoresis are also reviewed.

Abstract
Capillary EKC has been established as a versatile and robust CE method for the separation of enantiomers. Within the chiral selectors added to the BGE CDs continue as the most widely used selectors due to their structural variety and commercial availability. This is reflected in the large number of practical applications of CDs to analytical enantioseparations that have been reported between January 2006 and January 2008, the period of time covered by this review. Most of these applications cover aspects of life sciences such as drug analysis, bioanalysis, environmental analysis, or food analysis. Moreover, new CD derivatives have been developed in an attempt to achieve altered enantioselectivities and to further broaden the application range. Finally, efforts will be summarized that aim at an understanding of the molecular level of the chiral recognition between CDs and the analytes.
