Room-temperature phosphorescence and fluorescence nanocomposites as a ratiometric chemosensor for high-contrast and selective detection of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene. Anal Chim Acta 2023; 1282:341930. Abstract
Reports on using complementary colours for high-contrast ratiometric assays are limited to date. In this work, graphitized carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets and mercaptoethylamine (MEA) capped Mn-doped ZnS QDs were fabricated by liquid exfoliation of bulk g-C3N4, and by a coprecipitation and postmodification strategies, respectively. Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots were deposited onto g-C3N4 nanosheets through an electrostatic self-assembly to form new nanocomposites (denoted as Mn-ZnS QDs@g-C3N4). Mn-ZnS QDs@g-C3N4 can emit a pair of complementary colour light, namely, orange room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) at 582 nm and blue fluorescence at 450 nm. After 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) dosing into Mn-ZnS QDs@g-C3N4 aqueous solution, and pairing with MEA to generate TNT anions capable of quenching the emission of Mn-doped ZnS QDs, the fluorescence colours of the solution changed from orange to blue across white, exhibiting unusual high-contrast fluorescence images. The developed ratiometric chemosensor showed very good linearity in the range of 0-12 μM TNT with a limit of detection of 0.56 μM and an RSD of 6.4 % (n = 5). Also, the ratiometric probe had an excellent selectivity for TNT over other nitroaromatic compounds, which was applied in the ratiometric test paper to image TNT in water, and TNT sensing under phosphorescence mode to efficiently avoid background interference. A high-contrast dual-emission platform for selective ratiometric detection of TNT was therefore established.

Abstract
In recent years, the determination of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) explosive residues in various matrices has attracted great interest from the perspective of national security and public health. Here, a fluorescent polyethylenimine capped carbon quantum dots (PEI-C-dots) probe was synthesized by a microwave-assisted technique using polyethylenimine and citric acid precursors and used to detect TNT. The sensing mechanism of TNT is based on fluorescence quenching as a result of the donor-acceptor interaction between Meisenheimer anion form of TNT and PEI on the PEI-C-dots surface. The fluorescence quantum yield of the synthesized PEI-C-dots was 54% and the detection limit for TNT was 93 μg/L. It was observed that neither the nitramine group (HMX and RDX) explosives with similar structures nor common soil ions and camouflage agents interfered with the determination of TNT. The interference effect of picric acid was eliminated by removing it with a basic anion exchanger before the determination. This nanosensor allows rapid, simple, selective, and sensitive determination of TNT residues in complex matrices and has the potential to be converted into a kit format.

Electrochemical determination of nitroaromatic explosives using glassy carbon/multi walled carbon nanotube/polyethyleneimine electrode coated with gold nanoparticles. Talanta 2022; 238:122990. Abstract
The on site/in field detection of explosives has become a rising priority for homeland security and counter-terrorism measures. This work presents the sensitive detection of nitroaromatic explosives using glassy carbon/multi-walled carbon nanotubes/polyethyleneimine (GC/MWCNTs/PEI) electrode coated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). MWCNTs and PEI could be well dispersed in ethanol/water solution, giving rise to a thin and homogeneous film on GCE. The GC/MWCNTs/PEI electrode was electrochemically modified with AuNPs and used for the differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) detection of nitroaromatics. The enhanced detection sensitivities were achieved through π-π and charge-transfer (CT) interactions between the electron-deficient nitroaromatic explosives and donor amine groups in PEI to which gold nanoparticles were linked, providing increased analyte affinity toward the modified GCE. Calibration curves of current intensity versus concentration were linear in the range of 0.05-8 mg L-1 for TNT, 0.2-4 mg L-1 for 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT), 1-20 mg L-1 for 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP), 0.25-10 mg L-1 for picric acid (PA), and 0.05-4 mg L-1 for 2,4,6-trinitrophenyl-N-methylnitramine (tetryl) with detection limits (LOD) of 15 μg L-1, 45 μg L-1, 135 μg L-1, 30 μg L-1, and 12 μg L-1, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of nitroaromatics in synthetic explosive mixtures and military composite explosives (comp B and octol). The electrochemical method was not affected by possible interferents of electroactive camouflage materials and common soil ions. Method validation was performed against the reference LC-MS method on TNT and PA-contaminated clay soil samples separately.

Abstract
In this work, amino functionalized CdSe-silica core-shell nanoparticles (NH2-CdSe@SiO2 NPs) were constructed as probe to detect picric acid (PA). The CdSe QDs were embedded in SiO2 nanoparticles and modified with amino groups on the surface. The nitro explosives are electron deficient in nature, which will have stronger affinity for amines and resulted in fluorescence quenching of quantum dots. It was proved that this strategy is selective, easy and sensitive enough for sensing PA with a detection limit of 0.5 × 10-7 M.

Abstract
The study is devoted to the electrochemical detection of trace explosives on boron-doped diamond/graphene nanowall electrodes (B:DGNW). The electrodes were fabricated in a one-step growth process using chemical vapour deposition without any additional modifications. The electrochemical investigations were focused on the determination of the important nitroaromatic explosive compounds, 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and 2,4,6-trinitroanisole (TNA). The distinct reduction peaks of both studied compounds were observed regardless of the pH value of the solution. The reduction peak currents were linearly related to the concentration of TNT and TNA in the range from 0.05-15 ppm. Nevertheless, two various linear trends were observed, attributed respectively to the adsorption processes at low concentrations up to the diffusional character of detection for larger contamination levels. The limit of detection of TNT and TNA is equal to 73 ppb and 270 ppb, respectively. Moreover, the proposed detection strategy has been applied under real conditions with a significant concentration of interfering compounds - in landfill leachates. The proposed bare B:DGNW electrodes were revealed to have a high electroactive area towards the voltammetric determination of various nitroaromatic compounds with a high rate of repeatability, thus appearing to be an attractive nanocarbon surface for further applications.

Abstract
Zika virus (ZIKV) is a globally emerging mosquito-transmitted flavivirus that can cause severe fetal abnormalities, including microcephaly. As such, highly sensitive, specific, and cost-effective diagnostic methods are urgently needed. Here, we report a novel electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL)-based immunoassay for ultrasensitive and specific detection of ZIKV in human biological fluids. We loaded polystyrene beads (PSB) with a large number of ECL labels and conjugated them with anti-ZIKV monoclonal antibodies to generate anti-ZIKV-PSBs. These anti-ZIKV-PSBs efficiently captured ZIKV in solution forming ZIKV-anti-ZIKV-PSB complexes, which were subjected to measurement of ECL intensity after further magnetic beads separation. Our results show that the anti-ZIKV-PSBs can capture as little as 1 PFU of ZIKV in 100 μl of saline, human plasma, or human urine. This platform has the potential for development as a cost-effective, rapid and ultrasensitive assay for the detection of ZIKV and possibly other viruses in clinical diagnosis, epidemiologic and vector surveillance, and laboratory research.

Abstract
In this work, PtPd concave nanocubes anchored on graphene nanoribbons (PtPd-rGONRs) were successfully fabricated through a hydrothermal process. The structural characterizations confirmed that PtPd concave cubes with an average size of around 11 nm have been successfully synthesized and they are uniformly assembled on the surface of rGONRs. The electrochemical measurements demonstrated that the PtPd-rGONRs composite-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) shows much enhanced current signals for TNT reduction, which is 4 and 12-fold higher than rGONRs and bare glassy carbon electrode, respectively. The PtPd-rGONRs exhibited a wide linear range for TNT detection from 0.01 to 3 ppm with the sensing limit of 0.8 ppb. Moreover, the PtPd-rGONRs showed excellent detection stability for the determination of TNT. Most importantly, the PtPd-rGONRs-based electrochemical detection platform can be successfully applied to TNT detection in tap water and real lake water samples. The present study indicates that graphene nanoribbon-supported nanocrystals are promising in designing high performance electrochemical sensors for explosives detection.

Abstract
2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene (TNT) forms a red-colored Meisenheimer complex with 3-aminopropyltrenthoxysilane (APTES) both in solution and on solid phase. The TNT-APTES complex is unique since it forms yellow-colored complexes with 2,4,6-trinitrophenol and 4-nitrophenol, and no complex with 2,4-dinitrotoluene. The absorption spectrum of TNT-APTES has two absorption bands at 530 and 650 nm, while APTES complexes with 2,4,6-trinitrophenol and 4-nitrophenol have absorption maxima at around 420 nm, and no absorption change for 2,4-dinitrotoluene. The TNT-APTES complex facilitates the exchange of the TNT-CH3 proton/deuteron with solvent molecules. The red color of TNT-APTES is immediately visible at 1 µM of TNT.

Abstract
The electrochemical reduction of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) was investigated using films of vanadium dioxide. Three distinct reduction peaks were observed in the potential range of -0.50 to -0.90 V (vs an Ag/AgCl reference electrode), corresponding to the electrochemical reduction of the three nitro-groups on the TNT molecule. Adsorptive stripping voltammetry was performed to achieve detection down to 1 μg/L (4.4 nM), revealing a linear response to TNT concentration. These results are the first describing the use of VO2 films as an electrochemical sensor and open new avenues for further electrochemical research using this unique material.

Abstract
In this paper, a novel near-infrared fluorescence probe for the determination of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) was developed based on bovine serum albumin (BSA) coated CuInS2 quantum dot (QD). Water-soluble CuInS2 QDs were directly synthesized in aqueous solution with mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) as stablizers, and it was coated by BSA via an amide link interacting with carboxyl of the MPA-capped CuInS2 QDs. The obtained BSA coated CuInS2 QDs (BSA-CuInS2 QDs) can bind TNP in water via the acid-base pairing interaction between electron-rich amino groups of BSA and electron-deficient nitroaromatic rings, and leading the fluorescence quenching of BSA-CuInS2 QDs. The quenched fluorescence intensity of BSA-CuInS2 QDs was proportional to the concentration of TNP in the concentration ranges from 50 nmol/L to 3.0 μmol/L. The detection limit (LOD) for TNP was 28 nmol/L. The developed fluorescence probe showed a excellent resistant to interference of metal ions such as K(+), Na(+), Zn(2+), Cu(2+), Hg(2+), and Pb(2+). The developed biosensor was applied to the determination of TNP in spiked water samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract
An electrochemiluminescent (ECL) aptasensor was fabricated and used for the amplified detection of thrombin (TB) based on DNA supersandwich structure. Herein, hollow gold nanospheres (HGNPs) were firstly employed as effective tag-carriers for the immobilization of detection aptamer (TBA 2) to form the HGNPs labeled TBA 2 (HGNPs-TBA 2). Subsequently, streptavidin (SA) was used to block the non-specific binding sites of HGNPs-TBA 2 as well as to supply binding sites, which could further introduce numerous initiator DNA strands (bio-S1) via biotin-streptavidin specific interaction. Next, bio-S1 could in situ trigger hybridization chain reaction (HCR) to create a long nicked double helices analogous (dsDNA) in the present of ssDNA S2 and ssDNA S3 (S3 is partially complementary to the S2) to obtain the DNA supersandwich structure. Furthermore, Ru(phen)3(2+), a well-known ECL luminophore, could be intercalated into the grooves of dsDNA (Ru-dsDNA) to form the Ru-dsDNA-SA-HGNPs-TBA 2 bioconjugate. As a result, the target of TB was sandwiched between Ru-dsDNA-SA-HGNPs-TBA 2 and TBA 1. In this strategy, numerous Ru(phen)3(2+) could be immobilized on the electrode based on the supersandwich structure, resulting in an increased ECL signal output. A supersandwich ECL assay for TB detection was developed with excellent sensitivity of a large concentration variation from 5fM to 50pM and a detection limit of 1.6fM.

Abstract
Trinitrotoluene, usually known as TNT, is a kind of chemical explosive with hazardous and toxic effects on the environment and human health. National and societal security concerns have dictated an increasing need for the analytical detection of TNT with rapidity, high sensitivity and low cost. This work demonstrates a novel method using L-cysteine-capped CdTe quantum dots (QDs) to assay TNT, based on the formation of a Meisenheimer complex between TNT and cysteine. The fluorescence (FL) of quantum dots quench because electrons of the QDs transfer to the TNT molecules via the formation of a Meisenheimer complex. TNT can be detected with a low detection limit of 1.1 nM. Studies on the selectivity of this method show that only TNT can generate an intense signal response. The synthesized QDs are excellent nanomaterials for TNT detection. In addition, TNT in soil samples is also analyzed by the proposed method.

Abstract
A new approach was established to construct a sandwich-type electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor by using Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)-doped silica (abbreviated as Ru-SiO(2)) nanoparticles to label secondary antibody. Firstly, carboxylate-terminated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were modified on the electrode to bond with avidin. Subsequently, biotinylated antibodies were immobilized on the surface of the electrode by employing the specific interaction of biotin/avidin and the non-covalent and covalent conjugation function of MWCNTs. Later, the electrode was incubated with antigen of mouse IgG and then reacted with the secondary antibody which was labeled by Ru-SiO(2). Accordingly, through the ECL response of Ru-SiO(2) and tripropylamine (TPA), a strong ECL signal was obtained and an amplification analysis of protein interaction was achieved. The present immunosensor showed a wide linear range of 0.05-200.00 ng mL(-1) for detecting mouse IgG, with a low detection limit of 17 pg mL(-1). There was a 4-300-fold improvement in detection limit compared with other similar studies. The morphologies of Ru-SiO(2) nanoparticles were characterized by using transmission electronic microscopy (TEM). The fabrication process of the immunosensor was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and the performance of the immunosensor was monitored with an electrochemiluminescence analyzer. This new strategy for preparation of the ECL immunosensor could be easily realized and has potential application in ultrasensitive bioassays.
