Thin-film oxygen sensors using a luminescent polynuclear gold(I) complex

Multifunctional Platform Based on a Copper(I) Complex and NaYF4:Tm3+,Yb3+ Upconverting Nanoparticles Immobilized into a Polystyrene Matrix: Downshifting and Upconversion Oxygen Sensing

This work presents an innovative approach to obtain a multifunctional hybrid material operating via combined anti-Stokes (upconversion) and Stokes (downshifting) emissions for oxygen gas sensing and related functionalities. The material is based on a Cu(I) complex exhibiting thermally activated delayed fluorescence emission (TADF) and infrared-to-visible upconverting Tm³⁺/Yb³⁺-doped NaYF₄ nanoparticles supported in a polystyrene (PS) matrix. Excitation of the hybrid material at 980 nm leads to efficient transfer of Tm³⁺ emission in the ultraviolet/blue region to the Cu(I) complex and consequently intense green emission (560 nm) of the latter. Additionally, the green emission of the complex can also be directly generated with excitation at 360 nm. Independently of the excitation wavelength, the emission intensity is efficiently suppressed by the presence of molecular oxygen and the quenching rate is properly characterized by the Stern-Volmer plots. The results indicate that the biocompatible hybrid material can be applied as an efficient O₂ sensor operating via near-infrared or ultraviolet excitation, unlike most optical oxygen sensors currently available which only work in downshifting mode.

Ppm-level oxygen detection system based on deep-ultraviolet-absorption spectroscopy

Oxygen is a gas essential to human life and industrial processes. Here, we developed a highly sensitive oxygen gas sensor based on deep ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy between 180 and 200 nm. The implemented method relies on differential absorption spectra extracted from the obtained high-resolution absorption spectra. The detection capability was greatly improved (six-fold) by eliminating air from the open optical path, achieved by purging the entire system with pure nitrogen. A linear relationship was obtained between the optical parameter and the oxygen concentration with a slope of 0.107 and determination coefficient of 0.999. A detection limit of 24 ppm per meter was determined with a response time of 25 s. Good repeatability (standarddeviation=16ppm) and stability were confirmed. We demonstrated that this system can detect ppm oxygen levels with high sensitivity and low uncertainty.

Pyrene-Capped CdSe@ZnS Nanoparticles as Sensitive Flexible Oxygen Sensors in Non-Aqueous Media

A flexible, highly sensitive sensor of oxygen in non-aqueous solvents is described. It consists of CdSe/ZnS nanoparticles decorated with a considerable number of pyrene units, thus making the formation of the pyrene excimer possible. The emission of the pyrene excimer and that of the nanoparticle are suitably separated from each other and also from the excitation wavelength. This sensor can be applied as a ratiometric oxygen sensor by using the linear response of the pyrene excimer lifetime combined with the linear response of the nanoparticle excited state lifetime. This nanohybrid has been assayed in seven media with different dielectric constants and viscosities over the whole oxygen concentration range. In addition, the sensor versatility provides an easy way for monitoring oxygen diffusion through systems.

Optical methods for sensing and imaging oxygen: materials, spectroscopies and applications

We review the current state of optical methods for sensing oxygen. These have become powerful alternatives to electrochemical detection and in the process of replacing the Clark electrode in many fields. The article (with 694 references) is divided into main sections on direct spectroscopic sensing of oxygen, on absorptiometric and luminescent probes, on polymeric matrices and supports, on additives and related materials, on spectroscopic schemes for read-out and imaging, and on sensing formats (such as waveguide sensing, sensor arrays, multiple sensors and nanosensors). We finally discuss future trends and applications and summarize the properties of the most often used indicator probes and polymers. The ESI† (with 385 references) gives a selection of specific applications of such sensors in medicine, biology, marine and geosciences, intracellular sensing, aerodynamics, industry and biotechnology, among others.

Indicators for optical oxygen sensors

Continuous monitoring of oxygen concentration is of great importance in many different areas of research which range from medical applications to food packaging. In the last three decades, significant progress has been made in the field of optical sensing technology and this review will highlight the one inherent to the development of oxygen indicators. The first section outlines the bioanalytical fields in which optical oxygen sensors have been applied. The second section gives the reader a comprehensive summary of the existing oxygen indicators with a critical highlight on their photophysical and sensing properties. Altogether, this review is meant to give the potential user a guide to select the most suitable oxygen indicator for the particular application of interest.
