Abstract
(1) Background: Asthma is a syndrome found in both adults and children, characterized by airflow obstruction caused by the inflammation of the airways. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have found that lipid metabolism influences both the development and symptomatology of asthma. Lipid metabolism plays an important role both in the occurrence of exacerbations and in the reduction of lung inflammation. Our study aimed to identify any type of association between patients diagnosed with asthma and their serum lipids, including HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglycerides in adults. (2) Methods: To find articles for our review, we searched two platforms: PubMed and Google Scholar. A total of 309 articles from two platforms were analyzed. Finally, 12 papers were selected from the initial pool of identified articles. (3) Results: The positive correlation between triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol), and asthma has been demonstrated in several studies. Moreover, it appears that there is an association between biomarkers of type 2 inflammation and HDL and serum triglycerides in people with atopic status. Regarding the nutrition of asthmatic patients, the greatest impact on the development of the disease seems to be the consumption of fruit and vegetables. Several studies show that a predominantly vegan diet is associated with better control of the disease and a decrease in the number of pro-inflammatory cytokines. (4) Conclusions: Studies show a positive correlation between total cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL-cholesterol levels and asthma and a negative correlation between HDL-cholesterol and asthma. Increased cholesterol values would lead to the stimulation of pro-inflammatory processes and the secretion of cytokines involved in these processes. The most successful diets for asthma patients seem to be those in which the consumption of fruit, vegetables, and high-fiber foods is increased because all of these food groups are rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals.

Abstract
Atorvastatin (ATO) is of the statin class and is used as an orally administered lipid-lowering drug. ATO is a reversible synthetic competitive inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase thus leading to a reduction in cholesterol synthesis. It has recently been demonstrated that ATO has different pharmacological actions, which are unrelated to its lipid-lowering effects and has the ability to treat chronic airway diseases. This paper reviews the potential of ATO as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-proliferative agent after oral or inhaled administration. This paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using ATO under conditions associated with those found in the airways. This treatment could potentially be used to support the formulating of ATO as an inhaler for the treatment of chronic respiratory diseases.

Abstract
Objective: Asthma is a very common airway inflammatory disease for which the existing drug therapy options are insufficient. In this study, we explored the mechanisms underlying the anti-inflammatory potential of Sarsapogenin (SG) and its combination with Fluticasone (FC) in ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic asthma in mice.Methods: In a standard experimental model, asthma in mice was sensitized and challenged by OVA. The mice were treated with SG and SG + FC during OVA challenge. At the completion, lung weight, inflammatory cell count in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), serum cytokines levels, immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels, lung nitrate/nitrite (NO) levels, and lung tissue oxidative stress biomarkers were determined. Histopathological evaluation of the lung tissue was also performed.Key findings: Treatment of mice with SG and SG + FC combination intensely diminished the trafficking of total and differential inflammatory cells count into BALF. SG and SG + FC administration significantly reduced the production of inflammatory cytokines, serum IgE levels and restoration of antioxidant stress markers. Histopathological analysis of lung samples effectually weakened bronchial inflammation and mucus production in the lung with a significant reduction in inflammation and mucus score.Conclusion: Our study results suggested that SG and SG + FC effectively reduced allergic airway inflammation via inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines, NO expressions and oxidative stress parameters. So, it could be used as a therapeutic potential agent for the treatment of asthma by decreasing its dose in combination with FC to avoid the chronic adverse effects of FC.

Abstract
To assess whether the immunosuppressive effects of atorvastatin outweigh its antibacterial ones in an infection, mice were infected with Escherichia coli and administered atorvastatin; survival rates were then monitored. Mice treated with atorvastatin post-infection showed a remarkable decrease in their survival rate. On the other hand, the higher the level of serum IFN-γ in the infected mice treated with atorvastatin, the lower was the survival rate. Levels of IL-4 were markedly depressed in all groups infected with E. coli and treated with atorvastatin. Since atorvastatin inhibits IFN-γ expression in the absence of bacterial infection, we examined whether bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was the element capable of overriding this inhibition. Mouse peripheral blood mononuclear cells were treated with atorvastatin and lipopolysaccharide ex vivo then proinflammatory (IFN-γ, TNFα, IL-6) and prohumoral/regulatory (IL-4, IL-13, IL-10) cytokine levels were analyzed in culture supernatants. While proinflammatory cytokine levels were decreased upon treatment with atorvastatin alone, their levels were markedly elevated by treatment with LPS, bacterial lysate or bacterial culture supernatant. On the other hand, atorvastatin exerted an inhibitory effect on production of the prohumoral/regulatory cytokines. Our data indicates that any consideration for statins as antimicrobial treatment should assess the possible adverse outcomes.

Abstract
Amiodarone (AM) is an effective anti-arrhythmic drug. We investigated the role of mast cells and macrophages on AM induced pulmonary fibrosis and the action of atorvastatin on this fibrosis. Rats were allocated into four groups; negative control (1), positive control (2), 30 mg/kg body weight/day AM (3) and AM + 10 mg/kg/day atorvastatin (4). Lungs were harvested and prepared for histology and immunohistochemistry. Hematoxylin and eosin stained sections of group 3 exhibited disorganized lung architecture. We found cellular debris in the lumen of both intrapulmonary bronchi and bronchioles with partial disruption of the thickened epithelial lining and mononuclear cellular infiltration into the lamina propria. We also observed thickening of the epithelial lining and the smooth muscle layer. Congested, dilated and thickened blood capillaries and thickened inter-alveolar septa were observed with mononuclear cellular infiltrates in the lung of group 3. Most alveoli were collapsed, but some dilated ones were detected. In some alveoli, type ІІ pneumocytes were increased, while type I cells were decreased. We observed significant increases in the amount of collagen in the thickened inter-alveolar septa, around bronchioles and around blood capillaries in sections from group 3. We found a significant increase in mast cells and alveolar macrophages in group 3 compared to group 1. Mast cells and macrophages appear to play important roles in AM induced pulmonary fibrosis. Atorvastatin appears to attenuate this condition.

Abstract
Allergic asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the pulmonary airways. Gelam honey has been proven to possess anti-inflammatory property with great potential to treat an inflammatory condition. However, the effect of ingestion of Gelam honey on allergic asthma has never been studied. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of Gelam honey on the histopathological changes in the lungs of a mice model of allergic asthma. Forty-two Balb/c mice were divided into seven groups: control, I, II, III, IV, V and VI group. All groups except the control were sensitized and challenged with ovalbumin. Mice in groups I, II, III, IV, and V were given honey at a dose of 10% (v/v), 40% (v/v) and 80% (v/v), dexamethasone 3 mg/kg, and phosphate buffered saline (vehicle) respectively, orally once a day for 5 days of the challenged period. Mice were sacrificed 24 h after the last OVA challenged and the lungs were evaluated for histopathological changes by light microscopy. All histopathological parameters such as epithelium thickness, the number of mast cell and mucus expression in Group III significantly improved when compared to Group VI except for subepithelial smooth muscle thickness (p < 0.05). In comparing Group III and IV, all the improvements in histopathological parameters were similar. Also, Gelam honey showed a significant (p < 0.05) reduction in inflammatory cell infiltration and beta-hexosaminidase level in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. In conclusion, we demonstrated that administration of high concentration of Gelam honey alleviates the histopathological changes of mice model of allergic asthma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Statins have pleiotropic immunomodulatory effects that may be beneficial in the treatment of asthma. We previously reported that treatment with atorvastatin improved asthma symptoms in smokers with asthma in the absence of a change in the concentration of a selection of sputum inflammatory mediators. OBJECTIVE To determine the effects of atorvastatin alone and in combination with inhaled corticosteroid on a range of sputum cytokines, chemokines and growth factors implicated in the pathogenesis of asthma, and their association with asthma control questionnaire (ACQ) and/or asthma quality of life questionnaire (AQLQ) scores. METHODS Sputum samples were analysed from a sub-group of 39 smokers with mild to moderate asthma recruited to a randomised controlled trial comparing atorvastatin (40 mg/day) versus placebo for four weeks, followed by inhaled beclometasone (400 μg/day) for a further four weeks. Induced sputum supernatant fluid was analysed (Luminex or biochemical analyses) for concentrations of 35 mediators. RESULTS Sputum mediator concentrations were not reduced by inhaled beclometasone alone. Atorvastatin significantly reduced sputum concentrations of CCL7, IL-12p70, sCD40L, FGF-2, CCL4, TGF-α and MMP-8 compared with placebo and, when combined with inhaled beclometasone, reduced sputum concentrations of MMP-8, IL-1β, IL-10, MMP-9, sCD40L, FGF-2, IL-7, G-CSF and CCL7 compared to ICS alone. Improvements in ACQ and/or AQLQ scores with atorvastatin and ICS were associated with decreases in G-CSF, IL-7, CCL2 and CXCL8. CONCLUSION Short-term treatment with atorvastatin alone or in combination with inhaled beclometasone reduces several sputum cytokines, chemokines and growth factors concentrations unresponsive to inhaled corticosteroids alone, in smokers with asthma.
