Lateralization of complex behaviours in wild greater flamingos

Show me your best side: Lateralization of social and resting behaviors in feral horses

Growing evidence shows a variety of sensorial and motor asymmetries in social and non-social interactions in various species, indicating a lateralized processing of information by the brain. Using digital video cameras on tripods and drones, this study investigated lateralization in frequency and duration of social behavior patterns, in affiliative, agonistic, and resting contexts, in a feral population of horses (Equus ferus caballus) in Northern Portugal, consisting of 37 individuals organized in eight harem groups. Affiliative interactions (including grooming) were more often performed, and lasted longer, when recipients were positioned to the right side. In recumbent resting (animals lying down) episodes on the left side lasted longer. Our results of an affiliative behavior having a right side tendency, provide partial support to the valence-specific hypothesis of Ahern and Schwartz (1979) - left hemisphere dominance for positive affect, affiliative behaviors. Longer recumbent resting episodes on the left side may be due to synchronization. However, in both instances it is discussed how lateralization may be context dependent. Investigating the position asymmetries of social behaviors in feral equids will contribute to a better understanding of differential lateralization and hemispheric specialization from the ecological and evolutionary perspectives.

Fish self-awareness: limits of current knowledge and theoretical expectations

Animal self-awareness is divided into three levels: bodily, social, and introspective self-awareness. Research has focused mainly on the introspection of so-called higher organisms such as mammals. Herein, we turn our attention to fish and provide opinions on their self-awareness based on a review of the scientific literature. Our specific aims are to discuss whether fish (A) could have a neural substrate supporting self-awareness and whether they display signs of (B) social and (C) introspective self-awareness. The present knowledge does not exclude the possibility that fish could have a simple neocortex or other structures that support certain higher cognitive processes, as the function of the primate cerebral cortex can be replaced by other neurological structures. Fish are known to display winner, loser, and audience effects, which could be interpreted as signs of social self-awareness. The audience effect may be explained not only by ethological cost and benefit theory but also by the concept of public self-awareness, which comes from human studies. The behavioural and neural manifestations of depression may be induced in fish under social subordination and may be viewed as certain awareness of a social status. The current findings on fish introspective self-awareness have been debated in the scientific community and, therefore, demand replication to provide more evidence. Further research is needed to verify the outlined ideas; however, the current knowledge indicates that fish are capable of certain higher cognitive processes, which raises questions and implications regarding ethics and welfare in fish-related research and husbandry.

Sex Differences in Laterality Are Associated with Reproduction in Threespine Stickleback

AbstractLaterality, the partitioning of information processing into specific brain hemispheres, is widespread across animal taxa. Substantial unexplained variation in this trait exists, particularly between the sexes, despite multiple identified advantages of lateralization. Here, we demonstrate a relationship among laterality (measured as directional biases), reproduction, and experience of mating and parenting. Using threespine sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus), a species with uniparental male care, we showed that individuals of the caring sex (males) were more strongly lateralized than the noncaring sex (females) during reproduction and that laterality was reduced outside the breeding season in males. Additionally, males with experience of mating and parenting were more strongly lateralized than males without this experience. Our findings suggest that fitness-related behaviors that vary between the sexes, such as reproductive behaviors including courtship, spawning, and parenting, are significant but previously unidentified sources of variation in laterality.

Laterality in foraging phalaropes promotes phenotypically assorted groups

Asymmetry of the brain and behavior (lateralization) is widespread in the animal kingdom and could be particularly advantageous for gregarious organisms. Here, we investigate the possibility that lateralized behaviors affect the structure of foraging flocks. Phalaropes (Scolopacidae: Phalaropus) are highly aquatic shorebirds and the only vertebrates that spin on the water to feed, often in large flocks. There is anecdotal evidence that individuals spin in a single direction and that those spinning counter the majority are usually found at the periphery of a flock. Although such phenotypic segregation may reduce interference among socially foraging birds, its extent and underlying mechanism remain unexplored. Using over 900 spinning bouts from freely available video repositories, we find support for individual, but not population, lateralization of spinning in the three phalarope species. Although spinning direction was not determined by the position occupied within a flock (periphery vs. core), nearest neighbors were more likely to spin in the same direction; moreover, they were three times less likely to interfere with each other when aligning spinning direction. Our results indicate that a simple rule (keep foraging with similarly lateralized individuals) can generate self-organized interactions among flockmates, resulting in groups phenotypically assorted.
