Abstract
The purpose of the present research was to define ovarian follicular dynamics and plasma endocrine profiles in response to a single PGF2α injection, administered indiscriminately during the breeding season of Barbari goats. Ovarian dynamics were observed at every 12 h interval by using B mode ultrasonography, blood samples for hormonal analysis such as estradiol 17β and progesterone were collected at every 12 h interval, and bucks with aprons were used to identify standing estrus at every 6 h interval. Relative to PGF2α, the start of standing estrus and ovulation differ (p < 0.05) between early- (n = 7), intermediate- (n = 6), and late-responding (n = 6) goats. The highest plasma level of estradiol 17β was detected 12 h prior to ovulation. The average diameter of the ovulatory follicle and length of standing estrus were comparable (p > 0.05) between the goats. The corpus luteum degenerated more quickly (p < 0.05) in early- than intermediate- and late-responding goats. Dominant follicle diameter and estradiol 17β concentration also differ (p < 0.05) among groups. Although the plasma level of progesterone did not vary (p = 0.065), the variation in progesterone concentration with time differed (p < 0.05) amongst the goats. As a result, this research indirectly reveals that the beginning of standing estrus, end of estrus, and ovulation after PGF2α might fluctuate in Barbari goats because of follicular and hormonal dynamics during the luteal phase.

Abstract
This research aimed to investigate the effect of refeeding on production, blood biochemical parameters, and reproduction in underfed Kacang goat does. Twelve 2-3-year-old Kacang goats scored (body condition score [BCS]: 1-1.5) with poor body condition but appeared healthy, gave normal births 3-4 months before but no longer nursing their youngs, and anestrus were used in this study. The experiment consisted of 110 days with 14 days of adaptation period and 96 days of feeding treatment and data collection. After the adaptation period, the animals were divided into two groups (A and B), with six animals each. During the first 40 days (underfeeding period), they were fed with kangkong (Ipomoea reptans) straw at a level of 2% of body weight (BW). For the following 56 days (refeeding period), each animal in group A was fed at the level of 4% BW per day while group B was fed at the level of 5% BW per day consisting of 50% kangkong straw and 50% concentrate. Feed intake, average daily gain, body condition, and estrus were assessed in the period of underfeeding and refeeding. Blood samples were collected at the end of the underfeeding and refeeding period for blood biochemical parameter analyses. During the underfeeding period, the animals were anestrous and had poor body condition (BCS: 1.17-1.33) and high serum levels of cortisol, progesterone, and estradiol. Refeeding resulted in a significant increase in BCS (2.75-3.0), restoring estrous cycle, and reduced serum cortisol and progesterone level (p < 0.05). The Kacang goats had good compensatory growth. It could be concluded that refeeding at the level of 4-5% BW would restore undernourished goats' clinical condition, productivity, and reproductive performance after 8 weeks of refeeding.

Abstract
How multiple ovulations happen in prolific goats is still unknown even though studies on ovarian physiology and folliculogenesis have made extensive progress. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of endogenous regulatory factors and regulate structural gene expression mainly at the post-transcriptional level. In this study, in the follicular phase, six large follicles were collected from prolific Dazu black goat and used to generate RNA libraries for RNA sequencing. Based on the litter size and average number of ovulatory follicles in Dazu black goats, the largest three follicles were sorted as ovulatory follicles, and the remaining as subordinate ones. In total, 418 known miRNAs and 110 novel miRNAs were found, and the expression of six randomly selected miRNAs was validated by quantitative PCR analysis. Nine miRNAs were differently expressed between the ovulatory and subordinate follicles (p < 0.01). Chi-miR-582-5p, novel-130, chi-miR-214-3p, and chi-miR-500-5p were upregulated in the ovulatory group, and chi-miR-383, chi-miR-130b-5p, chi-miR-92a-3p, chi-miR-125b-5p, and novel-9 were downregulated in the same group. Chi-miR-130b-5p and chi-miR-214-3p were predicted to target at LHR (XM_013967581.1), GDF9 (NM_001285708.1), BMP15 (NM_001285588.1), and CYP19A1 (XM_013967046.1). In conclusion, nine miRNAs were differently expressed between ovulatory and subordinate follicles, and chi-miR-130b-5p and chi-miR-214-3p were predicted to regulate the expression of genes involved in gonadotropin hormone signaling and oocyte-derived growth factors. Additional studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Goats were among the first animals to be domesticated over 10,000 years ago and are part of human societies since the beginning of agriculture. Goats play a major role both in commercial farming systems and in subsistence agriculture systems, particularly in tropical, subtropical and Mediterranean regions where they are crucial for the supply of meat, milk, fibre and dung. This review concerns the Serrana breed, the most important and numerous indigenous goat breed from Portugal that was furthermore exported to other regions of the world, notably South America during the Portuguese colonization. Herein, we describe the origin and history of the breed as well as the productive performance and most common production systems. Finally, we address the local and traditional PDO (protected denomination of origin) and PGI (protected geographical indication) that are produced from these animals.

Abstract
BMPs are multifunctional growth factors implicated in regulating the ovarian function as key intra-ovarian factors. Biological effects of BMPs are mediated through binding with membrane bound receptors like BMPR-IB and initiating downstream Smad signaling pathway. FecB mutation, regarded as a loss of function mutation in the BMPR-IB gene was identified in certain sheep breeds having high fecundity. Similar type of fecundity genes in goats have not been discovered so far. Hence, the current study was designed to investigate the effects of BMPR-IB gene modulation on granulosa cell function in goats. The BMPR-IB gene was knocked out using CRISPR-Cas technology in granulosa cells and cultured in vitro with BMP-4 stimulation for three different durations In addition, the FecB mutation was introduced in the BMPR-IB gene applying Easi-CRISPR followed by BMP-4/7 stimulation for 72 h. Steroidogenesis and cell viability were studied to explore the granulosa cell function on BMPR-IB gene modulation. BMPRs were found to be expressed stage specifically in granulosa cells of goats. Higher transcriptional abundance of R-Smads, LHR and FSHR indicating sensitisation of Smad signaling and increased gonadotropin sensitivity along with a significant reduction in the cell proliferation and viability was observed in granulosa cells upon BMPR-IB modulation. The inhibitory action of BMP-4/7 on P4 secretion was abolished in both KO and KI cells. Altogether, the study has revealed an altered Smad signaling, steroidogenesis and cell viability upon modulation of BMPR-IB gene in granulosa cells similar to that are documented in sheep breeds carrying the FecB mutation.

Abstract
The knowledge about ovarian physiology in small ruminants is still limited, especially when compared to other domestic species. Ovarian function in goats is mainly assessed by ultrasonographic techniques, whereas a quali-quantitative feature of the follicular and luteal structures throughout the reproductive cycle in naturally cycling goats is scarce. This study provides a detailed description of the functional morphology and size of 742 ovarian structures (follicles, corpora hemorrhagica and corpora lutea) in relation to the oestrus phase, the body weight and the age of 25 Alpine goats (Capra hircus). The current study demonstrated that, the number and size of the follicles were related to the stage of the reproductive cycle (P < 0.0001). Also, the mean number of follicles was high during both prepubertal anestrus and diestrus, whereas it was low in the oestrus. Large (3-4 mm in diameter) and very large follicles (> 4 mm) (P < 0.001), and small follicles (< 2 mm; P < 0.05) varied throughout the reproductive cycle, while medium follicles (2-3 mm) were invariably observed. Large and very large follicles were predominant during the diestrus phase and small follicles in the prepubertal anestrus. It is evident from the current study that the number of follicles (P < 0.05) was significantly affected with both body weight and age. On the other hand, the size of follicles was significantly affected with body weight only (P < 0.0001). These results could contribute to a deeper understanding of ovarian transformations with important implications in assisted reproductive technologies, thereby concurring in advancing the efficiency of ultrasound in breeding programs for this species.

Abstract
Background DNA methylation plays a vital role in reproduction. Entire genome DNA methylation changes during the oestrous phase (ES) and dioestrous phase (DS) in the ovaries of Guanzhong dairy goats were investigated using bisulphite sequencing to understand the molecular biological mechanisms of these goats’ oestrous cycle. Results We discovered distinct genome-wide DNA methylation patterns in ES and DS ovaries. A total of 26,910 differentially methylated regions were upregulated and 21,453 differentially methylated regions were downregulated in the ES samples compared with the DS samples (P-values ≤0.05 and fold change of methylation ratios ≥2). Differentially methylated region analysis showed hypomethylation in the gene body regions and hypermethylation in the joining region between upstream regions and gene bodies. The methylation ratios of the STAR, FGF2, FGF12, BMP5 and SMAD6 genes in the ES samples were lower than those of the DS samples (P-values ≤0.05 and fold change of methylation ratios ≥2). Conversely, the methylation ratios of the EGFR, TGFBR2, IGF2BP1 and MMD2 genes increased in the ES samples compared with the DS samples. In addition, 223 differentially methylated genes were found in the GnRH signalling pathway (KO04912), ovarian steroidogenesis pathway (KO04913), oestrogen signalling pathway (KO04915), oxytocin signalling pathway (KO04921), insulin secretion pathway (KO04911) and MAPK signalling pathway (KO04010). Conclusions This study is the first large-scale comparison of the high-resolution DNA methylation landscapes of oestrous and dioestrous ovaries from dairy goats. Previous studies and our investigations have shown that the NR5A2, STAR, FGF2 and BMP5 genes might have potential application value in regulating caprine oestrus. Abstract
Goat husbandry is an important component of the agrarian society of Himachal Pradesh, India. Adult, healthy, non-pregnant, Gaddi does (7), aged 4.52±0.39 years, weighing 27.07±1.03 kg were investigated during breeding season (January–February 2017) at University Farm for follicular wave characterstics. Cyclic Gaddi goats during breeding season mainly manifested four wave pattern of follicular growth (5; 71.4%), while the remaining animals had either 3 or 5 wave pattern (1 each; 14.3%). The last wave in all these animals was ovulatory, with interovulatory and interoestrus interval of 20.85±0.63 and 21.0±0.53 days, respectively. Average (Mean±SEM) diameter of ovulatory follicle was 6.85±0.24 mm. The average progesterone concentration peaked to 11.89±1.55 ng/ml at day 14 of estrus cycle. Mean luteal and follicular phase durations were 17.57±0.36 and 3.14±0.26 days, respectively. Overall daily total number of follicles during the breeding season were 5.50±0.55 which suggests pronounced ovarian activity.

Abstract
The effects of estrus synchronization with prostaglandin F(2α) (PGF(2α)) and Controlled Internal Drug Release Device (CIDR) on ensuing antral follicular development were documented and compared to natural estrous cycles of non-seasonal tropical goats. Two to six follicular waves were observed, with the three-follicular wave pattern being most frequently observed (58%), followed by four follicular waves (31.6%) per estrous cycle. There were no significant differences (p>0.05) between the PGF(2α)- or CIDR-synchronized and natural estrous cycles nor between the synchronized and subsequent non-synchronized cycles in terms of the time of ovulation, the duration of inter-ovulatory intervals, daily numbers of antral follicles ≥3mm in diameter, and the number of follicular waves per cycle in the goats of the present study.

Abstract
In this study the estrous cycle of the aoudad has been analyzed and characterized for the first time, using non-invasive methods for tracking reproductive cyclicity. The duration of the estrous cycle is 23 days (range 16-32 days), with a luteal phase of 17 days (range 12-27 days) and an interluteal phase of 6 days (range 3-14 days). The estrous cycle did not differ between females, but it was affected by the time of the year. Intraindividual variation of the cycle was observed in one out of the nine individuals. The average hormone concentration values, the estrogen:progestogen ratio, as well as their minimum and maximum values for each interluteal and luteal phases of the estrous cycle, are shown. Interindividual differences found in these values were basically associated with age. Females tended to start their cycle when in the presence of an adult male. Anestrus was observed in study females except for the oldest (14 years old). Age and anestrus onset were correlated, with younger females starting earlier than the older ones. This study reveals that Ammotragus reproductive biology is more similar to that of Capra than Ovis, except for some endocrinological features.

Abstract
A new superstimulatory protocol (Day 0 Protocol) to initiate FSH treatment in the absence of a large follicle was compared to a traditional protocol in goats. The Day 0 Protocol (n=44) consisted of pre-treatment with progesterone and eCG to synchronize ovulation and the emergence of Wave 1, with FSH starting 84 h after the end of progesterone exposure (i.e., soon after ovulation). The traditional protocol (n=46) consisted of 11 d of progesterone exposure, with FSH treatment beginning 2 d before the end of progesterone exposure. Treatment with FSH was initiated in the absence of a large follicle in 37/44 and in 6/46 goats in the Day 0 Protocol and traditional protocol, respectively (P<0.01). There was more CL in the Day 0 Protocol than in the traditional protocol (breeding season: 9.6+/-0.6 and 6.3+/-0.8, P<0.05; non-breeding season: 14.3+/-1.5 and 10.7+/-1.5; P<0.05). More Grades 1 and 2 embryos were recovered in the Day 0 Protocol than in the traditional protocol (breeding season: 4.8+/-0.7 and 1.8+/-0.5, P<0.05; non-breeding season: 5.6+/-1.1 and 3.5+/-0.7, P=0.07). Similarly, the proportion of embryos that were Grades 1 and 2 was higher for the Day 0 Protocol than for the traditional protocol (breeding season: 81/114, 71%, versus 16/43, 37%, P<0.05; non-breeding season: 118/203, 58% versus 95/205, 46%, P<0.05). In summary, the Day 0 Protocol, was effective in initiating superstimulatory treatment in the absence of a large follicle, and compared to the traditional protocol, induced a higher ovulation rate and better embryo yield in goats.

Abstract
The origin and evolution of preovulatory follicles (POF) in 9 hyperstimulated (polyovulatory) Serrana goats were characterised. After oestrus synchronisation and detection, transrectal ovarian ultrasonography was performed daily during two complete oestrous cycles. Blood samples were taken every 4 h during 24 h after oestrus detection for preovulatory LH peak and twice a week for plasma progesterone determinations. The interovulatory interval of 14 oestrous cycles with double ovulations was 21.1 +/- 0.3 days. The onset of ovulatory follicular wave occurred 4 days (-3.9 +/- 0.3 days, n = 14) prior to the ovulation day (day 0) with a POF size of 6.9 +/- 0.2 mm (n = 28). In goats with ovulations in both ovaries (78.6%), the emergence of the first POF occurred earlier (-4.1 +/- 0.3 days) than the second POF (-3.3 +/- 0.2 days, n = 11, P < 0.05). No differences in the total number of follicles > or = 2 mm were found between the day of POF emergence (4.3 +/- 0.4) and the day before ovulation (3.5 +/- 0.3, P > 0.05). These results showed the existence of a delay between the emergence of first and second POF and suggest a weak dominance effect in goats with double ovulations.

Abstract
The existence of short ovulatory cycles (5-day duration) after the first male-induced ovulations in anovulatory ewes and goats, associated or not with the appearance of oestrous behaviour, is the origin of the two-peak abnormal distribution of parturitions after the "male effect". We propose here a working hypothesis to explain the presence of these short cycles. The male-effect is efficient during anoestrus, when follicles contain granulosa cells of lower quality than during the breeding season. They generate corpora lutea (CL) with a lower proportion of large luteal cells compared to small cells, which secrete less progesterone, compared to what is observed in the breeding season cycle. This is probably not sufficient to block prostaglandin synthesis in the endometrial cells of the uterus at the time when the responsiveness to prostaglandins of the new-formed CL is initiated and, in parallel, to centrally reduce LH pulsatility. This LH pulsatility stimulates a new wave of follicles secreting oestradiol which, in turn, stimulates prostaglandin synthesis and provokes luteolysis and new ovulation(s). The occurrence of a new follicular wave on days 3-4 of the first male-induced cycle and the initiation of the responsiveness to prostaglandins of the CL from day 3 of the oestrous cycle are probably the key elements which ensure such regularity in the duration of the short cycles. Exogenous progesterone injection suppresses short cycles, probably not by delaying ovulation time, but rather by blocking prostaglandin synthesis, thus impairing luteolysis. The existence, or not, of oestrous behaviour associated to these ovulatory events mainly varies with species: ewes, compared to does, require a more intense endogenous progesterone priming; only ovulations preceded by normal cycles are associated with oestrous behaviour. Thus, the precise and delicate mechanism underlying the existence of short ovulatory and oestrous cycles induced by the male effect appears to be dependent on the various levels of the hypothalamo-pituitary-ovario-uterine axis.
