An investigation of universal design (UD) features in Indian household products

BACKGROUND

Universal design (UD) is a beneficial concept for better accessible design to improve easy approachability and industry-standard products. Specifically, Indian household products require UD features in domains such as bathroom and toilet, furniture, kitchen utilities, and home appliances. Among household product design in India, a lack of understanding of the product's universality might be a constraint for product designers. Also, there are no studies assessing the UD features of Indian household products.

OBJECTIVE

(1) To examine the UD feature of Indian household products against the seven principles of UD; (2) To determine the most lacking UD feature among Indian household products; and (3) To find out the Indian household categories (i.e., bathroom and toilet, furniture, kitchen utilities, and home appliances) which are most lacking in UD performance.

METHOD

The UD features were evaluated using a standardized questionnaire, which contains 29 questions on UD principles and general questions (gender, education level, age and house characteristics). Using statistical packages, the data were computed for mean and frequency distribution, as well as analyzed to achieve the objectives. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed for comparative analyses.

RESULTS

The results indicate that the "flexibility in use" and "perceptible information" principles were lacking among the Indian household products. Also, bathroom and toilet and furniture household products were most lacking in UD performance.

CONCLUSION

The findings of this research will enlighten the insights into the usefulness, usability, safety, and marketability of Indian household products. In addition, they will be helpful in promoting UD features and obtaining financial benefits from the Indian market.

How to implement inclusive design into distinctive feature hand tool? a design study on fine operation-aid screwdriver

Hand tool design should integrate the concept of Inclusive Design to be accessible to most users. However, current Inclusive Design strategies of product development are mostly used in post-design evaluation. The retention of inclusive properties in product when new functions are incorporated is essential. Fine operation-aid screwdrivers are designed according to user requirements to address frequently-encountered problems when using screwdrivers namely-insufficient lighting and difficulty in properly installing screws respectively. TRIZ method is applied, comprised the improving parameters solving the problems and worsening parameters which prevents the original inclusive design factors from being damaged into the contradiction matrix, and obtains a set of innovation principles. Eight experts were consulted for their design ideas and developed two fine operation-aid screwdrivers embracing the concept of Inclusive Design. Furthermore, factors regarding the two major operating problems were added to an existing hand tools Inclusive Design Scale. After correlation analysis, the inclusive fine operation-aid screwdriver evaluation scale was established. In addition, two more screwdrivers were selected with the same functions and high reviews on the market as control samples, and 39 users were recruited using a quota sampling strategy to participate in Inclusive Design evaluations. The results revealed that the fine operation-aid screwdrivers evidently solved the two major operating problems in terms of the five dimensions including functionality, comfort, professionality, safety, and usability in the inclusive fine operation-aid screwdriver evaluation scale, thereby affirming the rationality and reliability of our hand tool development approach.

The Strategy of Universal-Design Thinking in Architecturally Innovative Product Development

Universal design, as an important concept in product development, has been gradually implemented in various industries and firms, but most of the applications are aimed at the incremental innovation of product design. However, considering the differentiation of product types, the design factors are varied and not precise, which makes it difficult to effectively implement the existing universal-design principles in specific product designs when facing architecturally innovative product development, which leads to an increasing amount of time and resources. This study, with an umbrella stand as an example, proposes to design a new universal-design scale by combining the attributes of the umbrella stand, the existing universal-design principles and the usability principles at the beginning of the design. Then, through interviews and user surveys, cluster analysis is used to screen the products and refine the design factors. In addition, with the Quantification Type I, the universal-design principles and design factors are matched effectively in order to obtain the weight differences of the product design factors and eliminate unsuitable design factors, in order to guide product design. Finally, the universal umbrella-stand-design case is completed for verification. The results show that the universal umbrella stand has been significantly improved in the evaluation of universal-design principles. In the future design, architecturally innovative products with inaccurate design factors can also use this process to complete the design and development of the target product, and to significantly enhance the universal-design evaluation of the product.

Selection of Manufacturing Enterprise Innovation Design Project Based on Consumer’s Green Preferences

For enterprise, how to quickly realize the selection of green innovative design projects has become a key issue for improving innovation performance. Based on an analysis of enterprise product innovation and customer green preferences, an indicator set for innovation performance in enterprise was established. Considering the fuzziness of the correlation between indicators for innovation performance in enterprise and consumer’s green preferences, a fuzzy clustering method was used to identify the internal relations among the indicators for innovation performance with green preferences of customers. Then a wavelet neural network was used to select the innovation design project for various green preferences of customers. Finally, a case study was proposed to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the method. This work can help the enterprise to develop green design, products, and serve uniformly, which can effectively shorten green product development cycles, reduce cost, and improve enterprise innovation performance greatly.

Integrating user centered design, universal design and goal, operation, method and selection rules to improve the usability of DAISY player for persons with visual impairments

The Digital Accessible Information SYstem (DAISY) player is an assistive reading tool developed for use by persons with visual impairments. Certain problems have persisted in the operating procedure and interface of DAISY players, especially for their Chinese users. Therefore, the aim of this study was to redesign the DAISY player with increased usability features for use by native Chinese speakers. First, a User Centered Design (UCD) process was employed to analyze the development of the prototype. Next, operation procedures were reorganized according to GOMS (Goals, Operators, Methods, and Selection rules) methodology. Then the user interface was redesigned according to specific Universal Design (UD) principles. Following these revisions, an experiment involving four scenarios was conducted to compare the new prototype to other players, and it was tested by twelve visually impaired participants. Results indicate the prototype had the quickest operating times, the fewest number of operating errors, and the lowest mental workloads of all the compared players, significantly enhancing the prototype's usability. These findings have allowed us to generate suggestions for developing the next generation of DAISY players for people, especially for Chinese audience.
