Enhanced photoelectrochemical performance of Bi2S3/Ag2S/ZnO novel ternary heterostructure nanorods

Photoelectrochemical quenching-recovery biosensor based on NSCQDs/Fe2O3@Bi2S3 for the detection of trypsin

BACKGROUND

The content of trypsin will change when pancreatic diseases occur, therefore developing a high-performance method for trypsin detection is of great significance for guiding patients on medication plans and improving their prognosis. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) analysis techniques have emerged as a solution to apply for bioassays.

RESULTS

Herein, the Fe2O3@Bi2S3 and Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon quantum dots (NSCQDs) were successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Subsequently, NSCQDs/Fe2O3@Bi2S3 with a photocurrent amplification effect covered on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrode as the substrate material and apoferritin (APO) as a bio-recognition element to quench the photocurrent of the substrate material which can be excited with light. Due to the decomposition specifically between APO and trypsin, the photocurrent response increased. The linear range for trypsin detection showed satisfied results from 2 to 1000 ng mL-1 under optimal conditions, with a detection limit of 0.42 ng mL-1 and a recovery rate of 97.41 %-103.02 %, enabling efficient quantitative analysis of trypsin.

SIGNIFICANCE

In this experiment, a PEC biosensor with simple operation, low detection limit, excellent selectivity and strong stability was successfully prepared, enabling quantitative analysis of trypsin in human serum samples through the quenching-recovery mechanism. It holds great significance for diagnosis and serves as a practical method for the detection of trypsin in the future.

Numerical simulation of quantum dots as a buffer layer in CIGS solar cells: a comparative study

Quantum bandgap buffer layers can improve sunlight absorption in the short wavelength region, hence improving the performance of CIGS solar cells. In this study, we use numerical modelling to determine the impact of various buffer layers' electrical characteristics on the performance of CIGS thin film photovoltaic devices, particularly, carrier concentration and the quantum effect. As well Ag₂S buffer layer has been experimentally examined to fulfilment its effect in term of bulk and quantum bandgap. Experimental results depicted that, Ag₂S QDs has polycrystalline nature of films, with smooth surface roughness, and average diameter 4 nm. Meanwhile, a simulation revealed that the Fermi level of the (n-buffer layer) material shifts closer to the conduction band with an increase in carrier concentration. The findings indicate that, a buffer layer with a wider bandgap and carrier concentration is an essential demand for achieving a device with a higher conversion efficiency and a broader bandgap-CBO window. It was attributed to beneficial synergistic effects of high carrier concentration and narrower depletion region, which enable carriers to overcome high CBO barrier. Most importantly, modelling results indicate that the optic-electrical characteristics of the buffer layer are critical in determining the progress of a CIGS solar cell.

Effect of Varying AgNO3 and CS(NH2)2 Concentrations on Performance of Ag2S/ZnO NRs/ITO Photoanode

This research focuses on improving the photoelectrochemical performance of binary heterostructure Ag2S/ZnO NRs/ITO by manipulating synthesis conditions, particularly the concentrations of sliver nitrate AgNO3 and thiourea CS(NH2)2. The photoelectrochemical performance of Ag2S/ZnO nanorods on indium tin oxide (ITO) nanocomposite was compared to pristine ZnO NRs/ITO photoanode. The hydrothermal technique, an eco-friendly, low-cost method, was used to successfully produce Ag2S/ZnO NRs at different concentrations of AgNO3 and CS(NH2)2. The obtained thin films were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), and photoelectrochemical studies (PECs). We observed that there was an enhancement in absorbance in the visible region and effective photoelectron transfer between the Ag2S/ZnO NRs/ITO photoelectrode and the electrolyte Red-Ox when illuminated with 100 mW cm−2. Increasing the concentration of AgNO3 caused a remarkable decrease in the optical bandgap energy (Eg) values. However, we noticed that there was an unstable trend in Eg when the concentration of CS(NH2)2 was adjusted. The photoelectrochemical studies revealed that at a bias of 1.0 V, and 0.005 M of AgNO3 and 0.03 M of CS(NH2)2, the maximum photocurrent of the Ag2S/ZnO NRs/ITO photoanode was 3.97 mA/cm2, which is almost 11 times that of plain ZnO nanorods. Based on the outcomes of this investigating, the Ag2S/ZnO NRs/ITO photoanode is proposed as a viable alternative photoanode in photoelectrochemical applications.

Operando Photo-Electrochemical Catalysts Synchrotron Studies

The attempts to develop efficient methods of solar energy conversion into chemical fuel are ongoing amid climate changes associated with global warming. Photo-electrocatalytic (PEC) water splitting and CO₂ reduction reactions show high potential to tackle this challenge. However, the development of economically feasible solutions of PEC solar energy conversion requires novel efficient and stable earth-abundant nanostructured materials. The latter are hardly available without detailed understanding of the local atomic and electronic structure dynamics and mechanisms of the processes occurring during chemical reactions on the catalyst–electrolyte interface. This review considers recent efforts to study photo-electrocatalytic reactions using in situ and operando synchrotron spectroscopies. Particular attention is paid to the operando reaction mechanisms, which were established using X-ray Absorption (XAS) and X-ray Photoelectron (XPS) Spectroscopies. Operando cells that are needed to perform such experiments on synchrotron are covered. Classical and modern theoretical approaches to extract structural information from X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES) spectra are discussed.

Enhanced UV Photoresponsivity of ZnO Nanorods Decorated with Ag2S/ZnS Nanoparticles by Successive Ionic Layer Adsorption and Reaction Method

Recently, different kinds of energy band structures have been utilized to improve the photoelectric properties of zinc oxide (ZnO). In this work, ZnO nanorods were prepared by the hydrothermal method and then decorated with silver sulfide (Ag2S)/zinc sulfide (ZnS) via two-step successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method. The photoelectric properties of nanocomposites are investigated. The results show that ZnO decorated with Ag2S/ZnS can improve the photocurrent of photodetectors from 0.34 to 0.56 A at bias of 9 V. With the immersion time increasing from 15 to 60 minutes, the photocurrent of photodetectors increases by 0.22 A. The holes in the valence band of ZnO can be transferred to the valence band of ZnS and Ag2S, which promotes the separation and suppresses the recombination of hole-electron pairs generated in ZnO. Moreover, electrons excited by ultraviolet (UV) light in Ag2S can also be injected into the conduction band of ZnO, which causes the photocurrent to increase more than the ZnO photodetector.
