A new combined green method for 2-Chlorophenol removal using cross-linked Brassica rapa peroxidase in silicone oil

This study proposes a new technique to treat waste air containing 2-Chlorophenol (2-CP), namely an integrated process coupling absorption of the compound in an organic liquid phase and its enzymatic degradation. Silicone oil (47V20) was used as an organic absorbent to allow the volatile organic compound (VOC) transfer from the gas phase to the liquid phase followed by its degradation by means of Cross-linked Brassica rapa peroxidase (BRP) contained in the organic phase. An evaluation of silicone oil (47V20) absorption capacity towards 2-CP was first accomplished by determining its partition coefficient (H) in this solvent. The air-oil partition coefficient of 2-CP was found equal to 0.136 Pa m(3) mol(-1), which is five times lower than the air-water value (0.619 Pam(3) mol(-1)). The absorbed 2-CP was then subject to enzymatic degradation by cross-linked BRP aggregates (BRP-CLEAs). The degradation step was affected by four parameters (contact time; 2-CP, hydrogen peroxide and enzyme concentrations), which were optimized in order to obtain the highest conversion yield. A maximal conversion yield of 69% and a rate of 1.58 mg L(-1) min(-1)were obtained for 100 min duration time when 2-CP and hydrogen peroxide concentrations were respectively 80 mg L(-1) and 6 mM in the presence of 2.66 UI mL(-1) BRP-CLEAs. The reusability of BRP-CLEAs in silicone oil was assessed, showing promising results since 59% of their initial efficiency remained after three batches.

The operating performance of a biotrickling filter with Lysinibacillus fusiformis for the removal of high-loading gaseous chlorobenzene

Removal of gaseous chlorobenzene (CB) by a biotrickling filter (BTF) filled with modified ceramics and multi-surface hollow balls during gas-liquid mass transfer at the steady state was by microbial degradation rather than dissolution in the spray liquid or emission into the atmosphere. The BTF was flexible and resistant to the acid environment of the spray liquid, with the caveat that the spray liquid should be replaced once every 6-7 days. The BTF, loaded with Lysinibacillus fusiformis, performed well for purification of high-loading CB gas. The maximum CB gas inlet loading rate, 103 g m(-3) h(-1), CB elimination capacity, 97 g m(-3) h(-1), and CB removal efficiency, 97.7 %, were reached at a spray liquid flow rate of 27.6 ml min(-1), an initial CB concentration of up to 1,300 mg m(-3), and an empty bed retention time of more than 45 s.

Rotating biological contactor reactor with biofilm promoting mats for treatment of benzene and xylene containing wastewater

A novel rotating biological contactor (RBC) bioreactor immobilized with microorganisms was designed to remove volatile organic compounds (VOC), such as benzene and xylene from emissions, and its performance was investigated. Gas-phase VOCs stripped by air injection were 98 % removed in the RBC when the superficial air flow rate was 375 ml/h (1,193 and 1,226 mg/l of benzene and xylene, respectively). The maximum removal rate was observed to be 1,007 and 1,872 mg/m(3)/day for benzene and xylene, respectively. The concentration profile of benzene and xylene along the RBC was dependent on the air flow rate and the degree of microbial adaptation. Air flow rate and residence time were found to be the most important operational parameters for the RBC reactor. By manipulating these operational parameters, the removal efficiency and capacity of the bioreactor could be enhanced. The kinetic constant K (s) demonstrated a linear relationship that indicated the maximum removal of benzene and xylene in RBC reactor. The phylogenic profile shows the presence of bacterium like Pseudomonas sp., Bacillus sp., and Enterococcus sp., which belonged to the phylum Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria that were responsible for the 98 % organic removal in the RBC.

Waste gas biofiltration: advances and limitations of current approaches in microbiology

As confidence in gas biofiltration efficacy grows, ever more complex malodorant and toxic molecules are ameliorated. In parallel, for many countries, emission control legislation becomes increasingly stringent to accommodate both public health and climate change imperatives. Effective gas biofiltration in biofilters and biotrickling filters depends on three key bioreactor variables: the support medium; gas molecule solubilization; and the catabolic population. Organic and inorganic support media, singly or in combination, have been employed and their key criteria are considered by critical appraisal of one, char. Catabolic species have included fungal and bacterial monocultures and, to a lesser extent, microbial communities. In the absence of organic support medium (soil, compost, sewage sludge, etc.) inoculum provision, a targeted enrichment and isolation program must be undertaken followed, possibly, by culture efficacy improvement. Microbial community process enhancement can then be gained by comprehensive characterization of the culturable and total populations. For all species, support medium attachment is critical and this is considered prior to filtration optimization by water content, pH, temperature, loadings, and nutrients manipulation. Finally, to negate discharge of fungal spores, and/or archaeal and/or bacterial cells, capture/destruction technologies are required to enable exploitation of the mineralization product CO(2).

Biotrickling filtration of complex pharmaceutical VOC emissions along with chloroform

Biodegradation of chloroform along with a mixture of VOCs (methanol, ethanol, acetone and toluene) commonly found in pharmaceutical emissions using a biotrickling filter (BTF) was evaluated. The performance of the BTF was evaluated for both steady and transient conditions, for different inlet loading rates (ILR), empty bed residence time (EBRT) and inlet chloroform concentrations. Among the VOCs studied before chloroform feeding, toluene removal was the least, under all the operating conditions. Complete removal of all pollutants was achieved up to a chloroform loading rate of 14.22 g/m(3)/h. Increase in loading rate of chloroform adversely affected the removal efficiency of toluene and declined the overall performance of BTF. The results suggest that biodegradation of VOCs is influenced by the inlet loading rate and complexity of pollutants in the inlet air stream. Results from studies on shock loading and starvation indicated that the system was highly resilient to transient operating conditions.

The characteristics and enzyme activities of 4-chlorophenol biodegradation by Fusarium sp

The effects of pH, temperature and sucrose addition on biodegradative capacity of Fusarium sp. HJ01 for 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) were examined, the property of dioxygenases produced by Fusarium sp. HJ01 during 4-CP degradation was investigated. The results show that Fusarium sp. HJ01 has a high capacity on degrading 4-CP in solution. The optimum values of pH, sucrose concentration and temperature are pH 7,1 g/L and 30°C, respectively. The strain can produce chlorocatechol 1,2-dioxygenase (CC12O) and chlorocatechol 2,3-dioxygenase (CC23O), which show the highest activities when 4-CP is used as the sole carbon source and energy, and the optimal values of pH and temperature are pH 7 and 50°C for CC12O as well as pH 8 and 60°C for CC23O. The kinetics of enzyme-catalyzed reactions accord with the Michaelis-Menten equation. To our knowledge, this is the first study on biodegradation of 4-CP by Fusarium sp. HJ01.
