An insight on the plausible biological and non-biological detoxification of heavy metals in tannery waste: A comprehensive review

A key challenge for the tannery industries is the volume of tannery waste water (TWW) generated during the processing of leather, releasing various forms of toxic heavy metals resulting in uncontrolled discharge of tannery waste (TW) into the environment leading to pollution. The pollutants in TW includes heavy metals such as chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) etc, when discharged above the permissible limit causes ill effects on humans. Therefore, several researchers have reported the application of biological and non-biological methods for the removal of pollutants in TW. This review provides insights on the global scenario of tannery industries and the harmful effects of heavy metal generated by tannery industry on micro and macroorganisms of the various ecological niches. It also provides information on the process, advantages and disadvantages of non-biological methods such as electrochemical oxidation, advanced oxidation processes, photon assisted catalytic remediation, adsorption and membrane technology. The various biological methods emphasised includes strategies such as constructed wetland, vermitechnology, phytoremediation, bioaugmentation, quorum sensing and biofilm in the remediation of heavy metals from tannery wastewater (TWW) with special emphasize on chromium.

The interplay between microalgae and toxic metal(loid)s: mechanisms and implications in AMD phycoremediation coupled with Fe/Mn mineralization

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is low-pH with high concentration of sulfates and toxic metal(loid)s (e.g. As, Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn), thereby posing a global environmental problem. For decades, microalgae have been used to remediate metal(loid)s in AMD, as they have various adaptive mechanisms for tolerating extreme environmental stress. Their main phycoremediation mechanisms are biosorption, bioaccumulation, coupling with sulfate-reducing bacteria, alkalization, biotransformation, and Fe/Mn mineral formation. This review summarizes how microalgae cope with metal(loid) stress and their specific mechanisms of phycoremediation in AMD. Based on the universal physiological characteristics of microalgae and the properties of their secretions, several Fe/Mn mineralization mechanisms induced by photosynthesis, free radicals, microalgal-bacterial reciprocity, and algal organic matter are proposed. Notably, microalgae can also reduce Fe(III) and inhibit mineralization, which is environmentally unfavorable. Therefore, the comprehensive environmental effects of microalgal co-occurring and cyclical opposing processes must be carefully considered. Using chemical and biological perspectives, this review innovatively proposes several specific processes and mechanisms of Fe/Mn mineralization that are mediated by microalgae, providing a theoretical basis for the geochemistry of metal(loid)s and natural attenuation of pollutants in AMD.

Management of tannery waste effluents towards the reclamation of clean water using an integrated membrane system: A state-of-the-art review

Tanning and other leather processing methods utilize a large amount of freshwater, dyes, chemicals, and salts and produce toxic waste, raising questions regarding their environmental sensitivity and eco-friendly nature. Total suspended solids, total dissolved solids, chemical oxygen demand, and ions such as chromium, sulfate, and chloride turn tannery wastewater exceedingly toxic for any living species. Therefore, it is imperative to treat tannery effluent, and existing plants must be examined and upgraded to keep up with recent technological developments. Different conventional techniques to treat tannery wastewater have been reported based on their pollutant removal efficiencies, advantages, and disadvantages. Research on photo-assisted catalyst-enhanced deterioration has inferred that both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis can be established as green initiatives, the latter being more efficient at degrading organic pollutants. However, the scientific community experiences significant problems developing a feasible treatment technique owing to the long degradation times and low removal efficiency. Hence, there is a chance for an improved solution to the problem of treating tannery wastewater through the development of a hybrid technology that uses flocculation as the primary treatment, a unique integrated photo-catalyst in a precision-designed reactor as the secondary method, and finally, membrane-based tertiary treatment to recover the spent catalyst and reclaimable water. This review gives an understanding of the progressive advancement of a cutting-edge membrane-based system for the management of tanning industrial waste effluents towards the reclamation of clean water. Adaptable routes toward sludge disposal and the reviews on techno-economic assessments have been shown in detail, strengthening the scale-up confidence for implementing such innovative hybrid systems.

A new organosilane passivation agent prepared at ambient temperatures to inhibit pyrite oxidation for acid mine drainage control

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a significant environmental problem caused by the oxidation of pyrite and other metal sulfide ores. Organosilane passivation is an effective strategy to inhibit pyrite oxidation. However, synthetic organic silane passivation agents generally require temperatures of 50-80 °C, resulting in high energy consumption and high synthesis cost. In this study, a 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane -methyltrimethoxysilane (APS-MTMS) coatings was successfully prepared at ambient temperatures of 15-40 °C as a passivation agent to inhibit pyrite oxidation. Chemical leaching tests were used to study the inhibition performance of APS-MTMS for pyrite oxidation. The experimental results showed that the release of the total Fe from APS-MTMS-coated pyrite was 11.31 mg/L after chemical oxidation for 7 hours, and the passivation rate can reach 77.78%. The contact angle of the APS-MTMS-coated pyrite was significantly larger (140.4°) than that of the bare pyrite (58.8°), indicating that APS-MTMS prompted the formation of a superhydrophobic surface of pyrite, improving the oxidation resistance. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were applied to probe the interaction mechanism of APS-MTMS with pyrite. The results indicated that APS accelerated the Si-O-Si formation by amino protonation and enriched a crosslinked network of Si-O-Si and Fe-O-Si on the pyrite surface to prevent pyrite oxidation. This study provides a novel method for preparing organosilane passivation materials at ambient temperatures for AMD control.

Extensive investigation and beyond the removal of micro-polyvinyl chloride by microalgae to promote environmental health

Microplastics (MPs) remediation via algae could be a prospective strategy to address MPs pollution concerns. In this study, Chlorella sp. GEEL-08 was exposed to different gradient concentrations ranging from 0 to 200 mg L^-1 of polyvinyl chloride (PVC_0.2μm). Microalgal growth, total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and cations (Cu, Zn, Na, and K) removal were investigated. The oxidative stress enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malonaldehyde (MDA) were also assessed. The addition of 50 mg L^-1 mPVC resulted in the highest growth along with >99% removal of nutrients (TN and TP) and >80% removal of cations. However, the addition of 100-200 mg L^-1 mPVC inhibited microalgal growth by 8.8-12.3%. The stress-induced by mPVC was highly observed at 200 mg L^-1 mPVC on the 4th d with 70.8 U mg_prot^-1 and 62.3 nmol mg_prot^-1 of SOD and MDA, respectively. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra confirmed that microalgal biomass retained mPVC. Thermogravimetric analysis/derivative thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTG) spectra showed that the organic matter of microalgal biomass attached with mPVC was decomposed faster than control, indicating the possibilities of using this biomass for pyrolysis and the formation of bio-products.

Synthesis of Poly-Alumino-Ferric Sulphate Coagulant from Acid Mine Drainage by Precipitation

The wastes generated from both operational and abandoned coal and metal mining are an environmental concern. These wastes, including acid mine drainage (AMD), are treated to abate the devastating effects they have on the environment before disposal. However, AMD contains valuable resources that can be recovered to subsidize treatment costs. Two of the major constituents of coal AMD are iron and aluminium, which can be recovered and engineered to function as coagulants. This work examines the potential of producing a poly-alumino-ferric sulphate (AMD-PAFS) coagulant from coal acidic drainage solutions. The co-precipitation of iron and aluminium is conducted at pH values of 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0 using sodium hydroxide in order to evaluate the recovery of iron and aluminium as hydroxide precipitates while minimizing the co-precipitation of the other heavy metals. The precipitation at pH 5.0 yields iron and aluminium recovery of 99.9 and 94.7%, respectively. An increase in the pH from 5.0 to 7.0 increases the recovery of aluminium to 99.1%, while the recovery of iron remains the same. The precipitate formed at pH 5.0 is used to produce a coagulant consisting of 89.5% and 10.0% iron and aluminium, respectively. The production of the coagulant is carried out by dissolving the precipitate in 5.0% (w/w) sulphuric acid. Subsequently, the treatment of the brewery wastewater shows that the AMD-PAFS coagulant is as efficient as the conventional poly ferric sulphate (PFS) coagulant. The turbidity removal is 91.9 and 87.8%, while the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal is 56.0 and 64.0% for AMD-PAFS and PFS coagulants, respectively. The developed process, which can easily be incorporated into existing AMD treatment plants, not only reduces the sludge disposal problems but also creates revenue from waste.

Co-treatment of abandoned mine drainage and Marcellus Shale flowback water for use in hydraulic fracturing

Flowback water generated during shale gas extraction in Pennsylvania is mostly reused for hydraulic fracturing operation. Abandoned mine drainage (AMD), one of the most widespread threats to water quality in Pennsylvania, can potentially serve as a make-up water source to enable flowback water reuse. This study demonstrated co-treatment of flowback water and AMD produced in northeastern Pennsylvania in a pilot-scale system consisting of rapid mix reactor, flocculation tank and sedimentation tank. Sulfate concentration in the finished water can be controlled at a desired level (i.e., below 100 mg/L) by adjusting the ratio of flowback water and AMD in the influent. Fe³⁺ contained in the AMD can serve as a coagulant to enhance the removal of suspended solids, during which Fe²⁺ is co-precipitated and the total iron is reduced to a desirable level. Solid waste generated in this process (i.e., barite) will incorporate over 99% of radium present in the flowback water, which offers the possibility to control the fate of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) brought to the surface by unconventional gas extraction. Sludge recirculation in the treatment process can be used to increase the size of barite particles formed by mixing flowback water and AMD to meet specifications for use as a weighting agent in drilling fluid. This alternative management approach for NORM can be used to offset the treatment cost and promote flowback water reuse, reduce environmental impacts of AMD and reduce pressure on fresh water sources.
