The most fundamental and popular literature on functional near-infrared spectroscopy: a bibliometric analysis of the top 100 most cited articles

Background

Functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has developed rapidly in recent years, and there are more and more studies on fNIRS. At present, there is no bibliometric analysis of the top 100 most cited articles on fNIRS research.

Objective

To identify the top 100 most cited articles on fNIRS and analyze those most fundamental and popular articles through bibliometric research methods.

Methods

The literature on fNIRS of web of science from 1990 to 2023 was searched and the top 100 most cited articles were identified by citations. Use the bibliometrix package in R studio and VOSviewer for data analysis and plotting to obtain the output characteristics and citation status of these 100 most cited articles, and analyze research trends in this field through keywords.

Results

A total of 9,424 articles were retrieved from web of science since 1990. The average citation number of the 100 articles was 457.4 (range from 260 to 1,366). Neuroimage published the most articles (n = 31). Villringer, A. from Leipzig University had the largest number of top 100 papers. Harvard University (n = 22) conducted most cited articles. The United States, Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom had most cited articles, respectively. The most common keywords were near-infrared spectroscopy, activation, cerebral-blood-flow, brain, newborn-infants, oxygenation, cortex, fMRI, spectroscopy. The fund sources mostly came from National Institutes of Health Unitd States (NIH) and United States Department of Health Human Services (n = 28).

Conclusion

Neuroimage was the most popular journal. The top countries, institutions, and authors were the United States, Harvard University, and Villringer, A., respectively. Researchers and institutions from North America and Europe contributed the most. Near-infrared spectroscopy, activation, cerebral-blood-flow, brain, newborn-infants, oxygenation, cortex, fmri, spectroscopy, stimulation, blood-flow, light-propagation, infants, tissue comprise the future research directions and potential topic hotspots for fNIRS.

The top 100 most cited articles in helical tomotherapy: a scoping review

Objective

The purpose of this scoping review was to explore the top 100 most cited articles in helical tomotherapy (HT) through bibliometric analysis and visualization tools, help researchers comprehensively understand the research hotspots of HT, and provide clear and intuitive network visualization.

Methods

The Web of Science Core Collection and the search strategy of "Title (TI)=(tomotherapy)" were used to search for articles related to HT as of 27 May 2023. The top 100 most cited articles were obtained by sorting "citations: highest first". From these top 100 most cited articles, the following information was extracted: journals, years and months, countries, authors, types of tumor treated, and topics. The VOSviewer software was introduced for visualizing all the articles related to HT.

Results

The top 100 most cited articles in HT were published between 1999 and 2019. The citation counts of these articles ranges from 326 to 45, with a total of 8,422 citations at the time of searching. The index of citations per year (CPY) ranges from 22.32 to 2.45. These articles originated from 17 countries, with most publications from the United States (n=50), followed by Canada (n=12), Italy (n=10), Germany (n=7) and Belgium (n=5). The International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics published the highest number of articles (n=31), followed by Radiotherapy and Oncology (n=20), Medical Physics (n=13) and Strahlentherapie und Onkologie (n=12). In terms of specific tumor types, head and neck cancer (n=15) is the most common disease, followed by cancers with complex target structures (n=14), breast cancer (n=12), prostate cancer (n=10) and lung cancer (n=8). The most common research topics also include dosimetric comparison (n = 44), quality assurance (n = 12) and Megavoltage CT (n = 8).

Conclusion

This scoping review provides a comprehensive list of the 100 most cited articles in HT. This analysis offers valuable insights into the current research directions of HT that can be utilized by researchers, clinicians, and policy-makers.

Use of topic modeling to assess research trends in the journal Gynecologic Oncology

STUDY OBJECTIVE

There is scant research identifying thematic trends within medical research. This work may provide insight into how a given field values certain topics. We assessed the feasibility of using a machine learning approach to determine the most common research themes published in Gynecologic Oncology over a thirty-year period and to subsequently evaluate how interest in these topics changed over time.

METHODS

We retrieved the abstracts of all original research published in Gynecologic Oncology from 1990 to 2020 using PubMed. Abstract text was processed through a natural language processing algorithm and clustered into topical themes using latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) prior to manual labeling. Topics were investigated for temporal trends.

RESULTS

We retrieved 12,586 original research articles, of which 11,217 were evaluable for subsequent analysis. Twenty-three research topics were selected at the completion of topic modeling. The topics of basic science genetics, epidemiologic methods, and chemotherapy experienced the greatest increase over the time period, while postoperative outcomes, reproductive age cancer management, and cervical dysplasia experienced the greatest decline. Interest in basic science research remained relatively constant. Topics were additionally reviewed for words indicative of either surgical or medical therapy. Both surgical and medical topics saw increasing interest, with surgical topics experiencing a greater increase and representing a higher proportion of published topics.

CONCLUSIONS

Topic modeling, a type of unsupervised machine learning, was successfully used to identify trends in research themes. The application of this technique provided insight into how the field of gynecologic oncology values the components of its scope of practice and therefore how it may choose to allocate grant funding, disseminate research, and participate in the public discourse.

The 100 Most Cited Papers in Radiotherapy or Chemoradiotherapy for Cervical Cancer: 1990-2020

Objective

This work aims to analyze the 100 most cited papers in radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy for cervical cancer.

Methods

The 100 most cited papers in radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy between 1990 and 2020 were identified with Thompson Reuters Web of Science citation indexing on August 24, 2020. The publication years, source titles, countries/regions, total citations, and average citations per year were extracted from the Web of Science. The research type and research domain were classified by the authors.

Results

These 100 papers were cited a total of 28,714 times, and the median number of citations was 169.5 (ranging from 116 to 1,700 times). The most cited paper was “Concurrent cisplatin-based radiotherapy and chemotherapy for locally advanced cervical cancer” by Rose et al., with a total citation of 1,700 times. The International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics (40 papers), Radiotherapy and Oncology (14 papers), and the Journal of Clinical Oncology (12 papers) published the largest number of papers. USA (47 papers), Austria (18 papers), Canada (13 papers), and England (13 papers) contributed the largest number of papers. Image-guided adaptive brachytherapy (IGABT) had the largest number of papers (25 papers). Concurrent chemotherapy was the most cited research domain, with 10,663 total citations and 592.4 citations per paper.

Conclusion

In the present study, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of the 100 most cited papers in radiotherapy or concurrent chemoradiotherapy for cervical cancer in the past 30 years. IGABT and concurrent chemotherapy were the most cited research domains.

The one hundred most cited publications in prostate brachytherapy

PURPOSE

The aim of this study is to identify the leaders in research on prostate brachytherapy through a bibliometric analysis of the top 100 most cited publications in the field.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

A broad search was performed with the term "prostate brachytherapy" using the Web of Science database to generate wide-ranging results that were reviewed by reading the abstracts and, if necessary, the articles to select the top 100 most cited publications.

RESULTS

The median of the total citation count was 187 (range 132-1464). The median citation per year index (citations/year since publication) was 13.5 (range 6.3-379.0). In all publications, the first author was also the corresponding author. The top publishing countries of the first author included the United States (n = 78), Canada (n = 6), the UK (n = 5), and Germany (n = 4). The journal with the most publications was the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics (n = 38). There were 27 more publications on low-dose-rate (LDR) than on high-dose-rate (HDR) (43 vs 16) among the top 100. HDR publications had only one first author that had three articles in comparison to LDR publications, which had four first authors, each with three articles on LDR. The United States was the leading country in 43.8% of HDR publications (n = 7) and 88.4% of LDR publications (n = 38).

CONCLUSIONS

Our bibliometric analysis of the top 100 most cited publications clearly demonstrates the North American dominance in the publications of prostate brachytherapy, especially in LDR. However, European first authors were more frequent in HDR publications.

Bibliometric analysis of the 100 most cited articles on cervical cancer radiotherapy

PURPOSE

To identify the 100 most cited research articles on cervical cancer radiotherapy.

METHODS

The Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched to identify the 100 most cited articles on cervical cancer radiotherapy as of September 29, 2019. Articles were ranked based on the total citations received from 2 databases. One hundred articles about radiotherapy for cervical cancer were identified. The following important information was extracted: author, journal, year and month of publication, country or region, and radiotherapy technologies.

RESULTS

The 100 most cited articles on cervical cancer radiotherapy were published between 1964 and 2016, and the total citations from 2 databases ranged from 3478 to 211, including a total of 49,262 citations as of September 29, 2019. The index of citations per year ranged from 170.4 to 13.1. These articles were from 16 countries or regions, with most publications being from the United States (n = 38), followed by Austria (n = 15), Canada (n = 8), France (n = 8) and the United Kingdom (n = 7). The International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics produced the most articles (n = 42), followed by Radiotherapy and Oncology (n = 13), Cancer (n = 8) and Journal of Clinical Oncology (n = 7). These articles were categorized as original studies (n = 86), recommendations (n = 5), guidelines (n = 5) and reviews (n = 4). Of the 100 most cited articles, intracavitary brachytherapy (n = 50) and 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (n = 34) were the most commonly used treatment techniques.

CONCLUSION

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report and analysis of the most cited articles on cervical cancer radiotherapy. This bibliographic study presents the history of technological development in external radiation therapy and brachytherapy. Brachytherapy is an indispensable part of radiotherapy for cervical cancer. The International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics is the journal with the most publications related to cervical cancer radiotherapy.

The 100 most cited articles in prostate cancer brachytherapy: systematic review and bibliometric analysis

Purpose

The aim of this study was to identify the 100 most cited research articles in prostate cancer brachytherapy (PCB) and to review the characteristics of these citation.

Material and methods

The Web of Science Core Collection was used to identify the 100 most cited articles in PCB as of December 31^st, 2019. The following important information was extracted: year and month of publication, title, journal, country of origin, authors, type of article, treatment modality, and topics.

Results

The 100 most cited articles in PCB were published between 1999 and 2018, and the number of citations ranged from 455 to 54; these articles had collectively been cited 10,331 times at the time of search. These articles were from 11 countries, with most publications being from the United States (n = 61), followed by Canada (n = 10), the United Kingdom (n = 8), and Germany (n = 5). The “International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics” published the most articles (n = 47), followed by the “Journal of Urology” (n = 11), “Radiotherapy and Oncology” (n = 10), “Cancer” (n = 7), and “Urology” (n = 6). Permanent interstitial brachytherapy (n = 52) was the most widely used treatment modality, followed by temporary brachytherapy (n = 45). Disease control (n = 51) was the most common topic, followed by side effects (n = 44) and quality of life (n = 27).

Conclusions

The bibliometric analysis presents a detailed list of the 100 most cited articles in prostate cancer brachytherapy. There are clear recommendations for treatment with prostate cancer brachytherapy. The goal of prostate cancer brachytherapy is to improve long-term outcomes and quality of life.

Dose-effect response in image-guided adaptive brachytherapy for cervical cancer: A systematic review and meta-regression analysis

PURPOSE

This study aimed to integrate and update the dose-effect relationship between volumetric dose and local control for cervical cancer brachytherapy.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

We identified studies that reported high-risk clinical target volume (HR-CTV) D₉₀ and local control probability by searching PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library databases through Oct 27, 2019. The regression analyses were performed using a probit model between HR-CTV D₉₀, D₁₀₀, intermediate-risk clinical target volume (IR-CTV) D₉₀, and dose to Point A vs. local control probability. Subgroup analyses were performed according to stratification: time of local control, income level of the country or region, stage of cancer, pathology, mean volume of HR-CTV, dose rate, image modality, concurrent chemoradiotherapy proportion, interstitial proportion, and mean overall treatment time.

RESULTS

Thirty-three studies encompassing 2893 patients were included. The probit model showed a significant relationship between the HR-CTV D₉₀ value and the local control probability, p < 0.0001. The D₉₀ corresponding to a probability of 90% local control was 83.7 Gy_EQD2,10 (80.6-87.8 Gy_EQD2,10). Of the 33 studies included in our analysis, eight studies, including 1172 patients, reported the IR-CTV D₉₀ value, ranging from 59.1 Gy_EQD2,10 to 72.3 Gy_EQD2,10. The probit model also showed a significant relationship between the IR-CTV D₉₀ value and the local control probability, p = 0.0464. The 60 Gy_EQD2,10 for IR-CTV D₉₀ corresponded to an 86.1% local control probability (82.0%-89.8%).

CONCLUSIONS

A significant dependence of local control on HR-CTV D₉₀ and IR-CTV D₉₀ was found. A tumor control probability of >90% can be expected at doses >84 Gy_EQD2,10 and 69 Gy_EQD2,10, respectively, based on an updated meta-regression analysis.
