Incorporation of quaternary ammonium chitooligosaccharides on ZnO/palygorskite nanocomposites for enhancing antibacterial activities

Kaolinite-mediated synthesis of ultra-small silver nanoparticles with high antimicrobial activity

Ultra-small Ag nanoparticles (<5 nm) loaded on a kaolinite surface were successfully prepared in large batches by a dry-process, displaying excellent broad-spectrum antimicrobial ability and size-dependent activity. This Ag-loaded kaolinite (Ag@AT/K) inhibited the growth of pathogenic bacteria and accelerated wound healing in in vivo experiments on MRSA-infected wounds. This work provides a new strategy for the preparation of mineral-based nanoscale antibacterial materials.

Virological evaluation of natural and modified attapulgite against porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus

BACKGROUND

The Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV) has caused significant economic losses in the global swine industry. As a potential drug for treating diarrhea, the antiviral properties of attapulgite deserve further study.

METHODS

In this study, various methods such as RT-qPCR, Western blot, viral titer assay, Cytopathic Effect, immunofluorescence analysis and transmission electron microscopy were used to detect the antiviral activity of attapulgite and to assess its inhibitory effect on PEDV.

RESULTS

When exposed to the same amount of virus, there was a significant decrease in the expression of the S protein, resulting in a viral titer reduction from 10-5.613 TCID50/mL to 10-2.90 TCID50/mL, which represents a decrease of approximately 102.6 folds. Results of cytopathic effect and indirect immunofluorescence also indicate a notable decrease in viral infectivity after attapulgite treatment. Additionally, it was observed that modified materials after acidification had weaker antiviral efficacy compared to powdered samples that underwent ultrasonic disintegration, which showed the strongest antiviral effects.

CONCLUSION

As a result, Attapulgite powders can trap and adsorb viruses to inhibit PEDV in vitro, leading to loss of viral infectivity. This study provides new materials for the development of novel disinfectants and antiviral additives.

Quaternary ammonium carboxymethyl chitosan composite hydrogel with efficient antibacterial and antioxidant properties for promoting wound healing

Multifunctional hydrogels have been developed to meet the various requirements of wound healing. Herein, an innovative hydrogel (QCMC-HA-PEG) was formed through the Schiff base reaction, composed of quaternary ammonium-modified carboxymethyl chitosan (QCMC), hyaluronic acid (HA), and 8-arms Polyethylene Glycol aldehyde (8-ARM-PEG-CHO). The resulting hydrogels exhibited good mechanical and adhesive properties with improved antibacterial efficacy against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria compared to CMC hydrogels. QCMC-HA-PEG hydrogels demonstrated remarkable adhesive ability in lap-shear test. Furthermore, the incorporation of MnO2 nanosheets into the hydrogel significantly enhanced its reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging and oxygen generation capabilities. Finally, experimental results from a full-thickness skin wound model revealed that the QCMC-HA-PEG@MnO2 hydrogel promoted skin epithelization, collagen deposition, and inflammatory regulation significantly accelerated the wound healing process. Therefore, QCMC-HA-PEG@MnO2 hydrogel could be a promising wound dressing to promote wound healing.

Chitooligosaccharide and Its Derivatives: Potential Candidates as Food Additives and Bioactive Components

Chitooligosaccharide (CHOS), a depolymerized chitosan, can be prepared via physical, chemical, and enzymatic hydrolysis, or a combination of these techniques. The superior properties of CHOS have attracted attention as alternative additives or bioactive compounds for various food and biomedical applications. To increase the bioactivities of a CHOS, its derivatives have been prepared via different methods and were characterized using various analytical methods including FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. CHOS derivatives such as carboxylated CHOS, quaternized CHOS, and others showed their potential as potent anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, neuroprotective, and anti-cancer agents, which could further be used for human health benefits. Moreover, enhanced antibacterial and antioxidant bioactivities, especially for a CHOS-polyphenol conjugate, could play a profound role in shelf-life extension and the safety assurance of perishable foods via the inhibition of spoilage microorganisms and pathogens and lipid oxidation. Also, the effectiveness of CHOS derivatives for shelf-life extension can be augmented when used in combination with other preservative technologies. Therefore, this review provides an overview of the production of a CHOS and its derivatives, as well as their potential applications in food as either additives or nutraceuticals. Furthermore, it revisits recent advancements in translational research and in vivo studies on CHOS and its derivatives in the medical-related field.

Application of carboxymethyl chitosan-based coating in fresh-cut apple preservation: Incorporation of guava leaf flavonoids and their noncovalent interaction study

Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) has antibacterial activity and coating-forming ability. Under the impact of noncovalent interactions, the bioactivity and functionality of CMCS may be positively affected by the coexistence of flavonoids. This study investigated the effect of a CMCS coating incorporated with flavonoids from guava (Psidium guajava L. cv. Carmine) leaf (GLF) on the refrigeration of fresh-cut apples for preservation. Compared with the CMCS group, apples treated with the CMCS-GLF coating showed better quality (weight loss, browning index, firmness), nutritional value (ascorbic acid and total phenolic content), and microbial safety during storage. The mechanism study indicated that the hydrogen bonding, electrostatic, and hydrophobic interactions between CMCS and GLF (the carboxymethyl moiety of CMCS had the highest response priority and binding strength of the interaction with -C-O of GLF) changed the surface charge distribution and microstructure of CMCS, and increased its molecular weight, particle size, viscosity, and hydrophobicity. Thus, the CMCS-GLF coating exerted better bioactivities (antibacterial and antioxidant activity), and its film showed better mechanical and barrier properties. These results revealed that the noncovalent interaction with GLF could modify the physiochemical properties of CMCS, which was beneficial to improve its bioactivity and application value in fresh fruit preservation.

The nanocomposites of modified attapulgite with vitamin E and mannan oligosaccharide regulated the intestinal epithelial barrier and improved intestinal microbiota composition to prevent diarrhea in weaned piglets

BACKGROUND

Overuse of antibiotics contributes to bacterial resistance in animals. Therefore, it is necessary to find a new way to ensure animal health and promote animal growth. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of mannan oligosaccharide (MOS)/vitamin E (VE)/attapulgite (APT) nanocomposites (SLK1, SLK3, SLK5) on growth performance and intestinal health in weaned piglets. Each 1 kg of SLK1, SLK3 or SLK5 contains 50 g of vitamin E, and each had a different MOS concentration [SLK1 (50 g kg ^-1 MOS), SLK3 (100 g kg ^-1 MOS), SLK5 (150 g kg ^-1 MOS)]. In total, 135 piglets were randomly divided into five groups (normal control group, traditional antibiotic substitutes group, SLK1 group, SLK3 group and SLK5 group), and growth performance, diarrhea index, intestinal epithelial barrier function and intestinal microbial composition were measured.

RESULTS

SLK1 and SLK5 significantly decreased diarrhea frequency in weaned piglets (p < 0.05). Furthermore, SLK5 significantly increased survival rate of weaned piglets compared to the traditional antibiotic substitutes group (p < 0.05). SLK5 also increased villus height of ileum, and increased goblet number of the jejunum (p < 0.05). 16S rRNA sequencing showed that SLK5 significantly regulated intestinal colonic microbiota composition (p < 0.05). Specifically, SLK5 significantly increased the abundance of Phascolarctobacterium succinatutens in the cecum and increased the abundance of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium in the colon (p < 0.05). In addition, dietary supplementation with 1 kg T^-1 SLK5 also significantly increased the propionate content in the colon, which is significantly correlated with Phascolarctobacterium (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Dietary supplementation with 1 kg T^-1 SLK5 improved intestinal epithelial barrier function, and regulated intestinal microbiota composition to prevent diarrhea in weaned piglets. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Construction and application of nano ZnO/eugenol@yam starch/microcrystalline cellulose active antibacterial film

The goal of this study was to develop new biocomposite films that can better protect and prolong the shelf life of food. Here, a ZnO: eugenol@yam starch/microcrystalline cellulose (ZnO:Eu@SC) antibacterial active film was constructed. Because of the advantages of metal oxides and plant essential oils, codoping with these can effectively improve the physicochemical and functional properties of composite films. The addition of an appropriate amount of nano-ZnO improved the compactness and thermostability, reduced the moisture sensitivity, and enhanced the mechanical and barrier properties of the film. ZnO:Eu@SC exhibited good controlled release of nano-ZnO and Eu in food simulants. Nano-ZnO and Eu release was controlled by two mechanisms: diffusion (primary) and swelling (secondary). After loading Eu, the antimicrobial activity of ZnO:Eu@SC was significantly enhanced, resulting in a synergistic antibacterial effect. Z₄:Eu@SC film extended the pork shelf life by 100 % (25 °C). In humus, the ZnO:Eu@SC film was effectively degraded into fragments. Therefore, the ZnO:Eu@SC film has excellent potential in food active packaging.

Effects of dietary supplementation with different levels of palygorskite-based composite on growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and meat quality of broiler chickens

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different levels of palygorskite-based composite (PBC) on growth performance, antioxidant status, and meat quality of broilers. A total of 320 one-day-old mixed-sex Ross 308 broiler chicks were allocated to 1 of 5 groups with 8 replicates of 8 birds each, and given a basal diet supplemented with 0, 250, 500, 1,000, and 2,000 mg/kg PBC for a 42-day trial, respectively. PBC quadratically increased feed efficiency during the late and overall experimental periods (P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, 1,000 mg/kg PBC increased feed efficiency during the overall period (P < 0.05). PBC linearly increased serum total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) activity at 21 d and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity at both 21 d and 42 d (P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, PBC supplementation, regardless of its level, increased 21-day serum SOD activity (P < 0.05). The 21-day serum GSH-Px activity was increased by PBC when its level exceeded 250 mg/kg (P < 0.05). PBC linearly increased 42-day total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) activity, but linearly decreased 42-day malondialdehyde level in liver (P < 0.05). An addition of PBC, irrespective of its level, increased 42-day hepatic T-AOC activity (P < 0.05). PBC quadratically increased 45-min yellowness value and linearly increased 24-h pH value, but quadratically decreased 24-h lightness value and linearly and quadratically reduced 24-h drip loss in breast muscle (P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, the 24-h drip loss of breast muscle was decreased by PBC, regardless of its dosage (P < 0.05). An addition of PBC linearly increased 42-day T-AOC and T-SOD activities of breast muscle (P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, muscle T-SOD activity was increased by PBC, regardless of its administration level (P < 0.05). These results suggested that PBC could improve growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and meat quality of broilers, and its recommended dosage is 1,000 mg/kg.

Dietary supplementation modified attapulgite promote intestinal epithelial barrier and regulate intestinal microbiota composition to prevent diarrhea in weaned piglets

Attapulgite is a kind of natural clay mineral. Its unique pore structure makes it an ideal adsorption material and carrier material. However, the beneficial effect of modified attapulgites (SLK) in livestock is still unknown. The study was aimed to investigate the beneficial effect of modified attapulgites on diarrhea. 135 piglets were randomly divided into 5 groups and fed with control diet, traditional antibiotic substitute (TAS) supplementation diet, 0.5 mg/kg SLK supplementation diet, 1 mg/kg SLK supplementation diet, and 1.5 mg/kg SLK supplementation diet. This experiment lased two weeks. According to our result, 1.5 mg/kg SLK supplementation diet significantly decreased diarrhea score and diarrhea frequency, and effectively increased survival rate (P < 0.05). Dietary supplementation with 1.5 mg/kg SLK significantly increased high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), and choline esterase (CHE) concentration in serum (P < 0.05). AS compared with TAS group, 1.5 mg/kg SLK supplementation diet significantly decreased villus height and increased goblet number in jejunum, and increased villus height and decreased goblet number in ileum (P < 0.05). 1.5 mg/kg SLK supplementation diet also significantly changed cecal microbial community composition, including increased Limosilactobacillus abundance (P < 0.05). 1.5 mg/kg SLK supplementation diet significantly increased colonic microbial community composition, including decreased Escherichia-shigella abundance and increased Limosilactobacillus abundance (P < 0.05). Moreover, 1.5 mg/kg SLK supplementation diet significantly increased valerate, propionate, butyrate, and total short chain fatty acid contents in colon (P < 0.05). Valerate, propionate, butyrate, and total short chain fatty acid significantly associated with Lactobacillus. Fourerenilla and Fourerenilla.unclassfied significantly associated with acetate contents in colon (P < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary supplementation with modified apptapulgites significantly regulate intestinal microbial community composition and alleviate intestinal epithelial barrier to prevent diarrhea in piglets.

Molecular mechanism of epicatechin gallate binding with carboxymethyl β-glucan and its effect on antibacterial activity

The non-covalent binding between flavanols and polysaccharides has impacts on their bioactivities, but the binding mechanism is less understood. This work aimed to unveil the non-covalent interactions between epicatechin gallate (ECG) and anionic carboxymethyl Poria cocos polysaccharide (CMP_N) at the structural and molecular level based on the synergistic antibacterial effect between them. The results suggested that there was hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic and electrostatic interaction between ECG and CMP_N, which was also supported by the results of molecular dynamics simulations. The resulting changes in physicochemical properties enhanced the antibacterial activity of the ECG-CMP_N mixture. More specifically, through two-dimensional Fourier transform infrared correlation spectrum (2D-FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) analysis, COO^- in CMP_N carboxymethyl and CO in ECG galloyl had the highest response priority and binding strength in the interaction, allowing us to conclude the critical functional groups that affect the non-covalent interactions of polysaccharide and flavanols and their bioactivities.

Synergistic activities of silver indium sulfide/nickel molybdenum sulfide nanostructures anchored on clay mineral for light-driven bactericidal performance, and detection of uric acid from gout patient serum

In this study, the hydrothermal method was used to synthesis of silver indium sulfide/nickel molybdenum sulfide (AgInS₂/NiMoS₄) nanostructure and decorated on Palygorskite (Plg) as an excellent carrier of antibacterial materials. The performance of the prepared AgInS₂/NiMoS₄/Plg composites was investigated for light-driven antibacterial process and detection of uric acid from biological samples. The result shows the highest antibacterial activity of the AgInS₂/NiMoS₄/Plg with the minimum inhibitory concentrations about 0.2-0.3 mg/mL. The prepared AgInS₂/NiMoS₄/Plg as sensor depicted enhanced peroxidase-like activity for detection of acid uric. The detection limit of acid uric by AgInS₂/NiMoS₄/Plg was about 26.1 nM. Therefore, the AgInS₂/NiMoS₄/Plg can be developed in the bactericidal process and sensing in complex biological systems.

Potential Medical Applications of Chitooligosaccharides

Chitooligosaccharides, also known as chitosan oligomers or chitooligomers, are made up of chitosan with a degree of polymerization (DP) that is less than 20 and an average molecular weight (MW) that is lower than 3.9 kDa. COS can be produced through enzymatic conversions using chitinases, physical and chemical applications, or a combination of these strategies. COS is of significant interest for pharmacological and medical applications due to its increased water solubility and non-toxicity, with a wide range of bioactivities, including antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, neuroprotective, anticancer, and antioxidant effects. This review aims to outline the recent advances and potential applications of COS in various diseases and conditions based on the available literature, mainly from preclinical research. The prospects of further in vivo studies and translational research on COS in the medical field are highlighted.

Fibrous Clays in Dermopharmaceutical and Cosmetic Applications: Traditional and Emerging Perspectives

Functionalization of natural clay minerals for high value-added pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications receives significant research attention worldwide attributable to a rising demand and ongoing search for green, efficient, economically sustainable and ecofriendly geomaterials. Fibrous clays, i.e. palygorskite and sepiolite, are naturally-occurring hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate clay minerals with 2:1 layer-chain microstructure and one-dimensional nanofibrous morphology. Due to their unique structural, textural and compatibility features, over the past decade, fibrous clays and their organic modified derivatives are increasingly used in the dermopharmaceutical and cosmetic fields as excipients, active agents or nanocarriers to develop novel skin delivery systems or to modify drug release profile for enhanced health effects. This comprehensive review presents the up-to-date information on fibrous clays used in topically-applied products for therapeutic and cosmetic purposes with the focus on their performance-related structural characteristics and the underlying mechanisms. The recent advancement of fibrous clay-based skin delivery systems was summarized in wide range of applications including pelotherapy, wound healing, antimicrobial action, coloration and UV protection. An overview of the commonly used topically-applied dosage forms (powders, hydrogels, films, peloids and Pickering emulsion) as well as the toxicological aspects was also included, which might provide guidance to the design and development of fibrous clay-based skin delivery systems.

Fabrication of ZnO@Plant Polyphenols/Cellulose as Active Food Packaging and Its Enhanced Antibacterial Activity

To investigate the efficient use of bioresources and bioproducts, plant polyphenol (PPL) was extracted from larch bark and further applied to prepare ZnO@PPL/Cel with cellulose to examine its potential as an active package material. The structure and morphology were fully characterized by XRD, SEM, FTIR, XPS and Raman spectra. It was found that PPL is able to cover ZnO and form a coating layer. In addition, PPL cross-links with cellulose and makes ZnO distribute evenly on the cellulose fibers. Coating with PPL creates a pinecone-like morphology in ZnO, which is constructed by subunits of 50 nm ZnO slices. The interactions among ZnO, PPL and cellulose have been attributed to hydrogen bonding, which plays an important role in guiding the formation of composites. The antibacterial properties against Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) were tested by the inhibition zone method. Our composite ZnO@PPL/Cel has superior antibacterial activity compared to ZnO/Cel. The antibacterial mechanism has also been elaborated on. The low cost, simple preparation method and good performance of ZnO@PPL/Cel suggest the potential for it to be applied as active food packaging.

Facile Preparation of Organo-Modified ZnO/Attapulgite Nanocomposites Loaded with Monoammonium Glycyrrhizinate via Mechanical Milling and Their Synergistic Antibacterial Effect

In this study, monoammonium glycyrrhizinate (MAG) was introduced into cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB)-modified ZnO/attapulgite (APT) via a mechanical process to form performance-enhanced antibacterial nanocomposites (MAG/C–ZnO/APT). The APT supported ZnO nanocomposite (ZnO/APT) was prepared by a conventional precipitation method, and 20–50 nm of globular ZnO nanoparticles were uniformly decorated on APT nanorods. The FTIR and zeta potential analyses demonstrated that modification by CTAB facilitated the loading of MAG into ZnO/APT by H-bonding and electrostatic interactions. Antibacterial evaluation results indicate that MAG/C–ZnO/APT nanocomposites with CTAB and MAG doses of 2.5% and 0.25%, respectively, exhibited synergistically enhanced inhibitory activities against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and extended-spectrum β-lactamases Escherichia coli, with minimum inhibitory concentrations of 1, 0.1, 0.25, 5, 0.1, and 2.5 mg/mL, respectively, which are better than those of ZnO/APT, C–ZnO/APT and MAG. Moreover, the nanocomposites had low cytotoxicity on human normal cell line L-O2. Therefore, this study provided a more effective strategy to extend the antibacterial spectrum and strengthen the inhibitory effects of antibiotic-free materials to address increasingly serious situations of microbial infection.

Dietary palygorskite-based antibacterial agent supplementation as an alternative to antibiotic improves growth performance, intestinal mucosal barrier function, and immunity in broiler chickens

The aim of this study was to evaluate effects of palygorskite-based antibacterial agent (PAA) as an alternative to antibiotic on growth performance, intestinal barrier function, and immunity in broilers. Three hundred and eighty-four mixed-sex 1-day-old Ross 308 broiler chicks were allocated into 6 groups of 8 replicates with 8 birds each. Birds were given a basal diet, an antibiotic diet (50 mg/kg chlortetracycline), and the basal diet supplemented with 250, 500, 1,000, and 2,000 mg/kg PAA for 42 d, respectively. Compared with control group, supplementing 1,000 mg/kg PAA reduced overall feed conversion ratio (P < 0.05), with its value being similar to that of antibiotic group (P > 0.05). However, a higher level of PAA (2,000 mg/kg) increased feed conversion ratio during the late period (P < 0.05). The 1,000 and 2,000 mg/kg PAA decreased plasma endotoxin and D-lactate levels at 42 d (P < 0.05) to comparable values (P > 0.05). The 1,000 mg/kg PAA decreased jejunal crypt depth, while 500 and 1,000 mg/kg PAA increased the ratio between jejunal villus height and crypt depth at 42 d (P < 0.05), with their values being similar to antibiotic group (P > 0.05). The highest level of PAA increased 42-d jejunal mucosal secretory immunoglobulin A and immunoglobulin M concentrations (P < 0.05). The 1,000 and 2,000 mg/kg PAA reduced 21-d interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels in serum and ileal mucosa and 42-d interferon-γ level in serum and jejunal mucosa (P < 0.05), which did not differ from antibiotic group (P > 0.05). Moreover, PAA administration, regardless of its dosage, reduced 42-d serum TNF-α concentration, and 500 to 2,000 mg/kg PAA decreased 21-d and 42-d jejunal and 42-d ileal mucosal TNF-α levels (P < 0.05), with their values being comparable with antibiotic group (P > 0.05). The results suggested that PAA as an alternative to antibiotic could improve growth performance, intestinal barrier function, and immunity of broilers, and its optimal dosage was 1,000 mg/kg.

Palygorskite-Based Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Nanocomposite for Enhanced Antibacterial Activities

A synergistic antibacterial strategy is effective in enhancing the antibacterial efficacy of a single antibacterial material. Plant essential oils (PEOs) are safe antibacterial agents. However, some of their characteristics such as intense aroma, volatility, and poor thermal stability limit their antibacterial activity and applications. In this paper, five kinds of PEOs were incorporated onto ZnO/palygorskite (ZnO/PAL) nanoparticles by a simple adsorption process to form organic-inorganic nanocomposites (PEOs/ZnO/PAL) with excellent antibacterial properties. TEM and SEM analyses demonstrated that ZnO nanoparticles uniformly anchored onto the surface of rod-like PAL, and that the structure of ZnO/PAL maintained after the incorporation of ZnO nanoparticles and PEOs. It was found that carvacrol/ZnO/palygorskite (CAR/ZnO/PAL) exhibited higher antibacterial activities than other PEOs/ZnO/PAL nanocomposites, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 0.5 mg/mL and 1.5 mg/mL against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), respectively. Moreover, the antibacterial efficiency of CAR/ZnO/PAL nanocomposites was superior to that of ZnO/PAL and pure CAR, demonstrating the synergistic effect that occurs in the combined system. PAL serving as a carrier for the combination of organic PEOs and ZnO nanoparticles is an effective strategy for enhanced, clay-based, organic-inorganic hybrid antibacterial nanocomposites.

Synergistic Effect of Glycyrrhizic Acid and ZnO/Palygorskite on Improving Chitosan-Based Films and Their Potential Application in Wound Healing

The synergistic effect of chitosan (CS), glycyrrhizic acid (GA) and ZnO/palygorskite (ZnO/PAL) as potential wound dressing was evaluated in the form of films by the solution casting method. The nanocomposite films were well-characterized with ATR-FTIR, XRD and SEM to explore the interactions between CS, GA and ZnO/PAL. Physical, mechanical and antibacterial properties of the nanocomposite films were systematically investigated for their reliability in end-up utilization. Importantly, it was found that the presence of PAL in the films provided enhanced mechanical properties, whereas CS, GA and ZnO supplied a broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, especially for drug-resistant bacteria such as ESBL-E. coli and MRSA. Overall, this research demonstrated that the prepared films can be a promising candidate for wound-care materials.

Multifunctional palygorskite@ZnO nanorods enhance simultaneously mechanical strength and antibacterial properties of chitosan-based film

A general and effective strategy was developed for improving simultaneously the mechanical strength and antibacterial performance of biopolymer-based films. The well-dispersed zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles were in-situ loaded on non-toxic natural palygorskite (PAL) nanorod to form an antibacterial PAL@ZnO composite nanorod, which can be embedded into chitosan/gelatin (CS/GL) film to produce the composite films with noticeably enhanced mechanical properties and antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli bacteria (inhibition zones are 21.82 ± 0.95 mm and 16.36 ± 1.64 mm, respectively). The toughness of films enhances to 35.13 ± 0.95 MPa and the moisture uptake decreases to 23.74 ± 0.02% after embedding 3% and 9% of PAL@ZnO, respectively. In addition, incorporating PAL@ZnO nanorods also significantly enhanced the water resistance, and thermal stability of film. This work provides an alternative way for the development of antibacterial films with potential applications in many fields such as food packing.

Improved antibacterial activity of hemp fibre by covalent grafting of quaternary ammonium groups

In this study, a novel antibacterial hemp fibre grafted with quaternary ammonium groups (HF-GTA), were prepared by alkalization, oxidation, amination and quaternization multistage reactions. The chemical structure and micromorphology of the fibre were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray diffraction. The grafting and reaction mechanism proved to be successful, which indicated that the grafting reaction primarily occurred on the hydroxyl group of cellulose and hemicellulose in the hemp fibre, where it retained good fibrous morphology, thermal stability and hygroscopicity. HF-GTA exhibited the best antibacterial activity, where the antibacterial ratios against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were 95.41% and 99.64%, respectively. Even after washing 30 times, the antibacterial activity was retained at 89.78% and 91.12%, indicating that HF-GTA was endowed with good washing resistance. The antibacterial activity was owing to the electrostatic reaction reducing the electrochemical potential on the cell membrane, leading to the release of cytoplasmic substances and the dissolution of cells. This study is significantly important for guaranteeing textile quality and preventing disease transmission.

Investigation of Functionalized Surface Charges of Thermoplastic Starch/Zinc Oxide Nanocomposite Films Using Polyaniline: The Potential of Improved Antibacterial Properties

Improving the antibacterial activity of biodegradable materials is crucial for combatting widespread drug-resistant bacteria and plastic pollutants. In this work, we studied polyaniline (PANI)-functionalized zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) to improve surface charges. A PANI-functionalized ZnO NP surface was prepared using a simple impregnation technique. The PANI functionalization of ZnO successfully increased the positive surface charge of the ZnO NPs. In addition, PANI-functionalized ZnO improved mechanical properties and thermal stability. Besides those properties, the water permeability of the bionanocomposite films was decreased due to their increased hydrophobicity. PANI-functionalized ZnO NPs were applied to thermoplastic starch (TPS) films for physical properties and antibacterial studies using Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The PANI-functionalized ZnO bionanocomposite films exhibited excellent antibacterial activity for both E. coli (76%) and S. aureus (72%). This result suggests that PANI-functionalized ZnO NPs can improve the antibacterial activity of TPS-based bionanocomposite films.
