Au/CeO2-SBA-15 catalysts for CO oxidation: Effect of ceria loading on physic-chemical properties and catalytic performances

Gold-Based Catalysts for Complete Formaldehyde Oxidation: Insights into the Role of Support Composition

Formaldehyde (HCHO) is recognized as one of the most emitted indoor air pollutants with high detrimental effect on human health. Significant research efforts are focused on HCHO removal to meet emission regulations in an effective and economically profitable way. For over three decades, the unique electronic properties and catalytic abilities of nano-gold catalysts continue to be an attractive research area for the catalytic community. Recently, we reported that mechanochemical mixing is a relevant approach to the preparation of Co-Ce mixed oxides with high activity in complete benzene oxidation. A trend of higher surface defectiveness, in particular, oxygen vacancies, caused by close interaction between cobalt oxide and cerium oxide phases, was observed for a mixed oxide composition of 70 wt.% Co3O4 and 30 wt.% CeO2. These results directed further improvement by promotion with gold and optimization of mixed oxide composition, aiming for the development of an efficient catalyst for room temperature HCHO abatement. Support modification with potassium was studied; however, the K addition caused less enhancement of HCHO oxidation activity than expected. This motivated the preparation of new carrier material. In addition to Co3O4-CeO2 mixed metal oxides with preset ratio, γ-Al2O3 intentionally containing 33% boehmite and shortly named Al2O3-b was used for synthesis. Analysis of the role of support composition in HCHO oxidation was based on the characterization of nano-gold catalysts by textural measurements, XRD, HRTEM, XPS, and TPR techniques. Gold supported on mechanochemically treated Co3O4-CeO2-Al2O3-b (50 wt.% Al2O3-b) exhibited superior activity owing to high Ce3+ and Co3+ surface amounts and the most abundant oxygen containing species with enhanced mobility. This catalyst achieved oxidation to CO2 and H2O by 95% HCHO conversion at room temperature and 100% at 40 °C, thus implying the potential of this composition in developing efficient catalytic materials for indoor air purification.

Mechanochemically Prepared Co3O4-CeO2 Catalysts for Complete Benzene Oxidation

Considerable efforts to reduce the harmful emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been directed towards the development of highly active and economically viable catalytic materials for complete hydrocarbon oxidation. The present study is focused on the complete benzene oxidation as a probe reaction for VOCs abatement over Co3O4-CeO2 mixed oxides (20, 30, and 40 wt.% of ceria) synthesized by the more sustainable, in terms of less waste, less energy and less hazard, mechanochemical mixing of cerium hydroxide and cobalt hydroxycarbonate precursors. The catalysts were characterized by BET, powder XRD, H2-TPR, UV resonance Raman spectroscopy, and XPS techniques. The mixed oxides exhibited superior catalytic activity in comparison with Co3O4, thus, confirming the promotional role of ceria. The close interaction between Co3O4 and CeO2 phases, induced by mechanochemical treatment, led to strained Co3O4 and CeO2 surface structures. The most significant surface defectiveness was attained for 70 wt.% Co3O4-30 wt.% CeO2. A trend of the highest surface amount of Co3+, Ce3+ and adsorbed oxygen species was evidenced for the sample with this optimal composition. The catalyst exhibited the best performance and 100% benzene conversion was reached at 200 °C (relatively low temperature for noble metal-free oxide catalysts). The catalytic activity at 200 °C was stable without any products of incomplete benzene oxidation. The results showed promising catalytic properties for effective VOCs elimination over low-cost Co3O4-CeO2 mixed oxides synthesized by simple and eco-friendly mechanochemical mixing.

Ceria-Based Catalysts Studied by Near Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy: A Review

The development of better catalysts is a passionate topic at the forefront of modern science, where operando techniques are necessary to identify the nature of the active sites. The surface of a solid catalyst is dynamic and dependent on the reaction environment and, therefore, the catalytic active sites may only be formed under specific reaction conditions and may not be stable either in air or under high vacuum conditions. The identification of the active sites and the understanding of their behaviour are essential information towards a rational catalyst design. One of the most powerful operando techniques for the study of active sites is near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS), which is particularly sensitive to the surface and sub-surface of solids. Here we review the use of NAP-XPS for the study of ceria-based catalysts, widely used in a large number of industrial processes due to their excellent oxygen storage capacity and well-established redox properties.

Complete Benzene Oxidation over Mono and Bimetallic Pd—Au Catalysts on Alumina-Supported Y-Doped Ceria

The protection of environment and human health stimulates intensive research for abatement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the atmosphere. Complete catalytic oxidation is an efficient, environmentally friendly and economically feasible method for elimination of VOCs. This study aims to design high performing and cost-effective catalytic formulations by exploration of appropriate and economically viable supports. Alumina-supported ceria (30 wt.%) and Y2O3 (1 wt.%)-doped ceria were prepared by mechanical mixing and were used as support of mono Au (2 wt.%) and Pd (1 wt.%) and bimetallic Pd-Au catalysts. The characterization by textural measurements, X-ray powder diffraction (PXRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), EPR (electron paramagnetic resonance) and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) was carried out in order to clarify the relationship between catalyst composition, textural, structural and surface properties, reducibility and catalytic performance for complete benzene oxidation. Among all studied catalysts, Pd-based catalysts exhibited the best combustion activity. In particular, monometallic Pd on alumina supported Y-doped ceria attained 100% of complete benzene conversion at 180 °C. These catalytic materials have potential to meet stringent emission regulations in an economical and effective way.

SBA-15 Anchored Metal Containing Catalysts in the Oxidative Desulfurization Process

Recalcitrant sulfur compounds are common impurities in crude oil. During combustion they produce SOx derivatives that are able to affect the atmospheric ozone layer, increasing the formation of acid rains, and reducing the life of the engine due to corrosion. In the last twenty years, many efforts have been devoted to develop conventional hydrodesulfurization (HDS) procedures, as well as alternative methods, such as selective adsorption, bio-desulfurization, oxidative desulfurization (ODS) under extractive conditions (ECODS), and others. Among them, the oxidative procedures have been usually accomplished by the use of toxic stoichiometric oxidants, namely potassium permanganate, sodium bromate and carboxylic and sulfonic peracids. As an alternative, increasing interest is devoted to selective and economical procedures based upon catalytic methods. Heterogeneous catalysis is of relevance in industrial ODS processes, since it reduces the leaching of active species and favors the recovery and reuse of the catalyst for successive transformations. The heterogenization of different types of high-valent metal transition-based organometallic complexes, able to promote the activation of stoichiometric benign oxidants like peroxides, can be achieved using various solid supports. Many successful cases have been frequently associated with the use of mesoporous silicas that have the advantage of easy surface modification by reaction with organosilanes, facilitating the immobilization of homogeneous catalysts. In this manuscript the application of SBA-15 as efficient support for different active metal species, able to promote the catalytic ODS of either model or real fuels is reviewed, highlighting its beneficial properties such as high surface area, narrow pore size distribution and tunable pore diameter dimensions. Related to this topic, the most relevant advances recently published, will be discussed and critically described.

Use and mis-use of x-ray photoemission spectroscopy Ce3d spectra of Ce2O3 and CeO2

X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) work on Ce₂O₃ and CeO₂ oxides has been an active topic of research over the past four decades or so. Such research aimed to find the reasons for the unusual complexity of Ce3d spectra of the two oxides, and it studied catalytic properties of materials that contained them. I discuss how theoretical and experimental studies exploited the diagnostic potential of XPS to reach our current knowledge of the electronic properties of the two oxides. A part of these studies provided peak-fitting guidelines to resolve Ce3d spectra produced by the co-existence of both oxides into the individual spectral components arising from Ce³⁺ and Ce⁴⁺ ions. Basing myself on the analysis of several peak-fittings of Ce3d spectra carried out in studies of the catalytic applications of CeO₂-based materials, I show that more often than not they largely ignore the findings of theoretical, experimental, and methodological XPS work. I discuss typical problems that flaw Ce3d peak-fittings, and how they affect their accuracy. I argue that, although several XPS studies do list primary literature of Ce3d spectra in their bibliography, they often do so for decorative purposes, rather than practical purposes.

CO Oxidation at 20 °C on Au Catalysts Supported on Mesoporous Silica: Effects of Support Structural Properties and Modifiers

In this work we report the effects of support structural properties and its modification with some metal oxides modifiers on the catalytic behavior of Au catalysts in the total CO oxidation at 20 °C. Au catalysts were supported on mesoporous silica materials (MSM) having different structural properties: Channel-like (SBA-15), cage-like (SBA-16), hexagonal (HMS), and disordered (DMS-1) structures. The effect of the modifier was evaluated by comparison of the catalytic response of the SBA-15-based catalysts modified with MgO, Fe₂O₃, TiO₂, and CeO₂. The chemical, structural, and electronic properties of the catalysts were investigated by a variety of techniques (metal content analysis by ICP-OES, N₂ physisorption, XRD, UV-vis DRS, DRIFTS of adsorbed CO and OH regions, oxygen storage capacity (OSC), HR-TEM, and XPS). The activity of calcined catalysts in the CO oxidation reaction were evaluated at steady state conditions, at 20 °C, atmospheric pressure, and when using, as feed, a 1%CO/1%O₂/98% gas mixture. The work clearly demonstrated that all Au catalysts supported on the mesoporous silicas modified with metal oxides were more active than the Au/SBA-15 and Au/MgO reference ones. The support structural properties and type of dopant were important factors influencing on the catalyst behavior. Concerning the support textural properties, it was found that the HMS substrate with the wormhole-structure offers better porosity and specific surface area than their silica counterparts having channel-like (SBA-15), cage-like (SBA-16), and disordered (DMS-1) mesoporous structures. Concerning the effect of modifier, the best catalytic response was achieved with the catalysts modified with MgO. After activation by calcination at 200 °C for 4 h, the Au/MgO/HMS catalyst exhibited the best catalytic performance, which was ascribed to the combined effects of the best structural properties, a large support oxygen storage capacity and homogeneous distribution of gold particles on the support (external and inner). Implications of the type of active sites (Au¹⁺ or Au⁰), support structural properties and role of modifier on the catalytic activity are discussed.

Mesoporous cerium–zirconium oxides modified with gold and copper – synthesis, characterization and performance in selective oxidation of glycerol
