Activity improvement of acid treatment on LaFeO3 catalyst for CO oxidation

Enhancing catalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles through acid treatment in Eosin-Y sensitized photohydrogen evolution reaction system

Light-driven water splitting has gained increasing attention as an eco-friendly method for hydrogen production. There is a pressing need to enhance the performance of catalysts for the commercial viability of this reaction. Many methods have been proposed to improve catalyst performance; however, an economical and straightforward approach remains a priority. This paper presents an uncomplicated technique called acid treatment, which augments the catalytic performance of nanoparticles. The method promotes a change in the catalytic reactivity by causing a deficit in electron density of Ti and O on the surface of TiO2 nanoparticles without altering their size, morphology, or crystal structure. In the Eosin Y sensitized photocatalytic hydrogen production system, nitric acid treated TiO2 (16.95 μmol/g) exhibited 1.5 times the hydrogen production compared to bare TiO2 (11.15 μmol/g).

Study on the mechanism of acid treatment La0.8Sr0.2Mn0.8Cu0.2O3 to improve the catalytic activity of formaldehyde at low temperature

To address the issue of surface enrichment of A-site ions in perovskite and the resulting suppression of catalytic activity, the La0.8Sr0.2Mn0.8Cu0.2O3 was modified by treatment with dilute nitric acid (2 mol/L) and dilute acetic acid (2 mol/L). The results show that the effect of dilute nitric acid treatment on the morphology and catalytic activity of the catalyst is more significant. The specific surface area of the catalyst after dilute nitric acid treatment (268.78 m2/g) is seven times higher than before treatment (37.55 m2/g). The low-temperature catalytic oxidation activity of HCHO of the catalyst after dilute nitric acid treatment is significantly improved, achieving a 50% HCHO oxidation efficiency at 80 °C, while the original sample requires 127 °C to achieve a 50% HCHO conversion. The excellent catalytic activity of the catalyst after dilute nitric acid treatment is related to its large specific surface area, high surface-active site density, and abundant Mn4+ ions. Stability and water resistance experiments show that the catalyst after dilute nitric acid treatment has excellent reaction stability and good water resistance ability. The mechanism of the formaldehyde oxidation reaction is that formaldehyde is first oxidized to a dioxymethylene (DOM) intermediate and DOM dehydrogenation reaction is responsible for the formation of formate species (HCOO-).

Ozone catalytic oxidation of toluene over triple perovskite-type catalysts modified with KMnO4

A unique triple perovskite-type catalyst was successfully synthesized using the simple sol-gel approach, and surface acid modification was added to improve the ozone catalytic oxidation (OZCO) process ability to remove toluene more effectively. Our study indicates that La3MnCuNiO9 catalyst treated with KMnO4 shows the best toluene oxidation activity. At 250 °C, the rates of conversion and mineralization were 100% and 83%, respectively, under thermal catalytic system when C7H8 concentration = 500 ppm. During the OZCO system ([C7H8] = 20 ppm, O3/C7H8=8; room temperature), for 6 h, the conversion rate remained at 100%. The high ratios of Mn4+/(Mn4++Mn3+), Cu2+, and abundant surface oxygen species, high specific surface area, and pore volume lead to remarkable catalytic performance of this catalyst. Meanwhile, the catalyst contributes to superior stability and water resistance. The catalytic mechanism of La3MnCuNiO9 after KMnO4 treatment in the context of OZCO was further discussed. Overall, after KMnO4 treatment, the La3MnCuNiO9 catalyst reveals extraordinary catalytic activity and excellent stability combination of this catalyst with ozone exhibits high toluene removal efficiency in the OZCO system and has a good potential for industrial applications.

Synthesis of α-MnO2-like rod catalyst using YMn2O5 A-site sacrificial strategy for efficient benzene oxidation

The elimination of benzene, a typical volatile organic pollutant, is one of the most challenging topics for environmental scientists. Catalytic oxidation technology is considered the most efficient approach for its elimination. Herein, we report the successful preparation of a novel α-MnO₂-like rod catalyst via an acid etching route and propose YMn₂O₅ mullite as a novel precursor. The optimized α-MnO₂-like rod catalyst showed significantly improved benzene oxidation activity compared to the raw YMn₂O₅ and commercial MnO₂ catalysts, resulting in 100 % benzene conversion at 200 °C at a GHSV of 60,000 mL g^-1 h^-1. Notably, the α-MnO₂-like rod catalyst performance at lower temperatures (100-175 ℃) exceeded that of a commercial Pt/Al₂O₃ catalyst. The excellent catalytic performance of the α-MnO₂-like rod catalyst is associated with its low-temperature reducibility and abundant surface-active oxygen species. During the acid etching process, more Mn³⁺ is oxidized to Mn⁴⁺, and more surface oxygen vacancies are generated on the α-MnO₂-like rod catalyst, which provides more adsorption sites for oxygen molecules to promote the benzene oxidation reaction. The α-MnO₂-like rod catalyst should be a great alternative to commercial noble metal catalysts for the elimination of volatile organic pollutants, especially at lower temperatures.
