The chemistry of tri- and high-nuclearity palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes

Ultralow Thermal Conductivity of a Chalcogenide System Pt3Bi4Q9 (Q = S, Se) Driven by the Hierarchy of Rigid [Pt6Q12]12- Clusters Embedded in Soft Bi-Q Sublattice

Knowledge of structure-property relationships in solids with intrinsic low thermal conductivity is crucial for fields such as thermoelectrics, thermal barrier coatings, and refractories. Herein, we propose a new "rigidness in softness" structural scheme for intrinsic low lattice thermal conductivity (κL), which embeds rigid clusters into the soft matrix to induce large lattice anharmonicity, and accordingly discover a new series of chalcogenides Pt3Bi4Q9 (Q = S, Se). Pt3Bi4S9-xSex (x = 3, 6) achieved an intrinsic ultralow κL down to 0.39 W/(m K) at 773 K, which is considerably low among the Bi chalcogenide thermoelectric materials. Pt3Bi4Q9 contains the rigid cubic [Pt6Q12]12- clusters embedded in the soft Bi-Q sublattice, involving multiple bonding interactions and vibration hierarchy. The hierarchical structure yields a large lattice anharmonicity with high Grüneisen parameters (γ) 1.97 of Pt3Bi4Q9, as verified by the effective scatter of low-lying optical phonons toward heat-carrying acoustic phonons. Consequently, the rigid-soft coupling significantly inhibits heat propagation, exhibiting low acoustic phonon frequencies (∼25 cm-1) and Debye temperatures (ΘD = 170.4 K) in Pt3Bi4Se9. Owing to the suppressed κL and considerable power factor (PF), the ZT value of Pt3Bi4S6Se3 can reach 0.56 at 773 K without heavy carrier doping, which is competitive among the pristine Bi chalcogenides. Theoretical calculations predicted a large potential for performance improvement via proper doping, indicating the great potential of this structure type for promising thermoelectric materials.

Hexagonal crystalline Magnus' green salt analogues prepared from hydroxy-functionalised Pt and Pd complexes

New Magnus' green salt (MGS) analogues, [M(dabdOH)2][MCl4]·2H2O (dabdOH = (2S,3S)-2,3-diaminobutane-1,4-diol; M = Pd (1) and M = Pt(2)), in which [M(dabdOH)2]2+ and [MCl4]2- are stacked alternately to form linear chains, were obtained as hexagonal plate crystals. The hexagonal shape and large crystal size are unprecedented features as MGS analogues. An unusual trigonal grade separation of chain complexes has been revealed by the structural analysis. 1 and 2 exhibited remarkable yellow and pink colours, respectively, which are derived from weak M⋯M interactions. The dabdOH ligand, which has an additional hydrogen donor group (hydroxy group), produces a multiple-hydrogen-bond network. The combination of intrachain and interchain hydrogen bonds gives a two-dimensional (2D) hydrogen-bond sheet, and each 2D sheet is indirectly connected by hydrogen bonds via lattice water molecules. The OH-functionalised ligand greatly increases the hydrophilicity of the MGS analogues and yields the largest single crystals of all MGS analogues reported so far. The trigonal grade-separated chain structure is likely due to the geometric matching between the periodicity of chains and the short axis width of the chain. This strategy opens up new insight for preparing large crystals of MGS analogues and for constructing trigonal grade-separated nanowires in molecular crystals.

Solvents and Ligands Matter: Structurally Variable Palladium and Nickel Clusters Assembled by Tridentate Selenium- and Tellurium-Containing Schiff Bases

Structurally variable organochalcogen clusters containing palladium(II) and nickel(II) ions were assembled starting from the salicylidene-substituted dichalcogenides (Y-C₆H₄-N═CH-C₆H₄-OH)₂ ({HL^Y}₂, where Y = Se or Te), and palladium or nickel acetate. The tetrameric palladium clusters contain reduced chalcogenolato ligands {Y-C₆H₄-N═CH-C₆H₄-O)}^2- ({L'^Y}^2-, where Y = Se or Te), while the initially formed trimeric nickel clusters contain the intact, coordinated dichalcogenides. The palladium clusters have a general formula of [Pd₄(L'^Y)₄] and represent the first examples of palladium complexes where both a gyrobifastigial and a pseudocubane arrangement of the central Pd₄Y₄ unit could be established with the same ligand, only depending on the solvents used for crystallization. Reduced density gradient (RDG) considerations based on density functional theory calculations suggest that the commonly referred to stabilizing chalcogen-palladium or palladium-palladium interactions for the two geometric arrangements are weak van der Waals contacts resulting from the contact of two nonbinding lone pairs. In the case of the pseudocubane arrangement, a repulsive steric effect, which is indicated by RDG analysis, is clearly supported by the cuplike distortions detected in the solid-state structure of the compound. In contrast to the reactions with palladium acetate, where the dichalcogenides were cleaved, during similar reactions with nickel acetate, the dichalcogenides remained intact and trimeric clusters of the composition [Ni-μ²-κ²-(Ni{κ⁵-L^Y}₂)₂-μ²-(OAc)₂] (Y = Se, Te) were formed. Air oxidation and hydrolysis of [Ni-μ²-κ²-(Ni{κ⁵-L^Te}₂)₂-μ²-(OAc)₂] gave a rare example of a hexanuclear nickel cluster of the composition [Ni₂-κ⁵-(Ni₄-κ⁶-μ⁶-{(L'^Te₂O₃)(L'^TeO₂)₂}₂)-μ²-(H₂O)₂], which is composed of a well-defined framework consisting of tellurinic anhydride and tellurinate units, which proves the comparably higher oxidation sensitivity of the trinickel dichalcogenide complexes. Electron spray ionization mass spectrometry spectra of both the palladium and nickel clusters indicate that they show fluctional behavior with varying nuclearity in solution and can adopt multiple charge states especially because of the noninnocence of the chalcogen-based ligands. The complexes were fully characterized by spectroscopic methods, elemental analyses, and X-ray diffraction.

Nuclearity growth of new PdII complexes induced by the electronic effect of selenium-containing ligands

This work provides a systematic study of how the electronic effect of EDG or EWG in selenium-containing ligands influences the nuclearity of PdII complexes. The solid-state, solution and gas phase behaviors were evaluated for the complexes.

Carbodicarbene: geminal-Bimetallic Coordination in Selective Manner

The reaction of Pd(OAc)₂ with free carbodicarbene (CDC) generates a Pd acetate trinuclear complex 1 via intramolecular C(sp³ )-H bond activation at one of the CDC methyl side arms. The solid structure of 1 reveals the capability of CDC to facilitate a double dative bond with two palladium centers in geminal fashion. This is attributed to the chelating mode of CDC, which can frustrate π-conjugation within the CDC framework. Such effect maybe also amplified by ligand-ligand interaction. The formation of other gem-bimetallic Pd-Pd, Pd-Au, and Ni-Au provides further structural evidence for this proof-of-concept in selective installation. Structural analysis is supported by computational calculations based on state-of-the-art energy decomposition analysis (EDA) in conjunction with natural orbitals for chemical valence (NOCV) method.

Chiral Self-Sorting Effects in the Self-Assembly of Metallosupramolecular Aggregates Comprising Ligands Derived from Tröger's Base

Five ligands with either nitrile or isonitrile metal binding motifs have been synthesized based on the 2,8- or 3,9-disubstituted Tröger's base scaffold, respectively. These ligands self-assemble into dinuclear cyclic metallosupramolecular aggregates upon coordination to [(dppp)Pd(OTf)₂ ] in a highly diastereoselective manner, by heterochiral self-sorting in a chiral self-discriminating manner as shown by ESI mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, and single crystal XRD analysis. This observation is in contrast to earlier studies with ligands derived from Tröger's base that have larger metal binding motifs and bis(nitrile) and bis(isonitrile) ligands based on other rigid dissymmetric cores such as [2.2]paracyclophanes. Thus, the combination of these slim metal binding motifs with the rigid v-shaped 2,8- or 3,9-disubstituted Tröger's base scaffolds seems to be especially well preorganized to ensure high-fidelity social self-sorting behavior.

Influencing the Self-Sorting Behavior of [2.2]Paracyclophane-Based Ligands by Introducing Isostructural Binding Motifs

Two isostructural ligands with either nitrile (Lnit ) or isonitrile (Liso ) moieties directly connected to a [2.2]paracyclophane backbone with pseudo-meta substitution pattern have been synthesized. The ligand itself (Lnit ) or its precursors (Liso ) were resolved by HPLC on a chiral stationary phase and the absolute configuration of the isolated enantiomers was assigned by XRD analysis and/or by comparison of quantum-chemical simulated and experimental electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. Surprisingly, the resulting metallosupramolecular aggregates formed in solution upon coordination of [(dppp)Pd(OTf)2 ] differ in their composition: whereas Lnit forms dinuclear complexes, Liso exclusively forms trinuclear ones. Furthermore, they also differ in their chiral self-sorting behavior as (rac)-Liso undergoes exclusive social self-sorting leading to a heterochiral assembly, whereas (rac)-Liso shows a twofold preference for the formation of homochiral complexes in a narcissistic self-sorting manner as proven by ESI mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy. Interestingly, upon crystallization, these discrete aggregates undergo structural transformation to coordination polymers, as evidenced by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Applications of metal selenium/tellurium compounds in materials science

Metal chalcogenides are technologically important materials. Physical, chemical, electrical and mechanical properties of these materials can be fine-tuned by manipulating their shape, size and composition. Although several methods are employed for their synthesis, single-source molecular precursor route has emerged as a versatile strategy for their synthesis and in controlling shape, size and composition of the material under moderate conditions. This chapter gives a brief coverage on the design and development of single-source molecular precursors which have been employed for the preparation of metal selenide/telluride nanocrystals and for deposition of thin films. The discussion includes synthesis of transition-, main group and f-block metal chalcogenolate and/or chalcogenide clusters as precursors and their conversion into metal chalcogenides in the form of thin films and nanostructures. Precursors for ternary metal chalcogenides are also included.

Chiral self-sorting behaviour of [2.2]paracyclophane-based bis(pyridine) ligands

[2.2]Paracyclophane-based bis(pyridine) ligands form dinuclear complexes upon coordination to palladium(ii) ions, however, with distinct differences concerning their chiral self-sorting ability.

Bi and trinuclear complexes in palladium carboxylate-assisted C-H activation reactions

The role of polynuclear species in C-H activations assisted by palladium carboxylates has not been clear so far. The summary of the key findings covering this issue shows its important role under certain conditions. However, much more effort is necessary for a deeper understanding of the whole issue.

The role of trinuclear species in a palladium acetate/trifluoroacetic acid catalytic system

Reactions catalyzed by palladium(ii) acetate and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) have a clear preactivation phase. However, the structure of real catalytic species remains unclear. We show that the key species are cyclic trinuclear complexes of composition [Pd₃(OAc)_6-x(OTFA)_x] (x = 1-6) formed by a sequential ligand exchange from [Pd₃(OAc)₆]. Furthermore, we prove that the trinuclear palladium backbone of the precatalyst remains preserved during the first phase of the C-H activation reaction of acetanilides. In other words, the reaction pathway including the trinuclear species should be taken into account in discussion about mechanisms of the reactions catalyzed by palladium acetates.

Cationic dinuclear platinum and palladium complexes with bridging hydrogermylene and hydrido ligands

Hydride-abstraction reactions of hydrido(dihydrogermyl) complexes [MH(GeH2Trip)(dcpe)] [M = Pt, Pd, Trip = 9-triptycyl, dcpe = 1,2-bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)ethane] with B(C6F5)3 led to the unexpected formation of new cationic (μ-germyl)(μ-hydrido) dinuclear platinum and palladium complexes, [{M(dcpe)}2(μ-GeHTrip)(μ-H)](+).

Coupling of platinated triguanides with platinum-activated nitriles as a novel strategy for generation of dimetallic systems

One of two Pt(IV)-activated propanenitriles in trans-[PtCl4(EtCN)2] is involved in platinum(IV)-mediated nitrile-imine coupling with the platinum(II)-based metallacycles [PtCl2{NH=C(NR2)N(Ph)C(=NH)N(Ph)C(NR2)=NH}] [R2 = Me2 (1a), C5H10 (1b)] yielding diplatinum products, whose structures depend on molar ratios between the reactants. At a 1 : 1 ratio, the mixed-valence platinum(II)/platinum(IV) species [PtCl4{NH=C(NR2)N(Ph)C{=[(N(Et)C=NH)PtCl2(EtCN)]}N(Ph)C(NR2)=NH}] [R2 = Me2 (2a), (CH2)5 (2b)] were generated, whereas at a 1 : 2 ratio the dinuclear platinum(II)/platinum(II) complexes [PtCl2{NH=C(NR2)N(Ph)C{=[(N(Et)C=NH)PtCl2(EtCN)]}N(Ph)C(NR2)=NH}] [R2 = Me2 (3a), (CH2)5 (3b)] were obtained. In contrast to the nitrile-imine coupling observed for the platinum(IV) dinitrile complex, the reaction between the platinum(II) congener trans-[PtCl2(EtCN)2] and any one of 1a,b gives exclusively the substituted dimetallic platinum(II)/platinum(II) products [PtCl2{NH=C(NR2)N(Ph)C{=[(NH)PtCl2(EtCN)]}N(Ph)C(NR2)=NH}] [R2 = Me2 (6a), (CH2)5 (6b)] featuring platinum-containing guanidine 1 as one of the ligands. Complexes 2a,b, 3a,b, and 6a,b were characterized by elemental analyses (C, H, N), HRESI-MS, IR, (1)H NMR spectroscopy, and DTA/TG. The molecular and crystal structure of 2a·2CDCl3 was additionally studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 2a,b undergo further redox transformation in solutions, and single crystals of [PtCl2{NH=C(NMe2)N(Ph)C{=[(N(Et)C=NH)PtCl2(MeCN)]}N(Ph)C(NMe2)=NH}]·2CH2Cl2 (3'a·2CH2Cl2) were obtained from 2a in a CH2Cl2-MeCN-C2H4Cl2 mixture and studied by X-ray crystallography. The driving forces for the generation of diplatinum products 2 and 3 were elucidated based on a quantum-chemical study.

Palladium(0)-mediated C–H bond activation of N-(naphthyl)salicylaldimine and related ligands: utilization of the resulting organopalladium complexes in catalytic C–C and C–N coupling reactions

Aldimine ligands undergo palladium(0) mediated C–H bond activation to afford cyclopalladated complexes, which efficiently catalyze C–C and C–N coupling.

Trinuclear Pd₃O₂ intermediate in aerobic oxidation catalysis

The activation of O2 is a key step in selective catalytic aerobic oxidation reactions mediated by transition metals. The bridging trinuclear palladium species, [(LPd(II))3(μ(3)-O)2](2+) (L=2,9-dimethylphenanthroline), was identified during the [LPd(OAc)]2(OTf)2-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of 1,2-propanediol. Independent synthesis, structural characterization, and catalytic studies of the trinuclear compound show that it is a product of oxygen activation by reduced palladium species and is a competent intermediate in the catalytic aerobic oxidation of alcohols. The formation and catalytic activity of the trinuclear Pd3O2 species illuminates a multinuclear pathway for aerobic oxidation reactions catalyzed by Pd complexes.

A new structural motif for an enantiomerically pure metallosupramolecular Pd₄L₈ aggregate by anion templating

An enantiomerically pure BINOL-based bis(3-pyridyl) ligand 1 assembles into a homochiral [Pd4(1)8] complex upon coordination to tetravalent Pd(II) ions. The formation of this aggregate is templated by two tetrafluoroborate counterions that are encapsulated in two peripheral cavities. The resulting structure is a new structural motif for this kind of metallosupramolecular assemblies that arranges the palladium ions in a distorted tetrahedral fashion and forces ligand 1 to adopt two different conformations. Both phenomena are unique and cause an overall three-dimensional structure that has another confined, chiral, and hydrophilic central cavity.
