On the design of highly luminescent lanthanide complexes

Triple-Decker Hexaazamacrocyclic Lanthanide(III) Complexes: Structure, Magnetic Properties, and Temperature-Dependent Luminescence

The reaction of fluoride anions with mononuclear rare-earth(III) complexes of the hexaazamacrocycle derived from 2,6-diformylpyridine and ethylenediamine affords trinuclear coordination compounds [Ln3L3(μ2-F)4(NO3)2](NO3)3. The X-ray crystal structures of these complexes show triplex cationic complexes where the three roughly parallel macrocyclic lanthanide(III) units are linked by bis-μ2-F bridges. The detailed analysis of the photophysical properties of the [Eu3L3(μ2-F)4(NO3)2](NO3)3·2H2O and [Tb3L3(μ2-F)4(NO3)2](NO3)3·3H2O complexes reveals different temperature dependence of luminescence intensity and luminescence decay time of the Eu(III) and Tb(III) derivatives. The spectra of mixed species of average composition [Eu1.5Tb1.5L3(μ2-F)4(NO3)2](NO3)3·3H2O are in accordance with the ratiometric luminescent thermometer behavior. Measurements of the direct-current (dc) magnetic susceptibility of the [Dy3L3(μ2-F)4(NO3)2](NO3)3·2H2O complex indicate possible ferromagnetic interactions between the Dy(III) ions. Alternating current (ac) susceptibility measurements of this complex indicate single-molecule magnet behavior in zero dc field with magnetic relaxation dominated by Orbach mechanism and an effective energy barrier Ueff = 12.3 cm-1 (17.7 K) with a pre-exponential relaxation time, τ0 of 7.3 × 10-6 s. A similar reaction of mononuclear macrocyclic complexes with a higher number of fluoride equivalents results in polymeric {[Ln3L3(μ2-F)5](NO3)4}n complexes. The X-ray crystal structure of the Nd(III) derivative of this type shows trinuclear units that are additionally linked by single fluoride bridges to form a linear coordination polymer.

Mechanistic Investigation of Sensitized Europium Luminescence: Excited State Dynamics and Luminescence Lifetime Thermometry

Fluorescent nanothermometers based on thermal-dependent lifetime have a significant advantage in biological imaging owing to their immunity toward scattering, absorption, and autofluorescence. In this study, we present the first example of a water-soluble europium complex ([L1Eu]-) that exhibits high sensitivity (1.2% K-1 at 298 K) based on a temperature-dependent lifetime in the millisecond time range. This complex and its analogues show considerable potential for organelle imaging. The mechanism behind this thermal-sensitive behavior has been extensively investigated using transient absorption spectroscopy and variable temperature time-resolved luminescence methods. A highly efficient ligand sensitization process and a thermally activated back energy transfer process have been demonstrated. This study bridges the gap in small molecule thermometers with lifetimes longer than 1 ms and provides guidance in ligand design for metal coordination complex thermometers.

White Light Emissive Eu(III) Complexes through Ligand Engineering and their Applications in Cool Near Ultraviolet White Light Emitting Diodes and Thermometer

In pursuit of enhancing white light quality for solid-state lighting (SSL) applications, an attempt has been made to design novel imidazo-bipyridyl ligands as an ancillary ligand to obtain multiple emissions (mimic sunlight) in the Eu-complex. By strategically modifying the phenanthroline core with imidazo-bipyridyl incorporation with 1 or 2-Napthyl groups at the C1 position, the excitation spectral line is successfully shifted from Ultraviolet (UV) to near UV/visible spectrum (where the LED emission occurs). The ligands showed greenish blue emission in solid and solution. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were utilized to understand the energy transfer processes from ligand to Eu ion in the Eu complexes. The analysis revealed that the energy transfer is incomplete, primarily attributed to the proximity of triplet state energy levels to the resonance level of Eu(III) ions as reflected in solvatochromism. These complexes exhibit a unique dual emissive behavior (emitting multi-color) including white light across various solvents. These complexes hold great promise as single-component white light-emissive materials, with potential applications in white light-emitting diodes (WLED). The fabricated white LED showed an excellent color rendering index (CRI ~93 %). Beyond lighting, this distinctive property opens avenues for temperature sensing ([Eu(DBM)31-Naph] shows the highest sensitivity of Sr=10.97 %, and [Eu(DBM)32-Naph] shows the highest sensitivity of Sr=5.5 % at 333 K) and vapoluminescent (acid-base on-off-on luminescence) studies. This research pioneers the development of these complexes as potential single-component materials for superior white LEDs, underlining their multifaceted utility in cutting-edge lighting and sensing technologies.

Luminescence "Turn-On" Sensing of Brain Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) - Dilated Cardiomyopathy Biomarker Based on the MoS2 Nanosheet Quenched Terbium Citrate Complex

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), known as myocardial metabolic dysfunction, is recognized as a clinical condition characterized by left ventricular dilation or improper contraction of cardiac muscles in the absence of coronary atherosclerosis and hypertension. It is an independent risk factor for cardiac function caused by a hyperglycemic condition in diabetic patients leading to heart failure (HF), which renders the early diagnosis of DCM highly challenging. Hence, detection of early diagnostic biomarkers in blood serum to identify DCM conditions is quite requisite. Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a well-recognized biomarker for heart failure and reported as an early diagnostic biomarker for DCM. In this work, we developed a terbium citrate based MoS2 nanosheet (NS) coupled immunoprobe for the sensitive detection of BNP. The antibody conjugated Tb-citrate complex exhibits green fluorescence, which is quenched by the introduction of MoS2 NS. On subsequent addition of antigen BNP, the fluorescence is enhanced because of specific antigen-antibody interaction. The probe is selective and sensitive toward BNP in a linear range from 30.76 to 849.85 pg/mL with a low LOD of 3.87 pg/mL. The probe is validated in spiked human serum samples with good recovery percentage.

Gaining Insights into the Interplay between Optical and Magnetic Properties in Photoexcited Coordination Compounds

We describe early and recent advances in the fascinating field of combined magnetic and optical properties of inorganic coordination compounds and in particular of 3d-4f single molecule magnets. We cover various applied techniques which allow for the correlation of results obtained in the frequency and time domain in order to highlight the specific properties of these compounds and the future challenges towards multidimensional spectroscopic tools. An important point is to understand the details of the interplay of magnetic and optical properties through performing time-resolved studies in the presence of external fields especially magnetic ones. This will enable further exploration of this fundamental interactions i. e. the two components of electromagnetic radiation influencing optical properties.

Photoluminescence and magnetic properties of isostructural europium(III), gadolinium(III) and terbium(III) oxamate-based coordination polymers

Developing and investigating advanced multifunctional materials with magnetic properties as candidates for assembling spin qubits for quantum computing is imperative. A new polytopic ligand based on oxamate and aniline was used to promote the synthesis of three neutral homometallic lanthanide-coordinated polymers. New complexes with the formula {Ln(phox)3(DMSO)2(H2O)}n, where Ln = Eu3+ (1), Gd3+ (2), and Tb3+ (3) [phox = N-(phenyl)oxamate and DMSO = dimethylsulfoxide], were synthesized and well characterized by spectroscopic methods as well as X-ray crystallographic analysis. All crystalline structures comprise neutral zigzag chains. The lanthanide ions are linked by three phox ligands, in which two oxygen atoms from two different ligands are responsible for connecting the trivalent lanthanide ions, and one phox ligand completes the coordination sphere in a bis-bidentate mode, together with two DMSO molecules and one water coordination molecule. The coordination sphere of lanthanide ions consisted of spherical capped square antiprism (CSAPR-9) symmetry. The magnetic properties of 1-3 were investigated in the 2-300 K temperature range. The dynamic (ac) magnetic properties of 2 reveal a frequency dependence involving the phonon bottleneck mechanism below 33 K under nonzero applied dc magnetic fields, resulting in an example of a field-induced single-molecule magnet. Solid-state photophysical measurements for Eu3+ (1) and Tb3+ (3) complexes indicate that the N-(phenyl)oxamate ligands are very efficient in sensitizing the lanthanide(III) ions in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Compounds 1 and 3 exhibited an emission in the red and green regions, respectively. Experimental results and theoretical calculations using the Sparkle/RM1 method support a quantum efficiency of ∼72% for 1, suggesting its potential as a candidate for light conversion molecular devices (LCMDs).

Dinuclear enantiopure Ln3+ complexes with (S-) and (R-) 2-phenylbutyrate ligands. Luminescence, CPL and magnetic properties

The reaction of Ln(NO3)2·6H2O (Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Tm and Yb) with the respective enantiopure (R)-(-)-2-phenylbutyric or (S)-(+)-2-phenylbutyric acid (R/S-2-HPhBut) and 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (Bphen) allows the isolation of chiral dinuclear compounds of the formula [Ln2(μ-R/S-2-PhBut)4(R/S-2PhBut)2(Bphen)2] where Ln = Nd3+ (R/S-Nd-a), Sm3+ (R/S-Sm-a), Eu3+ (R/S-Eu-a), Tb3+ (R/S-Tb-a and R/S-Tb-b), Dy3+ (R/S-Dy-a and R/S-Dy-b), Tm3+ (R/S-Tm-b) and Yb3+ (R/S-Yb-b). Single crystal X-ray diffraction was performed for compounds S-Eu-a and S-Tm-b. Powder crystal X-ray diffraction was performed for all complexes. From the crystallographic data two different structural motifs were found which are referred to as structure type a and structure type b. In structure type a, the Ln3+ atoms are bridged through four R or S-2-PhBut ligands with two different kinds of coordination modes whereas in structure type b the two Ln3+ atoms are bridged through four R or S-2-PhBut ligands showing only one kind of coordination mode. For those lanthanide ions exhibiting both structure types, Tb3+ and Dy3+, a difference in the luminescence and magnetism behavior is observed. All compounds (except R/S-Tm-b) exhibit sensitized luminescence, notably the Eu3+ and Tb3+ analogues. Circular Dichroism (CD) and Circular Polarized Luminescence (CPL) in the solid state and in 1 mM dichloromethane (DCM) solutions are reported, leading to improved chiroptical properties for the DCM solutions. The asymmetry factor (glum) in 1 mM DCM is ±0.02 (+ for R-Eu-a) for the magnetically allowed transition 5D0 → 7F1 and ±0.03 (+ for R-Tb-a and R-Tb-b) for the 5D4 → 7F5 transition. Magnetic properties of all compounds were studied and the Dy3+ compound with the structural motif b (R-Dy-b) shows Single Molecular Magnet (SMM) behavior under a 0 T magnetic field. However, R-Dy-a is a field-induced SMM.

Effect of Pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate Ligand on the Luminescence Properties of Heteroligand Samarium and Europium Complexes: Experimental and Theoretical Study

The photophysical properties of two isostructural heteroligand lanthanide complexes of general formula Ln(pdtc)3(phen) (pdtc = pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate anion, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), Ln = Sm3+ (1), Eu3+ (2)) were studied in solid state and dichloromethane (DCM) solution. The two lanthanide complexes were investigated by experimental techniques for structural (single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of 1, powder XRD, TG-DTA) and spectroscopic [electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), infrared (IR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis), photoluminescence (PL)] characterization. DFT/TDDFT/ωB97xD and multireference SA-CASSCF/NEVPT2 calculations with perturbative spin-orbit coupling corrections were applied to construct the Jablonski energy diagrams and to discuss the excited state energy transfer mechanism with competing excited state processes and possible sensitized mechanism of metal-centered emission. The first excited state (S1) involved in the excited state energy transfer L(antenna)-to-Ln was predicted to have interligand (pdtc-to-phen) charge transfer character in contrast to the previously predicted ligand-to-metal charge transfer character. The theoretical consideration showed similar relaxation paths and luminescence quenching channels and appropriate Donor*(phen)-Acceptor*(Ln3+) energy gap for 1 and 2. The experimental measurements in the solid state, however, showed efficient luminescence and good ability to convert UV to visible light only for the Sm(pdtc)3(phen) complex. The minor emission of 2 was explained by partial reduction of Eu3+, confirmed by EPR and calculated electron density distribution data.

Cerium(III) and 5-methylisophthalate-based MOFs with slow relaxation of magnetization and photoluminescence emission

Two novel Ce(III) metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with formulas [Ce(5Meip)(H-5Meip)]nGR-MOF-17 and [CeCl(5Meip)(DMF)]nGR-MOF-18 (5Meip = 5-methylisophthalate, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) have been synthesized, forming 3-dimensional frameworks. Magnetic measurements show that both compounds present field-induced slow magnetic relaxation under a small applied dc field. For GR-MOF-17, the temperature dependence of relaxation times is best described by a Raman mechanism, whereas for GR-MOF-18, relaxation occurs through a combination of Raman and local-mode pathways. Moreover, when avoiding short Ce⋯Ce interactions by magnetic dilution in GR-MOF-17@La and GR-MOF-18@La, only the local-mode mechanism is responsible for magnetic relaxation. Photophysical studies show the occurrence of ligand-centred luminescence in both compounds and phosphorescence emission at low temperature for GR-MOF-17.

Halogen-Bonds-Based Strategy for the Design of Highly Luminescent Lanthanide Coordination Polymers as Taggants for Plastic Waste Sorting

Reactions in water between a lanthanide ion and 3,4,5,6-tetrachloro-phthalate lead to a new series of iso-structural coordination polymers with general chemical formula [Ln2(tcpa)3(H2O)6]∞ with Ln = Eu-Yb plus Y. The crystal structure has been solved on the Y-derivative. This compound crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/n (no. 14) with the following cell parameters: a = 6.2155(2) Å, b = 19.6652(7) Å, c = 30.3720(9) Å, β = 94.631(1)°, V = 3700.22(37) Å3, and Z = 4. Luminescence properties of homo- and heterolanthanide coordination polymers that belong to this structural family have been studied in detail. This study shows that, in this system, intermetallic energy transfers are very efficient and that dilution by an optically non active Gd3+ ion leads to quite efficient luminescent heterolanthanide coordination polymers. The luminescence of these compounds, dispersed at a low doping rate in a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix, can be observed even with the naked eye. This study opens the way to the use of such compounds as taggants for optical sorting of plastic waste and consecutive recycling.

Computational and optoelectronic investigations of red-emissive europium (III) β-diketonate with n-donor ligands for display applications

Europium complexes exhibiting red luminescence were prepared by employing β-diketone as main ligand and 1,10-phenanthroline as an additional ligand. Various methods, including 1H NMR, IR spectroscopy and analysis of optical band gap were employed to examine these complexes. The luminescent photophysical properties were investigated using PL spectroscopy and theoretical calculations were conducted to explore radiative transitions probabilities and Judd-Ofelt (J-O) parameters for transitions of type 5D0 → 7F2, 4. J-O parameters were determined using the JOES computer program and results were in good agreement with the outcomes obtained experimentally. The luminescence analysis results have verified the vibrant, single-color red emission of the prepared complexes. The band gap of ternary europium complexes, determined optically, electronically, and theoretically, falls within the range of 3-4 eV. This similarity indicates that these complexes are potentially suitable as semiconductor materials. The results from absorption, electrochemical and photophysical analyses indicate the potential use of synthesized complexes in lighting and display applications.

Near-Infrared Luminescent Materials Incorporating Rare Earth/Transition Metal Ions: From Materials to Applications

The spotlight has shifted to near-infrared (NIR) luminescent materials emitting beyond 1000 nm, with growing interest due to their unique characteristics. The ability of NIR-II emission (1000-1700 nm) to penetrate deeply and transmit independently positions these NIR luminescent materials for applications in optical-communication devices, bioimaging, and photodetectors. The combination of rare earth metals/transition metals with a variety of matrix materials provides a new platform for creating new chemical and physical properties for materials science and device applications. In this review, the recent advancements in NIR emission activated by rare earth and transition metal ions are summarized and their role in applications spanning bioimaging, sensing, and optoelectronics is illustrated. It started with various synthesis techniques and explored how rare earths/transition metals can be skillfully incorporated into various matrixes, thereby endowing them with unique characteristics. The discussion to strategies of enhancing excitation absorption and emission efficiency, spotlighting innovations like dye sensitization and surface plasmon resonance effects is then extended. Subsequently, a significant focus is placed on functionalization strategies and their applications. Finally, a comprehensive analysis of the challenges and proposed strategies for rare earth/transition metal ion-doped near-infrared luminescent materials, summarizing the insights of each section is provided.

Terpyridyl-Imidazole Based Ligand Coordinated to Ln(Hexafluoroacetyl acetonate)3 Core: Synthesis, Structural Characterization, Luminescence Properties, and Thermosensing Behaviors in Solution and PMMA Film

A new array of ternary lanthanide complexes of the form [Ln(hfa)3(tpy-HImzphen)] have been synthesized and thoroughly characterized wherein Ln = LaIII (1), EuIII (2), SmIII (3), and TbIII (4); hfa = hexafluoroacetylacetonate; and tpy-HImzphen = 2-(4-[2,2':6',2″]terpyridin-4'-yl-phenyl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole. Incorporation of tpy-HImzphen onto the Ln-hfa moiety induced a bathochromic shift of the absorption window of the complexes into the visible region. Extensive investigations of the luminescence characteristics have been conducted both at RT and at 77 K to understand the deactivation pathways of the complexes. Both steady-state and time-resolved emission spectral behaviors indicate four distinctive behaviors upon incorporation of tpy-HImzphen onto the lanthanide core, viz., a huge red-shift of the ligand-centered peak for LaIII; almost complete energy transfer for EuIII; very little energy transfer for SmIII, while reverse energy transfer in the case of TbIII. In addition, the EuIII-complex exhibits its excellence in luminescence thermometry in the solution state as well as in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) thin films. The thermosensitive luminescence response in solution was further utilized to mimic set-reset flip-flop logic operation. A plausible energy transfer scheme has been devised to explain dissimilar luminescence behaviors in the complexes. The role of LMCT was also considered for the observed thermosensing property of the Eu(III) complex.

Luminescent Supramolecular Metallogels: Drug Loading and Eu(III) as Structural Probe

Supramolecular metallogels combine the rheological properties of gels with the color, magnetism, and other properties of metal ions. Lanthanide ions such as Eu(III) can be valuable components of metallogels due to their fascinating luminescence. In this work, we combine Eu(III) and iminodiacetic acid (IDA) into luminescent hydrogels. We investigate the tailoring of the rheological properties of these gels by changes in their metal:ligand ratio. Further, we use the highly sensitive Eu(III) luminescence to obtain information about the chemical structure of the materials. In special, we take advantage of computational calculations to employ an indirect method for structural elucidation, in which the simulated luminescent properties of candidate structures are matched to the experimental data. With this strategy, we can propose molecular structures for different EuIDA gels. We also explore the usage of these gels for the loading of bioactive molecules such as OXA, observing that its aldose reductase activity remains present in the gel. We envision that the findings from this work could inspire the development of luminescent hydrogels with tunable rheology for applications such as 3D printing and imaging-guided drug delivery platforms. Finally, Eu(III) emission-based structural elucidation could be a powerful tool in the characterization of advanced materials.

Guest-Responsive Near-Infrared-Luminescent Metal-Organic Cage Organized by Porphyrin Dyes and Yb(III) Complexes

Metal-organic cages (MOCs) with luminophores have significant advantages for the facile detection of specific molecules based on turn-on or turn-off luminescence changes induced by host-guest complexation. One important challenge is the development of turn-on-type near-infrared (NIR)-luminescent MOCs. In this study, we synthesized a novel MOC consisting of two porphyrin dyes linked by four Yb(III) complexes, which exhibit bimodal red and NIR fluorescence signals upon photoexcitation of the porphyrin π system. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis and computational molecular modeling revealed that planar aromatic perfluorocarbons were intercalated into the MOC. The tight packing between the MOC and guests enhanced the NIR fluorescence of Yb(III) by suppressing energy transfer from the photoexcited porphyrin to oxygen molecules. Guest-responsive turn-on NIR fluorescence changes in an MOC were successfully demonstrated.

Investigation of Ln3+ complexation by a DOTA derivative substituted by an imidazothiadiazole: synthesis, solution structure, luminescence and relaxation properties

We investigated the coordination properties of original macrocyclic Ln3+ complexes comprising an imidazothiadiazole heterocycle. The thermodynamic stability of the Gd3+ complex was determined by a combination of potentiometric and photophysical measurements. The kinetic inertness was assessed in highly acidic media. The solution structure of the Ln3+ complex was unambiguously determined by a set of photophysical measurements and 1H, 13C, 89Y NMR data in combination with DFT calculations, which proved coordination of the heterocycle to Ln3+. The ability of the imidazothiadiazole moiety to sensitize Tb3+ luminescence was investigated. Finally, the relaxation properties were investigated by recording 1H nuclear magnetic relaxation dispersion (NMRD) profiles and 17O measurements. The water exchange rate is similar to that of GdDOTA as the less negative charge of the ligand is compensated for by the presence of a bulky heterocycle. Relaxivity is constant over a large range of pH values, demonstrating the favorable properties of the complex for imaging purposes.

Effective photosensitized emission of a Tb(III) complex using a β-diketonate photosensitizer and an oxygen barrier system in a thermally populated triplet state

Photosensitizer design of luminescent terbium (Tb(III)) complexes with narrow bandwidths is important for advancing luminescent materials. In this study, we report an effective photosensitizer model in a thermally populated lowest excited triplet (T1) state during Tb(III) emission. The Tb(III) complex comprises a Tb(III) ion (serving as an emission center), hexafluoroacetylacetonates (acting as photosensitizer ligands), and bulky cyclohexyl group-attached phosphine-oxide-type ligands (functioning as an oxygen barrier system). Emission properties including emission and excitation spectra, ligand-excited emission quantum yields, and emission lifetimes were evaluated in the absence and presence of oxygen. Coordination geometry structures were determined through analysing single-crystal structures. The electronic structure based on 4f-orbitals was estimated from radiative rate constants and quantum chemical calculations. The bulky phosphine oxide ligand not only provides an oxygen barrier system but also induces an electronic structural modulation based on 4f-orbitals, allowing for effective photosensitized Tb(III) emission in a thermally populated ligand T1 state in air.

Excitation wavelength-dependent lanthanide-disalicylaldehyde coordination hybrid capable of distinguishing D2O from H2O

The increasing demands in fields of anti-counterfeiting, fluorescence analysis, clinical therapy and LED illumination are urgently eager for more excellent optically switchable luminescent materials with the stable and multimodal fluorescence in single-component matrix. Herein, the lanthanide-disalicylaldehyde coordination hybrid H2Qj4/TbxEuy is proposed as an efficient luminescent matrix to connect terbium sensibilization with ESIPT (excited-state intramolecular proton transfer) effects, and three multi-emission hybrids are finally designed and synthesized by regulating Tb3+ and Eu3+ ratios. Surprisingly, the H2Qj4/Tb0.91Eu0.09 shows the excitation wavelength-dependent luminescence in solution which originates from two energy transfer ways of terbium sensibilization effect. It exhibits green and red lights under the 369 and 394 nm UV lamp, respectively. Three hybrids are further used as lab-on-a-molecule fluorescent probes to perform multianalyte detection for various solvents by selected fluorescent sensing channels. By means of PCA (principal component analysis) and HCA (hierarchical cluster analysis), all of them can successfully detect and discriminate17 common solvents, especially the H2O and D2O. Moreover, the H2Qj4/Tb0.91Eu0.09 also shows the wide linear responses of H2O content in D2O, discrimination of two-component solvent mixtures, hygroscopicity evaluation of D2O and information encryption which will advance the progress of multimodal luminescent materials and multianalyte chemosensors.

Luminescent Ln3+-based silsesquioxanes with a β-diketonate antenna ligand: toward the design of efficient temperature sensors

We report the synthesis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, and luminescence measurements of a novel family of luminescent cage-like tetranuclear silsesquioxanes (PhSiO1.5)8(LnO1.5)4(O)(C5H8O2)6(EtOH)2(CH3CN)2⋅2CH3CN (where Ln = Tb, 1; Tb/Eu, 2; and Gd, 3), featuring seven-coordinated lanthanide ions arranged in a one-capped trigonal prism geometry. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit characteristic Tb3+ and Tb3+/Eu3+-related emissions, respectively, sensitized by the chelating antenna acetylacetonate (acac) ligands upon excitation in the UV and visible spectral regions. Compound 3 is used to assess the energies of the triplet states of the acac ligand. For compound 1, theoretical calculations on the intramolecular energy transfer and multiphonon rates indicate a thermal balance between the 5D4 Stark components, while the mixed Tb3+/Eu3+ analog 2, with a Tb:Eu ratio of 3:1, showcases intra-cluster Tb3+-to-Eu3+ energy transfer, calculated theoretically as a function of temperature. By utilizing the intensity ratio between the 5D4→7F5 (Tb3+) and 5D0→7F2 (Eu3+) transitions in the range 11-373 K, we demonstrate the realization of a ratiometric luminescent thermometer with compound 2, operating in the range 11-373 K with a maximum relative sensitivity of 2.0% K-1 at 373 K. These findings highlight the potential of cage-like silsesquioxanes as versatile materials for optical sensing-enabled applications.

Luminescent Er3+ based single molecule magnets with fluorinated alkoxide or aryloxide ligands

We report the synthesis, structures, and magnetic and luminescence properties of a series of new mono- and dinuclear Er3+ complexes derived from sterically demanding aryloxide and fluorinated alkoxide ligands: [4-tBu-2,6-(Ph2CH)2C6H2O]3Er(THF) (1), [(C6F5)3CO]3Er(Me3SiOH) (2), [(C6F5)3CO]3Er[(Me3Si)2NH] (3), [(C6F5)3CO]3Er(C6H5CH3) (4), [(C6F5)3CO]3Er(o-Me2NC6H4CH3) (5) and {[Ph(CF3)2CO]2Er(μ2-OC(CF3)2Ph)}2 (6). In compounds 1, 2, and 4, the Er3+ ion is four-coordinated and adopts a distorted trigonal pyramidal geometry, while in 3, 5, and 6, the coordination geometry of Er3+ is impacted by the presence of several relatively short Er⋯F distances, making them rather 6-coordinated. All compounds behave as field-induced Single Molecule Magnets (SMMs) and exhibit an Er3+ characteristic near infrared (NIR) emission associated with the 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 transition with a remarkably long lifetime going up to 73 μs, which makes them multifunctional luminescent SMMs. The deconvolution of the NIR emission spectra allowed us to provide a direct probe of the crystal field splitting in these compounds, which was correlated with magnetic data.

2D Ionic Liquid-Like State of Charged Rare-Earth Clusters on a Metal Surface

Rare-earth complexes are vital for separation chemistry and useful in many advanced applications including emission and energy upconversion. Here, 2D rare-earth clusters having net charges are formed on a metal surface, enabling investigations of their structural and electronic properties on a one-cluster-at-a-time basis using scanning tunneling microscopy. While these ionic complexes are highly mobile on the surface at ≈100 K, their mobility is greatly reduced at 5 K and reveals stable and self-limiting clusters. In each cluster, a pair of charged rare-earth complexes formed by electrostatic and dispersive interactions act as a basic unit, and the clusters are chiral. Unlike other non-ionic molecular clusters formed on the surfaces, these rare-earth clusters show mechanical stability. Moreover, their high mobility on the surface suggests that they are in a 2D liquid-like state.

Lanthanide Complex for Single-Molecule Fluorescent in Situ Hybridization and Background-Free Imaging

Traditional single-molecule fluorescence in situ hybridization (smFISH) methods for RNA detection often face sensitivity challenges due to the low fluorescence intensity of the probe. Also, short-lived autofluorescence complicates obtaining clear signals from tissue sections. In response, we have developed an smFISH probe using highly grafted lanthanide complexes to address both concentration quenching and autofluorescence background. Our approach involves an oligo PCR incorporating azide-dUTP, enabling conjugation with lanthanide complexes. This method has proven to be stable, convenient, and cost-effective. Notably, for the mRNA detection in SKBR3 cells, the lanthanide probe group exhibited 2.5 times higher luminescence intensity and detected 3 times more signal points in cells compared with the Cy3 group. Furthermore, we successfully applied the probe to image HER2 mRNA molecules in breast cancer FFPE tissue sections, achieving a 2.7-fold improvement in sensitivity compared to Cy3-based probes. These results emphasize the potential of time-resolved smFISH as a highly sensitive method for nucleic acid detection, free of background fluorescence interference.

A combined experimental-molecular modeling study of crown ether europium complexes: Effects of the coordinated anion on structural and luminescence properties

It is reported the synthesis, characterization by elemental analysis, thermogravimetry; electronic absorption, infrared, excitation, and emission spectroscopies of the [Eu(12C4)(phen)2(X)n]X2 complexes, where 12C4 = 12-crown-4, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, and X  = F-, Cl-, Br-, SCN-, ClO4-, and NO3-. It is verified that the polarizability of the anion X- exerts remarkable effects on the emission process. As a general trend, lower wavenumbers for the 7F0→5L6, 7F0→5D2 and 7F0→5D1 transitions are associated with the anions with higher volumes and, consequently, higher polarizability. The molecular modeling results performed with quantum methods (RHF and DFT) suggest some relationships between the calculated structures, electronic, and luminescence properties with the presence of the LMCT (ligand-to-metal charge transfer) states, which explains the differences in the emission spectra of these complexes due to the coordinated anion.

Ab initio investigations of circularly polarised luminescence in Samarium(III)-based complexes

The present study aims to gain insight into the circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) of lanthanide complexes through the angle of one of their elements, namely Samarium. The simulation of luminescent properties of Samarium(III) complexes remains a challenge for computational chemistry, considering the multiconfigurational character of the electronic structure, the importance of the spin-orbit coupling and the fact that its emissive level is high in energy and preceded by numerous states of various multiplicity. Herein, a methodology based on CASSCF/RASSI-SO calculations is exposed and applied to simulate the CPL properties of two different Samarium(III) complexes, presenting either a rigid or a flexible architecture around the centre ion.

Luminescent lanthanide-based molecular materials: applications in photodynamic therapy

Luminescent lanthanide molecular compounds have recently attracted attention as potential photosensitizers (PSs) for photodynamic therapy (PDT) against malignant cancer tumours because of their predictable systemic toxicity, temporospatial specificity, and minimal invasiveness. A photosensitizer exhibits no toxicity by itself, but in the presence of light and oxygen molecules, it can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) to cause damage to proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, membranes, and organelles, which can induce cell apoptosis. This review focuses on the latest developments in luminescent lanthanide-based molecular materials as photosensitizers and their applications in photodynamic therapy. These molecular materials include lanthanide coordination complexes, nanoscale lanthanide coordination polymers, and lanthanide-based nanoscale metal-organic frameworks. In the end, the future challenges in the development of robust luminescent lanthanide molecular materials-based photosensitisers are outlined and emphasized to inspire the design of a new generation of phototheranostic agents.

Lanthanide-Complex-Enhanced Bioorthogonal Branched DNA Amplification

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is a widely used technique for detecting intracellular nucleic acids. However, its effectiveness in detecting low-copy nucleic acids is limited due to its low fluorescence intensity and background autofluorescence. To address these challenges, we present here an approach of lanthanide-complex-enhanced bioorthogonal-branched DNA amplification (LEBODA) with high sensitivity for in situ nuclear acid detection in single cells. The approach capitalizes on two levels of signal amplification. First, it utilizes click chemistry to directly link a substantial number of bridge probes to target-recognizing probes, providing an initial boost in signal intensity. Second, it incorporates high-density lanthanide complexes into each bridge probe, enabling secondary amplifications. Compared to the traditional "double Z" probes used in the RNAscope method, LEBODA exhibits 4 times the single enhancement for RNA detection signal with the click chemistry approach. Using SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus-infected HeLa cells, we demonstrate the superiority in the detection of viral-infected cells in rare populations as low as 20% infectious rate. More encouragingly, the LEBODA approach can be adapted for DNA-FISH and single-molecule RNA-FISH, as well as other hybridization-based signal amplification methods. This adaptability broadens the potential applications of LEBODA in the sensitive detection of biomolecules, indicating promising prospects for future research and practical use.

Structure-changeable luminescent Eu(III) complex as a human cancer grade probing system for brain tumor diagnosis

Accurate determination of human tumor malignancy is important for choosing efficient and safe therapies. Bioimaging technologies based on luminescent molecules are widely used to localize and distinguish active tumor cells. Here, we report a human cancer grade probing system (GPS) using a water-soluble and structure-changeable Eu(III) complex for the continuous detection of early human brain tumors of different malignancy grades. Time-dependent emission spectra of the Eu(III) complexes in various types of tumor cells were recorded. The radiative rate constants (kr), which depend on the geometry of the Eu(III) complex, were calculated from the emission spectra. The tendency of the kr values to vary depended on the tumor cells at different malignancy grades. Between T = 0 and T = 3 h of invasion, the kr values exhibited an increase of 4% in NHA/TS (benign grade II gliomas), 7% in NHA/TSR (malignant grade III gliomas), and 27% in NHA/TSRA (malignant grade IV gliomas). Tumor cells with high-grade malignancy exhibited a rapid upward trend in kr values. The cancer GPS employs Eu(III) emissions to provide a new diagnostic method for determining human brain tumor malignancy.

Three derivatives of phenacyldiphenylphosphine oxide: influence of aromatic and alkyl substituents on the luminescence sensitization of four Ln(NO3)3 salts

A series of four β-carbonylphosphine oxide compounds have been synthesized, and their complexes with the nitrate salts of Sm3+, Eu3+, Tb3+ and Dy3+ have been characterized in solution and in the solid state. Analysis of the complexes using IR and NMR suggests that metal-ligand binding occurs mainly through the phosphine oxide group of the ligand, with some involvement of the carbonyl group. All 16 complexes luminesce in solutions of acetonitrile, albeit with varying degrees of intensity. The highest quantum yield values obtained for this series are those where the ligand contains an aryl carbonyl group paired with an electron rich phosphine oxide group (29.8 and 11% for the Tb3+ and Eu3+ complexes, respectively). In contrast, the longest emission lifetime values were found for complexes where the ligand contains a bulky substituent on the carbonyl group paired with an electron rich phosphine oxide (1.86, 1.402, 0.045 ms for the Tb3+, Eu3+ and Sm3+ complexes, respectively).

Enhancing the Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Europium Coordination Polymers by Doping a Chromophore Ligand into Superhelices

Lanthanide-based molecular materials showing efficient circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) activity with a high quantum yield are attractive due to their potential applications in data storage, optical sensors, and 3D displays. Herein we present an innovative method to achieve enhanced CPL activity and a high quantum yield by doping a chromophore ligand into a coordination polymer superhelix. A series of homochiral europium(III) phosphonates with a helical morphology were prepared with the molecular formula S-, R-[Eu(cyampH)3-3n(nempH)3n]·3H2O (S/R-Eu-n, n = 0-5%). The doping of chromophore ligand S- or R-nempH2 into superhelices of S/R-Eu-0% not only turned on the CPL activity with the dissymmetry factor |glum| on the order of 10-3 but also increased the quantum yield by about 14-fold. This work may shed light on the development of efficient CPL-active lanthanide-based coordination polymers for applications.

Novel stable ytterbium acetylacetonate-quinaldinate complexes as single-molecule magnets and surprisingly efficient luminophores

The first Yb complexes comprising a quinoline-2-carboxylate (quinaldinate, Q-) ligand, namely 1D-polymeric [Yb(acac)2(Q)]n (1, acac- is the acetylacetonate (pentane-2,4-dionate) anion) and mononuclear [Yb(acac)2(Q)(Phen)] (2, Phen is 1,10-phenanthroline), are reported. The bifunctionality of both complexes as field-induced single-molecule magnets (SMMs) and near IR luminophores has been revealed. The SMM properties of 1 and 2 have been discussed in terms of the geometry and composition of the coordination environment. Also, 1 is the first example of 1D-polymeric SMMs with the capped octahedral surrounding of Yb3+. The photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of 1 and 2 are 2 and 4%, respectively. The origins of this difference are discussed. Surprisingly, the PLQY value of 2 is high for compounds comprising a lot of C-H vibrational quenchers, being the highest one for reliably characterized Yb β-diketonate complexes, and surpassing those for complexes with a broad range of anionic ligands. In this respect, the role of the Phen ligand is to tune the coordination mode of Q- thereby decreasing the energy of coordinating C-O oscillators rather than to act as a typical antenna ligand. These results can give rise to an alternative route to elaborate efficient Yb-based luminophores via the substitution of the β-diketonate ligands controlled by the introduction of appropriate neutral ligands.

Tuning the Emission of Homometallic DyIII, TbIII, and EuIII 1-D Coordination Polymers with 2,6-Di(1H-1,2,4-triazole-1-yl-methyl)-4-R-phenoxo Ligands: Sensitization through the Singlet State

This work reports the structural characterization and photophysical properties of DyIII, TbIII, and EuIII coordination polymers with two phenoxo-triazole-based ligands [2,6-di(1H-1,2,4-triazole-1-yl-methyl)-4-R-phenoxo, LRTr (R = CH3; Cl)]. These ligands permitted us to obtain isostructural polymers, described as a 1D double chain, with LnIII being nona-coordinated. The energies of the ligand triplet (T1) states were estimated using low-temperature time-resolved emission spectra of YIII analogues. Compounds with LClTr present higher emission intensity than those with LMeTr. The emission of TbIII compounds was not affected by the different excitation wavelengths used and was emitted in the pure green region. In contrast, DyLMeTr emits in the blue-to-white region, while the luminescence of DyLClTr remains in the white region for all excitation wavelengths. On the other hand, EuIII compounds emit in the blue (ligand) or red region (EuIII) depending on the substituent of the phenoxo moiety and excitation wavelength. Theoretical calculations were employed to determine the excited states of the ligands by using time-dependent density functional theory. These calculations aided in modeling the intramolecular energy transfer and rationalizing the optical properties and demonstrated that the sensitization of the LnIII ions is driven via S1 → LnIII, a process that is less common as compared to T1 → LnIII.

Targeted, Molecular Europium(III) Probes Enable Luminescence-Guided Surgery and 1 Photon Post-Surgical Luminescence Microscopy of Solid Tumors

Discrete luminescent lanthanide complexes represent a potential alternative to organic chromophores due to their tunability of optical properties, insensitivity to photobleaching, and large pseudo-Stokes shifts. Previously, we demonstrated that the lack of depth penetration of UV excitation required to sensitize discrete terbium and europium complexes can be overcome using Cherenkov radiation emitted by clinically employed radioisotopes in situ. Here, we show that the second-generation europium complexes [Eu(III)(pcta-PEPA2)] and [Eu(III)(tacn-pic-PEPA2)] (Φ = 57% and 76%, respectively) lower the limit of detection (LoD) to 1 nmol in the presence of 10 μCi of Cherenkov emitting isotopes, 18F and 68Ga. Bifunctionalization provides access to cysteine-linked peptide conjugates with comparable brightness and LoD. The conjugate, [Eu(tacn-(pic-PSMA)-PEPA2)], displays high binding affinity to prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-expressing PC-3 prostate cancer cells in vitro and can be visualized in the membrane-bound state using confocal microscopy. Biodistribution studies with the [86Y][Y(III)(tacn-(pic-PSMA)-PEPA2)] analogue in a mouse xenograft model were employed to study pharmacokinetics. Systemic administration of the targeted Cherenkov emitter, [68Ga][Ga(III)(PSMA-617)], followed by intratumoral injection or topical application of 20 or 10 nmol [Eu(III)(tacn-(pic-PSMA)-PEPA2)], respectively, in live mice resulted in statistically significant signal enhancement using conventional small animal imaging (620 nm bandpass filter). Optical imaging informed successful tumor resection. Ex vivo imaging of the fixed tumor tissue with 1 and 2 photon excitation further reveals the accumulation of the administered Eu(III) complex in target tissues. This work represents a significant step toward the application of luminescent lanthanide complexes for optical imaging in a clinical setting.

Magneto-Chiral Dichroism in a One-Dimensional Assembly of Helical Dysprosium(III) Single-Molecule Magnets

Here we report magneto-chiral dichroism (MChD) detected through visible and near-infrared light absorption of a chiral dysprosium(III) coordination polymer. The two enantiomers of [DyIII(H6(py)2)(hfac)3]n [H6(py)2 = 2,15-bis(4-pyridyl)ethynylcarbo[6]helicene; hfac- = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate], where the chirality is provided by a functionalized helicene ligand, were structurally, spectroscopically, and magnetically investigated. Magnetic measurements reveal a slow relaxation of the magnetization, with differences between enantiopure and racemic systems rationalized on the basis of theoretical calculations. When the enantiopure complexes are irradiated with unpolarized light in a magnetic field, they exhibit multiple MChD signals associated with the f-f electronic transitions of DyIII, thus providing the coexistence of MChD-active absorptions and single-molecule-magnet (SMM) behavior. These findings clearly show the potential that rationally designed chiral SMMs have in enabling the optical readout of magnetic memory through MChD.

Excited-Multimer Mediated Supramolecular Upconversion on Multicomponent Lanthanide-Organic Assemblies

Upconversion (UC) is a fascinating anti-Stokes-like optical process with promising applications in diverse fields. However, known UC mechanisms are mainly based on direct energy transfer between metal ions, which constrains the designability and tunability of the structures and properties. Here, we synthesize two types of Ln8L12-type (Ln for lanthanide ion; L for organic ligand L1 or L2R/S) lanthanide-organic complexes with assembly induced excited-multimer states. The Yb8(L2R/S)12 assembly exhibits upconverted multimer green fluorescence under 980 nm excitation through a cooperative sensitization process. Furthermore, upconverted red emission from Eu3+ on the heterometallic (Yb/Eu)8L12 assemblies is also realized via excited-multimer mediated energy relay. Our findings demonstrate a new strategy for designing UC materials, which is crucial for exploiting photofunctions of multicomponent lanthanide-organic complexes.

Donor Radii in Rare-Earth Complexes

We present a set of donor radii for the rare-earth cations obtained from the analysis of structural data available in the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). Theoretical calculations using density functional theory (DFT) and wave function approaches (NEVPT2) demonstrate that the Ln-donor distances can be broken down into contributions of the cation and the donor atom, with the minimum in electron density (ρ) that defines the position of (3,-1) critical points corresponding well with Shannon's crystal radii (CR). Subsequent linear fits of the experimental bond distances for all rare earth cations (except Pm3+) afforded donor radii (rD) that allow for the prediction of Ln-donor distances regardless of the nature of the rare-earth cation and its oxidation state. This set of donor radii can be used to rationalize structural data and identify particularly weak or strong interactions, which has important implications in the understanding of the stability and reactivity of complexes of these metal ions. A few cases of incorrect atom assignments in X-ray structures were also identified using the derived rD values.

Chiral lanthanide-silver(I) cluster-based metal-organic frameworks exhibiting solvent stability, and tunable photoluminescence

Due to the lack of effective synthetic strategies, the preparation of chemically stable chiral Ag(I) cluster-based materials for assembly remains challenging. Here, we have developed an approach to synthesize three pairs of chiral Ln-Ag(I) cluster-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) named l-LnAg5-3D (Ln = Gd for 1-L, Eu for 2-L, and Tb for 3-L) and d-LnAg5-3D (Ln = Gd for 1-D, Eu for 2-D, and Tb for 3-D) by employing a chiral Ag(I) cluster ({Ag5S6}) as the node and Ln3+ ion as the inorganic linker. Structural analysis revealed that the chiral ligands induced chirality through the entire structure, resulting in a chiral helix arrangement of the C3-symmetric chiral {Ag5S6} nodes and Ln3+ ions. These compounds showed high solvent stability in various polar organic solvents. The solid-state circular dichroism (CD) spectra of compounds l-LnAg5-3D and d-LnAg5-3D exhibited obvious mirror symmetrical peaks. The emission spectra in the solid state revealed that compound 1-L only exhibited the emission peak of {Ag5S6}, while compounds 2-L and 3-L exhibited overlapping peaks of Ln3+ and {Ag5S6} at different excitation wavelengths. This demonstrates the tunable photoluminescence from {Ag5S6} to Ln3+ by introducing different Ln3+ ions and manipulating the excitation wavelengths. The study underscores the enhanced stability of Ag(I) cluster-based MOFs achieved through the incorporation of Ln3+ ions and establishes chiral Ln-Ag(I) cluster-based MOFs as promising candidates for advanced materials with tunable photoluminescence.

Atomic/molecular layer deposition of europium-organic thin films on nanoplasmonic structures towards FRET-based applications

We present a novel atomic/molecular layer deposition (ALD/MLD) process for europium-organic thin films based on Eu(thd)3 and 2-hydroxyquinoline-4-carboxylic acid (HQA) precursors. The process yields with appreciably high growth rate luminescent Eu-HQA thin films in which the organic HQA component acts as a sensitizer for the red Eu3+ luminescence, extending the excitation wavelength range up to ca. 400 nm. We moreover deposit these films on nanoplasmonic structures to achieve a twentyfold enhanced emission intensity. Finally, we demonstrate the FRET-type energy transfer process for our Eu-HQA coated nanoplasmonic structures in combination with commercial Alexa647 fluorophor, underlining their potential towards novel bioimaging applications.

Luminescent lanthanide probes for cations and anions: Promises, compromises, and caveats

The long luminescence lifetimes and sharp emission bands of luminescent lanthanide complexes have long been recognized as invaluable strengths for sensing and imaging in complex aqueous biological or environmental media. Herein we discuss the recent developments of these probes for sensing metal ions and, increasingly, anions. Underappreciated in the field, buffers and metal hydrolysis influence the response of many responsive lanthanide probes. The inherent complexities arising from these interactions are further discussed.

Composition Control in Molecular Cluster-Aggregates: A Toolbox for Optical Output Tunability via Energy Transfer Pathways

Composition control is a powerful tool for obtaining high-performance lanthanide (Ln) luminescent materials with adjustable optical outputs. This strategy is well-established for hierarchically structured nanoparticles, but it is rarely applied to molecular compounds due to the limited number of metal centers within a single unit. In this work, we present a series of molecular cluster-aggregates (MCAs) with an icosanuclear core {Ln2Eu2Tb16} (Ln = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb) in which we explore composition control, akin to nanoparticles, to modulate the optical output. More specifically, we target to understand how the presence of a third LnIII doping ion would impact the well-known TbIII → EuIII energy transfer and the ratiometric optical thermometry performance based on the TbIII/EuIII pair. Photophysical properties at room and at varying temperatures were investigated. Based on experimental data and well-established intrinsic features, such as spin-orbit coupling strength and LnIII 4f energy levels' structure, we discuss the possible luminescent processes present in each MCA and provide insight into qualitative trends that can be rationally correlated throughout the series.

Tetranuclear lanthanide-based silsesquioxanes: towards a combination of a slow relaxation of the magnetization and a luminescent thermometry

Lanthanide-based silsesquioxanes constitute an emerging family of cage-like metallasilsesquioxanes with exciting optical and magnetic properties. We report here the synthesis, structures and luminescence properties of a series of tetranuclear lanthanide-silsesquioxane compounds of general formula [NEt4]2[(Ph4Si4O8)2(Ln/Ln')4(NO3)6(EtOH)2(MeCN)2]·4(MeCN) with different lanthanide ions (where Ln/Ln' = Dy3+/Eu3+ (1), Dy3+/Tb3+ (2) and Eu3+/Tb3+/Y3+ (3)) and investigate the impact of the lanthanide ions combination on magnetic and photo-luminescent properties. Compound 1 behaves as a field-induced Single Molecule Magnet (SMM) and presents temperature-dependent luminescence characteristics of Eu3+ making it an emissive thermometer working in the temperature range 293-373 K with the maximum relative sensitivity of 1.15% K-1 achieved at 293 K. Compounds 2 and 3 are paramagnets, which demonstrate a characteristic photoluminescence with Dy3+ to Tb3+ and Tb3+ to Eu3+ energy transfers, respectively.

Solid state structures and solution behaviour of tetranuclear lanthanide(III) carbonate-bridged coordination compounds of chiral 3 + 3 amine macrocycle

The linking of two dinuclear macrocyclic units of large triphenolic hexaazamine by two carbonate anions results in the formation of dimeric tetranuclear Sm(III), Eu(III) and Gd(III) complexes. These complexes were initially obtained serendipitously by fixation of atmospheric carbon dioxide and subsequently obtained in a rational way by the application of carbonate salts. The X-ray crystal structures of these isomorphic complexes show highly folded conformation of the macrocycle. This type of conformation is also confirmed by 2D NMR spectra of the Sm(III) complex. The ESI-MS and NMR spectra reveal also that these carbonate complexes exist in solution in two different forms that are in a concentration-dependent dynamic equilibrium.

The Application of Bio-orthogonality for In Vivo Animal Imaging

The application of bio-orthogonality has greatly facilitated numerous aspects of biological studies in recent years. In particular, bio-orthogonal chemistry has transformed biological research, including in vitro conjugate chemistry, target identification, and biomedical imaging. In this review, we highlighted examples of bio-orthogonal in vivo imaging published in recent years. We grouped the references into two major categories: bio-orthogonal chemistry-related imaging and in vivo imaging with bio-orthogonal nonconjugated pairing. Lastly, we discussed the challenges and opportunities of bio-orthogonality for in vivo imaging.

Silica-Based Materials Containing Inorganic Red/NIR Emitters and Their Application in Biomedicine

The low absorption of biological substances and living tissues in the red/near-infrared region (therapeutic window) makes luminophores emitting in the range of ~650-1350 nm favorable for in vitro and in vivo imaging. In contrast to commonly used organic dyes, inorganic red/NIR emitters, including ruthenium complexes, quantum dots, lanthanide compounds, and octahedral cluster complexes of molybdenum and tungsten, not only exhibit excellent emission in the desired region but also possess additional functional properties, such as photosensitization of the singlet oxygen generation process, upconversion luminescence, photoactivated effects, and so on. However, despite their outstanding functional applicability, they share the same drawback-instability in aqueous media under physiological conditions, especially without additional modifications. One of the most effective and thus widely used types of modification is incorporation into silica, which is (1) easy to obtain, (2) biocompatible, and (3) non-toxic. In addition, the variety of morphological characteristics, along with simple surface modification, provides room for creativity in the development of various multifunctional diagnostic/therapeutic platforms. In this review, we have highlighted biomedical applications of silica-based materials containing red/NIR-emitting compounds.

Excitation Wavelength Engineering through Organic Linker Choice in Luminescent Atomic/Molecular Layer Deposited Lanthanide-Organic Thin Films

We demonstrate multiple roles for the organic linker in luminescent lanthanide-organic thin films grown with the strongly emerging atomic/molecular layer deposition technique. Besides rendering the hybrid thin film mechanically flexible and keeping the lanthanide nodes at a distance adequate to avoid concentration quenching, the organic moieties can act as efficient sensitizers for the lanthanide luminescence. We investigate six different aromatic organic precursors in combination with Eu3+ ions to reveal that by introducing different nitrogen species within the aromatic ring, it is possible to extend the excitation wavelength area from the UV range to the visible range. This opens new horizons for the application space of these efficiently photoluminescent thin-film materials.

Synthesis, solid state characterization, theoretical and experimental spectroscopic studies of the new lanthanide complexes

Three new complexes Na[Ln(pic)₄]ּ⋅2.5H₂O (Ln = Tb, Eu or Gd; pic = picolinate) were synthesized and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analyses. The molecular structures of the complexes have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The three isostructural lanthanide complexes crystalize in the hexagonal system with space group P6₁22 to Eu complex and Gd complex and space group P6₅22 to Tb complex. In each of the complexes, the picolinate ligands are bonded to Ln³⁺ and Na⁺ ions by different coordination modes promoting polymeric structures. The photoluminescent properties of complexes were studied and combined with theoretical studies using the density functional theory (DFT: B3LYP, PBE1PBE) and the semiempirical method AM1/Sparkle from the single crystal X-ray diffraction structures to assign a suitable model for describing the system. The B3LYP DFT functional was considered the most adequate for providing structural properties of the compounds and for describing luminescence properties. The excited triplet states (T₁) and excited singlet states (S₁) of the ligand were determined theoretically using Time-dependent DFT calculations (TD-DFT: B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP and LC-wPBE) and INDO/S-CIS, with the best agreement with experimental values obtained from the LC-wPBE DFT functional. The photoluminescent spectra of the complexes and their lifetime measurements were determined indicating that the Eu complex and Tb complex display different intramolecular energy transfer mechanisms with higher efficiency to ligand-to-terbium energy transfer. In addition, the experimental and theorical Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters and quantum yields of the complexes were also determined and discussed besides to a proposed 9-state diagram to describe the luminescence properties of the Eu complex. The low value of emission quantum efficiency of ⁵D₀ emitting level of Eu(III) ion was explained by the presence of the ligand-to-metal charge transfer state (LMCT) evidenced experimentally and theoretically. A good agreement was obtained between the proposed kinetic model and experimental results showing the consistency of the set of rate equations assumed and the intramolecular pathways proposed.

Mediating Photochemical Reaction Rates at Lewis Acidic Rare Earths by Selective Energy Loss to 4f-Electron States

Manifesting chemical differences in individual rare earth (RE) element complexes is challenging due to the similar sizes of the tripositive cations and the corelike 4f shell. We disclose a new strategy for differentiating between similarly sized Dy³⁺ and Y³⁺ ions through a tailored photochemical reaction of their isostructural complexes in which the f-electron states of Dy³⁺ act as an energy sink. Complexes RE(hfac)₃(NMMO)₂ (RE = Dy (2-Dy) and Y (2-Y), hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate, and NMMO = N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide) showed variable rates of oxygen atom transfer (OAT) to triphenylphosphine under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, as monitored by ¹H and ¹⁹F NMR spectroscopies. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) identified the excited state(s) responsible for the photochemical OAT reaction or lack thereof. Competing sensitization pathways leading to excited-state deactivation in 2-Dy through energy transfer to the 4f electron manifold ultimately slows the OAT reaction at this metal cation. The measured rate differences between the open-shell Dy³⁺ and closed-shell Y³⁺ complexes demonstrate that using established principles of 4f ion sensitization may deliver new, selective modalities for differentiating the RE elements that do not depend on cation size.

Exploring Ln(III)-Ion-Based Luminescent Species as Down-Shifters for Photovoltaic Solar Cells

In this work, we have compiled our research on lanthanide-based luminescent materials for use as down-shifter layers in photovoltaic (PV) mini-modules. The complexes we have prepared (C1-17), with formulas [Eu₂(phen)₂(bz)₆] (C1), [Eu₂(bphen)₂(bz)₆] (C2), [Eu(tta)₃bphen] (C3), [Eu(bta)₃pyz-phen] (C4), [Eu(tta)₃pyz-phen] (C5), [Eu(bta)₃me-phen] (C6), [Er(bta)₃me-phen] (C7), [Yb(bta)₃me-phen] (C8), [Gd(bta)₃me-phen] (C9), [Yb(bta)₃pyz-phen] (C10), [Er(tta)₃pyz-phen] (C11), [Eu₂(bz)₄(tta)₂(phen)₂] (C12), [Gd₂(bz)₄(tta)₂(phen)₂] (C13), [EuTb(bz)₄(tta)₂(phen)₂] (C14), [EuGd(bz)₄(tta)₂(phen)₂] (C15), [Eu_1.2Gd_0.8(bz)₄(tta)₂(phen)₂] (C16), and [Eu_1.6Gd_0.4(bz)₄(tta)₂(phen)₂] (C17), can be grouped into three families based on their composition: Complexes C1-6 were synthesized using Eu³⁺ ions and phenanthroline derivatives as the neutral ligands and fluorinated β-diketonates as the anionic ligands. Complexes C7-11 were prepared with ligands similar to those of complexes C1-6 but were synthesized with Er³⁺, Yb³⁺, or Gd³⁺ ions. Complexes C12-17 have the general formula [M1M2(bz)₄(tta)₂(phen)₂], where M1 and M2 can be Eu³⁺, Gd³⁺, or Tb³⁺ ions, and the ligands were benzoate (bz^-), 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone (tta^-), and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen). Most of the complexes were characterized using X-ray techniques, and their photoluminescent properties were studied. We then assessed the impact of complexes in the C1-6 and C12-17 series on the EQE of PV mini-modules and examined the durability of one of the complexes (C6) in a climate chamber when embedded in PMMA and EVA films. This study emphasizes the methodology employed and the key findings, including enhanced mini-module efficiency. Additionally, we present promising results on the application of complex C6 in a bifacial solar cell.

Highly efficient light harvesting of a Eu(iii) complex in a host-guest film by triplet sensitization

Trivalent lanthanide complexes are attractive light emitters owing to their ideal high color purity. Sensitization using ligands with high absorption efficiency is a powerful approach to enhancing photoluminescence intensity. However, the development of antenna ligands that can be used for sensitization is limited due to difficulties in controlling the coordination structures of lanthanides. When compared to conventional luminescent Eu(iii) complexes, a system composed of triazine-based host molecules and Eu(hfa)₃(TPPO)₂ (hfa: hexafluoroacetylacetonato and TPPO: triphenylphosphine oxide) significantly increased total photoluminescence intensity. Energy transfer from the host molecules to the Eu(iii) ion occurs via triplet states over several molecules, according to time-resolved spectroscopic studies, with nearly 100% efficiency. Our discovery paves the way for efficient light harvesting of Eu(iii) complexes with simple fabrication using a solution process.

Synthesis and real-time monitoring of the morphological evolution of luminescent Eu(TCPP) MOFs

Real-time acquisition of the morphological information of nanomaterials is crucial to achieving morphological controllable synthesis, albeit being challenging. A novel device was designed, which integrated dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma synthesis and simultaneous in situ spectral monitoring of the formation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Important dynamic luminescence behaviors such as coordination induced emission (CIE), antenna effect (AE), and red-blue shift were continuously captured to reveal the spectral emission mechanism and energy transfer progress and verify the correlation with the morphological evolution of the MOFs. The prediction and control of morphology were successfully achieved with Eu(TCPP) as a model MOF. The proposed method will shed new light on exploring the spectral emission mechanism, energy conversion and in situ morphology monitoring of other luminescent materials.
