Abstract
Isocyanide is a promising synthetic reagent not only as a one-carbon homologation reagent but also as a nitrogen source for nitrogen-containing molecules. Because of their isoelectronic structure with carbon monoxide, isocyanides also react with nucleophiles, electrophiles, carbon radicals, and transition metal reagents, and are widely used in organic synthesis. On the other hand, the use of isocyanides in reactions with heteroatom radicals is limited. However, the reaction of isocyanides with heteroatom radicals is a promising synthetic tool for the construction of nitrogen-containing organic molecules modified with a variety of heteroatoms. In this Perspective, we review the addition and cyclization reactions of heteroatom radicals with isocyanides and discuss the synthetic prospects of the reaction of isocyanides with heteroatom radicals.

Abstract
The dimerization of nitrogen monoxide (NO) is highly relevant in homo- and heterogeneous biochemical and environmental redox processes, but a broader understanding is challenged by the endergonic nature of this equilibrium. The present work describes NO-dimerization leveraged by structurally constrained aluminum and metal-ligand cooperativity at the anionic calix[4]pyrrolato aluminate(III). Quantum chemical calculations reveal the driving force for N-N bond formation, while reactivity tests shed light on subsequent redox chemistry and NO decomposition at metal surfaces. Inhibiting the dimerization pathway by saturating NO's unpaired electron with a phenyl group (nitrosobenzene) allows trapping the 1,2-adduct as a key intermediate. Elevated temperatures result in an unprecedented and high-yielding rearrangement of the calix[4]pyrrolato ligand scaffold. Kinetic and theoretical studies provide a comprehensive picture of the rearrangement mechanism and delineate systematics for ring modification of the prominent calix[4]pyrrole macrocycle.

Abstract
Activation of small molecules is considered to be a central concern in the theoretical investigation of environment- and energy-related catalytic conversions. Sub-nanostructured frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) have been an emerging research hotspot in recent years due to their advantages in small molecule activation. Although the progress of catalytic applications of FLPs is increasingly reported, the fundamental theories related to the structural formation, site regulation, and catalytic mechanism of FLPs have not yet been fully developed. Given this, it is attempted to demonstrate the underlying theory of FLPs formation, corresponding regulation methods, and its activation mechanism on small molecules using CeO2 as the representative metal oxide. Specifically, this paper presents three fundamental principles for constructing FLPs on CeO2 surfaces, and feasible engineering methods for the regulation of FLPs sites are presented. Furthermore, cases where typical small molecules (e.g., hydrogen, carbon dioxide, methane oxygen, etc.) are activated over FLPs are analyzed. Meanwhile, corresponding future challenges for the development of FLPs-centered theory are presented. The insights presented in this paper may contribute to the theories of FLPs, which can potentially provide inspiration for the development of broader environment- and energy-related catalysis involving small molecule activation.

Abstract
Derived from structurally similar precursors, two different azidodiboranes went through distinct aryl migration reactions triggered by different boron-boron separation distances. Biphenylene based diborane with a shorter boron-boron distance underwent heterolateral aryl migration to form a seven-membered azadiborepin, while xanthrene based diborane with a longer boron-boron distance afforded a stable bis-azidoborane scaffold. The pyrolysis of such a bis-azidoborane led to eight-membered oxazadiborocine through homolateral aryl migration and subsequent [3+2] cycloaddition. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations unveiled that the boron-boron separation distances were the intrinsic factors for the distinct migrations.

Abstract
This study reports on the exploration of the phosphinoboration reaction with several thiosemicarbazones (R5R4NC(S)NR3N=CR1R2). Reactions between either Ph2PBpin (pin = 1,2-O2C2Me4) or Ph2PBcat (cat = 1,2-O2C6H4) with thiosemicarbazones containing a terminal primary or secondary amine afforded boron-containing heterocyclic 1,3,4-thiadiazoline products in excellent yield. The addition of Ph2PBpin to thiosemicarbazones containing an NMe2 group in the terminal position generated novel five-membered heterocycles in moderate yield, which included boron, sulfur, and nitrogen atoms. Heterocyclization of the thiosemicarbazones occurs preferentially in the presence of functional groups such as acetyl and pyridyl groups.

Abstract
We report two BNB‐type frustrated Lewis pairs which feature an acceptor‐donor‐acceptor functionalized cavity, and which differ in the nature of the B‐bound fluoroaryl group (C6F5 vs. C6H3(CF3)2‐3,5, Arf). These receptor systems are capable of capturing gaseous CO, and in the case of the ‐BArf2 system this can be shown to occur in reversible fashion at/above room temperature. For both systems, the binding event is accompanied by migration of one of the aryl substituents to the electrophilic carbon of the CO guest. Experiments utilizing an additional equivalent of PtBu3 allow the initially formed (non‐migrated) CO adduct to be identified and trapped (via demethylation), while also establishing the reversibility of the B‐to‐C migration process. When partnered with the slightly less Lewis acidic ‐BArf2 substituent, this reversibility allows for release of the captured carbon monoxide in the temperature range 40–70 °C, and the possibility for CO sensing, making use of the associated colourless to orange/red colour change.

Abstract
Intramolecular vicinal Frustrated Lewis Pairs (FLPs) have played a significant role in the activation of small molecules, and their stabilities and reactivities are found to strongly depend on the nature of the bridging units. This work reports a new carborane based FLP, 1-PPh2-2-BPh2-1,2-C2B10H10 (2), which reacts with an equimolar amount of p-R2NC6H4C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CH (R = Me, Et, Ph) at room temperature to give C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C triple bond addition products 1,2-[PPh2C(R2NC6H4)[double bond, length as m-dash]CHBPh2]-1,2-C2B10H10 (3) in high yields. Compounds 3 react further with two equiv. of p-R2NC6H4C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CH (R = Me, Et) at 60-70 °C to give unprecedented stereoselective tri-insertion products, 3,3a,6,6a-tetrahydronaphtho[1,8a-b]borole tricycles (4), in which one of the aryl rings from arylacetylene moieties has been dearomatized with the formation of four stereocenters including one quaternary carbon center. It is noted that the phosphine unit functions as a catalyst during the reactions. After trapping and structural characterization of a key intermediate, a reaction mechanism is proposed, involving sequential alkyne insertion and 1,2-boryl migration.

Abstract
Boron's unique position in the Periodic Table, that is, at the apex of the line separating metals and nonmetals, makes it highly versatile in chemical reactions and applications. Contemporary demand for renewable and clean energy as well as energy-efficient products has seen boron playing key roles in energy-related research, such as 1) activating and synthesizing energy-rich small molecules, 2) storing chemical and electrical energy, and 3) converting electrical energy into light. These applications are fundamentally associated with boron's unique characteristics, such as its electron-deficiency and the availability of an unoccupied p orbital, which allow the formation of a myriad of compounds with a wide range of chemical and physical properties. For example, boron's ability to achieve a full octet of electrons with four covalent bonds and a negative charge has led to the synthesis of a wide variety of borate anions of high chemical and electrochemical stability-in particular, weakly coordinating anions. This Review summarizes recent advances in the study of boron compounds for energy-related processes and applications.

Abstract
Internal and terminal alkynes react with phosphanylalumanes, i. e., P-Al single-bond species, through heating but without any additional additives. The reactions with internal alkynes afforded the corresponding adducts with cis-1,2-form in moderate yields (54-80 %). In addition, alkyne adducts thus obtained function as P/Al-based C2 -vicinal FLPs, and the FLP addition reactions with benzaldehyde and CO2 were demonstrated. Furthermore, in the reaction of 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl-substituted alkyne adducts with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate, an unexpected CAr -CMe bond cleavage characteristic of this system was demonstrated.

Abstract
Activation of dioxygen (O2) by 1,4,2,5-diazadiborinine 1 is reported. Two boron centers in 1 undergo a formal [4 + 2] cycloaddition with O2 at room temperature affording a bicyclo[2.2.2] molecule 2 featuring a B-O-O-B unit. Treatment of 2 with an additional equivalent of 1 leads to the cleavage of the O-O bond in 2 concomitant with the formation of two B-O bonds to yield 4 involving the extremely rare B4C2N2O2 ten-membered rings. A series of these reactions demonstrate the stepwise scission of the O[double bond, length as m-dash]O π-bond and the O-O σ-bond of O2.

Abstract
(C6 F5 )2 B-halides were conveniently prepared by treatment of (C6 F5 )2 BH with tritylchloride or -bromide, respectively. With cyclopropylacetylene, (C6 F5 )2 BBr underwent sequential cis-1,2-halogenoboration followed by 1,2-carboboration to give the 4-bromo-2,4-dicyclopropylbutadienyl-B(C6 F5 )2 product. It reacted further with additional cyclopropylacetylene to give the linear triene and tetraene products in a metal-free alkyne oligomerization reaction. The pyridine adduct of the initial diene product was characterized by X-ray diffraction. (C6 F5 )2 BCl reacted analogously. Similar (C6 F5 )2 BX induced oligomerization reactions were carried out with two conjugated enynes.

Insertion reactions of small unsaturated molecules in the N-B bonds of boron guanidinates. Dalton Trans 2017; 46:10281-10299. Abstract
We report here 1,1- and 1,2-insertion reactions of small unsaturated molecules in the N-B bonds of two boron guanidinates, (Me2N)C(NiPr)2BCy2 (1) and {iPr(H)N}C(NiPr){N(p-tBu-C6H4)}BCy2 (2), and two bisboron guanidinates(2-), {iPr(BCy2)N}C(NiPr){N(p-tBu-C6H4)}BCy2 (3) and {iPr(C8H14B)N}C(NiPr){N(p-Me-C6H4)}BC8H14 (4), the latter being prepared for the first time by double deprotonation of the corresponding guanidine with the 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane dimer, (H-BC8H14)2. Compounds 1-4 easily insert aromatic isonitriles, XylNC (Xyl = 2,6-Me2-C6H3) and (p-MeO-C6H4)NC, to give the expected diazaboroles 5-12, some of them being structurally characterised by X-ray diffraction. Interestingly, the BC8H14 derivatives 11 and 12 are in a fast temperature-dependent equilibrium with the de-insertion products, whose thermodynamic parameters are reported here. A correlation between these equilibria and the puckered heterocyclic structure found in the solid state for 11, and confirmed by DFT calculations, is also established. Reactions of the aforementioned guanidinates with CO are more sluggish or even precluded, and only one product, {iPr(H)N}C{N(p-tBu-C6H4)}(NiPr)(CO)BCy2 (13), could be isolated in moderate yields. The 1,2-insertions of benzaldehyde in compounds 1, 2 and 4 are reversible reactions in all cases, and only one of the insertion products, {iPr(H)N}C{N(p-tBu-C6H4)}(NiPr)(PhHCO)BCy2 (16a), was isolated and diffractrometrically characterised. Likewise, CO2 reversibly inserts into a N-B bond of 2 to give {iPr(H)N}C{N(p-tBu-C6H4)}(NiPr)(CO2)BCy2 (19) with a conversion of ca. 9%. In all these equilibria, de-insertion is always favoured upon increasing the temperature.

Abstract
We report a new class of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) by the hydroboration of bulky isocyanates iPr2 ArNCO (iPr2 Ar=2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 ) and Ph2tBu ArNCO (Ph2tBu Ar=2,6-Ph2 -4-tBuC6 H2 ) with Piers' borane (HB(C6 F5 )2 ). While hydroboration of smaller isocyanates such as iPr2 ArNCO leads to isocyanate-N/B FLP adducts, hydroboration of the bulkier Ph2tBu ArNCO allows isolation of the substrate-free aminoborane with a short, covalent N-B bond. This confused FLP reversibly binds unsaturated substrates such as isocyanates and isocyanides, suggesting the intermediacy of a "normal" FLP along the reaction pathway, supported by high-level DFT studies and variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy. These results underscore the possibility of FLP behavior in systems that possess no obvious frustrated Lewis acid-base interaction.

Abstract
Lewis acidic fluorinated organoantimony(v) derivatives have been combined with phosphines for the complexation and colourimetric sensing of formaldehyde in biphasic water/CH2Cl2 mixtures.
As part of our ongoing studies of water tolerant Lewis acids, we have synthesized and investigated the properties of Sb(C6F5)3(O2C6Cl4), a fluorinated stiborane whose Lewis acidity approaches that of B(C6F5)3. While chloroform solutions of this Lewis acid can be kept open to air or exposed to water for extended periods of time, this new Lewis acid reacts with PtBu3 and paraformaldehyde to form the corresponding formaldehyde adduct tBu3P–CH2–O–Sb(C6F5)3(O2C6Cl4). To test if this reactivity can also be observed with systems that combine the phosphine and the stiborane within the same molecule, we have also prepared o-C6H4(PPh2)(SbAr2(O2C6Cl4)) (Ar = Ph, C6F5). These yellow compounds, which possess an intramolecular P→Sb interaction, are remarkably inert to water but do, nonetheless, react with and accomodate formaldehyde into the P/Sb pocket. In the case of the fluorinated derivative o-C6H4(PPh2)(Sb(C6F5)2(O2C6Cl4)), formaldehyde complexation, which occurs in water/dichloromethane biphasic mixtures, is accompanied by a colourimetric turn-off response thus highlighting the potential that this chemistry holds in the domain of molecular sensing.

Abstract
Hydroboration of dimesitylvinylphosphane with bis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borane [HB(Fxyl)2 ] gave the intramolecular ethylene-bridged P/B frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) Mes2 PCH2 CH2 B(Fxyl)2 . The new compound underwent a variety of typical FLP reactions such as P/B-addition to the carbonyl group of p-chloro-benzaldehyde. Cooperative N,N-addition to nitric oxide gave the respective persistent P/B FLPNO(.) radical, which readily reacted with 1,4-cyclohexadiene by H-atom abstraction to yield the corresponding P/B FLPNOH product. The B(Fxyl)2 -containing FLP reacted as a template for the HB(C6 F5 )2 reduction of carbon monoxide to the formyl stage to give the respective FLP(η(2) -formylborane) product. Most products were characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystal structure analysis.

Abstract
A series of naphthyl-bridged amino-borane derivatives, namely 1-(dimethylamino)-8-naphthylboranes (1, 3, 5, 7) and 5-(dimethylamino)-6-acenaphthylboranes (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11), differing in the steric and electronic properties of the boryl moiety, have been synthesized and fully characterized by spectroscopic and crystallographic means. Structural X-ray analysis of the peri-atom displacement and ring torsion angles served to experimentally assess the presence and magnitude of the B-N interactions. The reversible quaternarization of nitrogen has been explored and was found to provide an efficient switch corresponding to different molecular organizations. The electronic characteristics of the nature of B-N interactions were further studied by Natural Bonding Orbital analysis derived from the theoretically calculated electron densities. This real-space bonding indicator discriminates the bonding B-N contact in 5 from the nonbonding in 8, which correlates with the flexibility of the naphthyl scaffold to respond to the Lewis acidity of boron allowing shorter peri interactions. Whereas, the steric shielding imposed by the two mesityl groups, and/or the rigidity of the acenaphthene framework disrupt B-N interaction. Thus, this communication reports on the modulation of the B-N bonding continuum by means of structural tuning leading to a molecular switch, as well as its implications towards revealing FLP reactivities through the isolation of intermediates of a stepwise mechanism.
