Effects of environmental metal and metalloid pollutants on plants and human health: exploring nano-remediation approach

Metal and metalloid pollutants severely threatens environmental ecosystems and human health, necessitating effective remediation strategies. Nanoparticle (NPs)-based approaches have gained significant attention as promising solutions for efficient removing heavy metals from various environmental matrices. The present review is focused on green synthesized NPs-mediated remediation such as the implementation of iron, carbon-based nanomaterials, metal oxides, and bio-based NPs. The review also explores the mechanisms of NPs interactions with heavy metals, including adsorption, precipitation, and redox reactions. Critical factors influencing the remediation efficiency, such as NPs size, surface charge, and composition, are systematically examined. Furthermore, the environmental fate, transport, and potential risks associated with the application of NPs are critically evaluated. The review also highlights various sources of metal and metalloid pollutants and their impact on human health and translocation in plant tissues. Prospects and challenges in translating NPs-based remediation from laboratory research to real-world applications are proposed. The current work will be helpful to direct future research endeavors and promote the sustainable implementation of metal and metalloid elimination.

Sources, effects and present perspectives of heavy metals contamination: Soil, plants and human food chain

Heavy metal (HM) poisoning of agricultural soils poses a serious risk to plant life, human health, and global food supply. When HM levels in agricultural soils get to dangerous levels, it harms crop health and yield. Chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) are the main heavy metals. The environment contains these metals in varying degrees, such as in soil, food, water, and even the air. These substances damage plants and alter soil characteristics, which lowers crop yield. Crop types, growing circumstances, elemental toxicity, developmental stage, soil physical and chemical properties, and the presence and bioavailability of heavy metals (HMs) in the soil solution are some of the factors affecting the amount of HM toxicity in crops. By interfering with the normal structure and function of cellular components, HMs can impede various metabolic and developmental processes. Humans are exposed to numerous serious diseases by consuming these affected plant products. Exposure to certain metals can harm the kidneys, brain, intestines, lungs, liver, and other organs of the human body. This review assesses (1) contamination of heavy metals in soils through different sources, like anthropogenic and natural; (2) the effect on microorganisms and the chemical and physical properties of soil; (3) the effect on plants as well as crop production; and (4) entering the food chain and associated hazards to human health. Lastly, we identified certain research gaps and suggested further study. If people want to feel safe in their surroundings, there needs to be stringent regulation of the release of heavy metals into the environment.

Enhancing start-up strategies for anammox granular sludge systems: A review

The anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process has been developed as one of the optimal alternatives to the conventional biological nitrogen removal process because of its high nitrogen removal capacity and low energy consumption. However, the slow growth rate of anammox bacteria and its high sensitivity to environmental changes have resulted in fewer anammox sludge sources for process start-up and a lengthy start-up period. Given that anammox microorganisms tend to aggregate, granular-anammox sludge is a frequent byproduct of the anammox process. In this study, we review state-of-the-art strategies for promoting the formation of anammox granules and the start-up of the anammox process based on the literature of the past decade. These strategies are categorized as the transformation of alternative sludge, the addition of accelerators, the introduction of functional carriers, and the implementation of other physical methods. In addition, the formation mechanism of anammox granules, the operational performance of various strategies, and their promotion mechanisms are introduced. Finally, prospects are presented to indicate the gaps in contemporary research and the potential future research directions. This review functions as a summary guideline and theoretical reference for the cultivation of granular-anammox sludge, the start-up of the anammox process, and its practical application.

Adsorption process modeling to reduce COD by activated carbon for wastewater treatment

Investigations have been carried out on the utilization of Activated Carbon (AC) in adsorption processes for the wastewater treatment of industry and municipal. Sulfides materials, phenols and furfural is a toxic compounds in wastewater from refineries can adversely affect the performance of biological aeration basins in reducing COD levels. This work aims to provide the effectiveness of AC in reducing the COD level of the effluent from the Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) unit to meet standards of environments protecting and pass the design of wastewater treatment plants. A dynamic adsorption model was developed based on the dispersion of axial in the AC packed bed, assuming that the LDF (linear driving force) model in to the adsorbents is agreed to mass transfer. The model's predictions of chemical oxygen demand breakthrough curve concentrations showed excellent agreement with experimental data. The sensitivity analysis of operational conditions such as flow rate, inlet concentration of COD and bed length was used to gain a better understanding of the optimal design of an AC fixed bed. The results suggest that an AC fixed bed can complement biological treatment of wastewater and address the challenges faced by biological basins in oil refineries.

Study on the role of AlOOH in fluorescence correction and depth purification of Cyclops water

Protein-like substances produced by biochemical reactions after disinfection of Zooplankton like Cyclops and humic substances in natural water are the main components of NOM (Natural organic matter). To eliminate early warning interference in the fluorescence detection of organic matter in natural water, a clustered flower-like AlOOH (aluminum oxide hydroxide) sorbent was prepared. HA (humic acid) and amino acids were selected as mimics of humic substances and protein-like substances in natural water. The results demonstrate that the adsorbent can selectively adsorb HA from the simulated mixed solution and restore the fluorescence properties of tryptophan and tyrosine. Based on these results, a stepwise fluorescence detection strategy was developed and used in natural water rich in zooplanktonic Cyclops. The results show that the established stepwise fluorescence strategy can well overcome the interference caused by fluorescence quenching. The sorbent was also used for water quality control to enhance coagulation treatment. Finally, trial runs of the water plant demonstrated its effectiveness and suggested a potential control method for early warning and monitoring of water quality.

Flushing control strategies to improve the stability of a biogas slurry drip irrigation system: Behavioral characteristics and mechanisms

Biogas slurry drip irrigation can mitigate environmental pollution and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers to enable sustainable development. However, the stability of the biogas slurry drip irrigation system (BSDIS) is disrupted by emitter clogging; hence, it is essential to explore the flushing control strategy of BSDIS. By means of combining actual measurement and simulation, this study investigates the BSDIS stability based on the three technical parameters of the flushing control strategy. Appropriate flushing control strategies can improve system stability and cause spatial differences on the drip irrigation tape. Under various flushing control strategies, the system stability primarily undergoes delays, sensitivity, and ineffectiveness of flushing with time. Compared with the without flushing and emitter outlet downward-oriented treatment, the optimal flushing combination (the high frequency flushing + emitter outlet upward-oriented treatment) reduces the emitter clogging content by approximately 70.97% and increases system stability by 189.1%. In the internal hydrodynamics, the laying direction of emitters does not change the movement characteristics of water flow, although the clogging particles do not completely follow the water flow, with some particles settling owing to gravity, thereby clotting the emitters. When clogging occurs, the increase in flushing speed is conducive to the increase in turbulent kinetic energy on the inlet surface of the emitter, which facilitate the flushing of clogged substances. This study proposes optimal flushing strategy parameters along with a new management mode for the waste liquid represented by biogas slurry.

Impact of textile dyes on health and ecosystem: a review of structure, causes, and potential solutions

The rapid growth of population and industrialization have intensified the problem of water pollution globally. To meet the challenge of industrialization, the use of synthetic dyes in the textile industry, dyeing and printing industry, tannery and paint industry, paper and pulp industry, cosmetic and food industry, dye manufacturing industry, and pharmaceutical industry has increased exponentially. Among these industries, the textile industry is prominent for the water pollution due to the hefty consumption of water and discharge of coloring materials in the effluent. The discharge of this effluent into the aquatic reservoir affects its biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), and pH. The release of the effluents without any remedial treatment will generate a gigantic peril to the aquatic ecosystem and human health. The ecological-friendly treatment of the dye-containing wastewater to minimize the detrimental effect on human health and the environment is the need of the hour. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the catastrophic effects of textile dyes on human health and the environment. This review provides a comprehensive insight into the dyes and chemicals used in the textile industry, focusing on the typical treatment processes for their removal from industrial wastewaters, including chemical, biological, physical, and hybrid techniques.

A perspective on the interaction between biochar and soil microbes: A way to regain soil eminence

Soil ecosystem imparts a fundamental role in the growth and survival of the living creatures. The interaction between living and non-living constituents of the environment is important for the regulation of life in the ecosystem. Biochar is a carbon rich product present in the soil that is responsible for various applications in diversified fields. In this review, we focused on the collaboration between the soil, biochar and microbial community present in the soil and consequences of it in the ecosystem. Herein, it primarily discusses on the different approaches of the production and characterization of biochar. Furthermore, this review also discusses about the optimistic interaction of biochar with soil microbes and their role in plant growth. Eventually, it reveals the various physio-chemical properties of biochar, including its specific surface area, porous nature, ion exchange capacity, and pH, which aid in the modification of the soil environment. Furthermore, it elaborately discloses the impact of the biochar addition in the soil focusing mainly on its interaction with microbial communities such as bacteria and fungi. The physicochemical properties of biochar significantly interact with microbes and improve the beneficial microbes growth and increase soil nutrients, which resulting reasonable plant growth. The main focus remains on the role of biochar-soil microbiota in remediation of pollutants, soil amendment and inhibition of pathogenicity among plants by promoting resistance potential. It highlights the fact that adding biochar to soil modulates the soil microbial community by increasing soil fertility, paving the way for its use in farming, and pollutant removal.

Agro-environmental sustainability of using digestate fertilizer for solanaceous and leafy vegetables cultivation: Insights on fertilizer efficiency and risk assessment

Digestate generated from anaerobic digestion (AD) has been widely used as digestate fertilizer (DF) for plant growth, but its application should be comprehensively investigated. This study evaluates the effects of different amounts of DF on crop growth, nutrient use efficiency (NUE), soil properties, and potential negative impacts of DF application (salinity and heavy metals (HMs)) with two different crops (Eggplant and Shanghai cabbage). In eggplant cultivation, the yield increased with the increase of DF amount, and the yield of the DF-680 group was the highest (65.4 t/ha) under the highest fertilizer amount. However, due to high ammonia volatilization loss and excessive application, the NUE of DF was only about half of that of chemical fertilizer (CF). Significantly different from eggplant, the high application amount of DF resulted in yield reduction in Shanghai cabbage cultivation. The yield and NUE of the DF-170 group were the highest, the yield was 46.5 t/ha, and the NUE was more than twice compared to CF. Moreover, DF can raise soil nitrogen storage and alleviate soil acidification caused by fertilization in both batches of cultivation. Nevertheless, the electrical conductivity (EC) value of the soil was increased by 2-3 times, and the long-term application may lead to soil salinization. On the other hand, the increase of DF application elevated the content of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and cadmium (Cd) in soil significantly but did not cause HMs contamination in crops and tillage soil. In summary, reasonable application amounts and methods should be considered when applying DF.

Understanding the environmental impacts of biogas utilization for energy production through life cycle assessment: An action towards reducing emissions

Unlike renewable energy sources, burning fossil fuels has severe environmental impacts, such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate change. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess and compare the environmental impacts of three biogas utilization scenarios for energy production. The life cycle assessment (LCA) method was used to compare (i) biogas combustion in combined heat and power (CHP) unit, (ii) biogas burning in a steam boiler, and (iii) biogas upgrading using pressure swing adsorption (PSA) unit to determine the most sustainable option. The results revealed that the upgrading scenario was the best option, achieving emission savings in 8 out of 10 investigated impact categories. Among them, the emission saving was the highest in the marine aquatic ecotoxicity category (-4276.97 kg 1,4-DB eq./MJ). The CHP scenario was the second-best option, followed by the boiler scenario (worst option), and both had the most beneficial performance in the ozone depletion potential category with 6.29E-08 and 9.88E-08 kg CFC-11-eq./MJ, respectively. The environmental burdens of the boiler scenario were the highest in the marine aquatic ecotoxicity category (248.92 kg 1,4-DB eq./MJ). Although the CHP and boiler scenarios contributed to environmental burdens in all impact categories, they achieved beneficial performances compared to fossil fuel-based systems.

Application of biochar immobilized microorganisms for pollutants removal from wastewater: A review

Microbial immobilization technology (MIT) has been rapidly developed and used to remove pollutants from water/wastewater in recent years, owing to its high stability, rapid reaction rate, and high activity. Microbial immobilization carrier with low cost and high removal efficiency is the key of MIT. Biochar is considered to be an efficient carrier for microbial immobilization because of its high porosity and good adsorption effect, which can provide a habitat for microorganisms. The use of biochar immobilized microorganisms to treat different pollutants in wastewater is a promising treatment method. Compared with the other biological treatment technology, biochar immobilized microorganisms can improve microbial abundance, repeated utilization ratio, microbial metabolic capacity, etc. However, current research on this method is still in its infancy. Little attention has been paid to the interaction mechanisms between biochar and microorganisms, and many studies are only carried out in the laboratory. There are still problems such as difficult recovery after use and secondary pollution caused by residual pollutants after biochar adsorption, which need further clarification. To have comprehensive digestion and an in-depth understanding of biochar immobilized microorganisms technology in wastewater treatment, the wastewater treatment methods based on biochar are firstly summarized in this review. Then the mechanisms of immobilized microorganisms were explored, and the applications of biochar immobilized microorganisms in wastewater were systematically reviewed. Finally, suggestions and perspectives for future research and practical application are put forward.

Performance of Paracoccus pantotrophus MA3 in heterotrophic nitrification-anaerobic denitrification using formic acid as a carbon source

Excess amount of nitrogen in wastewater has caused serious concerns, such as water eutrophication. Paracoccus pantotrophus MA3, a novel isolated strain of heterotrophic nitrification-anaerobic denitrification bacteria, was evaluated for nitrogen removal using formic acid as the sole carbon source. The results showed that the maximum ammonium removal efficiency was observed under the optimum conditions of 26.25 carbon to nitrogen ratio, 3.39% (v/v) inoculation amount, 34.64 °C temperature, and at 180 rpm shaking speed, respectively. In addition, quantitative real-time PCR technique analysis assured that the gene expression level of formate dehydrogenase, formate tetrahydrofolate ligase, 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase, serine hydroxymethyltransferase, respiratory nitrate reductase beta subunit, L-glutamine synthetase, glutamate dehydrogenase, and glutamate synthase were up-regulated compared to the control group, and combined with nitrogen mass balance analysis to conclude that most of the ammonium was removed by assimilation. A small amount of nitrate and nearly no nitrite were accumulated during heterotrophic nitrification. MA3 exhibited significant denitrification potential under anaerobic conditions with a maximum nitrate removal rate of 4.39 mg/L/h, and the only gas produced was N₂. Additionally, 11.50 ± 0.06 mg/L/h of NH₄⁺-N removal rate from biogas slurry was achieved.

Performance evaluation of a solar evaporation system for liquid digestate concentration

The safe and efficient treatment and resource recovery of the large amount of liquid digestate (LD) produced by biogas plants has become an important factor limiting the development of the biogas industry. In this study, a solar evaporation system was developed based on low cost, high efficiency, and high nutrient recovery of LD concentration. The effects of different parameters, including solar radiation, LD flowrate, and daily treatment capacity, on the concentration efficiency, nutrient recovery, and thermal efficiency were investigated. Economic and enviroeconomic analyses were conducted to comprehensively assess the feasibility and environmental benefits of the system for large-scale biogas plants. The results showed that the higher the solar radiation, the higher the air temperature and its saturation vapor pressure, which led to an increase in the concentration efficiency of LD. The LD concentration efficiency can reach up to 43.33% when the average daily solar radiation was 773.08 W/m². High solar radiation also contributed to high LD temperature, leading to an increase in the percentage of free ammonia (NH₃) in the LD, which was not conducive to the recovery of ammonia nitrogen (NH₃N). By increasing the LD flow rate, the heat and mass exchange between air and LD in the spray chamber was enhanced, resulting in higher concentration efficiency. The variation of LD flow rate and daily treatment capacity had little effect on nutrient recovery. The recovery of NH₃N and soluble salts in the concentrated phase could be as high as 78.39% and 84.19%, respectively, when the initial pH of LD was 5, the air flow rate was 0.03 m³/s, and the LD flow rate was 6 L/min. In addition, the economic analysis indicated that the concentration cost of the system in treating a daily LD production of 100 tons was 1.08 USD/ton. The solar evaporation system can reduce CO₂ emissions by 2.40 × 10⁵ tons and earn carbon credits of 3.48 × 10⁶ USD over its lifetime. This study provides a new direction and reference for LD concentration.

Non-thermal plasma irradiated polyaluminum chloride for the heterogeneous adsorption enhancement of Cs+ and Sr2+ in a binary system

The natural ecosystem will continually deteriorate for decades by the leakage of Cs and Sr isotopes. The exploration of the new materials or techniques for the efficient treatment of radioactive wastewater is critically important. In this study, a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) configuration was constructed to operate the non-thermal plasma (NTP). The NTP was incorporated into the synthesis of polyaluminum chloride (PAC) in two different procedures to intensify the synthesis of PAC (NTP-PAC) and enhance the further removal of Cs and Sr from wastewater. The employment of NTP in two procedures both had significantly changed the physicochemical characteristics of PAC materials, which facilitated the further adsorption application of NTP-PAC on the treatment of Cs⁺ and Sr²⁺. Different molecular, morphological, and adsorption characteristics were confirmed to the NTP-PAC materials. The heterogeneous adsorption of the NTP-PAC can be appropriately fitted by both the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and the Elovich model. Both physisorption and chemisorption reaction mechanisms were ensured for the heterogeneous adsorption of the NTP-PAC material towards Cs⁺ and Sr²⁺, which guaranteed the excellent adsorption performance of NTP-PAC materials compared to PAC. The electron collisions caused by NTP with alum pulp created highly reactive growth precursors and intensified the nucleation and hydrolysis polymerization of PAC. The employment of NTP explicitly broadens the reaction pathways between PAC and cationic contaminants in the aqueous environment, which expands the application area of PAC materials in environmental sustainability.

Heavy Metals and Pesticides Toxicity in Agricultural Soil and Plants: Ecological Risks and Human Health Implications

Environmental problems have always received immense attention from scientists. Toxicants pollution is a critical environmental concern that has posed serious threats to human health and agricultural production. Heavy metals and pesticides are top of the list of environmental toxicants endangering nature. This review focuses on the toxic effect of heavy metals (cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn)) and pesticides (insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides) adversely influencing the agricultural ecosystem (plant and soil) and human health. Furthermore, heavy metals accumulation and pesticide residues in soils and plants have been discussed in detail. In addition, the characteristics of contaminated soil and plant physiological parameters have been reviewed. Moreover, human diseases caused by exposure to heavy metals and pesticides were also reported. The bioaccumulation, mechanism of action, and transmission pathways of both heavy metals and pesticides are emphasized. In addition, the bioavailability in soil and plant uptake of these contaminants has also been considered. Meanwhile, the synergistic and antagonistic interactions between heavy metals and pesticides and their combined toxic effects have been discussed. Previous relevant studies are included to cover all aspects of this review. The information in this review provides deep insights into the understanding of environmental toxicants and their hazardous effects.
