Effective immobilization of Bacillus subtilis in chitosan-sodium alginate composite carrier for ammonia removal from anaerobically digested swine wastewater

Enhanced nutrients removal from low C/N ratio rural sewage by embedding heterotrophic nitrifying bacteria and activated alumina in a tidal flow constructed wetland

Rural sewage treatment facilitates nitrogen and phosphorus removal yet can be costly. To address this challenge, a cost-effective embedding material mainly consisting of heterotrophic nitrifying bacteria, activated alumina (AA), and a solid carbon source (HPMC) was applied to a tidal flow constructed wetlands (TFCWs); aimed at stable nitrogen and phosphorus removal under low carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratios. The TFCWs could be shortened to 16 d of startup duration time compared with the control group; and improved the ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) removal efficiencies to 98 %, 93 %, and 68 %, respectively. Also, effluent NH4+-N, TN, and TP in the enhanced TFCWs could be stable at 0.52 ± 0.18, 1.23 ± 0.45, and 0.75 ± 0.25 mg/L, respectively. Microbial community analysis revealed that AA and HPMC were enriched Pseudomonas sp., which potentially accelerated the NH4+-N assimilation pathway and phosphate biological removal. Embedding materials-TFCWs can provide new solutions for integrated rural sewage technology.

Co-utilization of microalgae and heterotrophic microorganisms improves wastewater treatment efficiency

Wastewater treatment using the activated sludge method requires a large amount of electricity for aeration. Therefore, wastewater treatment using co-culture systems of microalgae and heterotrophic microorganisms, which do not require aeration, has attracted attention as an energy-saving alternative to the method. In this study, we investigated different combinations of microalgae and heterotrophic microorganisms to improve the efficiency of wastewater treatment. Three types of microalgae and five heterotrophic microorganisms were used in combination for wastewater treatment. The combination of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii NIES-2238 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae SH-4 showed the highest wastewater treatment efficiency. Using this combination for artificial wastewater treatment, the removal rates of total organic carbon, PO43-, and NH4+ reached 80%, 93%, and 63%, respectively, after 18 h of treatment. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to show that a combination of green algae and yeast improves the efficiency of wastewater treatment. Transcriptome analysis revealed that the combined wastewater treatment altered the expression of 1371 and 692 genes in C. reinhardtii and S. cerevisiae, respectively. One of the main reasons for the improved wastewater treatment performance of the combination of green algae and yeast was the increased expression of genes related to the uptake of phosphate and ammonium ions in the green algae. As both the green algae C. reinhardtii and the yeast S. cerevisiae are highly safe microorganisms, the establishment of their effective combination for wastewater treatment is highly significant. A new particle material (CTS/ZMS) for removing ammonia and nitrate from groundwater: performance and regeneration

A new type of particle material modified zeolite molecular sieve (CTS/ZMS) is developed for the simultaneous removal of NH4+-N and NO3--N in groundwater. To ascertain the optimal performance of CTS/ZMS, a custom central composite design (CCD) was utilised to assess the operational parameters (dosage and contact time) of CTS/ZMS composites. Batch experiments were carried out to determine the removal efficiency and adsorption capacity across varying pH values (3-12) and temperatures (5 °C to 30 °C). The results of response surface three-dimensional analysis showed the removal efficiencies of nitrate and ammonium ions are the highest at a dosage of 5.5 g/L of CTS/ZMS adsorbents and adsorption time of 6.25 h and are respectively observed to be 40%, and 80.2%. Adsorption thermodynamic analysis (ΔG0<0, ΔH0>0, ΔS0>0) revealed ammonia and nitrate adsorption on CTS/ZMS composites are spontaneous and feasible at high temperatures. SEM, EDS, BET, FTIR and XPS were employed for analyzing the adsorption mechanism of CTS/ZMS for NH4+-N and NO3--N and included mostly ion exchange, electrostatic interaction, and hydrogen bonding. Different regeneration methods including water regeneration, thermal regeneration, and chemical regeneration for CTS/ZMS composites were analyzed to evaluate the removal efficiency of NH4+-N and NO3--N. The saturated CTS/ZMS composites regenerated by first 1 mol/L NaCl solution, followed by 1 mol/L Na2CO3 solution demonstrated the highest ammonia and nitrate removal efficiency. The experimental data indicated pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich model explained well the ammonia and nitrate adsorption process of regenerated CTS/ZMS composites. According to the Langmuir model, the regenerated CTS/ZMS can adsorb a maximum of 0.92 mg/g of ammonia and 1.98 mg/g of nitrate. The results demonstrate that CTS/ZMS composites serve as a potentially efficient adsorbent for removing ammonia and ions from groundwater. This study offers technical guidelines and support for the future production and application of CTS/ZMS.

Surfactant-mediated bio-manufacture: A unique strategy for promoting microbial biochemicals production

Biochemicals are widely used in the medicine and food industries and are more efficient and safer than synthetic chemicals. The amphipathic surfactants can interact with the microorganisms and embed the extracellular metabolites, which induce microbial metabolites secretion and biosynthesis, performing an attractive prospect of promoting the biochemical production. However, the commonness and differences of surfactant-mediated bio-manufacture in various fields are largely unexplored. Accordingly, this review comprehensively summarized the properties of surfactants, different application scenarios of surfactant-meditated bio-manufacture, and the mechanism of surfactants increasing metabolites production. Various biochemical productions such as pigments, amino acids, and alcohols could be enhanced using the cloud point and the micelles of surfactants. Besides, the amphiphilicity of surfactants also promoted the utilization of fermentation substrates, especially lignocellulose and waste sludge, by microorganisms, indirectly increasing the metabolites production. The increase in target metabolites production was attributed to the surfactants changing the permeability and composition of the cell membrane, hence improving the secretion ability of microorganisms. Moreover, surfactants could regulate the energy metabolism, the redox state and metabolic flow in microorganisms, which induced target metabolites synthesis. This review aimed to broaden the application fields of surfactants and provide novel insights into the production of microbial biochemicals.

Response surface methodology for process optimization in livestock wastewater treatment: A review

With increasing demand for meat and dairy products, the volume of wastewater generated from the livestock industry has become a significant environmental concern. The treatment of livestock wastewater (LWW) is a challenging process that involves removing nutrients, organic matter, pathogens, and other pollutants from livestock manure and urine. In response to this challenge, researchers have developed and investigated different biological, physical, and chemical treatment technologies that perform better upon optimization. Optimization of LWW handling processes can help improve the efficacy and sustainability of treatment systems as well as minimize environmental impacts and associated costs. Response surface methodology (RSM) as an optimization approach can effectively optimize operational parameters that affect process performance. This review article summarizes the main steps of RSM, recent applications of RSM in LWW treatment, highlights the advantages and limitations of this technique, and provides recommendations for future research and practice, including its cost-effectiveness, accuracy, and ability to improve treatment efficiency.

Preparation and characterization of EI-Co/Zr@AC and the mechanisms underlying its removal for atrazine in aqueous solution

Atrazine, a widely used herbicide in agriculture, is detrimental to both the ecological environment and human health owing to its extensive use, poor degradability, and biotoxicity. The technology commonly used to remove atrazine from water is activated carbon adsorption, but it has the problems of difficult recovery, secondary contamination, and a low removal rate. To efficiently remove atrazine from agricultural wastewater, in this study, a new environmental material, embedding immobilization (EI)-Co- and Zr-modified activated carbon powder (Co/Zr@AC), was prepared by immobilizing the bimetallic Co/Zr@AC via EI technique and employed to remove atrazine. When preparing EI-Co/Zr@AC, the single-factor experiment was conducted and determined the optimal preparation conditions: sodium alginate 2.5% (wt), calcium chloride 4.0% (wt), Co/Zr@AC 1.0% (wt), and bentonite 2.0% (wt). The prepared EI-Co/Zr@AC has a three-dimensional mesh structure and many pores and also possesses good mass transfer performance and mechanical properties. The removal efficiency by EI-Co/Zr@AC for the removal of 5.0 mg/L atrazine from 50 mL was 94.1% at pH 7.0 and 25°C, with an EI-Co/Zr@AC dosage of 0.8 g. The mechanistic study showed that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model could describe the removal process better than the pseudo-first-order kinetic model, and the Freundlich isotherm model fit better than other isotherm models. Additionally, the synthesized EI-Co/Zr@AC spheres demonstrated good reusability, with the atrazine removal rate remaining 70.4% after five cycles, and the mechanical properties of the spheres were stable.

Modified alginate materials for wastewater treatment: Application prospects

Sodium alginate is a natural macromolecule widely used because of its abundance, low cost of acquisition, and rich hydroxyl and carboxyl groups in the matrix. The physical modification of sodium alginate can be made by blending it with polymer materials. The so-yielded alginate complex is commonly unstable in an aqueous environment due to alginate backbones' high hydrophilicity. The chemical modification can remove its hydrophilic groups and introduce special functional groups or polymers onto the alginate backbones to provide excess reaction sites for specific reactions and effective complexation sites for accommodating antibiotics, dyes, heavy metal ions, and radioactive elements. Sodium alginate has been used in water treatment engineering under revised modification protocols. This article also reviews the latest modification protocols for sodium alginate and outlines the novel application of the modified materials. The limitations of modified sodium alginate materials are described, and research prospects are put forward.

Reutilization of scrap tyre for the enhanced removal of phthalate esters from water: immobilization performance, interaction mechanisms, and application

Waste scrap tyre as microbial immobilization matrix enhanced degradation of phthalate esters (PAEs), di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and diethyl phthalate (DEP). The hybrid (physical adsorption and microbial immobilization) degradation process performance of scrap tyres was examined for the PAEs degradation. The scrap tyre was shown with competitive adsorption capacity toward PAEs, influenced by pH, temperature, dosage of adsorbent (scrap tyre), and concentration of PAE. The primary adsorption mechanism for tyres toward PAEs was considered hydrophobic. The immobilization of previously isolated Bacillus sp. MY156 on tyre surface significantly enhanced PAEs degradation as well as bacterial growth. The enzymatic activity results implied immobilization promoted dehydrogenase activity and decreased esterase activity. The cell surface response during PAEs degradation, in terms of morphological observation, FTIR and XRD analyses, and extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) release, was further assessed to better understand the interactions between microorganisms and tyre surface. Waste scrap tyres could be a promising potential candidate to be reused for sustainable environmental management, including contaminants removal.

Study on modified SA-H3BO3 immobilization microorganism method for wastewater treatment in seawater recirculating aquaculture system

The sodium alginate-H₃BO₃ (SA-H₃BO₃) is traditionally used as bioremediation method for wastewater treatment in recirculating aquaculture system. Even though this method has many advantages (e.g., high cell loading) for immobilization, the remove of ammonium is not very effective. In this study, a modified method was built by adding polyvinyl alcohol and activated carbon into SA solution, and then crosslinked with saturated H₃BO₃-CaCl₂ solution for creating new beads. Moreover, response surface methodology was utilized for optimizing the immobilization based on Box-Behnken design. The removal rate of ammonium in 96 h was taken as the primary performance criterion to characterize the biological activity of immobilized microorganisms (i.e., Chloyella pyrenoidosa, Spirulina platensis, Nitrifying bacteria, and Photosynthetic bacteria). Based on the results, the optimal parameter of immobilization as follows: the concentration of SA was 1.46%, the concentration of polyvinyl alcohol was 0.23%, the concentration of activated carbon was 0.11%, the crosslinking time was 29.33 h, and the pH was 6.6.

Enhanced crude oil degradation by remodeling of crude oil-contaminated soil microbial community structure using sodium alginate/graphene oxide/Bacillus C5 immobilized pellets

Bioaugmentation (BA) of oil-contaminated soil by immobilized microorganisms is considered to be a promising technology. However, available high-efficiency microbial agents remain very limited. Therefore, we prepared a SA/GO/C5 immobilized gel pellets by embedding the highly efficient crude oil degrading bacteria Bacillus C5 in the SA/GO composite material. The optimum preparation conditions of SA/GO/C5 immobilized gel pellets were: SA 3.0%, GO 25.0 μg/mL, embedding amount of C5 6%, water bath temperature of 50°C, CaCl₂ solution concentration 3% and cross-linking time 20 h. BA experiments were carried out on crude oil contaminated soil to explore the removal effect of SA/GO/C5 immobilized pellets. The results showed that the SA/GO/C5 pellets exhibited excellent mechanical strength and specific surface area, which facilitated the attachment and growth of the Bacillus C5. Compared with free bacteria C5, the addition of SA/GO/C5 significantly promoted the removal of crude oil in soil, reaching 64.92% after 30 d, which was 2.1 times the removal rate of C5. The addition of SA/GO/C5 promoted the abundance of soil exogenous Bacillus C5 and indigenous crude oil degrading bacteria Alcanivorax and Marinobacter. In addition, the enrichment of hydrocarbon degradation-related functional abundance was predicted by PICRUSt2 in the SA/GO/C5 treatment group. This study demonstrated that SA/GO/C5 is an effective method for remediating crude oil-contaminated soil, providing a basis and option for immobilized microorganisms bioaugmentation to remediate organic contaminated soil.

A novel chitosan-biochar immobilized microorganism strategy to enhance bioremediation of crude oil in soil

The chitosan-biochar composite is a clean and environmentally friendly immobilized microorganisms carrier. In this study, the chitosan-biochar composite as a carrier to immobilize a compound microbial agent contained Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus licheniformis, and investigated its role in the remediation of oil-contaminated soil. When using 1% (v/v) acetic acid, 3% (m/v) chitosan solution, 0.1% biochar, 4% (v/v) NaOH solution, freeze-drying 6 h, the optimal chitosan-biochar composite material could be obtained. The specific surfacearea of the material increased to 1.725 m²/g and the average pore size also increased from 130.2260 nm to 165.2980 nm after the addition of biochar through the analysis of specific surface area and pore size, which enlarged the contact area of microorganisms and crude oil with the material. SEM showed that the bacterial successfully adhered to the surface and internal of the material. Using FTIR, the results showed that the synthesis of composite carrier material was the covalent combination of -NH₂ on chitosan and -COOH on biochar, forming a new chemical bond -NH-CO-. After 60 days of remediation of oil-contaminated soil, the removal rate of crude oil by chitosan-biochar composite immobilized microorganism method was 45.82%, which was 21.26% higher than that of natural remediation. Simultaneously, several oil-degrading bacteria increased at genus level, including Nocardioides (26.79%-33.09%), Bacillus (3.01%-4.10%), Dietzia (1.84%-5.56%), Pseudomonas (0-0.78%), among which Pseudomonas belongs to exogenous bacteria. The results indicated that the chitosan-biochar composite material has high application value in removing crude oil, and further provides a new strategy for bioremediation of oil-contaminated soil.

The role of immobilized quorum sensing strain in promoting biofilm formation of Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor during long-term stable operation

Quorum sensing (QS) signaling plays a significant role in the natural regulation of biofilm formation. Multiple species QS systems in wastewater treatment processes have received significant attention in recent years and this study presents a long-term analysis of QS signaling, bacterial structures and extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) during biofilm formation, detachment and reformation processes. Six types of Acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs) were found to be closely related to different phases of biofilm development, with both QS and quorum quenching (QQ) strains being identified as drivers of various biofilm phases and 10 strains presenting a close relationship with AHLs (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, QS strain Sphingomonas rubra was immobilized and added into reactor systems, resulting in significant increase in AHL content, EPS production, and adhesion strength of biofilm (p < 0.05), which might promote biofilm formation processes during long-term stable operation. This study provides a potentially simple and economical way to improve activity and stability of MBBR in complex wastewater systems.

Six complex microbial inoculants for removing ammonia nitrogen from waters

To determine the effect of microbial inoculants on the removal of ammonia nitrogen (NH₄ ⁺ -N), six different complex microbial inoculants were studied. In this study, their effectiveness on NH₄ ⁺ -N removal was compared, and their microbial community composition was determined. High-throughput sequencing results showed that Proteobacteria and Firmicutes were the dominant phyla in six samples. Before the reaction, Bacillus, Cyanobacteria, and Mitochondria genera were the dominant genera. The dominant genera were significantly different after the reaction with the addition of bacterial agents. The six water samples were Massilia, Escherichia-Shigella, Brevibacillus, Mitsuaria, Bacillus, and Ralstonia. Among the six complex microbial inoculants, "Gandu nitrifying bacteria (NR₄ )" have the best removal effect on NH₄ ⁺ -N. In addition, the removal effect of six different bacterial agents on chemical oxygen demand (COD) was compared. The results showed that "Bilaiqing ammonia nitrogen removal bacteria agent (NR₅ )" has the best removal effect on COD. Single-factor experiments suggested that the optimal conditions for NR₄ bacteria were pH 7, 30°C, 1.0 g/L of bacterial agent dosage and a wide range of NH₄ ⁺ -N from 30 to 300 mg/L. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The nitrogen removal effects of six different microbial agents were compared. High-throughput sequencing provides important insights into the study of ammonia nitrogen removal by microbial communities. Analysis of six different complex bacterial agents by high-throughput sequencing. The relative abundance of microorganisms is not proportional to the ability to remove NH₄ ⁺ -N Good application effect in urban landscape water body.

A silk fibroin/chitosan/nanohydroxyapatite biomimetic bone scaffold combined with autologous concentrated growth factor promotes the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs and repair of critical bone defects

Purpose

With the goal of increasing the translational efficiency of bone tissue engineering for practical clinical applications, biomimetic composite scaffolds combined with autologous endogenous growth factors for repairing bone defects have become a current research hotspot. In this study, we prepared a silk fibroin/chitosan/nanohydroxyapatite (SF/CS/nHA) composite biomimetic scaffold and then combined it with autologous concentrated growth factor (CGF) to explore the effect of this combination on the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and the efficiency of repairing critical radial defects.

Methods

Three kinds of SF/CS/nHA composite biomimetic scaffolds with mass fractions of 3%, 4%, and 5% were prepared by vacuum freeze-drying and chemical cross-linking methods, and the characteristics of the scaffolds were evaluated. In vitro, BMSCs were seeded on SF/CS/nHA scaffolds, and then CGF was added. The morphology and proliferation of BMSCs were evaluated by live-dead staining, phalloidin staining, and CCK-8 assays. ALP staining, alizarin red staining, cellular immunofluorescence, RT-PCR, and Western blotting were used to detect the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs. In vivo, a rabbit radius critical bone defect model was constructed, and the SF/CS/nHA-BMSC scaffold cell complex combined with CGF was implanted. The effect on bone defect repair was evaluated by 3D CT scanning, HE staining, Masson staining, and immunohistochemistry.

Results

The characteristics of 4% SF/CS/nHA were the most suitable for repairing bone defects. In vitro, the SF/CS/nHA combined CGF group showed better adhesion, cell morphology, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs than the other groups (P < 0.05 for all). In vivo imaging examination and histological analysis demonstrated that the SF/CS/nHA scaffold combined with CGF had better efficiency in bone defect repair than the other scaffolds (P < 0.05 for all).

Conclusions

A SF/CS/nHA composite biomimetic bone scaffold combined with autologous CGF promoted the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs in vitro and improved the repair efficiency of critical bone defects in vivo. This combination may have the potential for clinical translation due to its excellent biocompatibility.

Effects of Free or Immobilized Bacterium Stenotrophomonas acidaminiphila Y4B on Glyphosate Degradation Performance and Indigenous Microbial Community Structure

The overuse of glyphosate has resulted in serious environmental contamination. Thus, effective techniques to remove glyphosate from the environment are required. Herein, we isolated a novel strain Stenotrophomonas acidaminiphila Y4B, which completely degraded glyphosate and its major metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA). Y4B degraded glyphosate over a broad concentration range (50-800 mg L^-1), with a degradation efficiency of over 98% within 72 h (50 mg L^-1). Y4B degraded glyphosate via the AMPA pathway by cleaving the C-N bond, followed by degradation of AMPA and subsequent metabolism. Y4B demonstrated strong competitiveness and substantially accelerated the degradation of glyphosate in different soils, degrading 71.93 and 89.81% of glyphosate (400 mg kg^-1) within 5 days in sterile and nonsterile soils, respectively. The immobilized cells of Y4B were more efficient than their free cells and they displayed excellent biodegradation efficiency in a sediment-water system. Taken together, Y4B is an ideal degrader for the bioremediation of glyphosate-contaminated sites.

Alginate-modified biochar derived from rice husk waste for improvement uptake performance of lead in wastewater

In this work, alginate-modified biochar derived from rice husk waste was synthesized using a simple process. The modified biochar (MBC) and rice husk biochar (RhBC) were investigated for removing Pb (II) ions in wastewater. The BET result displayed significantly improved specific surface area of MBC up to 120 m²/g along with a total pore volume of 0.653 cm³/g. FTIR spectrums presented the higher oxygen-contained functional groups of MBC as compared to RhBC, resulting in increasing adsorption capacity of Pb (II). MBC had higher adsorption capacity (112.3 mg/g) and faster removal rate (0.0081 g mg^-1 min^-1) than those of RhBC (41.2 mg/g and 0.00025 g mg^-1 min^-1). Modified RhBC can remove more than 99% of Pb (II) from wastewater and it could be utilized for three cycles with a removal performance of over 90%. In addition, the Pb adsorption mechanism by using MBC was proposed and the practical application of MBC for the treatment of wastewater in Vietnam was discussed.

Self-floating capsule of algicidal bacteria Bacillus sp. HL and its performance in the dissolution of Microcystis aeruginosa

Algicidal bacteria is considered as an efficient and environmentally friendly approach to suppress Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa). However, algicidal bacteria in natural water is limited during the practical application due to the interference of external factors and the low reuse capability. In this study, a bio-degradation capsule for M. aeruginosa is prepared by bio-compatible sodium alginate (SA) compositing with eco-friendly ethyl cellulose (EC) to improve the property and reuse capability of algicidal bacteria. Bacterial strain HL was well immobilized and the capsule was obtained with 2% of SA, 3% of calcium chloride (CaCl₂) and 3% of EC. It has been proved that capsules immobilizing bacteria HL shows considerable advantage over traditional bio-treatment systems (free-living bacteria) and good reusable performance. A better algicidal rate of 77.67% ± 1.14% at 7th day was obtained with the use of capsule embedding 50 mL of algicidal bacteria, enhanced by 11.05% comparing with same amount of free-living bacteria. Moreover, the algicidal rate of M. aeruginosa still reached 68.57% ± 2.88% after three times repetitive use. The effect of capsules on the fluorescence and antioxidant system of M. aeruginosa indicated that the photosystems were irreversibly damaged and the antioxidant response of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) were significantly induced. Overall, capsules prepared in this study can provide a desirable environment for algicidal bacteria HL and ensure algicidal bacteria to in-situ work well in inhibiting booms of algae.

Construction and comparison of synthetic microbial consortium system (SMCs) by non-living or living materials immobilization and application in acetochlor degradation

The microbial degradation of pesticides by pure or mixed microbial cultures has been thoroughly explored, however, they are still difficult to apply in real environmental remediation. Here, we constructed a synthetic microbial consortium system (SMCs) through the immobilization technology by non-living or living materials to improve the acetochlor degradation efficiency. Rhodococcus sp. T3-1, Delftia sp. T3-6 and Sphingobium sp. MEA3-1 were isolated for the SMCs construction. The free-floating consortium with the composition ratio of 1:2:2 (Rhodococcus sp. T3-1, Delftia sp. T3-6 and Sphingobium sp. MEA3-1) demonstrated 94.8% degradation of acetochlor, and the accumulation of intermediate metabolite 2-methyl-6-ethylaniline was decreased by 3 times. The immobilized consortium using composite materials showed synergistic effects on the acetochlor degradation with maximum degradation efficiency of 97.81%. In addition, a novel immobilization method with the biofilm of Myxococcus xanthus DK1622 as living materials was proposed. The maximum 96.62% degradation was obtained in non-trophic media. Furthermore, the immobilized SMCs showed significantly enhanced environmental robustness, reusability and stability. The results indicate the promising application of the immobilization methods using composite and living materials in pollutant-contaminated environments.

Application of biochar immobilized microorganisms for pollutants removal from wastewater: A review

Microbial immobilization technology (MIT) has been rapidly developed and used to remove pollutants from water/wastewater in recent years, owing to its high stability, rapid reaction rate, and high activity. Microbial immobilization carrier with low cost and high removal efficiency is the key of MIT. Biochar is considered to be an efficient carrier for microbial immobilization because of its high porosity and good adsorption effect, which can provide a habitat for microorganisms. The use of biochar immobilized microorganisms to treat different pollutants in wastewater is a promising treatment method. Compared with the other biological treatment technology, biochar immobilized microorganisms can improve microbial abundance, repeated utilization ratio, microbial metabolic capacity, etc. However, current research on this method is still in its infancy. Little attention has been paid to the interaction mechanisms between biochar and microorganisms, and many studies are only carried out in the laboratory. There are still problems such as difficult recovery after use and secondary pollution caused by residual pollutants after biochar adsorption, which need further clarification. To have comprehensive digestion and an in-depth understanding of biochar immobilized microorganisms technology in wastewater treatment, the wastewater treatment methods based on biochar are firstly summarized in this review. Then the mechanisms of immobilized microorganisms were explored, and the applications of biochar immobilized microorganisms in wastewater were systematically reviewed. Finally, suggestions and perspectives for future research and practical application are put forward.

Synergistic effect of chitosan-based sludge aggregates CS@NGS inoculum accelerated the start-up of biofilm reactor treating aquaculture effluent: Insights into performance, microbial characteristics, and functional genes

The moving bed bioreactor (MBBR) process has drawn more attention as a promising biological wastewater treatment process. Nevertheless, achieving quick start-up and microbial biofilm formation remains a significant challenge. Consequently, the present study investigated a novel chitosan-based natural sludge (CS@NGS) seeding strategy for the accelerated start-up of MBBR. Three identical bioreactors were employed; the first bioreactor was without sludge seed as the control (BR1), the second was inoculated only with sludge (BR2), and the third was inoculated with CS@NGS according to the proposed seeding method (BR3). All bioreactors were utilised to treat simulated recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) effluent. Resultantly, the CS@NGS shortened the start-up period from over twenty to seven days due to the enhanced initial microbial adhesion and biofilm formation. Under optimal conditions, the ammonium removal in BR3 approached 100%, which was relatively higher than BR2 (96.35 ± 1.12%) and BR1 (92.56 ± 2.17%). Moreover, a low nitrite accumulation was exhibited in the effluents, approximately ≤0.03 mg L^-1. The process performance correlated positively with core bacteria from the genera Nakamurella, Hyphomicrobium, Nitrospira, Paenarthrobacter, Rhodococcus, and Stenotrophobacter. The quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) results demonstrated that the CS@NGS enhanced the expressions of amoA, nxrB, nirK, nirS, narG, and napA nitrogen metabolism-related functional genes to varying degrees. The present study findings can assist the rapid start-up of aquaculture biofilters utilised to solve high nitrite and ammonia accumulation in recirculated water from industrial RAS.

A review of ammonia removal using a biofilm-based reactor and its challenges

Extensive growth of industries leads to uncontrolled ammonia releases to environment. This can result in significant degradation of the aquatic ecology as well as significant health concerns for humans. Knowing the mechanism of ammonia elimination is the simplest approach to comprehending it. Ammonia has been commonly converted to less hazardous substances either in the form of nitrate or nitrogen gas. Ammonia has been converted into nitrite by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and further reduced to nitrate by nitrite-oxidizing bacteria in aerobic conditions. Denitrification takes place in an anoxic phase and nitrate is converted into nitrogen gas. It is challenging to remove ammonia by employing technologies that do not incur particularly high costs. Thus, this review paper is focused on biofilm reactors that utilize the nitrification process. Many research publications and patents on biofilm wastewater treatment have been published. However, only a tiny percentage of these projects are for full-scale applications, and the majority of the work was completed within the last few decades. The physicochemical approaches such as ammonia adsorption, coagulation-flocculation, and membrane separation, as well as conventional biological treatments including activated sludge, microalgae, and bacteria biofilm, are briefly addressed in this review paper. The effectiveness of biofilm reactors in removing ammonia was compared, and the microbes that effectively remove ammonia were thoroughly discussed. Overall, biofilm reactors can remove up to 99.7% ammonia from streams with a concentration in range of 16-900 mg/L. As many challenges were identified for ammonia removal using biofilm at a commercial scale, this study offers future perspectives on how to address the most pressing biofilm issues. This review may also improve our understanding of biofilm technologies for the removal of ammonia as well as polishing unit in wastewater treatment plants for the water reuse and recycling, supporting the circular economy concept.

Lead adsorption and antibacterial activity using modified magnetic biochar/sodium alginate nanocomposite

Biochar is one of the most promising wastewater treatment materials. As shown in the Scanning Electron Micrograph, the magnetic biochar (BC) cross-linked glutaraldehyde (G) with sodium alginate (SA) (BC-G-SA) nanocomposite formed with uniform particle size without aggregation, and an X-Ray Diffraction study revealed that the BC-G-SA nanocomposite has an amorphous structure. The BC-G-SA nanocomposite enhanced the microwave adsorption process for Pb (II). The maximum metal capacity value was obtained using the microwave adsorption technique at pH 5.0 and contact time 20 s for Pb (II) at medium and low microwave power (940 and 1400 μmol g^-1, respectively). Pb (II) adsorption isotherm follows a pseudo-second-order model. Also, the BC-G-SA nanocomposite effectively inhibited bacterial growth throughout the growth kinetics experiment. BC-G-SA inhibited the growth of S. aureus at a MIC of 200 g mL^-1, whereas L. monocytogenes had a MIC of 200 g mL^-1. The MIC values for E. faecalis and E. faecium were significantly lower (50 and 100 g mL^-1, respectively).

Sustainable additives for the regulation of NH3 concentration and emissions during the production of biomethane and biohydrogen: A review

This study reviews the recent advances and innovations in the application of additives to improve biomethane and biohydrogen production. Biochar, nanostructured materials, novel biopolymers, zeolites, and clays are described in terms of chemical composition, properties and impact on anaerobic digestion, dark fermentation, and photofermentation. These additives can have both a simple physical effect of microbial adhesion and growth, and a more complex biochemical impact on the regulation of key parameters for CH₄ and H₂ production: in this study, these effects in different experimental conditions are reviewed and described. The considered parameters include pH, volatile fatty acids (VFA), C:N ratio, and NH₃; additionally, the global impact on the total production yield of biogas and bioH₂ is reviewed. A special focus is given to NH₃, due to its strong inhibition effect towards methanogens, and its contribution to digestate quality, leaching, and emissions into the atmosphere.

Chitosan coated Fe3O4@Cd-MOF microspheres as an effective adsorbent for the removal of the amoxicillin from aqueous solution

In this work, for the first time, a new magnetic cadmium-based MOFs (Fe₃O₄@Cd-MOF) was successfully synthesized in a green way and then modified with chitosan (CS) in the microsphere form (Fe₃O₄@Cd-MOF@CS). The obtained materials were fully characterized by several techniques. In the following, the efficiency of Fe₃O₄@Cd-MOF@CS was explored for the removal of amoxicillin (AMX). The outcome of the adsorption study showed that the removal efficiency is affected by CS and reaches its optimum at pH 8 and contact time of 240 min. Under optimized conditions, over 75% of AMX was removed. The kinetic and the isotherm of the adsorption were fit with the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm respectively. Eventually, the maximum adsorption capacity was obtained ~103.09 mg/g. Interestingly, these findings convince that the newly prepared Fe₃O₄@Cd-MOF@CS could be proposed as a promising magnetically separable adsorbent for antibiotic contaminants removal from the aqueous solution.
