Antimony reduction by a non-conventional sulfate reducer with simultaneous bioenergy production in microbial fuel cells

Refining microbial potentiometric sensor performance with unique cathodic catalytic properties for targeted application scenarios

Traditional microbial electrochemical sensors encounter challenges due to their inherent complexity. In response to these challenges, the microbial potentiometric sensor (MPS) technology was introduced, featuring a straightforward high-impedance measurement circuit tailored for environmental monitoring. Nonetheless, the practical implementation of conventional MPS is constrained by issues such as the exposure of the reference electrode to the monitored water and the absence of methodologies to stimulate microbial metabolism. In this study, our objective was to enhance MPS performance by imbuing it with unique cathodic catalytic properties, specifically tailored for distinct application scenarios. Notably, the anodic region served as the sensing element, with both the cathodic region and reference electrode physically isolated from the analyzed water sample. In the realm of organic monitoring, the sensor without Pt/C coated in the cathodic region exhibited a faster response time (1 h) and lower detection limits (1 mg L-1 BOD, 1 mM acetic acid). Conversely, when monitoring toxic substances, the sensor with Pt/C showcased a lower detection limit (0.004% formaldehyde), while the Pt/C-free sensor demonstrated superior reusability. The sensor with Pt/C displayed a heightened anode biofilm thickness and coverage, predominantly composed of Rhodococcus. In conclusion, this study introduces simple, cost-effective, and tailorable biosensors holding substantial promise for water quality monitoring.

Assessing the effect of sulfate on the anaerobic oxidation of methane coupled with Cr(VI) bioreduction by sludge characteristic and metagenomics analysis

Methane-driven hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) reduction in a microbial fuel cell (MFC) has attracted much attention. However, whether the presence of sulfate (SO42-) affects the reduction of Cr(VI) is still lacking in systematic studies. This study involved constructing a MFC-granular sludge (MFC-GS) coupling system with dissolved methane (CH4) was used as the electron donor to investigate the effect of SO42- on Cr(VI) bioreduction, sludge characteristic, and functional metabolic mechanisms. When the SO42- concentration was 10 mg/L, the average removal rate of Cr(VI) in the anaerobic stage decreased to the lowest value (22.25 ± 2.06%). Adding 10 mg/L SO42- obviously inhibited the electrochemical performance of the system. Increasing SO42- concentration weakened the fluorescence peaks of tryptophan and aromatic proteins in the extracellular polymeric substance of sludge. Under the influence of SO42-, Methanothrix_soehngenii decreased from 14.44% to 5.89%. The relative abundance of methane metabolic was down-regulated from 1.47% to 0.98%, while the sulfur metabolic was up-regulated from 0.09% to 0.21% when SO42- was added. These findings provided some reference for the treatment of wastewater containing Cr(VI) and SO42- complex pollutants in the MFC-GS coupling system.

Research progress on using biological cathodes in microbial fuel cells for the treatment of wastewater containing heavy metals

Various types of electroactive microorganisms can be enriched to form biocathodes that reduce charge-transfer resistance, thereby accelerating electron transfer to heavy metal ions with high redox potentials in microbial fuel cells. Microorganisms acting as biocatalysts on a biocathode can reduce the energy required for heavy metal reduction, thereby enabling the biocathode to achieve a lower reduction onset potential. Thus, when such heavy metals replace oxygen as the electron acceptor, the valence state and morphology of the heavy metals change under the reduction effect of the biocathode, realizing the high-efficiency treatment of heavy metal wastewater. This study reviews the mechanisms, primary influencing factors (e.g., electrode material, initial concentration of heavy metals, pH, and electrode potential), and characteristics of the microbial community of biocathodes and discusses the electron distribution and competition between microbial electrodes and heavy metals (electron acceptors) in biocathodes. Biocathodes reduce the electrochemical overpotential in heavy metal reduction, permitting more electrons to be used. Our study will advance the scientific understanding of the electron transport mechanism of biocathodes and provide theoretical support for the use of biocathodes to purify heavy metal wastewater.

Antimony (Sb) pollution control by coagulation and membrane filtration in water/wastewater treatment: A comprehensive review

Antimony (Sb) pollution in the water environment caused by the large-scale mining of Sb ore and the wide use of Sb-containing products seriously endangers human health and poses a great threat to the ecological environment. Coagulation is one of the most cost-effective technologies for Sb pollution control in water/wastewater treatment and has been widely used. However, a comprehensive understanding of Sb pollution control by coagulation, from fundamental research to practical applications, is lacking. In this work, based on the current status of Sb pollution in the water environment, a critical review of the Sb removal performance and mechanism by coagulation and related combined processes was carried out. The influencing factors of Sb removal performance by coagulation are introduced in detail. The internal mechanisms and improvement strategies of Sb removal by oxidation/reduction-coagulation and coagulation-membrane filtration technologies are emphasized. Moreover, given the development of Sb-removing coagulants and the resource utilization of Sb-containing sludge, future perspectives of coagulation for Sb removal are discussed. As the first review in this field, this work will illuminate avenues of basic research and practical applications for Sb and Sb-like pollution control in water/wastewater treatment.
