Abstract
Saltwater stands as the most prevalent liquid on Earth. Consequently, substantial interest has been directed toward its characterization, both as an independent system and as a solvent for complex structures such as biomacromolecules. In the last few decades, special emphasis was placed on the investigation of the hydration properties of ions for the fundamental role they play in numerous chemical processes. In this study, we employed multi-wavelength Raman spectroscopy to examine the hydration shell surrounding bromide ions in solutions of simple electrolytes, specifically lithium bromide, potassium bromide, and cesium bromide, at two different concentrations. Cation-induced differences among electrolytes were observed in connection to their tendency to form ion pairs. An increased sensitivity to reveal the structure of the first hydration shell was evidenced when employing ultraviolet excitation in the 228-266 nm range, under resonance conditions with the charge transfer transition to the solvent peaked at about 200 nm. Other than a significant increase in the Raman cross-section for the OH stretching band when shifting from pure water to the solution, a larger enhancement for the Raman signal of the H-O-H bending mode over the stretching vibration was observed. Thus, the bending band plays a crucial role in monitoring the H-bond structure of water around the anions related to the charge distribution within the first hydration shell of anions, being an effective probe of hydration phenomena.

Abstract
The ion pairing is, in very dilute aqueous solutions, of rather small importance for solutions' properties, which renders its precise quantification quite a laborious task. Here we studied the ion pairing of alkali halides in water by using the precise electric conductivity measurements in dilute solutions, and in a wide temperature range. The low-concentration chemical model was used to analyze the results, and to estimate the association constant of different alkali halide salts. It has been shown that the association constant is related to the solubility of salts in water and produces a 'volcano relationship', when plotted against the difference between the free energy of hydration of the corresponding individual ions. The computer simulation, using the simple MB+dipole water model, were used to interprete the results, to find a microscopic basis for Collins' law of matching water affinities.

Abstract
Abstract
Near-critical and supercritical water is an unusual reaction medium with extraordinary properties, varying with temperature and density. This opens the opportunity for new reactions and new technical processes. In the studies of synthesis reactions, total oxidation and biomass gasification interesting effects of salts are observed. These effects are assumed to be caused by complex formation, acidity/basicity or the presence of active hydrogen due to the water-gas shift reaction. The water-gas shift reaction is catalysed by salts and lead to the formation of hydrogen, which might react with other compounds.
This article focuses on the salt effects during hydrogen production by biomass gasification in supercritical water. This is a very interesting process to make use of “wet biomass”, which is up to now not applied in a technical process. Here salts influenced the main reactions pathways. Possible reasons are discussed.

Abstract
Using classical molecular dynamics simulations, we study ion-ion interactions in water. We study the potentials of mean force (PMF) for the full set of alkali halide ion pairs, and in each case, we test different parameter sets for modeling both the water and the ions. Altogether, we compared 300 different PMFs. We also calculate association equilibrium constants (KA) and compare them to two types of experiments. Of additional interest here was the proposition of Collins called the "law of matching water affinities", where the relative affinity of ions in solution depends on the matching of cation and anion sizes. From observations on the relative depths of the free energies of the contact ion pair (CIP) and the solvent-shared ion pair (SIP), along with related solvent structure analyses, we find a good correlation with this proposition: small-small and large-large should associate in water, and small-large should be more dissociated.

Abstract
A systematic study of the dielectric relaxation spectra of aqueous solutions of LiCl and Li2SO4 has been made at solute concentrations of 0.05 < or = c/M < or = 1.0 and 2.0, respectively, and over a wide range of frequencies (0.2 < or = nu/GHz < or = 89) at 25 degrees C. The spectra were best described by a superposition of four Debye processes, consisting of the two well-known water relaxations at ca. 8 and 0.5 ps and two ion-pair contributions at ca. 200 and 20 ps, corresponding to the presence of double-solvent-separated (2SIP) and solvent-shared (SIP) ion pairs, respectively. Consistent with spectroscopic studies, no contact ion pairs were detected over the studied concentration range. The overall ion association constants K(o)(A) obtained were in good agreement with literature data for both salts. Detailed analysis of the solvent relaxations indicated that Li+ has a significant second solvation sheath although there were differences between the effective hydration numbers obtained from LiCl and Li2SO4, which might arise from competition for the solvent from the anions.

Abstract
An optimized molecular potential model for carbon dioxide is presented in this paper. Utilizing the established techniques of molecular-dynamics and histogram reweighting grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, this model is demonstrated to show excellent predictability for thermodynamic, transport, and liquid structural properties in a wide temperature-pressure range with remarkable accuracies. The average deviations of this new model from experimental data for the saturated liquid densities, vapor densities, vapor pressures, and heats of vaporization are around 0.1%, 2.3%, 0.7%, and 1.9%, respectively. The calculated critical point is almost pinpointed by the new model. The experimental radial distribution functions ranging from 240.0 to 473.0 K are well reproduced as compared to neutron-diffraction measurements. The predicted self-diffusion coefficients are in good agreement with the nuclear-magnetic-resonance measurements. The previously published potential models for CO2 are also systematically evaluated, and our proposed new model is found to be superior to the previous models in general.

Abstract
An ab initio molecular dynamics method was used to compare the ionic dissolution of soluble sodium chloride (NaCl) in water clusters with the highly insoluble silver chloride (AgCl). The investigations focused on the solvation structures, dynamics, and energetics of the contact ion pair (CIP) and of the solvent-separated ion pair (SSIP) in NaCl(H(2)O)(n) and AgCl(H(2)O)(n) with cluster sizes of n = 6, 10 and 14. We found that the minimum cluster size required to stabilize the SSIP configuration in NaCl(H(2)O)(n) is temperature-dependent. For n = 6, both configurations are present as two distinct local minima on the free-energy profile at 100 K, whereas SSIP is unstable at 300 K. Both configurations, separated by a low barrier (<10 kJ mol(-1)), are identifiable on the free energy profiles of NaCl(H(2)O)(n) for n = 10 and 14 at 300 K, with the Na(+)/Cl(-) pairs being internally solvated in the water cluster and the SSIP configuration being slightly higher in energy (<5 kJ mol(-1)). In agreement with the low bulk solubility of AgCl, no SSIP minimum is observed on the free-energy profiles of finite AgCl(H(2)O)(n) clusters. The AgCl interaction is more covalent in nature, and is less affected by the water solvent. Unlike NaCl, AgCl is mainly solvated on the surface in finite water clusters, and ionic dissolution requires a significant reorganization of the solvent structure.
