Full wave function cloning for improving convergence of the multiconfigurational Ehrenfest method: Tests in the zero-temperature spin-boson model regime

In this paper, we report a new algorithm for creating an adaptive basis set in the Multiconfigurational Ehrenfest (MCE) method, which is termed Full Cloning (FC), and test it together with the existing Multiple Cloning (MC) using the spin-boson model at zero-temperature as a benchmark. The zero-temperature spin-boson regime is a common hurdle in the development of methods that seek to model quantum dynamics. Two versions of MCE exist. We demonstrate that MC is vital for the convergence of MCE version 2 (MCEv2). The first version (MCEv1) converges much better than MCEv2, but FC improves its convergence in a few cases where it is hard to converge it with the help of a reasonably small size of the basis set.

Ultrafast electron diffraction of photoexcited gas-phase cyclobutanone predicted by ab initio multiple cloning simulations

We present the result of our calculations of ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) for cyclobutanone excited into the S2 electronic state, which is based on the non-adiabatic dynamics simulations with the Ab Initio Multiple Cloning (AIMC) method with the electronic structure calculated at the SA(3)-CASSCF(12,12)/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory. The key features in the UED pattern were identified, which can be used to distinguish between the reaction pathways observed in the AIMC dynamics, although there is a significant overlap between representative signals due to the structural similarity of the products. The calculated UED pattern can be compared with the experiment.

Nonadiabatic dynamics with classical trajectories: The problem of an initial coherent superposition of electronic states

Advances in coherent light sources and development of pump-probe techniques in recent decades have opened the way to study electronic motion in its natural time scale. When an ultrashort laser pulse interacts with a molecular target, a coherent superposition of electronic states is created and the triggered electron dynamics is coupled to the nuclear motion. A natural and computationally efficient choice to simulate this correlated dynamics is a trajectory-based method where the quantum-mechanical electronic evolution is coupled to a classical-like nuclear dynamics. These methods must approximate the initial correlated electron-nuclear state by associating an initial electronic wavefunction to each classical trajectory in the ensemble. Different possibilities exist that reproduce the initial populations of the exact molecular wavefunction when represented in a basis. We show that different choices yield different dynamics and explore the effect of this choice in Ehrenfest, surface hopping, and exact-factorization-based coupled-trajectory schemes in a one-dimensional two-electronic-state model system that can be solved numerically exactly. This work aims to clarify the problems that standard trajectory-based techniques might have when a coherent superposition of electronic states is created to initialize the dynamics, to discuss what properties and observables are affected by different choices of electronic initial conditions and to point out the importance of quantum-momentum-induced electronic transitions in coupled-trajectory schemes.

Equation-of-Motion Methods for the Calculation of Femtosecond Time-Resolved 4-Wave-Mixing and N-Wave-Mixing Signals

Femtosecond nonlinear spectroscopy is the main tool for the time-resolved detection of photophysical and photochemical processes. Since most systems of chemical interest are rather complex, theoretical support is indispensable for the extraction of the intrinsic system dynamics from the detected spectroscopic responses. There exist two alternative theoretical formalisms for the calculation of spectroscopic signals, the nonlinear response-function (NRF) approach and the spectroscopic equation-of-motion (EOM) approach. In the NRF formalism, the system-field interaction is assumed to be sufficiently weak and is treated in lowest-order perturbation theory for each laser pulse interacting with the sample. The conceptual alternative to the NRF method is the extraction of the spectroscopic signals from the solutions of quantum mechanical, semiclassical, or quasiclassical EOMs which govern the time evolution of the material system interacting with the radiation field of the laser pulses. The NRF formalism and its applications to a broad range of material systems and spectroscopic signals have been comprehensively reviewed in the literature. This article provides a detailed review of the suite of EOM methods, including applications to 4-wave-mixing and N-wave-mixing signals detected with weak or strong fields. Under certain circumstances, the spectroscopic EOM methods may be more efficient than the NRF method for the computation of various nonlinear spectroscopic signals.

Taming Disulfide Bonds with Laser Fields. Nonadiabatic Surface-Hopping Simulations in a Ruthenium Complex

Laser control of chemical reactions is a challenging field of research. In particular, the theoretical description of coupled electronic and nuclear motion in the presence of laser fields is not a trivial task and simulations are mostly restricted to small systems or molecules treated within reduced dimensionality. Here, we demonstrate how the excited state dynamics of [Ru(^S-Sbpy)(bpy)₂]²⁺ can be controlled using explicit laser fields in the context of fewest-switches surface hopping. In particular, the transient properties along the excited state dynamics leading to population of the T₁ minimum energy structure are exploited to define simple laser fields capable of slowing and even completely stopping the onset of S-S bond dissociation. The use of a linear vibronic coupling model to parametrize the potential energy surfaces showcases the strength of the surface-hopping methodology to study systems including explicit laser fields using many nuclear degrees of freedom and a large amount of close-lying electronic excited states.

Validating fewest-switches surface hopping in the presence of laser fields

The capability of fewest-switches surface hopping (FSSH) to describe non-adiabatic dynamics under explicit excitation with external fields is evaluated. Different FSSH parameters are benchmarked against multi-configurational time dependent Hartree (MCTDH) reference calculations using SO₂ and 2-thiocytosine as model, yet realistic, molecular systems. Qualitatively, FSSH is able to reproduce the trends in the MCTDH dynamics with (also without) an explicit external field; however, no set of FSSH parameters is ideal. The adequate treatment of the overcoherence in FSSH is revealed as the driving factor to improve the description of the excitation process with respect to the MCTDH reference. Here, two corrections were tested: the augmented-FSSH (AFSSH) correction and the energy-based decoherence correction. A dependence on the employed basis is detected in AFSSH, performing better when spin-orbit and external laser field couplings are treated as off-diagonal elements instead of projecting them onto the diagonal of the Hamilton operator. In the presence of an electric field, the excited state dynamics was found to depend strongly on the vector used to rescale the kinetic energy along after a transition between surfaces. For SO₂, recurrence of the excited wave packet throughout the duration of the applied laser pulse is observed for laser pulses (>100 fs), resulting in additional interferences missed by FSSH and only visible in variational multi-configurational Gaussian when utilizing a large number of Gaussian basis functions. This feature vanishes when going toward larger molecules, such as 2-thiocytosine, where this effect is barely visible in a laser pulse 200 fs long.

Quantum-classical nonadiabatic dynamics of Floquet driven systems

We develop a trajectory-based approach for excited-state molecular dynamics simulations of systems subject to an external periodic drive. We combine the exact-factorization formalism, allowing us to treat electron-nuclear systems in nonadiabatic regimes, with the Floquet formalism for time-periodic processes. The theory is developed starting with the molecular time-dependent Schrödinger equation with the inclusion of an external periodic drive that couples to the system dipole moment. With the support of the Floquet formalism, quantum dynamics is approximated by combining classical-like, trajectory-based, nuclear evolution with electronic dynamics represented in the Floquet basis. The resulting algorithm, which is an extension of the coupled-trajectory mixed quantum-classical scheme for periodically driven systems, is applied to a model study, exactly solvable, with different field intensities.

The quantum-Ehrenfest method with the inclusion of an IR pulse: Application to electron dynamics of the allene radical cation

We describe the implementation of a laser control pulse in the quantum-Ehrenfest method, a molecular quantum dynamics method that solves the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for both electrons and nuclei. The oscillating electric field-dipole interaction is incorporated directly in the one-electron Hamiltonian of the electronic structure part of the algorithm. We then use the coupled electron-nuclear dynamics of the π-system in the allene radical cation (•CH₂=C=CH₂)⁺ as a simple model of a pump-control experiment. We start (pump) with a two-state superposition of two cationic states. The resulting electron dynamics corresponds to the rapid oscillation of the unpaired electron between the two terminal methylenes. This electron dynamics is, in turn, coupled to the torsional motion of the terminal methylenes. There is a conical intersection at 90° twist, where the electron dynamics collapses because the adiabatic states become degenerate. After passing the conical intersection, the electron dynamics revives. The IR pulse (control) in our simulations is timed to have its maximum at the conical intersection. Our simulations show that the effect of the (control) pulse is to change the electron dynamics at the conical intersection and, as a consequence, the concomitant nuclear dynamics, which is dominated by the change in the torsional angle.
