Abstract
Porous starch (PS) was widely prepared for its large effective surface area, pore volume, and superior hydrophilic property, but its application is limited by enzyme and chemical use. In this study, a novel method to prepare PS with controllable hierarchical pores through ultrasound-ethanol precipitation and different amylose-amylopectin ratios is proposed. As shown in porous morphology and parameters, there were macropores, mesopores and micropores in the formed PS. Moreover, we found that the content of amylose (AM) was negatively related with the total pore volume and pore diameter in PS. The different surface tensions created through ethanol evaporation and water migration during oven drying are the main mechanisms of forming pores with controllable sizes. Based on the molecular information and the long-/short-range orders reflected by crystalline pattern, lamellas, and single-/double-helices, we conclude that AM is easier to form V-type inclusion complexes with ethanol. More single helix of V-amylose was transformed from B-type polymorph after ethanol exchange, which had significantly broadened dLozentz in PS. The TG spectra proved that the novel PS has the stable thermodynamic property. Overall, the finding of an objective regular between AM and pore sizes of PS in this study may support the other work related to PS.

Abstract
AIMS This study examines microencapsulation as a method to enhance the stability of natural compounds, which typically suffer from inherent instability under environmental conditions, aiming to extend their application in the pharmaceutical industry. METHODS We explore and compare various microencapsulation techniques, including spray drying, freeze drying, and coacervation, with a focus on spray drying due to its noted advantages. RESULTS The analysis reveals that microencapsulation, especially via spray drying, significantly improves natural compounds' stability, offering varied morphologies, sizes, and efficiencies in encapsulation. These advancements facilitate controlled release, taste modification, protection from degradation, and extended shelf life of pharmaceutical products. CONCLUSION Microencapsulation, particularly through spray drying, presents a viable solution to the instability of natural compounds, broadening their application in pharmaceuticals by enhancing protection and shelf life.

Abstract
This study focuses on the development of bioactive materials using environmentally friendly techniques, renewable, biocompatible, and biodegradable polysaccharide, as well as natural bioactive compounds (NBCs) found in plant extracts. First, cornstarch aerogels with a porosity of 86 % and a specific surface area of 225 m2/g were produced via supercritical CO2- assisted drying. Further, thymol, citronellol, carvacrol, and eugenol were incorporated into the aerogels by supercritical CO2- assisted impregnation, which allowed variation in loadings of NBCs (12.8-17.6 %). Interaction between cornstarch aerogels and NBCs determined impregnation rate, pore wall thickness (in the range 18-95 nm), liquid absorption capacity (from 265 to 569 %), dehydration mass loss, and release in phosphate-buffered saline. Controlled release of NBCs was maintained over a 3-day period. Moreover, impregnated aerogels showed a significant antioxidant effect with the highest value for DPPH radical inhibition of 25.5 % determined for the aerogels impregnated with eugenol. Notable antimicrobial activity against tested Gram-negative bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria, and fungi was also observed, being the highest for thymol-loaded aerogel with the diameter of the inhibition zones of up to 37.5 mm. This work shows a promising green approach for the production of bioactive two-component starch-based materials for potential applications in skin infection treatment.

Abstract
β-carotene, a natural dye renowned for its antioxidant and provitamin A activities, is hindered from direct use in food and drug products due to its susceptibility to oxidation, easy isomerization under light, heat, or acidic conditions, as well as its low water solubility and oral bioavailability. In this study, we addressed these challenges by loading β-carotene into corn starch aerogels via supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-CO2) and assessed its loading contributions through adsorption during contact time and precipitation during depressurization. The loading process was studied under two cycles at pressure of 30 MPa, temperature of 40 °C, depressurization rate of 0.4 MPa/min, and co-solvent (ethanol) mass percentage of 1.2 %. Experiments found adsorption minimally contributed to impregnation, while precipitation became the primary loading mechanism. The subsequent work focused on a mathematical model describing β-carotene loading into corn starch aerogels via precipitation, using the law of conservation of mass and classical nucleation theory. The model shows that using pure CO2 results in a loading efficiency of 0.10 mg β-carotene/g aerogel, while with CO2 and 1.2 % ethanol as the co-solvent, the loading efficiency increases threefold to 0.30 mg β-carotene/g aerogel.

Abstract
This work proposes the use of supercritical CO2 to impregnate starch (potato and corn) aerogels with quercetin for a potential fungistatic application. Starch aerogels were successfully produced with supercritical drying, but different results were found depending on the amylose/amylopectin ratio. A higher amount of amylose increases aerogels' specific surface area (with a structure with nanofibrils and nodes) due to the linear and amorphous character of this polymer, whereas a higher amount of amylopectin decreases this property until values of only 25 m2·g-1, obtaining an aerogel with a rough surface. These results were explained with XRD, thermogravimetric, and rheological results (triple step with two temperature sweeps and a time sweep and steady state analysis) concerning hydrogel formation. In fact, retrogradation step plays a more important role in hydrogel formation for a starch source with a higher amount of amylopectin due to an increase in the different polymers' interactions. Supercritical impregnation of quercetin on the aerogels was successfully performed (a loading around 0.30 % with respect to the amount of polymer), and in vitro results indicated that the aerogels produced a fungistatic effect on different types of fungi, but only in the first 12 h because the microorganisms adapted to the surrounding environment. Finally, a compartmental model was used to fit the drug release, which is controlled by quercetin aqueous solubility, indicating the main mass transfer resistances (mass transfer through aerogels was always around 500 min-1 and dissolution process mass transfer from 5·10-3 to 1.65·10-3 s-1) and how an increase in the specific surface area of the aerogels (in the case of corn aerogel) provided a stronger initial burst (70-80 % in 20 min). In fact, this initial burst release was mathematically related to a parameter, that varies from 0.178 to 0.036 depending on the aerogel composition. This study shows that starch aerogels can be impregnated with a hydrophobic compound with fungistatic effect by using supercritical CO2, modifying in addition the drug release by changing the native starch.

Abstract
This study aimed to produce water-absorbent bioactive aerogels using biodegradable raw materials, wheat starch and poly ethylene oxide (PEO), and derived from agro-industrial residues (grape skin) obtained in the wine industry. The aerogels were produced using germinated wheat starch (GWS), with and without PEO, and incorporating grape skin extract (GSE) at concentrations of 5 and 10 % (w/w). The GSE was evaluated for total and individual phenolic compounds, anthocyanins, and antioxidant activity. The starch aerogels were characterized for morphology, density, porosity, functional groups by FT-IR, relative crystallinity and diffraction pattern, water absorption capacity, antioxidant activity, and in vitro release profile of phenolic compounds in food simulant medium. The total phenolic compounds in GSE was 226.25 ± 0.01 mg equivalent of gallic acid/g GSE. The aerogels showed low density and high porosity. All aerogels demonstrated high water absorption capacity (581.4 to 997.5 %). The antioxidant activity of the aerogels increased with increasing GSE concentration and the addition of PEO. The aerogels could release GSE gradually for up to 120 days in the hydrophilic simulant medium and 240 h for the hydrophobic medium. Starch-based aerogels with GSE showed potential to be applied as exudate absorbers with antioxidant activity to develop active food packaging.

Abstract
Drug delivery systems have emerged as a prominent research focus in the field of drug development, offering enhanced stability and improved bioavailability. Among them, protein (silk, gelatin and whey) or polysaccharide (alginate, chitosan, cellulose, starch, pectin and carrageenan) aerogels derived from natural sources have gained increasing popularity due to their unique advantages, such as cost-effectiveness, flexible preparation, bioactivity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. However, despite their growing significance, there remains a lack of comprehensive information and ongoing confusion regarding the application of protein/polysaccharide aerogels in drug delivery system. Hence, the objective of this review was to provide a comprehensive review of the research progress in protein/polysaccharide aerogels for drug delivery systems from the perspective of aerogels category, synthesis strategy, drug-loading method, performance characteristic and release mechanism. Furthermore, by consolidating the existing information, we aimed to present our own perspectives and insights on the future development of protein/polysaccharide aerogels in drug delivery system. In conclusion, this comprehensive review served as a valuable resource for researchers and scholars, addressing the current gaps in knowledge and clarifying the complex landscape of protein/polysaccharide aerogels in drug delivery system.

Abstract
Soil fertilizers have the potential to significantly increase crop yields and improve plant health by providing essential nutrients to the soil. The use of fertilizers can also help to improve soil structure and fertility, leading to more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems. However, overuse or improper use of fertilizers can lead to soil degradation, which can reduce soil fertility, decrease crop yields, and damage ecosystems. Thus, several attempts have been made to overcome the issues related to the drawbacks of fertilizers, including the development of an advanced fertilizer delivery system. Biopolymer aerogels show promise as an innovative solution to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of soil-fertilizer delivery systems. Further research and development in this area could lead to the widespread adoption of biopolymer aerogels in agriculture, promoting sustainable farming practices and helping to address global food-security challenges. This review discusses for the first time the potential of biopolymer-based aerogels in soil-fertilizer delivery, going through the types of soil fertilizer and the advert health and environmental effects of overuse or misuse of soil fertilizers. Different types of biopolymer-based aerogels were discussed in terms of their potential in fertilizer delivery and, finally, the review addresses the challenges and future directions of biopolymer aerogels in soil-fertilizer delivery.

Abstract
In this study, a starch cryoaerogel formulation was developed as a carrier for poorly water-soluble drugs, like atorvastatin. Cryoaerogels were generated through a sol-gel method combined with a freeze-drying technique, and atorvastatin was incorporated into the obtained mesoporous systems during the solvent exchange stage. The formulated drug-loaded polymer structures were characterized in terms of their physicochemical properties, solid-state behavior, and cytotoxicity. They had a pore size of 27.56 nm and a drug loading size of 38.60%. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses indicated that atorvastatin was successfully incorporated into the cryoaerogel pores. The amorphous nature of the loaded drug was confirmed via X-ray diffraction (XRD). Furthermore, after the atorvastatin incorporation into the cryogel, the volume of nitrogen adsorbed on one gram of cryoaerogel (Vm), as well as the specific surface area (aBET) were reduced. The comparison between the drug release profiles of crystalline atorvastatin and the loaded formulation of atorvastatin showed that by including the drug into the pores of the developed cryoaerogel matrix its solubility was significantly improved-the time for the dissolution of 30% pure atorvastatin (t30%) was approximately 4 h, whereas the determined t30% for the formulated cryoaerogels was only 1 h. Moreover, the data from the MTT assay illustrated that the designed cryoaerogel could be used as a safe oral atorvastatin delivery system. According to obtained results, it could be concluded that the starch cryoaerogel formulation is a promising candidate for oral delivery of poorly water-soluble therapeutic agents.

Abstract
Impact of glycerol on the physico-functional, morphological, mechanical, and rehydration properties ofcorn starch-based aerogel has been investigated. The aerogel was prepared from hydrogel (sol-gel method) using solvent exchange and supercritical CO2 drying. Glycerol-infused aerogel had a more connected, denser structure (0.38-0.45 g/cm3), enhanced hygroscopic behavior, and was reusable up to eight times in terms of its capacity to absorb water after being drawn from the soaked sample. However, the inclusion of glycerol reduced the aerogel's porosity (75.89-69.91 %) and water absorption rate (WAR; 118.53-84.64 %) but enhanced its percentage shrinkage (75.03-77.99 %) and compressive strength (26.01-295.06 N). The most effective models for describing the rehydration behavior of aerogel were determined to be the Page, Weibull, and Modified Peleg models. Glycerol addition improved the internal strength of the aerogel so could be recycled without significant change in the physical characteristics of the aerogel. By effectively eliminating the condensed moisture that was developed inside the packing owing to the transpiration of fresh spinach leaves, the aerogel extended the storage life of the leaves by up to eight days. The glycerol-based aerogel has the potential to be employed as a carrier matrix for various chemicals and a moisture scavenger.

Abstract
This paper evaluates corn starch aerogels, studying different crosslinking agent (trisodium citrate) concentrations (1:1, 1:1.5, and 1:2) and sorption conditions (contact time, adsorbent weight, and initial concentration) regarding the potentially toxic elements (PTEs) [Cd(II) or Zn(II)] adsorption of the aqueous systems. Besides, other properties of aerogels, such as structural properties, specific surface area, and mechanical performance, were evaluated. For adsorption results, better values were observed in adsorption capacity and efficiency for the initial concentration of 100 ppm. In addition, an adsorption time of 12 h and an adsorbent weight of 3.0 g obtained better results due to the possible balance in this time and the high specific surface area available for Cd(II) adsorption. As for the type of adsorbent, the Aero 1:1.5 sample (intermediate crosslinking agent concentration) obtained better results, possibly due to the high porosity, smaller pore sizes, high pore density, and high specific surface area (198 m2·g-1). In addition, hydroxyl groups in the starch aerogel removed Cd(II) ions with 30 % adsorption efficiency. Lastly, Aero 1:1.5 obtained a high mechanical strength at compression and a satisfactory compressive modulus. In contrast, starch aerogels did not absorb the Zn(II) ion.

Abstract
Bioactive food compounds, such as lycopene, curcumin, phytosterols, and resveratrol, have received great attention due to their potential health benefits. However, these bioactive compounds (BCs) have poor chemical stability during processing and low bioavailability after consumption. Several delivery systems have been proposed for enhancing their stability and bioavailability. Among these methods, porous biopolymers have emerged as alternative encapsulation materials, as they have superior properties like high surface area, porosity, and tunable surface chemistry to entrap BCs. This reduces the crystallinity (especially for the lipophilic ones) and particle size, and in turn, increases solubilization and bioavailability. Also, loading BCs into the porous matrix can protect them against environmental stresses such as light, heat, oxygen, and pH. This review introduces polysaccharide-based porous biopolymers for improving the bioaccessibility/bioavailability of bioactive food compounds and discusses their recent applications in the food industry. First, bioaccessibility and bioavailability are described with a special emphasis on the factors affecting them. Then, porous biopolymer fabrication methods, including supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2 ) drying, freeze-drying, and electrospinning and electrospraying, are thoroughly discussed. Finally, common polysaccharide-based biopolymers (i.e., starch, nanocellulose, alginate, and pectin) used for generating porous materials are reviewed, and their current and potential future food applications are critically discussed.

Abstract
Many concerns are being expressed about the biodegradability, biocompatibility, and long-term viability of polymer-based substances. This prompted the quest for an alternative source of material that could be utilized for various purposes. Starch is widely used as a thickener, emulsifier, and binder in many food and non-food sectors, but research focuses on increasing its application beyond these areas. Due to its biodegradability, low cost, renewability, and abundance, starch is considered a "green path" raw material for generating porous substances such as aerogels, biofoams, and bioplastics, which have sparked an academic interest. Existing research has focused on strategies for developing biomaterials from organic polymers (e.g., cellulose), but there has been little research on its polysaccharide counterpart (starch). This review paper highlighted the structure of starch, the context of amylose and amylopectin, and the extraction and modification of starch with their processes and limitations. Moreover, this paper describes nanofillers, intelligent pH-sensitive films, biofoams, aerogels of various types, bioplastics, and their precursors, including drying and manufacturing. The perspectives reveal the great potential of starch-based biomaterials in food, pharmaceuticals, biomedicine, and non-food applications.

Abstract
To improve the mechanical strength and oil-loading performances of egg white protein (EWP) aerogel, the effects of different grafting degrees on the modification of EWP by sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC-Na) were investigated. After different dry-heat treatment durations (0, 12, 24, 36, and 48 h), the EWP/CMC-Na conjugates with different grafting degrees (noted as EC0, EC12, EC24, EC36, and EC48, respectively) were obtained. Subsequently, the physicochemical properties of the conjugates, as well as the microstructure, mechanical properties, pore parameters, emulsification properties and oil-carrying properties of the conjugated aerogels, were characterized. The results showed that EC12 (with a grafting degree of 8.35%) aerogel possessed a uniform structure, the largest specific surface area, and the best emulsification performance. This facilitated a more robust aerogel (2.05 MPa) with nearly three times the mechanical strength of EWP aerogel. Moreover, this had a positive influence on the efficient loading and stable retention of oil. EC12 aerogel thus achieved an oil absorption capacity of 5.46 g/g aerogel and an oil holding capacity of 31.95%, and both values were nearly 1.7 times higher than those of EWP aerogel. In general, the EWP-based aerogel with a grafting degree of 8.35% had the best mechanical and oil-loading properties.

Abstract
Traditional inorganic aerogels sustainability, biodegradability, and environmental safety concerns have driven researchers to find their safe green alternatives. Recently, interest in the application of bio-aerogels has rapidly increased in the food industry due to their unique characteristics such as high specific surface area and porosity, ultralow density, tunable pore size and morphology, and superior properties (physicochemical, mechanical, and functional). Bio-aerogels, a special category of highly porous unique materials, fabricated by the sol-gel method followed by drying processes, comprising three-dimensional networks of interconnected biopolymers (e.g., polysaccharides and proteins) with numerous air-filled pores. The production of bio-aerogels begins with the formation of a homogeneously dispersed precursor solution, followed by gelation and wet gel drying procedures by employing special drying techniques including atmospheric-, freeze-, and supercritical drying. Due to their special properties, bio-aerogels have emerged as sustainable biomaterial for many industrial applications, i.e., encapsulation and controlled delivery, active packaging, heavy metals separation, water and air filtration, oleogels, and biosensors. Bio-aerogels are low-cost, biocompatible, and biodegradable sustainable material that can be used in improving the processing, storage, transportation, and bioavailability of food additives, functional ingredients, and bioactive substances for their health benefits with enhanced shelf-life.

Abstract
The use of natural food ingredients has been increased in recent years due to the negative health implications of synthetic ingredients. Natural bioactive compounds are important for the development of health-oriented functional food products with better quality attributes. The natural bioactive compounds possess different types of bioactivities, e.g., antioxidative, antimicrobial, antihypertensive, and antiobesity activities. The most common method for the development of functional food is the fortification of these bioactive compounds during food product manufacturing. However, many of these natural bioactive compounds are heat-labile and less stable. Therefore, the industry and researchers proposed the microencapsulation of natural bioactive compounds, which may improve the stability of these compounds during processing and storage conditions. It may also help in controlling and sustaining the release of natural compounds in the food product matrices, thus, providing bioactivity for a longer duration. In this regard, several advanced techniques have been explored in recent years for microencapsulation of bioactive compounds, e.g., essential oils, healthy oils, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, flavoring compounds, enzymes, and vitamins. The efficiency of microencapsulation depends on various factors which are related to natural compounds, encapsulating materials, and encapsulation process. This review provides an in-depth discussion on recent advances in microencapsulation processes as well as their application in food systems.

Abstract
The objective was to investigate the effect of synergistic enzymatic treatment on the properties and digestibility of a novel C-type lotus seed porous starch (LPS). Scanning electron microscopy showed that the densest and most complete pores were formed on the surface of LPS when the concentration of enzymes added was 1.5% (LS-1.5E). With increases in enzyme addition, the oil and water absorption of the porous starch increased and reached maxima at 1.5% of enzyme. Increased in the specific surface area, total pore volume and average pore diameter of LPS were determined by low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, while when the enzymes exceeded 1.5%, there were no significant changes. Compared to lotus seed starch (LS), the particle size of LPS also decreased. With the increases in enzyme addition, LPS exhibited higher relative crystallinity and ordering structure by XRD and FTIR. The results by SAXS confirmed that LPS had higher ordered semi-crystalline lamellar and denser lamellar structure compared to LS. Low-field 1H NMR spectroscopy indicated that the proportion of bound water in LPS increased, while the proportion of bulk water decreased. Moreover, the degree of hydrolysis of LPS was lower than that of LS, and the content of rapidly digestible starch decreased, while the content of slowly digestible starch and resistant starch increased with the enzyme addition, which was consistent with the structural properties.

Abstract
Many new chemical entities (NCEs) have been discovered with the development of the pharmaceutical industry. However, the main disadvantage of these drugs is their low aqueous solubility, which results in poor bioavailability, posing a challenge for pharmaceutical scientists in the field of drug development. Solid dispersion (SD) technology is one of the most successful techniques used to resolve these problems. SD has been widely used to improve the solubility and bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs using several methods such as melting, supercritical fluid (SCF), solvent evaporation, spray drying, hot-melt extrusion, and freeze-drying. Among them, SCF with carbon dioxide (CO2) has recently attracted great attention owing to its enhanced dissolution and bioavailability with non-toxic, economical, non-polluting, and high-efficiency properties. Compared with the conventional methods using organic solvents in the preparation of the formulation (solvent evaporation method), SCF used CO2 to replace the organic solvent with high pressure to avoid the limitation of solvent residues. The solubility of a substance in CO2 plays an important role in the success of the formulation. In the present review, the various processes involved in SCF technology, application of SCF to prepare SD, and future perspectives of SCF are described.

Abstract
Herein, a series of novel adsorbents derived from glucose, maltose, and starch zinc oxide (ZnO) loaded carbohydrate-based carbon materials (Zn-Cs) were synthesized by a fast and efficient self-propagating combustion synthesis method (SCS). The experimental results show that Zn-Cs exhibits excellent adsorption performance (>375 mg/g) to tetracycline, and the pseudo-second-order model and Freundlich model can better describe the adsorption data. The adsorption capacities of Zn-Cs were over 300 mg/g throughout the wide pH range (6-9), while various coexisting ions in the concentration range of 0-10 mg/L and the presence of humic acid had nearly no impact on the adsorption of tetracycline. Moreover, the adsorption experiment of simulated hospital wastewater shows that the adsorption capacity of Zn-Cs for tetracycline exceeds 185 mg/g. The adsorption mechanism of tetracycline are H-bond, complexation, and conjugation effect. This work provides an efficient, excellent versatility and time-saving strategy for preparing high-performance carbohydrate-based carbon materials for adsorbents.

Abstract
An open-porous protein sponge with mixed wettability is presented made entirely from whey proteins and with promising applications in biomedicine, pharmaceutical, and food industry. The fabrication relies on an additive-free, clean and scalable process consisting of foaming followed by controlled microwave-convection drying. Volumetric heating throughout the matrix induced by microwaves causes fast expansion and elongation of the foam bubbles, retards crust formation and promotes early protein denaturation. These effects counteract collapse and shrinkage typically encountered in convection drying of foams. The interplay of high protein content, tailored gas incorporation and controlled drying result in a dried structure with dual-scale porosity composed of open macroscopic elongated foam bubbles and microscopic pores in the surrounding solid lamellae induced by water evaporation. Due to the insolubility and mixed wettability of the denatured protein network, polar and non-polar liquids are rapidly absorbed into the interconnected capillary system of the sponge without disintegrating. While non-watery liquids penetrate the pores by capillary suction, water diffuses also into the stiff protein matrix, inducing swelling and softening. Consequently, the water-filled soft sponge can be emptied by compression and re-absorbs any wetting liquid into the free capillary space.

Abstract
Porous polysaccharides have recently attracted attention due to their porosity, abundance, and excellent properties such as sustainability and biocompatibility, thereby resulting in their numerous applications. Recent years have seen a rise in the number of studies on the utilization of polysaccharides such as cellulose, chitosan, chitin, and starch as aerogels due to their unique performance for the fabrication of porous structures. The present review explores recent progress in porous polysaccharides, particularly cellulose and chitosan, including their synthesis, application, and future outlook. Since the synthetic process is an important aspect of aerogel formation, particularly during the drying step, the process is reviewed in some detail, and a comparison is drawn between the supercritical CO2 and freeze drying processes in order to understand the aerogel formation of porous polysaccharides. Finally, the current applications of polysaccharide aerogels in drug delivery, wastewater, wound dressing, and air filtration are explored, and the limitations and outlook of the porous aerogels are discussed with respect to their future commercialization.

Abstract
Aerogels are the lightest processed solid materials on Earth and with the largest empty volume fraction in their structure. Composition versatility, modularity, and feasibility of industrial scale manufacturing are behind the fast emergence of aerogels in the drug delivery field. Compared to other 3D materials, the high porosity (interconnected mesopores) and high specific surface area of aerogels may allow faster loading of small-molecule drugs, less constrained access to inner regions of the matrix, and more efficient interactions of the biological milieu with the polymer matrix. Processing in supercritical CO2 medium for both aerogel production (drying) and drug loading (impregnation) has remarkable advantages such as absence of an oxidizing environment, clean manufacture, and easiness for the scale-up under good manufacturing practices. The aerogel solid skeleton dictates the chemical affinity to the different drugs, which in turn determines the loading efficiency and the release pattern. Aerogels can be used to increase the solubility of BCS Class II and IV drugs because the drug can be deposited in amorphous state onto the large surface area of the skeleton, which facilitates a rapid contact with the body fluids, dissolution, and release. Conversely, tuning the aerogel structure by functionalization with drug-binding moieties or stimuli-responsive components, application of coatings and incorporation of drug-loaded aerogels into other matrices may enable site-specific, stimuli-responsive, or prolonged drug release. The present review deals with last decade advances in aerogels for drug delivery. An special focus is paid first on the loading efficiency of active ingredients and release kinetics under biorelevant conditions. Subsequent sections deal with aerogels intended to address specific therapeutic demands. In addition to oral delivery, the physical properties of the aerogels appear to be very advantageous for mucosal administration routes, such as pulmonary, nasal, or transdermal. A specific section devoted to recent achievements in gene therapy and theranostics is also included. In the last section, scale up strategies and life cycle assessment are comprehensively addressed.

Abstract
Cellulose aerogels (CAs) from plant or bacterial-derived cellulose have advantages such as low density, high porosity, and high specific surface area and have been used in various applications including biomedical fields. One limiting factor in developing CAs is their demanding shaping process since it involves several steps of dissolution/dispersion of cellulose, geometry configurations using molds or nozzles, coagulation and washing of the gel body, and drying techniques. CA fibers can be converted into textiles and enhance the design ability, stiffness, and flexibility of the CAs. This study aims to understand the correlations between the initial cellulose characteristics, aerogel’s internal structure, and its prospective biomedical application. Wet-spun CA fibers were obtained by supercritical CO2 drying from low and high molecular weight microcrystalline cellulose in calcium thiocyanate tetrahydrate solution. Fiber spinning, thermal behavior, textural properties, and biological assessments of the CA fibers were inspected. The CA microfibers from high molecular weight cellulose proved to have a higher surface area (~197 m2/g), denser structure, and finer nanofibrils (~2 nm) with better thermal stability in comparison with the fibers produced from low molecular weight cellulose. The fibers were nontoxic, and cell proliferation was observed over time. CA fibers showed promising results to be used for biomedical applications such as tissue engineering and wound care.

Abstract
According to the International Energy Agency, biorefinery is "the sustainable processing of biomass into a spectrum of marketable bio-based products (chemicals, materials) and bioenergy (fuels, power, heat)". In this review, we survey how the biorefinery approach can be applied to highly porous and nanostructured materials, namely aerogels. Historically, aerogels were first developed using inorganic matter. Subsequently, synthetic polymers were also employed. At the beginning of the 21st century, new aerogels were created based on biomass. Which sources of biomass can be used to make aerogels and how? This review answers these questions, paying special attention to bio-aerogels' environmental and biomedical applications. The article is a result of fruitful exchanges in the frame of the European project COST Action "CA 18125 AERoGELS: Advanced Engineering and Research of aeroGels for Environment and Life Sciences".

Abstract
Recently, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine studies have evaluated smart biomaterials as implantable scaffolds and their interaction with cells for biomedical applications. Porous materials have been used in tissue engineering as synthetic extracellular matrices, promoting the attachment and migration of host cells to induce the in vitro regeneration of different tissues. Biomimetic 3D scaffold systems allow control over biophysical and biochemical cues, modulating the extracellular environment through mechanical, electrical, and biochemical stimulation of cells, driving their molecular reprogramming. In this review, first we outline the main advantages of using polysaccharides as raw materials for porous scaffolds, as well as the most common processing pathways to obtain the adequate textural properties, allowing the integration and attachment of cells. The second approach focuses on the tunable characteristics of the synthetic matrix, emphasizing the effect of their mechanical properties and the modification with conducting polymers in the cell response. The use and influence of polysaccharide-based porous materials as drug delivery systems for biochemical stimulation of cells is also described. Overall, engineered biomaterials are proposed as an effective strategy to improve in vitro tissue regeneration and future research directions of modified polysaccharide-based materials in the biomedical field are suggested.

Abstract
In this work, the ability of several solvents to induce gel formation from amylomaize starch solubilized in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was investigated. The formed gels were subjected to solvent exchange using ethanol and dried with supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-CO2) to obtain the aerogels. The influence of starch concentration (3–15 wt%) and solvent content (20–80 wt%) on gel formation was also studied. It was demonstrated that the gelation of starch in binary mixtures of solvents can be rationalized by Hansen Solubility Parameters (HSP) revealing a crucial hole of hydrogen bonding for the gel’s strength, which is in agreement with rheological measurements. Only the addition of water or propylene glycol to starch/DMSO solutions resulted in strong gels at a minimum starch and solvent content of 7.5 wt% and 50 wt%, respectively. The resulting aerogels showed comparably high specific surface areas (78–144 m2 g−1) and low envelope densities (0.097–0.203 g cm−3). The results of this work indicate that the HSP parameters could be used as a tool to guide the rational selection of water-free gelation in starch/DMSO systems. In addition, it opens up an attractive opportunity to perform starch gelation in those solvents that are miscible with sc-CO2, avoiding the time-consuming step of solvent exchange.

Abstract
AbstractPea and amylomaize starches were used to produce aerogel in form of monoliths and microparticles. The formation of starch gel was investigated, and we showed that each starch needed a different pasting temperature for its complete dissolution. The gelation kinetics was investigated with oscillatory rheometry for both systems as a function of the starch concentration. The gelation and retrogradation temperature of the starch gel were varied and its impact on the final aerogel evaluated. The emulsion gelation was carried out batch wise in a stirred vessel with different impeller geometries, concentrations of surfactant (Span80 and PGPR) and stirring rates. A particle size prediction approach based on idealized flow (Couette, 2D hyperbolic and turbulent) during the emulsification was proposed. A semi-continuous set-up for the emulsion gelation was developed in which the emulsification occurs in a single pass through a colloid mill and the gelation is triggered in-line with a counter-current heat exchanger.

Abstract
Silica-gelatin hybrid aerogels of varying gelatin content (from 4 wt.% to 24 wt.%) can be conveniently impregnated with hydrophobic active agents (e.g. ibuprofen, ketoprofen) in supercritical CO2 and used as drug delivery systems. Contrast variation neutron scattering (SANS) experiments show the molecular level hybridization of the silica and the gelatin components of the aerogel carriers. The active agents are amorphous, and homogeneously dispersed in these porous, hybrid matrices. Importantly, both fast and retarded drug release can be achieved with silica-gelatin hybrid aerogels, and the kinetics of drug release is governed by the gelatin content of the carrier. In this paper, for the first time, a molecular level explanation is given for the strong correlation between the composition and the functionality of a family of aerogel based drug delivery systems. Characterization of the wet aerogels by SANS and by NMR diffusiometry, cryoporometry and relaxometry revealed that the different hydration mechanisms of the aerogels are responsible for the broad spectrum of release kinetics. Low-gelatin (4-11 wt.%) aerogels retain their open-porous structure in water, thus rapid matrix erosion dictates fast drug release from these carriers. In contrast to this, wet aerogels of high gelatin content (18-24 wt.%) show well pronounced hydrogel-like characteristics, and a wide gradual transition zone forms in the solid-liquid interface. The extensive swelling of the high-gelatin hybrid backbone results in the collapse of the open porous structure, that limits mass transport towards the release medium, resulting in slower, diffusion controlled drug release. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Developing new drug delivery systems is a key aspect of pharmaceutical research. Supercritically dried mesoporous aerogels are ideal carriers for small molecular weight drugs due to their open porous structures and large specific surface areas. Hybrid silica-gelatin aerogels can display both fast and retarded drug release properties based on the gelatin contents of their backbones. The structural characterization of the aerogels by SANS and by NMR diffusiometry, cryoporometry and relaxometry revealed that the different hydration mechanisms of the hybrid backbones are responsible for the broad spectrum of release kinetics. The molecular level understanding of the functionality of these hybrid inorganic-biopolymer drug delivery systems facilitates the realization of quality-by-design in this research field.

Abstract
Freeze-dried gellan gum gels present great potential as delivery systems for biocompounds, such as vitamins, in food products. Here, we investigate the effect of modifying the gel pH-prior to the encapsulation process-on drying and release kinetics, and on delivery mechanisms from the substrate. Gellan gum gels were prepared at pH 5.2, 4 and 2.5 and loaded with riboflavin before being freeze-dried. Release tests were then carried out at ambient temperature in water. Five drying kinetics models were fitted to freeze-drying experimental curves using regression analysis. The goodness-of-fit was evaluated according to (i) the root mean squared error (ii), adjusted R-square (iii), Akaike information criterion (iv) and Bayesian information criterion. The Wang and Singh model provided the most accurate descriptions for drying at acidified pH (i.e., pH 4 and pH 2.5), while the Page model described better freeze-drying at pH 5.2 (gellan gum's natural pH). The effect of pH on the vitamin release mechanism was also determined using the Korsmeyer-Peppas model, with samples at pH 5.2 showing a typical Fickian behaviour, while acidified samples at pH 4 combined both Fickian and relaxation mechanisms. Overall, these results establish the basis for identifying the optimal conditions for biocompound delivery using freeze-dried gellan gels.

Abstract
Cellulose acetate (CA) is a very versatile biocompatible polymer used in various industrial sectors. Therefore, depending on the application, different morphologies are required. Different processes at industrial scale are commonly employed to obtain CA micro or nanoparticles (discontinuous structures) or CA membranes (continuous structures with discontinuities). In this work, two supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) based techniques, such as the semi-continuous supercritical antisolvent process (SAS) and the supercritical fluid phase inversion process, in which scCO2 plays the role of antisolvent, were employed. Varying the kind of organic solvent used to prepare the polymeric solution, the polymer concentration, and operating pressure and temperature, it was possible to tune the characteristics of the obtained material. In particular, using acetone as the organic solvent, filaments constituted by nanoparticles, expanded microparticles, nanoparticles with a mean diameter lower than 80 nm, and microporous membranes were obtained, varying the operating conditions. The attainment of spherical micron-sized particles was instead achieved using a mixture of acetone and DMSO as the organic solvent. Therefore, the versatility of the supercritical carbon dioxide-based techniques has been confirmed, and it was possible to obtain, using a single experimental plant, various morphologies of cellulose acetate (with controllable particles' or pores' diameters) by varying the operating conditions.
