A Novel Approach for Single-Step Analyte Fractionation of Raw Milk Prior to Antibiotic Residue Trace Analysis as an Alternative to QuEchERS-Based Extraction. J AOAC Int 2024; 107:649-662. Abstract
BACKGROUND Antibiotic residues in milk are a well-known hazard in the dairy food chain. Detection methods for these residues, such as nonspecific microbiological inhibitor tests or group-specific receptor tests, are relatively inexpensive, easy to use, and widely applied to ensure food safety. In contrast, specific detection by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)-although a critical, complimentary method to confirm the results of nonspecific testing-is relatively costly, time-consuming, and laborious. Furthermore, sample processing before LC-MS/MS analysis requires unique preparation procedures for different groups of antibiotic compounds. OBJECTIVE To simplify and speed up specific antibiotic residue detection, a low-cost, passive, and single-step method to fractionate analytes in raw milk was developed. METHODS Untreated raw milk was fractionated into its water and fat/protein phases using a Fractionation of Milk for Trace Analysis of Contaminants and Residues for Antibiotics (FraMiTrACR® AB) fractionation unit. The water fraction was then analyzed by LC-MS/MS. The analyte fractionation method was evaluated against a Quick Easy Cheap Effective Rugged and Safe (QuEChERS)-based method for sample preparation. RESULTS Our method allows qualitative and quantitative detection of substances from the penicillin, cephalosporin, macrolide, lincosamide, sulfonamide, tetracycline, and fluoroquinolone groups of antibiotics. Detection limits are below the legally prescribed maximum residue levels, allowing reliable, specific, and rapid validation of a positive result in nonspecific microbiological inhibitor tests. CONCLUSION Analyte fractionation by FraMiTrACR AB is a faster alternative to QuEChERS-based sample preparation for the detection of antibiotic substances in milk. HIGHLIGHT This method describes a low-cost, environmentally friendly, passive, and single-step milk analyte fractionation. As an alternative to QuEChERS-based preparation, this fractionation method simplifies and speeds up the process for specific antibiotic residue detection.

Abstract
Newly designed micro-solid phase extraction cartridges are now available, reflecting the increasing shift towards laboratory automation, especially in the clean-up step for the analysis of pesticide residues in food and feed. In the present study, the introduction of different sorbents on the newly designed PAL µSPE CTC cartridges was investigated for the removal of matrix interferents and the recovery of pesticides. Eight cartridges containing different sorbent combinations and different amounts were used including EMR-lipid (not activated), Z-sep, chitin, C18, PSA, and GCB. The evaluation of co-extractive removal for each cartridge showed that the optimal choice for removing fatty acids was the cartridges containing PSA and Z-sep as clean-up sorbents. However, the presence of C18 and EMR-lipid was still required for the removal of sterols and tocopherols. Two grams of sample, fish feed (FF) and rapeseed cake (RSC) were extracted using QuEChERS citrate buffer, followed by a freeze-out step. The recoveries and repeatability of QuEChERS using µ-SPE clean-up were evaluated for 216 pesticide residues (112 compounds analyzed by GC-MS/MS and 143 compounds by LC-MS/MS, from which 39 compounds were analyzed using both techniques). The best results, with recovery between 70 and 120% and RSD <20%, were achieved when FF samples were cleaned-up with 15 mg EMR-lipid and 20 mg MgSO4. This was achieved for 94% of GC-amenable compounds and 86% of LC-amenable compounds. In the case of RSC, the best results were seen when samples were cleaned-up with the cartridge containing only 20 mg Z-sep and 20 mg MgSO4. This was achieved for 88% of GC-amenable compounds and 90% of LC-amenable compounds. Although these cartridges yielded optimal results in terms of recovery, their use could require more instrument maintenance, especially for GC-MS/MS, due to the lower removal of co-extractives.

Abstract
Herein, an unprecedented cadmium-based metal-organic framework (JNU-106) fabricated by utilizing pyrazole-functionalized tetraphenylethylene ligands (Py-TPE) and rod-shaped secondary building units is reported, possessing a new (3,3,3,6,6,8)-connected topological network. Thanks to the ingeniously designed intramolecular charge transfer behavior, which originates from the congruent coplanarity between Py and TPE, JNU-106 exhibits intense green luminescence with a quantum yield increased by 1.5 times. The phenomenon of remarkable fluorescence quenching of JNU-106 reveals that it possesses extremely high anti-interference performance, superior sensitivity, and dedicated selectivity toward tetracycline antibiotics (TCAs) in aqueous solutions, which are comparable to those of the state-of-the-art porous sensing compounds. Taking the theoretical calculations and experimental results into account, the luminescence quenching is mainly attributed to the internal filtration effect and the static quenching effect. Considering the portable and rapid performance of JNU-106-based testing strips for sensing TCAs, the fabricated JNU-106 provides an alternative for ecological monitoring and environmental governance.

Abstract
In order to achieve the simultaneous extraction and detection of tetracycline (TC) in milk, the amino-functionalized Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (NH2-MIL-88B) was synthesized via a solvothermal method with Fe3+ and 2-aminoterephthalic acid (NH2-BDC) as precursor. Thanks to the unique structure of NH2-MIL-88B, it could be used to highly effective extract of TC in milk. More interestedly, the introduced -NH2 could react with -OH from TC by a hydrogen-bonding interaction to cause the electronic interactions that enhances the peroxidase-like activity of NH2-MIL-88B, which result in the enhancement of Fenton reaction by the transfer of the electron between TC and NH2-MIL-88B. Under the optimal testing conditions, the linear absorbance response is well correlated with the TC concentration range of 50-1000 nM, which can reach a low LOD of 46.75 nM. Besides, the sensor exhibits excellent selectivity to TC, and the proposed strategy can also be applied to milk with good recovery (83.33-107.00%). Finally, the NH2-MIL-88B and cellulose acetate (CA) are combined to form nanozyme hybrid membranes through the non-solvent induced phase separation method, which can be used to prepare point-of-care testing (POCT) for rapid and in-situ detection of TC.

Abstract
The current effort introduces a facile construction of peony-like CuO:Tb3+ nanostructure (P-L CuO:Tb3+ NS), whose characterization was determined via techniques of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. We investigated ofloxacin, pefloxacin and gatifloxacin oxidation electrochemically on P-L CuO:Tb3+ NS-modified glassy carbon electrode (P-L CuO:Tb3+ NS/GCE), the results of which revealed the irreversible oxidation of drugs through a two-electron oxidation process. An admirable resolution was found for this modified electrode between voltammetric peaks of ofloxacin, pefloxacin and gatifloxacin, suggesting its appropriateness for simultaneous detection of these drugs in pharmaceutical media. In addition, our nanostructure synergistically influenced the electro-catalytic oxidations of these three compounds. Differential pulse voltammetric measurements of ofloxacin, pefloxacin and gatifloxacin through our sensor showed a limit of detection of 1.9, 2.3 and 1.2 nM a as well as a linear dynamic range between 0.01 and 800.0 μM in phosphate buffered solution (0.1 M, pH = 6.0), respectively. Moreover, as-fabricated sensor could successfully co-detect these drugs in real serum and tablets specimens. In addition, since we use animal foods such as milk it is very important to detect their fluoroquinolone residues. For this purpose, the proposed sensor was tested to determine the residues of ofloxacin, pefloxacin and gatifloxacin in milk.

Abstract
Non-targeted analysis of chemical hazards in foods plays a crucial role in controlling food safety. However, because it brings forward high demand for sample pretreatment, materials suitable for the pretreatment of foods, especially animal foods, are rare. Herein, covalent organic frameworks (COF)-based monolithic materials were constructed by three successive steps: preparation of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sponge using sugar cube as a sacrificial template, loading of a heteroporous COF on PDMS sponge via ultrasonic or in-situ growth method, coating of the obtained PDMS@COF by polydopamine (PDA) network. As-prepared PDMS@COF@PDA sponges were demonstrated to work well in sample pretreatment of animal foods for non-targeted analysis of chemical hazards. After a simple vortex treatment for about 2 min, more than 98% triglycerides, the main interfering matrix components in animal foods, could be removed from lard and pork samples, accompanied by "full recovery" (recovery efficiencies: ≥63%) of 44 chemical hazards with different physicochemical properties. Besides providing promising sample pretreatment materials for non-targeted food safety analysis, this work also paves a feasible way to improve COF-based monolithic materials and thus promote their practical applications, because we found that the introduction of PDA network on COF-based monolithic material surface could play a role in "killing three birds with one stone": enhancing the stability of the materials by overcoming the detachment of COF during operations; controllably adjusting hydrophobic and hydrogen-bonding interactions on the material surface to promote the removal of triglycerides; weakening the hydrophobic and π-π interactions between COF and chemical hazards to increase the recoveries of chemical hazards.

Abstract
The need remains for veterinary multi-residue methods that reliably quantify and identify veterinary drugs in the various animal-based food matrices. Such a method should not only show good method performance parameters (e.g. recoveries of analytes) but must also be fast and cheap. The proposed method focused on the following points: acceptable analyte trueness (recovery) and precision for a large number (200) of diverse veterinary drugs in the relevant animal-based food matrices (egg, muscle, fatty fish, liver, kidney, and honey). The sample preparation method termed p-QuEChERS uses a salt mixture consisting of potassium phosphates to induce phase separation. The avoidance of conventional QuEChERS salts (e.g. magnesium sulphate) significantly improves recoveries of several critical analytes. Analyte recoveries were further improved by adding a centrifugation and a defatting step before initiating the salt-induced phase separation. This combined clean-up removes a large fraction of the potentially interfering matrix compounds. As a result, matrix effects in the electrospray interface were minimized. These factors were the basis for the obtained good validation data. Two types of high-resolution mass spectrometers coupled to liquid chromatography were compared for analysis. In comparison with conventional QuEChERS, the proposed p-QuEChERS concept improved the recovery of polar analytes such as penicillins, tetracyclines and quinolones. The simplicity of the procedure and the low consumable expenses make the method ideal for the routine control of veterinary drugs in all evaluated animal-based food matrices.

Abstract
Current screening capabilities for veterinary drugs (VDs) in foods are limited, requiring time-consuming and expensive trace-level analyses. For the first time, a high-throughput planar solid-phase extraction (HTpSPE) cleanup, controlled by UV/vis/FLD imaging, was developed for screening 81 VDs from 6 different groups (glucocorticoids, anthelmintics, antiparasitics, coccidiostats, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and antibiotics) in 4 different matrices (honey, pig muscle, cow milk, and chicken eggs). It consumed 13 times less solvent and was more eco-friendly and 5 times faster than routine methods. The VDs were automatically eluted using the autoTLC-LC-MS interface, separated online on a high-performance liquid chromatography column via a 10-min gradient, and detected by Orbitrap high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry. The screening method was validated according to the latest European Commission Implementing Regulation 2021/808. Most VDs except penicillins and cephalosporins were detected at the 5-μg/kg level in pig muscle, cow milk, and chicken eggs and 25-μg/kg level in honey.

Abstract
Although some ratiometric fluorescent sensors have been reported to detect tetracyclines, most of ratiometric fluorescent sensors were established based on europium ion with a narrow linear range. In this work, a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for tetracyclines detection was established based on the dual-emission lanthanum-doped carbon dots (La-CDs) as probes combining with the characteristic pH-response of tetracyclines. The fluorescence intensity of tetracyclines will be enhanced in high pH, and the emission peak of tetracyclines overlapped with the peak of probes. The superposition effect of tetracyclines and probes at 515 nm greatly improved the sensitivity of the ratiometric fluorescent sensor and widened the detection range, and linear ranges for oxytetracycline (OTC) and tetracycline (TC) were respectively 0.00-805.20 μM and 0.00-1039.50 μM. Moreover, the preparation procedure of the La-CDs was simple and time saving and the coupling agent was not required. A comparison of La-CDs with undoped carbon dots (un-CDs) showed that the optical performance and sensing performance of La-CDs were improved. In addition, a portable paper sensor with La-CDs as probes was preliminarily explored in this work, and the sensor has been applied to detect OTC and TC in pork and fish with satisfactory results.

Abstract
A multi-class and multi-residue/contaminant method for the determination of veterinary drug and pesticide residues and mycotoxins in bovine meat has been developed and validated. The veterinary drug residues/contaminants included antimicrobials, anabolic hormones, lactones, β-agonists, mycotoxins, and pesticides. Isotopic labeled internal standards were included to compensate residual matrix effects. The calibrators used in the method demonstrated linearity with the R2 > 0.98. The decision limit (CCα) values were in the range from 0.067 to 2103.84 μg/kg, while the range for detection capability (CCβ) was from 0.083 to 2482.13 μg/kg. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were in the range from 0.059 to 291.36 μg/kg, and 0.081 to 328.13 μg/kg, respectively. The recovery of analytes ranged from 61.28% to 116.20%. The intra-day coefficient of variation (CV) was from 0.97 to 25.93% and the inter-day CV was 2.30-34.04%. The method has been used for the determination of 49 residues/contaminants in bovine meat. Application of the method in routine analysis in bovine samples, revealed in limited samples the presences of enrofloxacin, oxytetracycline and sulfadiazine at the concentration of 35.22 µg/kg, 27.35 µg/kg, and 36.20 µg/kg, respectively.

Abstract
In recent years, a trend toward instrument miniaturization has led to the development of new and sophisticated analytical systems, such as nano-liquid chromatography (nano-LC), which has enabled improvements of sensitivity, as well as chromatographic resolution. The growing interest in nano-LC methodology has resulted in a variety of innovative and promising applications. In this article, we review the applications of nano-LC separation methods coupled with mass spectrometry in the analysis of food and environmental samples. An assessment of sample preparation methods and analytical performance are provided, along with comparison to other, more established analytical techniques. Three main groups of compounds that are crucial for food safety assessment are considered in this review: pharmaceuticals (including antibiotics), pesticides, and mycotoxins. Recent practical applications of the nano-LC method in the determination of these compounds are discussed. Furthermore, we also focus on methods for the determination of various environmental contaminants using nano-LC methods. Future perspectives for the development of nano-LC methods are discussed.

Abstract
The inefficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to remove contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) leads to their continuous release to the environment. Consequently, CECs are present at low concentrations in the treated wastewater (TWW), producing unpredicted and unwanted effects on living organisms as they are discharged into water receiving bodies. This work presents a fast and reliable method for the determination of CECs in TWW based on the innovative application of a QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe) method for water extraction and determination by sensitive liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole-linear ion trap tandem mass spectrometry (LC-QqLIT-MS/MS). The scope of the proposed QuEChERS-based method allows the monitoring of 107 CECs, including pharmaceuticals (58), antibiotics (16) and pesticides (33). The proposed method was successfully validated in urban TWW at two concentration levels (50 and 500 ng L-1) and it is a feasible alternative to conventional and time-consuming solid-phase extraction (SPE) methodologies. 89% of the CECs presented mean recovery values in the 70-120% range with relative standard deviations (RSDs) always < 20% (intra and inter-day precision), and limits of quantification (LOQs) in the range 5-500 ng L-1 (89% of the compounds showed a LOQ ≤ 50 ng L-1). The applicability of the method was demonstrated by the analysis of urban TWW samples (7 sampling events). In total, 35 CECs (23 pharmaceuticals, 2 antibiotics and 10 pesticides) were detected in the monitored samples with concentrations ranging from 5 to 677 ng L-1.

Abstract
A rapid, simple and generic analytical method has been developed for the analysis of veterinary drugs in pork by a quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (Q-TOF MS). This method allows for the simultaneous identification, screening and quantitation of 141 veterinary drug residues and metabolites from eighteen different classes. After extraction with acetonitrile/water and clean-up with C18 cartridges, the samples were analyzed by HPLC-Q-TOF MS. Validation of this method consisted of confirmation of identity, selectivity, linearity, limit of detection (LOD), lowest limit of quantification (LLOQ), matrix effect, recovery, precision and applicability of the method. Identification of the analytes was based on accurate mass measurements. The characteristic fragments were obtained by collisional experiments for a more reliable identification. The procedure was then applied to real pork samples. Sulfamethazine was detected in one sample and its metabolites were successfully found in one single run. This approach proved to be satisfactory for routine analysis.

Abstract
This study was performed to optimize the analytical method for multi-residues of 60 compounds in flatfish samples. Three sample preparation methods were tested to identify the optimal recovery conditions for target analytes. As a result, 10 mL of water/acetonitrile (1:4, v/v) was used to extract analytes from fish samples. For purification, C18 and 10 mL of acetonitrile saturated hexane were used to treat the samples. After evaporation and reconstitution, the fish samples were analyzed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The proposed method was validated according to the CODEX guidelines (CAC/GL-71). Our results showed the recoveries of 73.2%-115% and coefficients of variation of 1.6%-22.1%. The limit of quantification was 0.0005-0.005 mg/kg in the fishery products. In analysis of real samples, no samples exceeded the limit of quantification. This analytical method can be used for multi-residue screening and confirmation of the residues of veterinary drugs in fishery products.

Abstract
Tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) are a kind of commonly used antibiotics for treating infections, however, the overuse of TCs has adversely affected human health and the ecosystem. Thus, detection of TCs in water is important but challenging. In this work, a luminescent lanthanide metal-organic framework (LnMOF) sensor (1) for immediate detection of oxytetracycline (OTC) and tetracycline (TC) is developed. The sensor has high acid-base and water stability. Investigation reveals that among the 27 species of antibiotics, anions and cations under investigation, 1 shows highly selective sensing towards OTC and TC, and the detection is not disturbed by the presence of other species. The limit of detection (LOD) for OTC and TC are ultra-sensitive value of 1.95 and 2.77 nM, respectively. Investigation reveals the sensing mechanism is due to the inner filter effect. Further studies reveal that the sensor can be used in real sample monitoring. More importantly, test strips based on 1 are manufactured. They are an easy-to-use, low-cost, highly selective and sensitive sensing device for detecting OTC and TC. The sensing can be distinguished immediately and easily by the naked eyes, making it an excellent candidate to monitor OTC and TC in real use.

Abstract
A rapid, simple, and generic analytical method that could simultaneously determine 291 undesirable low molecular weight chemical contaminants from different drug families in protein powder, such as veterinary drugs and pesticides, etc, had been developed. This method comprised the extraction with acetonitrile-dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), clean-up through dispersive solid phase extraction (D-SPE) and low temperature filtration, and analysis by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry at multiple-reaction monitoring mode. Acetonitrile-DMSO was more generic than acetonitrile or methanol for the extraction of large-scale organic chemical contaminants with different polarities in protein powder. Most interferences in the extract were eliminated by the combination of D-SPE and low temperature filtration, which simultaneously provided satisfactory recoveries of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic analytes. In particular, besides the purification function, the sorbent of D-SPE also played an important role in grinding samples to improve extraction efficiency during homogenization. This streamlined approach allowed the processes of extraction and the main purification were carried out in one-step, and dramatically reduced sample preparation turnaround times and solvent consumption. For quantification, matrix-fortified calibration curves showed competent linearity for most of the target compounds with linear regression coefficients (r) higher than 0.9900, except for two analytes. The limits of quantification ranged from 0.1 μg/kg to 50 μg/kg, which was usually sufficient to verify the compliance of products with legal tolerances. The average recoveries for spiked protein powder ranged from 65.6% to 142.2% with associated RSD values between 0.5% and 28.5%. For over 90% of the analytes, the recoveries were between 70% and 120% with RSD values in the range of 1%-15%. Applying this method in routine monitoring programs would drastically reduce both effort and time.

Abstract
A multiclass method has been developed to screen and confirm a wide range of anti-microbial residues in muscle and milk, and validated using liquid-chromatography coupled to (low-resolution, LR) tandem mass spectrometry (LC-QqQ). Over sixty antibiotics, belonging to ten distinct families, were included in the method scope. The development process was rapidly concluded as a result of two previously implemented methods. This consisted of identical sample treatments, followed by liquid chromatography, and coupled with high-resolution (HR) mass spectrometry (LC-Q-Orbitrap). The validation study was performed in the range between 10-1500 μg·kg-1 for muscles and 2-333 μg·kg-1 for milk. The main performance characteristics were estimated and, then, compared to those previously obtained with HR technique. The validity of the method transfer was ascertained also through inter-laboratory studies.

Memon N, Qureshi T, Bhanger MI, Malik MI. Recent Trends in Fast Liquid Chromatography for Pharmaceutical Analysis. CURR ANAL CHEM 2019. [DOI: 10.2174/1573411014666180912125155] [Citation(s) in RCA: 8] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.6] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/22/2022]
Abstract
Background:
Liquid chromatography is the workhorse of analytical laboratories of pharmaceutical
companies for analysis of bulk drug materials, intermediates, drug products, impurities and
degradation products. This efficient technique is impeded by its long and tedious analysis procedures.
Continuous efforts of scientists to reduce the analysis time resulted in the development of three different
approaches namely, HTLC, chromatography using monolithic columns and UHPLC.
Methods:
Modern column technology and advances in chromatographic stationary phase including
silica-based monolithic columns and reduction in particle and column size (UHPLC) have not only
revolutionized the separation power of chromatographic analysis but also have remarkably reduced the
analysis time. Automated ultra high-performance chromatographic systems equipped with state-ofthe-
art software and detection systems have now spawned a new field of analysis, termed as Fast Liquid
Chromatography (FLC). The chromatographic approaches that can be included in FLC are hightemperature
liquid chromatography, chromatography using monolithic column, and ultrahigh performance
liquid chromatography.
Results:
This review summarizes the progress of FLC in pharmaceutical analysis during the period
from year 2008 to 2017 focusing on detecting pharmaceutical drugs in various matrices, characterizing
active compounds of natural products, and drug metabolites. High temperature, change in the mobile
phase, use of monolithic columns, new non-porous, semi-porous and fully porous reduced particle size
of/less than 3μm packed columns technology with high-pressure pumps have been extensively studied
and successively applied to real samples. These factors revolutionized the fast high-performance separations.
Conclusion:
Taking into account the recent development in fast liquid chromatography approaches,
future trends can be clearly predicated. UHPLC must be the most popular approach followed by the
use of monolithic columns. Use of high temperatures during analysis is not a feasible approach especially
for pharmaceutical analysis due to thermosensitive nature of analytes.

Abstract
Before being administered as medicinal products, Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) must be processed and decocted for human consumption. While the presence of pesticide residues in CHMs is a major concern, pesticide dissipation behavior during CHM processing has rarely been reported. In this study, the dissipation of three pesticide residues in the CHM Paeoniae Radix Alba (PRA) was investigated during each step of industrial processing. The boiling process was found to significantly reduce pesticide residues (61–89%), and the peeling process also contributed to pesticide degradation (29–68%). The high temperature (60 °C) during the drying process led to further pesticide degradation. The processing factors of all three pesticides after each processing step were less than one, and the processing factors for the overall process were lower than 0.027, indicating that industrial processing clearly reduced the amount of pesticide residues (97.3–99.4%). The findings provide guidance for the safe use of fungicides in CHMs and can help establish maximum residue limits for PRA to reduce human exposure to pesticides.

Abstract
Antibiotics are one of the emerging contaminants in water, which have a great impact on ecosystems and human health. It has been challenging to simultaneously realize low-cost, rapid, highly sensitive and selective detection of antibiotics with conventional methods. Here, we report luminescent chemosensors for detecting antibiotics in water, based on metal-organic framework (MOF), i.e., zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), loaded with rhodamine B (RhB) and fluorescein disodium salt (FSS) dyes. Compared with ZIF-8, the fluorescence signals of RhB@ZIF-8 and FSS@ZIF-8 were significantly improved and presented ultrahigh sensitivity to nitrofurans (NFAs) and tetracyclines (TCs) with fluorescence quenching and fluorescence enhancement in water, respectively. The unique structures and properties of RhB@ZIF-8 and FSS@ZIF-8 lead to outstanding sensitivities in antibiotic detection. For instance, the RhB@ZIF-8 sensor shows the lower limit of detection (LOD) of 0.26 μM to nitrofurantoin (NFT), 0.47 μM to nitrofurazone (NFZ), 0.11 μM to tetracycline (TC), and 0.14 μM to oxytetracycline (OTC); while the FSS@ZIF-8 sensor shows the LOD of 0.31 μM to NFT, 0.35 μM to NFZ, 0.17 μM to TC, and 0.16 μM to OTC. In addition, NFT and TC were also successfully detected by FSS@ZIF-8 in water from real water environment. The results indicate that dye@MOF-based luminescent composites are favorable for antibiotic detection, presenting great potentials in water quality monitoring.

Abstract
A fast and sensitive multi-residue and multiclass screening method for the simultaneous determination of 44 antimicrobials in salmon muscle, using ultra- high-performance liquid chromatography/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-TOF/MS), was develop and validated. Two different procedures for the extraction step were tested, and an extraction with acetonitrile, ethylenediaminetetra acetic acid (EDTA) and n-hexane proved to be the best alternative. The method was validated, in accordance with Decision 2002/657/EC, using a qualitative approach at the CCβ level. The detection of the analytes was accomplished by retention time and accurate mass, whose maximum error should not exceed 5 ppm. All the compounds were successfully detected and identified at concentration levels corresponding to ½ maximum residue limit (MRL). The screening method was applied to 39 store bought samples of farmed salmon purchased in Portugal, originating from Norway and Denmark, and no antibiotic residues were detected.

Abstract
A highly sensitive, selective and precise HPTLC method coupled with fluorescence detection was developed and validated for the determination of α-aminocephalosporin antibiotics; namely cefalexin, cefadroxil and cefradine in their standard solutions. The applicability of the developed methodology was demonstrated via analysis of cefalexin in goat milk samples. Full optimization of the fluorescence derivatization reaction was carried out with regard to the standard solutions of the studied compounds or after extraction of milk samples. The separation of the studied compounds was performed on HPTLC precoated silica gel plates 60 F254 using acetonitrile: water in a ratio 85:15 (v/v) as a mobile phase. The retention behavior of the formed derivatives was discussed in detail. It was found that hydrophilic interaction mode is the main interaction mechanism governing the retention of the formed derivatives. In addition, an experimental design approach was conducted for optimization of the chromatographic conditions. Modified QuEChERS was applied as an efficient extraction technique of cefalexin from both spiked and real goat milk samples. Optimization of QuEChERS extraction technique to achieve the highest extraction recovery was performed and the results indicate that this method provides a good extraction recovery (83-116%) for cefalexin from goat milk samples. Limit of detection (LOD) of the developed method was found to be 0.023, 0.005, and 0.023 ng band-1 for cefalexin, cefadroxil and cefradine, respectively in their standard solutions and 0.165 ng band-1 for cefalexin in goat milk samples. According to the achieved LOD values, the method sensitivity was quasi-equivalent to other methods based on expensive techniques such as HPLC-UV and HPLC-MS and it is sufficient to determine cefalexin below its MRL in milk samples. Moreover, the method was successfully applied to a pharmacokinetic study of cefalexin in goat milk after single intramuscular injection of 10 mg of cefalexin kg-1 per body weight.
